Great essay book for non-native speaker
By Atheel M. Jasim
It was a great book that you should start first ...
If you should start from scratches this is the right book for you ...

Other books about essays are good too but it does not start from zero they are more advanced OR for native-English speaker.

I liked the book and plan to complete it prior to other books

Goodluck

This book is more like a workbook. It is a good help for the one who doesn't have a clue on how to write an essay :) the only thing is that if you are studying by yourself, who is going to grade you, or correct you?

El Nino: Stormy Weather for People and Wildlife, by Caroline Arnold

When the weather becomes extreme or even unseasonal, "El Nino" is usually the phrase we hear. Every three to seven years, El Nino disrupts weather all over the globe, second only to the change of seasons in its influence on the climate. But what is El Nino? El Nino is the name given to the unusual increase in ocean temperatures along the Peruvian and the Ecuadorian coasts that is part of a larger pattern of changes in wind and weather throughout the world. With El Nino come violent storms and upsets in global food chain that dramatically affect both humans and wildlife. Effects can be as gentle as a mild winter in northeastern United States or as violent as drought in Southeast Asia, brutal storms in South America, and wildfires in Australia. With the help of carefully selected photographs and clarifying charts and maps, Caroline Arnold makes clear how this remarkable weather pattern forms, how scientists track it, what its effects are, and why following its path is of such importance.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-9-The phenomenon known as El Ni?o (and its cooler sibling, La Ni?a) have apparently been upsetting the meteorological applecart on a relatively regular basis for many centuries, but it is only recently, with the use of modern technologies, that scientists have correlated these oceanic effects with disconcertingly dramatic weather on a global scale as well. Arnold has drawn on this body of scientific knowledge to present a picture of the atmospheric and ecological import of such shifts in oceanic temperatures. Her readable, informative text describes the physical symptoms of El Ni?o and La Ni?a and their widespread effects, ranging from a quiet hurricane season in Florida to severe drought in the rainforests of Indonesia, and what this means both to animal/plant habitats and human economies. Full-color photos, a computer-image series, diagrams, and Internet sources bolster the narrative. (Unfortunately, the text is sometimes printed across page-size photos, making deciphering difficult.) While the latest, very powerful El Ni?o has made headlines for over a year, this is seemingly the first book for young people in this important area of study. And though La Ni?a now seems to be in the ascendancy, El Ni?o will return-as will demand for information on the topic.

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-8. Science teachers and students will appreciate this very readable introduction to the El Nino current. In just 48 pages, Arnold explains the complex relationship between the warming of the Pacific current and global weather patterns, describes the effects of the most recent El Nino and notable ones of the past, and discusses the tracking and forecasting of the phenomenon and the importance of scientists' predictions. Difficult concepts and terms are defined in the text and, again, in a glossary, and attractive, full-color photographs and diagrams clearly show El Nino's disruptive effects. A brief listing of suggested resources, including periodical articles, children's books, and the Internet address of the Tropical Ocean Global Atmosphere (TOGA) program, where up-to-date information can be obtained, is appended. All well that ends well........ Thats the experience I had and in the end I'm happy to use the service of Amazon. I ordered this book 'El Nino' long back in December, it was scheduled to reach me in the following month by end of january but somehow it didn't reach at all. I wrote back to Amazon and they took the action instantaneously, they re-ordered my book, re-shipped and upgraded the shipping/postal option. Actually for the second time I didn't have to pay at all. And in the end the book finally reached me and in good condition........ so im happy with the product and Amazon service. Though I have to pay 0.33 USD to the post-man but it didn't hurt at all......... haahahaahahaa

Stormy Weather
By James T. Morgan
Caroline Arnold does it again with her book El Nino: Stormy Weather for People and Wildlife. Arnold incorporates images, created by satellites, to show the cause and effect of El Nino. After discussing the weather phenomenon itself, she then surveys the effect it has on wildlife and the connection it has to diseases, past and future. A great book for all ages.

