By the time Cynda figures out that Victor is a vampire and the murderer of the ghostly girl, she is well on the way to becoming a ghost herself, as is Todd. How Cynda overcomes her thralldom makes for a deliciously spine-tingling story-all the more gripping for its sturdy psychological underpinnings. Ages 11-up.

Fantastic read

starts off with a strong flame and soon fizzles out

Due to the recent craze with this vampire genre in books and on film, with sexy immortals falling for sweet and nonchalant girls hoping to give them everlasting love and life I was taken aback when reading this book. I forgot that these (heartthrobs) vampires are supposed to be merciless bloodsucking killers! But thanks to Look For Me By The Moonlight I wont ever forget it again!

Cynda is the young, plain, impressionable heroin moving to Maine to live with her estranged father

at his old inn. He left her when she was six to be with his now wife, a former student in his literature class. They have a young annoying son, Todd and one on the way. Immediately Cynda starts feeling alone and unwelcome in her quite frightening old house. She meets a young, artistic loner named Will who seems interested in her. I thought Will was the awaited vampire that would sweep her off her feet. Although she swooned after him for a day or so he was out of her book the moment she met Vincent. He's a charming older and wiser man with good looks and a great personality. She and her parents are taken with this worldly man almost immediately. They're impressed by his intelligence and conversation. But Todd, Will and even the family cat are disturbed by his presence although Cynda doesn't seem to notice or care.

There relationship seems quite strange considering he's likely in his mid-thirties and she's sixteen. He makes secret gestures and passes at her soon inviting her to join him in the woods at night where she loses her head and heart. Making out with him frequently Cynda thinks she's in love and feels no wrong and even I wanted it to work. Inappropriate? Yes, But I figured "there vampires right?" There moral compasses must differ quite a bit from us mere mortals!

Before long Vincents real motives are brought to light when he begins sucking Cynda's blood each

night and draining her of energy in the day time. Slowly he makes her slip into a depression and change into a vampire herself beacause soon she too only craves blood from others. Transformed into this robotic state Vincent uses intimidation to keep her from telling her parents who stupidly think she has a flu.

During the rushed ending to the book Cynda decides at the last minute to get rid of Vincent with the help of Will. What kept this book from being good was the fact that it was beyond realistic. Even though this is a book about vampires and ghosts, etc. I still found it hard to believe that Cynda's parents were so wrapped up in their own lives they hardly noticed a change in their daughter. Even when Cynda cried and pleaded for her father not to leave her side saying "Don't leave me daddy, stay with me, don't let him come back.", her father still suspects nothing of the stranger in their house and leaves Cynda alone in her room acting as if she irritated him. His young wife proves to be no help either and only when Vincent is dead do they act like normal human beings but I guess the authors excuse for this was they were "under a spell". How convenient!

It was an easy an mildly enjoyable read. Some humor and suspense tried to fill in the holes of the plot but it was OK. I applaud the author for reminding me that not all vampires are friendly and want to seduce me.

I would recommend this book because it is very suspenseful and keeps your attention. There is a lot of detail in the story which makes it more interesting to read. The story also has unsuspecting events, which makes it exciting. This book would be suited more for girls because it it's about romance and the consequences that come along with it. The book is about a sixteen year old girl, Cynda, who goes to live with her father after her parents get divorced. He owns a hotel that everybody seems to think is haunted, because a young girl was killed there. Her dad has since been remarried and has one child and one on the way. Between his new wife and kids, Cynda feels left out. Just when she is starting to get the feel of things, a new guest named Vincent comes to stay at the hotel. Cynda falls in love with him, even though he is twice her age. This causes some major conflicts between her and her stepmother. She then finds out that the murders that took place at the hotel were committed by Vincent. Cynda wonders how he could be related to these crimes if they were committed over 50 years ago. Soon everyone will find out who Vincent really is and Cynda feels she has to put a stop to it, before she gets into the middle of it. One of the best aspects of the book was how the author puts so much detail into the story. It is almost like you are there. The exciting details then lead up to the surprising conclusion. The book always keeps you interested and you never want to put it down. One of the bad aspects of the book is that some parts seem too unreal to believe. I think this is one of the most interesting novels to read by Mary Downing Hahn.

