Revenge of the Lawn, The Abortion, So the Wind Won't Blow It All Away, by Richard Brautigan

Three unforgettable Brautigan masterpieces reissued in a one-volume omnibus edition.

REVENGE OF THE LAWN: Originally published in 1971, these bizarre flashes of insight and humor cover everything from "A High Building in Singapore" to the "Perfect California Day." This is Brautigan's only collection of stories and includes "The Lost Chapters of TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA."

THE ABORTION: AN HISTORICAL ROMANCE 1966: A public library in California where none of the books have ever been published is full of romantic possibilities. But when the librarian and his girlfriend must travel to Tijuana, they have a series of strange encounters in Brautigan's 1971 novel.

SO THE WIND WON'T BLOW IT ALL AWAY: It is 1979, and a man is recalling the events of his twelfth summer, when he bought bullets for his gun instead of a hamburger. Written just before his death, and published in 1982, this novel foreshadowed Brautigan's suicide.

Brautigan's the best, but this is not his best
By J. Bosiljevac
I discovered Brautigan recently and have been reading everything I can get my hands on of his. There's three collections of three books. The one with TROUT FISHING IN AMERICA and IN WATERMELON SUGAR is the best one to get if you're only going to get one. But this one is good as well.

REVENGE OF THE LAWN, a collection of short stories, has some great two- and three-pagers that display typical Brautigan wit, humor, and insight. Some, as with any collection, are better than others.

THE ABORTION is one of Brautigan's better plots. And I say this because his style and sense of humor is pretty consistent through all of his work, and you either love it or hate it. If you hate it, you won't like any of his stuff. If you like it, then you'll probably like this one. It seems more original than some of his genre parody stories like THE HAWKLINE MONSTER and DREAMING OF BABYLON. It also seems like it may be a little autobiographical, so the emotion in it feels more real.

SO THE WIND WON'T BLOW IT ALL AWAY eerily forshadows Brautigan's suicide. It speaks to the youth in all of us and carries a great sense of nostalgia. Taken in context with his life and its end shortly after writing this book, it feels like a depressed man looking back at the golden years with complete fondness.

Overall, I'd say this is the second best of the Brautigan collections available.

Paddington Treasury (Paddington Bear), by Michael Bond

This treasury marks Paddington's 40th year in America, with a comprehensive collection of Sir Michael Bond's beloved stories. Peggy Fortnum's line drawings have been watercolored by her step-granddaughter Caroline Nuttall-Smith, who was not yet born when the books were first published. Since the Browns first discovered him at London's Paddington Station wearing a tag that read "Please look after this bear," Paddington's popularity has grown and his books have sold 25 million copies worldwide in 22 languages. The enduring appeal of this small bear from Darkest Peru ensures that he will be discovered by generations to come. Those well versed in Paddington's antics know that he does tend to make ordinary occasions more exciting. While readers of all ages may laugh as he bumbles from one near disaster to another, it is always a relief to find a happy ending.

This is NOT a comprehensive collection of the Paddington stories!
By AMS
The publisher's description and reviews neglect to mention that all of the stories in this collection have been abridged. The only reason I didn't give this book fewer stars is because I like the watercolored illustrations (which goes to show that not all changes are bad), and because Paddington is still enjoyable reading, even when edited down. I just wish they had published a color edition of the INTACT stories, or at the very least they should have made it clear upfront that entire chapters have been omitted.

treasury of Paddington Bear
By Edie Reader
While all the Paddington stories are wonderful, an anthology of this size is too large for little ones to cuddle up with. Not enough pictures for little listeners. Single volumes would be a better bet.

Truly a treasure
By Tara M.
I read some of Paddington Bear in my 4th grade reading group in school, and was recently reminded of the book when The Gap sent me an email, introducing a PB inspired line for kids. I immediately went to amazon and searched for this collection. The price can vary greatly, as it doesn't seem there is a recent version of this entire collection. So I bought this on amazon from a private seller, 2nd hand, and I'm very pleased with it. The dust jacket was slightly wrinkled, but I don't care about that at all (and often take dust jackets off books for my 1 and 4 year old anyway). I'm reading this with my 4-year-old son and it's a great book for him. He doesn't like "scary" books or books with "bad guys" or too much stress or conflict, so this fits the bill. When he was 3, we read all the Pooh books, and they were great for him too. This is a sort of natural progression from Pooh. It may not be perfect for every small child, as there aren't a lot of pictures (and you often have 2 pages in a row, open book, with no pictures, and the pages are large and filled with text, so you can be reading for several minutes while the child has no picture to look at). It also uses adult vocabulary (but Pooh pretty much did, as well), but it's a great way to explain various words and increase a child's vocabulary, as well (and teach about other countries, like Peru and England, and the geography of the two--we've looked at a globe several times to talk about Paddington's route from Peru to England in the boat, and to learn why it was hotter in Peru, by seeing how close it is to the equator vs. England). So while it may be over my son's head sometimes, it's a good learning tool at those times too. It's a really fun book to read with a child, and I am very pleased to have found it.