From Booklist
This new edition of The Concise Columbia Encyclopedia has 2,000 more entries than the second, published in 1989 [RBB Ja 1 90]. But it is not just updated relative to that edition but also to the fifth edition of The Columbia Encyclopedia [RBB S 15 93]. The Concise Columbia has never been just a spin-off of The Columbia Encyclopedia; it has always had some unique material. The editors of this new edition have taken advantage of the extra year since the publication of the parent work to update articles and to add some new topics. Editor Lagass{‚}e worked on both previous editions of the Concise.

The most obvious change since the second edition of the Concise is in the illustrations. The color insert of maps has been replaced by black-and-white maps accompanying country articles. One hundred black-and-white photographs, mostly portraits of such people as Aretha Franklin and Gertrude Stein, have been added. Some articles new to this edition (which weren't in the The Columbia Encyclopedia either) include Campbell, Kim; multimedia; network (which mentions the Internet); and Jordan, Michael. Entries updated over The Columbia Encyclopedia include the table of Justices of the Supreme Court, which now lists Ruth Bader Ginsburg; Euthanasia, which notes Jack Kevorkian; and a table accompanying Olympic Games, which includes Sydney as the site for the 2000 games. European Union replaces European Community, reflecting the name change since the Maastricht Treaty.

What does The Columbia Encyclopedia have that The Concise Columbia doesn't? It has 50,000 entries versus 17,000 (many entries for places and people were dropped in the Concise), bibliographies at the ends of longer entries, and pronunciation given more consistently. It also has a bargain price of $99.

The Concise Columbia Encyclopedia is admirably up-to-date and will prove useful in libraries and as a home and office desk reference. Sandy Whiteley

One of my favorite reference tools . . .
By N. Christy
I purchased the 1983 edition of this wonderful little reference when it first came out and have used it extensively over the last 19 years. I've rarely been disappointed in the accuracy of information, or the ease of use. As an 8th grade teacher, I find my students are constantly seeking answers. Often, the larger encyclopedia are too wordy and difficult for my students to comprehend on first reading. If I hand them my Columbia, they can get a pithy summary of their topic, which then enables them to understand the more in-depth entries.
In addition to containing an amazing amount of information in a compact format, the illustrations are clear and informative, and the typeface is easy on the eyes.
In short, this is a wonderful tool and I have been known to recommend its purchase to students and parents -- whether or not they already have a full set of encyclopedia at home.

Great Reference
By Gerald
We have an older, very worn out version, which this one replaces. This is our go-to for those many questions from religions to geographical locations, and basic world maps. Would love to have this on a tablet.

Very good coverage, and concise. Will keep the older version by my easy chair.

Not As good as the First Edition
By Simon-Sez
A reference that can't decide what it is - whether compact or concise. The first edition was a compact gem which was an easy "go to" reference that was easy to handle, and welllll ... concise. This 3rd edition loses the convenience of the first and is awkward to handle - too heavy and thus loses the virtues of the first. I can see why it died a slow and painful death. Not reccomended.

The Letters of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn WaughFrom Houghton Mifflin

Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh, two of the twentieth century's most gifted writers, matched wits and exchanged insults in a continuous irreverent dialogue. Their delicious letters, most never before published (for fear of speaking ill of the living), provide colorful glimpses of both lives, of an enduring but thorny friendship, and of the literary and social circles of London and Paris at midcentury. Waugh and Mitford came out of the group of London socialites known as the Bright Young Things; they both found best-selling success in the 1940s, Waugh with Brideshead Revisited, Mitford with The Pursuit of Love. In their letters they sharpened their wits at the expense of friends and enemies alike and eagerly dissected their friends, including Harold Acton, Graham Greene, the Sitwells, Duff and Diana Cooper, Randolph Churchill, and their favorite butt, Cyril Connolly. Waugh's pessimistic brand of Roman Catholicism clashed with Mitford's cheerful iconoclasm; her francophilia only fueled he

Amazon.com Review
Charlotte Mosley's careful collection of Nancy Mitford's and Evelyn Waugh's delightfully careless letters immerses one in a lost whirl. The two writers met in London in the late 1920s, but their correspondence didn't take off until mid-World War II, when it quickly became an exaggeration-fest. Mitford, for example, matches Waugh's surreal reports from Europe with one about an M.P. swelling up before his fellow politicians' eyes: "Well, it took 2 ambulances to get him away & now he lies on 4 beds with his trunk hanging out the window. Let nobody say that war time London lacks fantasy."