Founding Mothers, Widows, native Americans, black slaves and servant girls, they all helped to fight the Revolution.

The inside blurb states it clearly. Ladies, servant girls, black slave women, middle-class matrons and native American women ....these are the founding mothers, all of whom played a crucial role but long neglected role in the economic, political, military, and social life of the colonial America. Wives fought beside their husbands or widows ran the businesses and plantations and some women were known as camp followers who cooked, sewed and did laundry or whatever was needed to lend their hand in the War of the Revolution. Freedom is not Free....never has been and we document that here through the description of colonial America. We are forgetting our roots and the hardships that were given to make this country what some take for granted today. Let us not forget our history or that women played a major roll in this process... A good read in history and documentation on the Birth of our Nation and Freedoms...

Fun and interesting historical book

I found this book not only historically and culturally interesting, but it was also very easy and entertaining to read. It covered a broad spectrum of women and was full of fascinating little bits of information. I also noticed the lack of documentation, which might affect the integrity of the book for some readers. As a Revolutionary War reenactor, I enjoyed this book very much.

Empowering to preteen and teen girls

This book instills the reality that when women are strong, courageous and great leaders, they are not acting like men, they are acting like.... women! Did you know that a woman did just what Paul Revere did? Also, it points out the enormous contribution of running households, farms and schools, and manufacturing textiles, food supplies, etc. to the creation of our country. I had my teenage daughter read it over the summer and she enjoyed it. Recommended for boys or girls.

The author or this book overcomplicates statistics. For instance, it's not difficult to calculate the median but instead of just explaining the general procedure, he provides a huge equation introducing way too many variables for such an easy process.

YA-Mowat begins with a well-written account of his first 12 years spent in various towns in southern Ontario, where his father served as a public librarian. Then they moved to Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the setting for most of this book. There young Farley roamed the Canadian prairies, birding, hiking, camping, and tracking. His enthusiasm and love of the land and its animals are infectious; his knowledge, particularly of birds, is impressive. The growth of a young man is dealt with sensitively, and some of the incidents included are quite funny. The author uses his own childhood poems, letters, articles, and journal entries as well as those of others, namely his father and a maid, effectively. This is a book for any YA with even a passing interest in the outdoors and animals. Mowat's ability to put into perspective his sexual and social rites of passage is a talent that few writers can equal.

This portrait of his youth, marked by humor, sympathy, and understanding, possesses the crystalline clarity, brightness, and color of a child's world--a world in which there already exist the beginnings of most of Mowat's experiences as nature writer and activist. There are no dull pages here; every man, woman, child, and animal mentioned even casually makes an impression. But the book is more than a family album or catalog of events. Out of it rises an authentic picture of Canadian life as it existed in the first half of the century. If Only My Childhood Was Like His....

I've been a big fan of Farley Mowat's literary style since I first read Never Cry Wolf back in junior high school. Even as a 9th grade Earth Science teacher, I show the silver screen adaptation of this great novel. Born Naked, however, is of different 'stuff' than Never Cry Wolf. Here is a book written in a light, easy-to-read fashion that highlights his early years in this great world. We, the readers, are along for the ride when he travels to the Arctic on a research mission with his uncle, or when he makes his daily rounds to inspect the nests of local birds in Saskatchewan. This book is written in a truly entrancing style. I had a very difficult time putting it down. There are some questionable portions in it dealing with his discovery of his own sexuality, but they are far outweighed by the sense of awe and discovery he felt as a youngster. I would heartily recommend this book to anyone that enjoyed Tom Sawyer, Huckleberry Finn, or anyone that wants to experience the childhood they only dreamed about

A Love Song to Nature and Life

If you've read Farley Mowat, you know him as a passionate defender of the beautiful "Others" with whom we share our planet. This book is a joy-filled description of his early life and formation as a nature-lover. We hear of the wild beauty of Canada, the Quixotic plans his father devised and his mother endured, and the daring adventures which will become the foundation for his later writings. Although a light-hearted story overall, Farley does not avoid the difficult times, including a powerful depiction of the effect of the Depression on the Canadian provinces. It is a love song to the strength of character and perseverence of our northern cousins, as well.