The Murrow Boys: Pioneers on the Front Lines of Broadcast Journalism, by Lynne Olson, Stanley W. Cloud

Publishers Weekly described The Murrow Boys as "a lively, colloquial history of broadcast journalism that is so exciting one's impulse is to read it in a single sitting." It tells the swashbuckling tale of Edward R. Murrow and his legendary band of CBS radio journalists - Charles Collingwood, Howard K. Smith, William Shirer, Eric Sevareid, and others - as they "paint pictures in the air" from the World War II front. Brimming with personalities and anecdotal detail, it also serves up a sharp-eyed account of where the craft went wrong after the war, when vanity and commercialism increasingly intruded."This is history at its best," said Ted Anthony of AP News.

From Publishers Weekly
In 1937, Edward R. Murrow (1908-1965) was dispatched to Europe by CBS Radio as its European representative. Although the job consisted of finding entertainment for the radio, world events would soon intervene. With Hitler beginning his rampage, Murrow fought isolationism at home and provincialism at CBS to form a legendary group of electronic journalists. William L. Shirer became Berlin correspondent, and Murrow, holding down London himself, hired the vain, insecure Eric Sevareid for Paris. Streetwise New Yorker Larry LeSueur, covered Dunkirk. There were also Charles Collingwood, Murrow's "Bonnie Prince Charlie," who loved the good life; Winston Burdett, onetime Communist later turned stool pigeon for a red-hunting Senate committee; and Howard K. Smith, Southern gentleman and Rhodes Scholar, who would take "the last train from Berlin" when the U.S. entered the war. With the end of the war, we see "the boys" as they evolve in a changing America, resisting television (they all, at first, hated it); McCarthyism (Sevareid, Murrow and, especially, Collingwood would be fearless); hubris (Shirer became so arrogant he was fired); and the CBS corporate structure (William S. Paley, corporate shark, would always win). Cloud, a former Washington bureau chief for Time, and his wife, Olson, former White House correspondent for the Baltimore Sun, have written a lively, colloquial history of broadcast journalism that is so exciting one's impulse is to read it in a single sitting.

From Library Journal
At first blush, this book by a husband-and-wife team of journalists may seem an oft-told tale, a further deifying of CBS News' Edward R. Murrow (already deified in numerous autobiographies by the "boys"). But it is much, much more than that; it is a thorough and scholarly documentation of radio reportage during World War II by the likes of Murrow, William Shirer, Eric Sevareid, Charles Collingwood, Howard K. Smith, Hugh Downs, et al., which created a whole new journalistic industry. The Murrow Boys is written with page-turning verve; the largely egocentric, hard-drinking cast is presented in detail with all warts exposed. But the story is also a sad one, revealing the breakup of a fine network news operation by executives focused on the bottom line and, in more recent years, by the advent of local television newsrooms peopled with cookie-cutter personnel selected for good looks and ethnic balance and without regard for journalistic experience. This book gives one pause about the quality of the news we get on TV. Highly recommended for all libraries.?Chet Hagan, Berks Cty. P.L. System, Pa.

From Kirkus Reviews
An absorbing, frequently poignant narrative about the heroes of CBS radio news, the men and women who set the standards for broadcast journalism during WW II, and about what happened to the heroes, and the standards, in the years that followed. Although there were great journalists in WW II besides those surrounding Edward R. Murrow, those who were hired and nurtured by Murrow to broadcast the war for CBS radio--Eric Sevareid, Larry LeSueur, William L. Shirer, Charles Collingwood, and Howard K. Smith, among others--have always shared a special mystique. As the husband-and-wife team of Cloud (former Washington bureau chief for Time) and Olson (former Moscow correspondent for Associated Press) explain, radio news was still in its infancy, and Murrow's live war coverage was the first time the medium's dramatic potential was realized. The authors show that these new radio journalists played an important role in shaping American public opinion about the war: Despite the emphasis by CBS bureaucrats on ``objectivity,'' the Murrow group engaged in more than a simple presentation of facts, ranging from the overt editorializing of Sevareid's eloquent broadcasts from London during the blitz to Shirer's masterful use of irony and insinuation from Berlin. They had to contend constantly with attempts at censorship. Despite their travails, the Murrow Boys enjoyed commercial success: Some wrote well-received books (Shirer's Berlin Diary, Smith's Last Train From Berlin), and some became celebrities in their own right, a portent of the media stars of later years. This success, and the journalists' identification with corporate interests, though, were to have a corrosive effect, as the authors demonstrate: Decades after the war, the traditions of Murrow had faded, replaced by sensationalist and commercialized journalism that lacked either the drama or the intellectual content of CBS radio's brilliant wartime coverage. A nicely told look back at what was, and a glimpse of what might have been, in the field of broadcast journalism. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

How radio and TV news got started.
By A Customer
Great book for news junkies, World War II buffs, and anyone who has ever gotten shafted on the job! The authors showed how these men made CBS the Tiffany network, and how it discarded every single one of them, including the great Ed Murrow. An insightful look at network news, and why there's not much depth to it. Interesting to see what went on "behind the scenes" with some of the most famous (and not familar) names in broadcast journalism. Not a boring chapter in the book!