For the next 21 years, these gifted gossips would render the ridiculous sublime and vice versa, turning (and then only mildly) serious in discussions of reading and writing, preferring to glide over the problematic and emotional. Throughout, Mitford likes to play the euphoric, lazy pupil, Waugh the master grammarian, theologian, and meanie. The exchanges on their own works in progress--particularly on Brideshead Revisited and The Pursuit of Love--are an important addition to literary history, but the book's true exhilaration lies in Mitford and Waugh's knowing--and knowingly vile--comic timing. Irresistibly offensive.

From Booklist
Mosley's family connection to Mitford (she is married to Mitford's nephew) provided access to voluminous correspondence that led to a previous collection of the novelist's letters. This volume, entirely devoted to the exchange of correspondence between two celebrated members of Britain's literati, spans the years 1944 through 1966 and chronicles the great friendship between Waugh, author of, among other books, Brideshead Revisited, and Mitford, who wrote The Sun King and other books. Snippy in their repartee, Mitford and Waugh consistently entertain each other. Without a doubt, they will also entertain readers interested in vicariously stepping back in time to connect with writers, artists, and political figures, such as Graham Greene, Cecil Beaton, and Randolph Churchill. Witnessing the circle of well-known acquaintances that crossed the paths of these two lively, provocative, and intimately connected minds provides endlessly fascinating material for reflection. Alice Joyce

From Kirkus Reviews
Twenty years (194666) of reciprocal, unconditional support between the twin sensibilities and manifestly unlike personalities of Nancy Mitford and Evelyn Waugh, expressed in a private shorthand of shared history and coined language. Mitford, refreshingly, ``can never take [her]self seriously as a femme de lettres'' or anything else; Waugh, depressive and dyspeptic, finds her characterological happiness ``entirely indecent,'' and her punctuation ``pitiable,'' but convention is hardly her strong suit. Or his. They write about writing (especially their own) and about politics and economics and money- -Waugh unbendingly conservative, Mitford flexibly socialist (``All the poor people in the world & so on. It's terrible to love clothes as much as I do''). But chiefly they write about Society, exchanging news of scandals and slights in their overlapping circles, peevishly keeping tabs on their pets: Cyril Connolly, a.k.a. Smartyboots or just S. Boots; Diana ``Honks'' Mitford Mosley, the fascist sister; Lady Diana ``Honks'' (also) Cooper and husband, Duff; Jessica ``Dekka'' Mitford, the communist sister; cousin Randolph Churchill, not always ``on speakers'' with Nancy; ``Prod,'' her mostly absentee husband, Peter Rodd; the ``Colonel,'' her mostly absentee lover, Gaston Palewski. Their common references can be suffocatingly precious or jarring--they consistently consider Jews a breed apart. Their contrariness bonds them at least as much and makes for better material: Mitford is a passionate expatriate who settles in France after the war and sprinkles her letters with idiomatic French; Waugh is a resolute Francophobe who tolerates America (which she abhors); he's a father, she's childless. Withal, they seek each other's counsel and salve each other's loneliness irreplaceably. Editor Mosley (wife of Mitford's nephew and editor of Love from Nancy, 1993) orders their high gossip appreciatively and authoritatively, contributing conscientious footnotes, welcome biographical apparatus, and the admonition that the whole correspondence is ``to be read as entertainment, not as the unvarnished truth.'' Best in controlled doses. Quite the battle of wits. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Cat Claws at Ten Paces

Evelyn to Nancy 12 Nov 1944:
'In the hope of keeping him quiet for a few hours Freddy & I have bet Randolph [Churchill] 20 pounds that he cannot read the whole Bible in a fortnight. It would have been worth it at the price. Unhappily it has not had the result we hoped. He has never read any of it before and is hideously excited; keeps reading quotations aloud or merely slapping his side and chortling "God, isn't God a s##t". '

What more can you say about such giant personalities? These letters can be catty, wildly funny, and rarely boring. A combined conversational autobiography.

