FLORIDA ROYALPALM Roystonea elata (Bartr.) F. Harper Pl. 48 The smooth, cement-colored and bulging lower trunk topped by a smooth bright-green crownshaft cylinder is distinctive. Ring scars faint. Fronds 15' or longer. Frond segments do not lie flat but grow all around the midrib. Height to 125'. Flowers greenish white, developing from a spearlike green spathe at the base of the 5'–6' long crownshaft. Fruits blue to purple, 1?2" in diameter, leathery. Rich soils, hammocks (swamp islands).

From the deep orange endpapers, through generous margins and clear print, to the multitude of evocative illustrations, the volume is a delight. Foreman's intense watercolors and lively ink-wash illustrations go far to help create the moods of the stories. The storytelling is unevenGarfield is able to evoke the heartbreak of King Lear but fails to convey the crazy humor of Twelfth Night but it is generally competent enough. However, Garfield's visual descriptions are so specific and so lavish; his line interpretations so absolute that he almost guarantees that any given production will seem inadequate after such a buildup! Libraries that have Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare (Macmillan, 1963; o.p.) or Chute's Stories from Shakespeare (World, 1956; o.p.) probably don't need to add this luxury item. Garfield covers only 12 of the best-known plays, while the Lambs tell 20 tales and Chute leads the pack with 36. While Garfield's style is more accessible to modern readers and covers the plays more completely than the evasive Victorianisms of the Lambs, he must take a back seat when compared with the lucid straightforward prose in Chute's book. MICHAEL FOREMAN is one of the world's leading illustrators of children's books and the winner of several major awards, including the Kate Greenaway Medal. His work ranges from picture books to fairy tales and original children's fiction. He is the illustrator of many Harcourt books, including Michael Foreman's Mother Goose, Joan of Arc, and Arthur, High King of Britain. He divides his time between London and St. Ives, England, his childhood home.

Leon Garfield, the distinguished author of more than thirty books for children and adults, has won numerous literary awards and honors, including the Carnegie Medal. Before his death in 1996, he lived in London with his wife, author Vivien Alcock, and their daughter.

The Best Way In!

These are stunningly well told versions of the plays.
They give not only the story, but a wonderful sense of the theatrical - you read and enjoy a visual sensation as well as the speech of Shakespeare (all the words 'spoken' are taken directly from Shakespeare's scripts).
Romeo and Juliet, for example, sweats in the heat of Verona. There is a fantastic image of wasps fighting! You go directly into the story - and moral considerations are there.
The pictures support the text well- giving yet another dimension to the book.
Forget Lamb!
I've used these stories in the classroom for many years now - partly because young people (11 through to much older!) relate to them -but also because I really enjoy re-reading them.
(There is a whole set of Abridged Shakspeare by Garfield too - and wonderful Animations done with Russian animators!)

Excellent choice for English teachers!

Excellent choice for English teachers who want to review Shakespeare's classics with students. I have also used this with my middle school students to introduce them to Shakespeare. The stories are written in clear language so that students will be able to understand the wonderful stories of the bard without being intimidated by Shakespearean language A must for all English teachers!

A Doorway to a New World

When I took my long service leave, I bought Garfield's books of Shakespeare's Stories (both volumes) and I hired videos of Shakespeare's plays. Working with these and the texts of the plays, I gave myself a course in Shakespeare's plays. It was one of the highlights of my life.
I had supposed the Laurence Olivier was some pompous old fart with a plum in his mouth. He is ELECTRIC. His Hamlet is a study in depression. His voice in "To be or not to be" is scarcely audible but carries so much emotion.
In all, I watched 22 different plays - my favourites, Richard 11 and Hamlet, in several different versions. I followed the BBC series which uses the same actors from one play to the next so that the Duke of Gloucester in one play is played by the same actor who later becomes Richard 11 in the next play.
Leon Garfield's story-telling with its light touch of irony and its perfect choice of words opened a door that I had assumed was marked "Other people only". Garfield wrote marvellous children's book and I've read them all but these books are the best of his achievements and they've made a big difference to my life.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

A bedtime favorite

I bought this book because of my own fond memories of Curious George, and am happy to see that my 10-month-old son feels similarly. The story is long enough to have a real plot, yet short enough to keep his interest. The repetitive nature of the text ("bunny" appears on almost every page) also seems to reinforce the association between the text and the illustrations. Several of our friends have pet rabbits, and my son invariably pulls this book off the shelf after visits with them!

The only book my 17th month-old really interacts with

We have a huge library of board and picture books. We read three to my son every night. This book is his absolute favorite. It is the only one that gets more of a response than just "doggie!" or "choo-choo".
My son laughs when George holds the bunny, pouts when the bunny runs away, and cheers "yay!" when mother and baby bunny are reunited.
He broke his arm this labor day weekend. :-( He doesn't want his toys, he doesn't want his blanket, he doesn't want milk, he just wants daddy to read him this book!

Really Big and Heavy

The book arrived within a reasonable amount of time and was in excellent condition. However, to say that I was surprised upon receiving this would be an understatement; the book was HUGE and HEAVY! Chugging it to and back from campus to the dorms (about 1 mile or so) was a pretty daunting task to say the least. Also, the pages were so thin and fragile and the text was incredibly small. The benefit, however, is that some of the words are defined at the bottom of the page. If this will be staying on your bookshelf and you are a fan of Shakespeare, then by all means buy it. But if you are a student, I would not advise spending a couple of hundred dollars on a book you will be barely using--especially when you can just purchase the plays individually.

Have you ever wondered what the effects of a media-centered world can have on a child? Gloria De Gaetano tells us her ideas in her book called Screen Smarts. Childhood is a fundamental time of development for the human brain. In our formative years we learn the necessary thinking skills to function in life, ie: problem solving, eye-hand coordination, critical thinking, etc. We develop these skills through everyday things that children do in play. However, things are changing. A lot of children's spare time is spent watching TV, playing video games, or using the computer. This means less time is spent exercising ( children today are more out of shape than ever before) or creative activities. The less time spent in tactile exploration of the sensory world ( real life), the harder it is for the brain to develop certain areas. Looking at two-dimensional screen images is much different than actually experiencing 3-D activities, which is what the brain needs. Gloria encourages parents to turn off the TV a little more and to do something like read a book with their children.
All of this may seem some-what depressing to the average parent living in today's world. Time and energy is not easy to come by. So Gloria also suggests some ways to make TV viewing more beneficial to a small, developing brain. Treat a TV program as you would a book. Ask the child what they think the show will be about at the beginning. When something important is about to happen, mention the music or something else pertaining to the event. Ask the child what they think is going to happen next. At the end of a program, go back to what they thought it was going to be about at the beginning of the show. Discuss the differences and the similarities, even talk about what the outcome might have been if something happened differently. Of course different kinds of questions would be asked and discussed with different age groups. This thoughtful discussion helps the child to actually think, analyze, and predict what they are watching.
I suggest Gloria's book to anyone. It is very interesting and you can learn so much from it. Becoming media literate is a smart thing to do...Control your environment or it will control you!

An easily readable documentation on the problems and solutions involving video and screen technologies. Screen Smarts is under-appreicated and ahead of its time. It is a must read for any parent, educator, or any socially conscious person.

Fantastic book for raising children in media age.

This book reveals insights on understanding the effects of television on your children. DeGaetano is a suberb author. Screen Smarts is the most informative book on the subject matter.