Excellent history and character study
By A Customer
The names Murrow, Sevareid, Collingwood, and Shirer have created standards that have been forgotten. Thought has been replaced by good looks. Read this book to see how CBS News became a news operation of mythic proportion with brilliant, yet terribly troubled men creating such high standards that have become forgotten. (You'll see no one on your local five pm television news here.) For these men, the importance was in writing, not pictures. You'll also see how these legendary men were racked with insecurities and self-torture. It's also uncanny in terms of how each had a rise and fall at CBS. Sadly, it's all true. The authors didn't need to resort to poetic license. (Read other accounts of these figures and you'll learn that.) When you're done with this book, you'll wish Howard K. Smith or Robert Trout were still on television today. You'll wish that instead of having happy talk on the news, you had thoughful, intelligent people who respected their audience doing reports that provoked the viewer's intellect and not pander to him. Read how Howard K. Smith was fired from CBS, what prompted it way back then, and realize the standards have been steadily declining since then on all networks. It's an enjoyable, easy-to-read book that describes the creation and erosion of impeccable standards.

Well-Done and Revealing
By K.A.Goldberg
This look at the "Boys" who covered World War II for CBS radio is quite moving. I liked reading of Ed Murrow's battles with the CBS brass, and the portraits of William L. Shirer, Eric Sevareid, Larry LeSueur, Myra Breckenridge (the Murrow "Girl"), Charles Collingwood, etc. How odd that such talented journalists were often wracked by jealousy and self-doubt. How predictable that CBS eventually dumped most of the Boys - along with their high standards - after the advent of television. By forsaking such talent, CBS helped usher in the image-conscious, bleeds-it-leads mediocrity of today's news. Fortunately, Howard K. Smith, Shirer, Sevareid and several others left a rich legacy in books and memoirs, and at this writing one can still hear Richard C. Hottelet report for National Public Radio (NPR). This book should be required reading for all journalists and corporate news executives.

THE DISQUIETING TRUTH
By RR
I would like to see several of the previous reviewers address the following:

-- In 1969, a Col. MacArthur testified to Congress, requesting $10 million for the Pentagon to develop, WITHIN 10 YEARS, synthetic viruses that would be "refractory" (i.e., resistant) to the human immunological system. Congress granted the monies. Much of the resulting work was carried out at Fort Dietrich, Maryland, the Army's main bio-warfare laboratory.

-- Within several years virologists began describing in the medical journals their experiments with new laboratory developed viruses being tested on cattle, who began to exhibit the symptoms of a "slow, wasting disease."

-- Later, some of these same gov't. researchers proposed, since human experimentation was "considered unethical," introducing these new

viruses covertly by combining them with other experimental drugs for human testing.

-- Next, the WHO conducted the largest innoculation campaign in history in Africa -- which now has the highest incidence of HIV in the world.

-- Then, the NIH conducted the voluntary innoculation campaigns for Hepatitus among the gay communities in New York and San Francisco.

-- Within a year, circa 1979-1980, the first cases of the strange new cancer-like disease started to appear almost simultaneously in the gay communities in those two areas (such simultaneous geographic diversity for the start of a new disease is impossible in nature).

--Then, in the early 1980's, when independent researchers saw the annual gov't. published percentage of population/infection ratio rising dramatically each year in these two test groups (with a trend line that appeared to be heading toward 100%) and started questioning this, the gov't. STOPPED PUBLISHING THE DATA.

--And, to put this in its proper political context, it was the same time frame as the Right and the Religious Right were coming into national political power with the election of 1980, and their overwhelming hatred of gays and the new sexual freedom that had developed in the 1960's and 1970's.

Read this and the author's previous book, "Aids and the Doctors of Death" along with David Horowitz's books; there is a great deal more chilling evidence to show how the new bio-technology has enabled the far right to pursue their fascistic ends much more secretly and efficiently than their German Nazi counterparts.

THE WORLD AS I FOUND IT centers around Ludwig Wittgenstein, one of the most powerfully magnetic philosophers of our time--brilliant, tortured, mercurial, forging his own solitary path while leaving a permanent mark on all around him.