If you enjoy any of either of these writer's work or their personality do not hesitate to buy this book at any price!

In the full glare of their correspondence, all the wrinkles show...
By Sigrid Olsen
At some point...I have to stop reading about the Mitford sisters. However, I guess I'm not ready to get off the train--though I keep wanting to! Like all my guilty pleasures, I return to this one like a dog returning to its own vomit. Yes, this book is compulsively readable (but take it in slowly, else you'll feel like you're eating cake--morning noon and night).

You'll read about Waugh picking at Miss Mitford's grammar, while Nancy tries to "buck up" Waugh with his health concerns. I guess I expected that at certain points there would be profound discussions about life...but it's all gossip, remembrance, allusions to sisters, non u and u speech, and massive neediness about the Colonel, Nancy's great love. Underneath all the correspondence are endless money concerns and hustling to make a buck (and thank heavens, as I love Mitford's Pompadour and Frederick the Great.) Wow...was that the Holocaust that just happened (?) the Cold War (?) nope...you won't find any of that here. Nancy gets down to the more important things, like aspic and Pammy Churchill.

I WILL get off this train....

West Wind: Poems and Prose Poems, by Mary Oliver

The New York Times has called Mary Oliver's poems "thoroughly convincing - as genuine, moving, and implausible as the first caressing breeze of spring." In this stunning collection of forty poems - nineteen previously unpublished - she writes of nature and love, of the way they transform over time. And the way they remain constant. And what did you think love would be like? A summer day? The brambles in their places, and the long stretches of mud? Flowers in every field, in every garden, with their soft beaks and their pastel shoulders? On one street after another, the litter ticks in the gutter. In one room after another, the lovers meet, quarrel, sicken, break apart, cry out. One or two leap from windows. Most simply lean, exhausted, their thin arms on the sill. They have done all they could. The golden eagle, that lives not far from here, has perhaps a thousand tiny feathers flowing from the back of its head, each one shaped like an infinitely small but perfect spear.

Amazon.com Review
In lines pulled taut by the tension between the silent beauty of nature and the poet's longing for words, Mary Oliver has again provided readers with plenty to think about. Consider "Stars": "How can I hope to be friends / with the hard white stars / whose flaring and hissing are not speech / but a pure radiance? / How can I hope to be friends / with the yawning spaces between them / where nothing, ever, is spoken?" Yet Oliver does strike up a kind of friendship between nature's inexpressible beauty and the necessity and solace of language. She writes vividly of each, noting the way "the sunlight and shadows are chasing each other," (from "The Dog Has Run Off Again"), in one instance, while elsewhere describing the excitement of writing poems: "little curls little shafts / of letters words / little flames leaping" (from "Forty Years"). Oliver is one of the most honored poets now writing in the English language, and, along with Wendell Berry, Gary Snyder, and A.R. Ammons, an important part of the revival we are seeing in contemporary pastoral poetry.

From Library Journal
Although her papers may scatter as the west wind sweeps through her room, Oliver's house is in order. From the chaos of the world, her poems distill what it means to be human and what is worthwhile about life. Echoing the Romantics and Whitman, she affirms the value of aloneness with nature, of watching and listening?not just to get it down as art but simply to live it: "And to tell the truth I don't want to let go of the wrists/ of idleness, I don't want to sell my life for money,/ I don't even want to come in out of the rain." While practically every poem in this collection is about death, joy and death are inseparable: "If there is life after the earth-life, will you come with me?" The prose-poem referred to in the title?a 13-part series addressed to a lover?sums up a humble life lived to the fullest in a cricket's imagined musings: "It thought: 'here I am still, in my black suit, warm and content'?and drew a little music from its dark thighs." For all collections.?Ellen Kaufman, Dewey Ballantine Law Lib., New York
Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
What news does Oliver bring from her beloved woods and seashore? What bright bits of wisdom has she woven into the airy but sturdy basketry of her poems? In an ardent opting for freedom, Oliver says simply, "I don't want to sell my life for money," and yet there is nothing simple about it, or in her declaring that sometimes she just doesn't want to come in from the rain or put a stop to her dog's happy romp through wet leaves. At 60, Oliver is amazed that she feels so much as she did 40 years ago, long before she won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, long before her need to preserve, in the mobile shrine of words, the beauty she observes in nature brought her "pomp" and recognition. Oliver has always written to express gratitude, but, for all her meditativeness, what engages her most is not placidity but passion: wind-twisted trees, birds of prey, river rapids, darkness, and love. And as Oliver intends, her poems do indeed make us "shiver with praise." Donna Seaman