When the book ends, the reader, like the writer, wonders if there will ever be such a wonderful time again. Sheer delight.

Outstanding Calculus Book, For Teaching or Reference

The publishers of this book emphasize the quality of the computer generated graphics accompanying the examples; I couldn't agree more. All concepts taught (which are quite clear by themselves) are beautifully illustrated by detailed pictures. I used this book in high school and loved it- so much so that I was inclined to take it to college for further reference. If you are looking for a great introductory calculus book, this is the one.

IMO, this is the best textbook ever written about Calculus!!

This is the single most comprehensive textbook ever written about Calculus. I've read and referenced dozens of textbooks on the subject of Calculus, and this one reigns supreme. In fact, when I decided to finally (officially) take a course in Calculus, the textbook they wanted us to use was so unnecessarily complicated and presented the topics so poorly, that I returned my textbook within a week of starting the course, and immediately ordered this book while flying unaided until it arrived. This book contains all 3 semesters of Calculus, starting with single-variable differentiation and integration, all the way through multi-variable and vector Calculus. It presents concepts in a sequential, logical, and intuitive way, and the section exercises offer a broad spectrum of level of difficulty. Sure, there are more ambitious, involved, and "heady" books out there for those over-achievers, but none with this level of insightful examples and breadth. I now own 4 Calculus textbooks (always good to have multiple sources for reference); this book is still my #1 go-to reference.
To summarize, this is the one and only Calculus book you'll ever need. I can wax poetic about this tome ad nauseum; I still can't believe I got it for so cheap (technically, it was free, since I used the $10 giftcard that Amazon gave me for signing up)!! This was the best transaction I've ever made. I might just buy another; you can't beat this value.

it's still a great calculus book

I must say, even though it's an older edition, I bought this, sorry to say, because of nostalgia. Having said that, it's still a great calculus book, and I've always been satisfied with Larson, Hostetler, and Edward's work.

On both sides of the longest unprotected border in the world, that between the U.S. and Canada, a distinct subculture has evolved. By its mores, those living near the border largely ignore it. Mosher journeyed through the borderland, from Atlantic to Pacific, finding it sometimes harsh and meeting several unusual and some downright strange characters, who range from a bush pilot in Maine and a woman stock car driver in South Dakota to bickering newlyweds at a wayside motel and a weird Montana survivalist. All of them, shaped by a culture that regards customs checks as an inconvenience to be tolerated when not ignored, are independent and tough-minded, and they generally don't give a hoot about laws and regulations. Mosher admits early on that his journey realized a long-nurtured dream, and it isn't surprising that at times his report recounts a quite personal journey of self-discovery. Sea to northern sea; a personal journey along the border

Howard Frank Mosher celebrated his 50th birthday by taking a trip. With his wife's blessing, he loaded the car, got himself some letters of introduction, and started across country, alone.

As autumn was approaching, a southern route might have made the most sense. But not for Mosher. Since childhood, when he and his uncles spent their summers fishing the rivers of Quebec, he'd been fascinated by the north country. So deep was his borealphilia that he'd settled down and raised his family in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom, just a few miles south of the Canadian border. And now, as a 50th birthday present to himself, he set off to explore that border from one end of the country to the other.

In late August, he headed east into Maine, where "farmhouses still sport brown wreaths on their doors, left over from last Christmas." He drove past "listing, bullet-pocked drive-in theater screens no Technicolor presentation or titillating coming attractions have flashed across for years." He wistfully noted "semiabandoned main streets running quickly into the interchangeable edge-of-town commercial strips that the boarded-up downtown stores have defected to."

From the coast of Maine, Mosher pointed the car west. He'd stop whenever he found a reason to. The reasons included flying a light smuggling run with a Quebec bush pilot and learning tricks for catching poachers from an Acadian game warden. They included gaining a new perspective on gambling from a Mohawk leader and hearing local history from old-timers on both sides of the Canadian border.

Mosher also got some unwanted lessons. He was stopped by the U.S. Air Force near a missile silo marked, "Use of Deadly Force Authorized." He was kept awake all night in a cheap motel by a pair of extremely loud newlyweds through one thin wall and an irate trucker banging on the other. And in the mountains of northern Idaho, he was stalked by a camouflaged survivalist armed with a hunting bow and deadly steel-tipped arrows.