From Publishers Weekly
Said PW of this first novel about the Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein: "The enigmatic Wittgenstein could imagine the unimaginable, but never would he have imagined it possible that he would one day appear as the protagonist of a noveland a delightful one, at that."
Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
"This," asserts the author, "is fiction." Though a detailed narrative of the life and times of eminent 20th-century philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, "it is not history, philosophy, or biography." Duffy's first novel is not for the reader looking to understand contemporary philosophy; indeed, philosophers may object to its use as a gloss on a young man's private anguish. And some readers may wonder whether the many characters borrowed from real life are being fairly represented. But readers who like a broad canvas will find this work appealing, moving as it does from uppercrust Vienna to pre-war Cambridge to the battlefields of World War I and World War II. Alas, there is some infelicitous phrasing here, and the discussions of what's doing in philosophy can read like an encyclopedia. But in scope and ambition this work is finally compelling. "It is hard to know which is more outsized -- the talent of Bruce Duffy or his nerve. Duffy is a superb writer." (The Los Angeles Times)

"Duffy has sustained a miracle. A rich, eloquent, poised masterwork that succeeds beyond one's most generous expectations." (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

forging flesh and blood out of the artifacts of history
By Ben Gilworth
I certainly wasn't hampered in my enjoyment of this book by a lack of familiarity with (or, until now, interest in) twentieth-century philosophy. "The World as I Found It" taught me what makes a great fictional characters: such compassion and detail that I feel I know them as I know myself. Duffy's Wittgenstein, Russell, and Moore are forged from such different materials and live such different lives. But their struggles and motivations are painted in such rich detail that I intimately recognized the humanity in each of them. Great writing.

A fine novel about Russell, Wittgenstein and Moore
By Ralph Blumenau
This is a novel about the three famous Cambridge philosophers: Bertrand Russell, Ludwig Wittgenstein and G.E.Moore. Duffy states firmly in his Preface that his "is a work of fiction: it is not history, philosophy or biography, though it may seem at times to trespass on those domains." He admits that he has taken some liberties with dates, and even that he has given Wittgenstein two sisters rather than three. On the other hand, one does recognize actual quotations from letters, as well as incidents which certainly did happen. When an author describes what type of book he is writing, it is not for a reviewer to say that he should have written a different type of book; but I must say that, whilst I do not regret that he has invented dialogue and thought processes, I found the mixture of distorted and actual facts a little unsettling, and, I venture to say, artistically unnecessary.

But the book is very well written and immensely enjoyable. The title comes from a sentence in Wittgenstein's Tractatus and Wittgenstein is the central character of the book, but Bertrand Russell and G.E.Moore figure in it as characters of almost equal weight with Wittgenstein's, andwe have a vivid and well researched picture of the personalities and incidents in their lives. The backgrounds against which they lived are beautifully described: the Vienna into which Wittgenstein was born; the oppressive atmosphere in the home of his immensely wealthy father; the horrific battlefields in Poland where Wittgenstein distinguished himself during the First World War; the coarse villagers whose children Wittgenstein taught in Austria; the spartan Norwegian settings; and then the introverted Cambridge of the Apostles. We are invited to Garsington and enter into the relationship between Bertrand Russell and Lady Ottoline Morrell. There is an excellent description of the atmosphere of the school at Beacon Hill in Sussex where Russell's lofty educational theories rub shoulders with his seedy sexual antics. One of the special delights of Duffy's book is how he brings alive the less well known third member of the trio, G.E.Moore - described as a mild, ungainly man who had little confidence in himself until he was, as it were, Surprised by Joy when he sank into the placid bliss of a happy marriage.

According to Duffy, Wittgenstein, too, was in the end Surprised by Joy. Duffy is exceptionally good on death scenes - not morbid or mawkish, but with the sense that a death is a moment of truth and tells us a good deal about the life that preceded it. Wittgenstein met his death of cancer with the honesty that he had always practised, and there were no regrets for his tormented past. This is how Duffy's novel ends:

"Just before he died, Wittgenstein said to Mrs Bevens, Tell everyone that I have had a wonderful life. Of course, it wasn't like him to exaggerate, and his friends found it troubling that he would say this. To them, Wittgenstein's life seemed many things, but not wonderful, and in the end they did not know if he had merely been trying to put them at ease or if in fact he had found his troubled life wonderful. But this, in any case, is what he said."

A miraculous book
By peripatetic reader
This rich, comic, poignant portrait of three of the most influential philosophers of the 20th century will, if nothing else, make you understand the spell cast by Ludwig Wittgenstein on so many people during his lifetime and after. Though the second half of the book is not quite as compelling and revelatory as the first (it could have done with some tightening), it is still better than 90% of the novels out there.

Every time I reread it, I am struck anew by just how remarkable it is that a Christian American heterosexual should have entered so completely and sympathetically into the mind of the tormented, homosexual Viennese madman-saint who was Wittgenstein. That is, of course, what novelists are supposed to do but so rarely manage. Bravo.