A positive review and a positively unusual request
By Mike Smith
This book, to me, is about as good as poetry gets. I'm not a guy who reads a lot of poetry, but I've always enjoyed reading Mary Oliver's writing when I'm camping or exploring, and this book is among her best. She has an amazing feel for the natural world, and does a terrific job of transfering something as abstract as the feeling of a sunset into ordered, beautiful words. This is the kind of poetry even people who hate poetry might enjoy.

My older sister gave me a copy of this book a couple of years before she committed suicide. The copy she gave me was full of notes she'd written to me throughout it, and I have searched everywhere for that copy. I think I must have left it somewhere, or given it away or thoughtlessly sold it before my sister died. If anyone out there ever comes across a used, paperback copy of "West Wind" inscribed to Mike from LeeAnne, I would pay almost anything to buy it from you.

(No forgeries, please.)

Mary Oliver is a spiritual teacher as well as a poet.
By A Customer
I have treasured Mary Oliver's poetry for a number of years. This new collection, West Wind, is both a departure and a development from her earlier work. Nature is her muse, and she still uses nature's events as metaphors for spiritual awareness and growth - what's new is looser, more varied poetic forms and a playfulness coupled with "death" as a recurring theme. Mary, at 60-plus, is facing mortality. As a reader, she can take me anywhere and I'm more than willing to go - even into death. She is not only my favorite poet, but my most important spiritual teacher as well. This book has a place in everyone's poetry and/or dharma collection.

The Well of Sacrifice, by Chris Eboch

Eveningstar Macaw lives in a glorious Mayan city in the ninth century. When the king falls ill and dies, the city begins to crumble. An evil high priest, Great Skull Zero, orders the sacrifice of those who might become king, including Eveningstar's beloved brother. Suspicious of the High Priest's motives, Eveningstar attempts to save her brother, thus becoming an acknowledged enemy of the High Priest. Condemned to be thrown into the Well of Sacrifice, Eveningstar must find a way not only to save her own life but to rescue her family and her city from the tyrannical grasp of Great Skull Zero. Set against the vivid background of everyday life at the height of the Mayan golden age and illustrated with striking black-and-white paintings, Eveningstar's candid, gripping, and not-for-the-faint-of-heart account of the last days of a great city will have readers at the edge of their seats. Afterword.

From Publishers Weekly
First novelist Eboch accomplishes quite a feat here: he manages to make the bloodletting rituals and human sacrifice practices of the Mayans the central point of this novel, yet creates a character readers will care deeply about: Eveningstar Macaw. Eveningstar, a resourceful and spunky girl, lives in a lavish city of gold near the jungle. Her brother, Smoke Shell, possesses the leadership qualities of a fearless noble who may one day sit on the throne. Her older sister, Feather Dawn, self-absorbed and haughty, has two redeeming virtues: her skill at the loom and her beauty. But when the ailing king dies and his high priest, Great Skull Zero, commands that all possible successors be thrown into the well of sacrifice to drown or be saved by the gods, Eveningstar vows to save her brotherAand to stop Feather from being married off to the conniving Zero. Eboch cushions a plot of treachery and heroism with lush details of daily life in a ninth-century Mayan city that's beginning to crumble. Here, fathers wear green quetzal feathers; mothers cook tortillas, pumpkin and papaya; and beautiful girls with slanted foreheads wear rings in their noses and heavy jade and gold jewelry that pulls down their earlobes. Readers may blanch at some of the descriptions of ceremonies and sacrifices ("The king pulled the end of the rope through his tongue and dropped it into the bowl.... He danced with blood pouring down his chest"). Watching this unorthodox 12-year-old girl outwit a high priest, escape jail, rescue her sister and more makes for a fast-paced read. An author's note describes the historical context for the tale. Ages 9-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8-Set in a large Mayan city during the ninth century, this well-written story follows the exploits of Eveningstar Macaw, the youngest daughter of a well-to-do merchant family. Rather than pursue the traditional custom of learning domestic arts and managing a household, she prefers to become a healer like her mother. When Eveningstar's brother, Smoke Shell, performs an act of heroism, the family is elevated to noble status. After the death of their popular king, Smoke Shell is considered a likely candidate as a successor, but an ambitious and unscrupulous high priest endangers anyone who is perceived as a competitor for the throne. After making an unsuccessful attempt to save her brother's life, Eveningstar becomes involved in efforts to thwart the plans of the high priest, risking her own safety. The adventures of this tenacious heroine are suspenseful and entertaining, providing readers with an exciting story and a realistic feel for everyday life in and ceremonial practices of the ancient Mayan culture. Well-researched historical fiction and a good read.

