PreSchool-Grade 3-Grumps is a gray and scraggly but well-loved circus dog. He moves slowly, if at all. The children roar with laughter when, instead of jumping through the flaming hoop, the old pooch just yawns, closes his eyes, and lies down until the clowns roll him offstage in a wagon. Then a new pup, Sparks, arrives and dazzles the audience with his tricks. Not to worry though-the aging canine proves he can still steal the show one last time. The combination of Clements's impeccable storyteller pacing and Truesdell's creative and whimsical cartoons create a reading and visual experience second only to actually being at the circus. The illustrator uses a mixture of watercolors with pen and ink to bring the action to life in vibrant colors. The use of muted tones for the animated and gleeful children surrounding the center ring helps to create a realistic mood for this funny and warm story about extended family life behind the scenes of the Big Top. For librarians looking for a great circus book or an example of the importance of a loving family-this is it. Children are sure to demand a repeat performance.

An Instant Family Classic

My four year old daughter and I both love this book. The illustrations are colorful, funny and genuine. The book's theme that everyone deserves to belong, be loved, and be recognized for their accomplishments is very timely teaching for my preschooler. This is one I'll keep to read with my grandchildren!

Sweet, funny & great lesson on persistence

I found this book here on Amazon, when searching for books by the illustrator, Sue Truesdell. We were introduced to her talents with the wonderful "Donna O'Neeshuck was Chased by Some Cows", a favorite of my son's. The story of "Circus Family Dog" is sweet, and fun to read aloud. The illustrator has that marvelous ability to capture the subtleties of feelings of the characters, and some of the expressions on the face of Grumps, the circus dog's face, are just hilarious. The tale touches on the value of persistence, but also on loyalty to one's family. It is irresistable and sweet. Get it!

Such a cute book

My Father-in-law's "Grandpa name" is "Grumps" just like in the book. It was very cute and perfect for our family. They story was cute as well as the pictures. Great book!