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-8. Set in ninth-century Guatemala, at the height of the Mayan civilization, this is the story of Eveningstar Macaw, a young girl who finds the fate of her city in her hands. When she discovers enemy soldiers in the jungle while she is hunting medicinal herbs, Eveningstar Macaw tells her older brother, Smoke Shell, who saves the city. But the honor conferred upon Smoke Shell and his family turns out for the worse after the death of the king puts him in line to rule. Harsh, highly placed enemies sacrifice Smoke Shell to the gods; then it is up to Eveningstar Macaw to avenge her brother and eventually save herself. Eboch does a good job of balancing the many details of Mayan life with an electrifying--sometimes gory--story. Eboch does not pull back much as she chronicles both the sacrifices and the ritual bloodletting that were part of the Mayan culture. Of course, shocking events won't deter readers who will already be caught up in the excitement that reaches a high-velocity climax as Eveningstar Macaw struggles to avoid the fate her enemies have plotted for her. To be illustrated with a few well-placed pictures. Ilene Cooper

Book puts Flesh on the Bone of Maya Society
By Jason Golomb
Chris Bloch's "Well of Sacrifice" is a fictional anthropological tour of Maya life set during the tenth century just as the Maya civilization has peaked and the mighty Mesoamerican civilzation starts to crumble. This wonderful book, targeted at 6th grade and up, is strong in historical and cultural content and makes a terrific complement to an educational program, or in preparation for travel to the Yucatan or anywhere in Central America where the Maya had significant presence. Imbued with cultural context, Bloch's narrative makes the educational content fully engaging.

While Maya nobility and royalty play a key role in the story, the focus of Bloch's book is on the common people, specifically one young girl named Eveningstar Macaw, and how, through the will of her personality, changes this one Maya city. The Story is not action-filled until the last 40 pages or so, but it moves quickly and Evengstar is well-developed.

She's very respectful and religious, but not blindly so. She's free-thinking and logical, while also proscribing to her deep religious foundational beliefs (sacrifices and all).

Through Eveningstar, author Bloch takes the reader on a tour of Mayan society, and this what makes the book truly standout. We read about the Maya culture, religion, as well as their calendaring system. As Eveningstar finds her way through the difficulties of Mayan life, the reader learns about the society's professions, food, hobbies, trade, death rituals, medicinal and construction capabilities, and military. Bloch even builds a scene at a ball court, found at many Maya sites throughout Mesoamerica. The story concludes with a view into some of the climatological, military, religious and societal reasons as to why the Classic Maya age came to an end.

Bloch takes the archaeological-based realities of Maya life, and communicates it through a strong and simple narrative.

I enjoyed this book as an adult. It puts flesh on the bone of a people I know relatively little about. I'll ask my 11 and14 year olds to read it before we travel to the Yucatan and visit Chchen Itza and Tulum.

Captivating book!
By Maryam
Eveningstar Macaw lives in an ancient Mayan city, where high priests and kings are the ultimate rulers. She helps her mother get herbs from the jungle for her mother is a healer. Eveningstar knows the jungle inside-out. One day she comes upon a group of 'savages' who are enemies of the Mayans. She immediately warns everyone in the city. The savages are caught and some are kept for sacrifice while the others are kept as slaves for the noblemen. Eveningstar met a savage boy in the jungle and named him Small. Evening Star's family took him in as a servant. Eveningstar's oldest brother, Smokeshell is met with much honor after the capturing of the savages for he helps capture them. When the old King Flint Sky god dies, the evil High Priest, Great Skull Zero is left to rule. Great Skull Zero does not want anyone to threaten his spot on the throne, so he calls out a list of men who will be thrown into the Well of Sacrifice. All of these men are noblemen, and are soldiers who are highly respected. Among the chosen men are Smokeshell and Feather Dawn's fiance.(Feather Dawn is Eveningstar's snotty and headstrong sister) Eveningstar quickly figures that Great Skull Zero is only having those soldiers killed for his own greed, and not for the Gods. From there the story takes a great leap from peaceful to dangerous and suspense-filled. Excellent book!

The Lost Grizzlies: A Search for Survivors in the Wilderness of Colorado, by Rick Bass

The Lost Grizzlies chronicles the ongoing search for proof that a small number of grizzly bears still lives in the isolated mountain wilds of southern Colorado. Rick Bass turns his considerable talents to an evocation of wilderness beauty and the history of human encroachment that may, or may not, have wiped out the last of these massive, solitary bears from their southern range.

From Publishers Weekly
Elk and black bear are abundant in Colorado's San Juan mountains. Does the grizzly still exist there? Since 1979, when a man was mauled by a grizzly, there have been a few unconfirmed sightings. With grizzly expert Doug Peacock and biologist Dennis Sizemore, Bass (The Nine-Mile Wolves) made three trips to the area to follow up the sightings and to search for signs (tracks and claw marks on trees, scat) that they would send to a laboratory for confirmation. The result is an engaging account of their adventures. For all three, just being in the wilderness was exhilarating; to Bass, the awareness that the bears might exist there was the heart of this search. On a solo climb at about 11,000 feet, Bass encountered a large bear he believes was a grizzly (again, no proof). Here he conveys in freewheeling style his appreciation of the wilderness and a strong sense of camaraderie.

YA?Grizzly bears had not been seen in the San Juan Mountains of southern Colorado for almost 15 years when a small group of men set out in 1990 to seek definitive evidence that the animals still existed there. They sought a tuft of fur, footprints, or, best of all, photographs to convince wildlife officials that these mountains still provided a habitat for grizzlies, a habitat that should be preserved. Over the next two years, two more expeditions were made until, finally, a confrontation... "I look for a tree to climb, my heart in my throat. That glimpse of the rolling humped back and the wild, wild eyes is all I get before the bear's flight takes it down to a wooded ravine and away..." Bass eloquently describes the pristine mountain meadows, the icy streams, the old-growth forests and the men who seek to preserve them. His account is about friendship, commitment, and love of the outdoors as much as it is about bears. YAs interested in the environment, in wildlife preservation, and in adventure in the natural world will find this book exciting and informative.?Molly Connally, Kings Park Library, Fairfax County, VA

From Library Journal
Following David Petersen's Ghost Grizzlies (LJ 7/95), this is the second book to appear this year on the possible continued existence of grizzly bears in Colorado. Bass describes three expeditions to the San Juan Mountains to locate evidence of grizzlies. As in Ghost Grizzlies, the characters?and the language?are colorful. Petersen, a native Coloradan, more completely details the evidence for grizzlies and the political ramifications. Bass (In the Loyal Mountains, LJ 5/15/95), a short story and nature writer who lives in Montana, sets out only to chronicle the expeditions in which he participated. Like Peterson, he describes the spectacular mountain scenery and the difficulties of getting to potential grizzly habitat, but he is perhaps better at bringing the experience of the wild country alive. Both authors have written worthy books for the general reader.

A visit to the San Juan Mountains
By A Customer
I'm not a voracious reader, but I'm reasonably well-read and have spent A LOT of time in grizzly bear territory in B.C. It was intriguing for me to read of the descriptions of the terrain around the San Juan mountains in Colorado - terrain that must be very different than that of the rainforests of western Canada. Bass paints a fairly good picture of the landscape, but as one who has never spent time in the San Juan mountains, I still was left to wonder about the vegetation, the color of the soil, the type of rocks.
Bass weaves an interesting tale, presenting to the reader what seems to be a slightly embellished factual account. It took me quite awhile to settle into the book due to his present tense writing style: "I walk up the trail" rather than "I walked up the trail" (past tense). He portrays his encounters with wildlife with less caution and wariness than he depicts the people in the story. I relate to his notion of peace when in nature, unsettled feelings around people. His outlook on life seems minutely cynical (or at least skeptical) but I like that in a person. I remember smiling and/or nodding at some of his observations about the world, thoughts and realizations that can come into the mind when one's perspective is annointed with the serenity, beauty, and perfection of nature. He does an effective job of recounting the experience of the several searches of which he was part. He gives what seems to be an honest account of the troubles, successes, injuries, meals, frustrations, jokes, and other events that combined into the whole experience. So authentic and genuine were his descriptions that I could see clearly the scenes he described.
I am somewhat curious about how Doug Peacock felt about Bass' portrayal of him in the book. I think I've figured out that Peacock is a real person, not a fictitious character. The Peacock character comes off as kind of unstable, very savvy in the wilderness, and more than a little quirky. Many real people might fit that description, but few might find themselves cited and depicted in a best-selling author's book. It struck me as I read that Peacock seemed unique enough to be real, but individual enough to eschew the attention brought upon him by this written account.
I have no idea if the climax of the book is fact or fiction, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I recommend it to devotees of the magificent grizzly bear and lovers of the outdoors.

I Believe It Was a Grizzly
By Jena Ball
This book is a unique combination of comedy, real-life adventure and a luminous testimony to one of America's most endangered and mythical beasts. Bass is at his best here, capturing the hearts of his readers through an alternately hilarious and spine tingling account of his journey into the Colorado mountains in search of grizzly bears.
The problem facing Bass and his two friends is that the grizzly bear is believed to be extinct in Colorado. However, several undocumented sightings and signs have convinced them that the bears exist in the remotest regions of the mountain range. Thus they are out to do all they can to locate bears and document their findings.
In the resulting adventures we find the three companions trapsing through woods, sliding down canyon walls, confronting bureaucrats and tracking down bear sign. Things are complicated, and given a distinctly uneasy quality, by the behavior of Doug Peacock. Peacock, himself a well-known author and champion of the grizzly bear, is plagued by frequent and dramatic mood swings. His alarmingly volatile temper, moments of intense introspection and frequent outbursts of graphic profanity have the reader feeling like he/she is walking on eggshells. Because Bass has done such a good job of describing his friend, and how he came to be the way he is, it's easy to forgive Peacock his peculiar behavior. However, it is not easy or pleasant to read.
As the story unfolds, and the three men get closer to their goal, the tension becomes almost unbearable. When Bass finally sees a bear, after months of exhausting effort and disappointment, the scene unfolds in classic Bass technicolor with heart racing clarity and insight. "When I am ten yards from that fallen tree - which I am all but ignoring, focusing on the deer - a creature leaps up from behind it, seemingly right in my face, a brown creature with great hunched shoulders. It's a bear with a big head, and for the smallest fraction of time our eyes meet. The bear's round brown eyes are wild in alarm, and mine the same or larger, I'm sure. The bear's rich chocolate color, like a moose and nearly as big, an animal of such immense size that indeed my first thought, the one right before fear, is: That bear's as big as a moose!"
I won't ruin the suspense by telling you what happens next. It should be enough to know that Bass neither disappoints nor fails to find deeper currents of truth running beneath his experience. This is another book that shouldn't be missed. Just don't expect it to reveal its gifts easily.

A Superb Read!!
By A Customer
Lost Grizzlies is a superb read! Rick Bass is fast becoming (may already be) our premier writer of the american wilderness. Bass' descriptions of the books characters and the wilds of the San Juan Mountains of Colorado are vivid. I enjoyed Bass' descriptions of Doug Peacock's brilliance and brutishness. I enjoyed reading ABOUT Peacock almost as much as I enjoyed reading Peacock's book (Grizzly Years).