Sometimes, Mosher would come across people or places that reminded him of events in his past. On those occasions, he'd slip back for a chapter or two, either to the dying Catskills town where he was raised or to Vermont's Northeast Kingdom where he wrote his five previous books and raised his own two children.

Not every writer would choose to record some of these events, no matter how forcefully they came to memory. One Mosher might have preferred to forget was the response his first book, Disappearances, drew from reviewers. The Montreal Gazette headline put it succinctly: "VERMONT WRITER SHOULD DISAPPEAR."

Over the years, Howard Frank Mosher seems to have hardened up. Two weeks before the trip, Harper's rejected one of his stories as "too linear and old-fashioned." Mosher "nailed the note to the side of my own weathered barn and blasted the living hell out of it with my shotgun..."

Though he shot the review and not the reviewer, it does make one consider one's critical words with care. Still, two things could make this very good book better. One would be a longer tarry with people and places of unusual interest. When you're traveling, it's often hard to slow down, but I'd have liked some longer rest and reflection stops along the way.

But the thing that's really missing is a bloody map. Even better, a bunch of bloody maps. Why Houghton Mifflin didn't see that a travel journal demands charts of the places the author takes readers is a mystery. They could have used the endpapers, could have inserted a center-spread-could, if they were really ambitious, augmented the journey map with detail maps at the beginning of each chapter.

Without maps, the reader faces the choice of staying in bed and trying to imagine exactly where Minnesota's Mesabi territory and Montana's Sweetgrass territory really lie, or trudging downstairs to get the atlas. A warm bed is a terrible thing to leave.

The way to best enjoy North Country is to read it alongside Howard Frank Mosher's last novel, Northern Borders. Together, they are fiction and faction, historical and contemporary, about one place and many. What they share is a celebration of the North Country and a fair sampling of the work of a leading northern writer.

As I read North Country and recalled Northern Borders, I was warmed by the fact that this chronicler of up-country tenacity and grit didn't take the advice of that Montreal reviewer. I'm thankful Howard Frank Mosher didn't disappear.

In honor of his 50th birthday, Howard Mosher decided to take a solo journey exploring his home ground. His chosen turf is the "north country," the borderlands between the United States and Canada. Mosher traveled from Maine to Washington, meandering a few miles one either side of the border.
In this account of his odyssey, Mosher intersperses short anecdotes from his life as a resident and traveler in these areas, combined with mini-sketches of the people and places he encounters. Nobody and no place merits more than three pages of Mosher's spare prose. Mosher voices himself in the taciturn manner of the hardy border people. He strives for a rough-and-ready effect, implying that his itinerary was haphazard, and that his encounters were primarily ones of chance. I suspect that a lot more planning went into the trip than Mosher suggests.
My favorite chapter was the one on "fresh starts," in which Mosher profiled people who had left one life for another. For Mosher, traveling through places both familiar and completely new was its own form of fresh start.

An example of literary art that engages the imagination!

Howard Frank Mosher is a gifted writer. His descriptions provoke the imagination into painting landscapes and portraits that the human eye ordinarily can't see. I found it literally impossible to put this book down, and I will definitely be reading the rest of Mosher's stories!

About the Author
James H. Overfield received his Ph.D. from Princeton University. He is Professor and Chair of History at the University of Vermont. In 1999 he received the University's outstanding teaching award. His publications include HUMANISM AND SCHOLASTICISM IN LATE MEDIEVAL GERMANY (Princeton University Press, 1984), as well as numerous articles published in such journals as Societas and Studies in Medieval and Renaissance History. He is also the author of SOURCES OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY GLOBAL HISTORY, published by Houghton Mifflin (2002).

so I'd say that it's definitely a good value. If you need this textbook

The covers of this textbook are a little beat up, but it's not too much of a problem for me, especially considering the fact that it's used. This book is still very usable and came at a relatively low price, so I'd say that it's definitely a good value. If you need this textbook, this is the place to buy it.

Average Quality for a Used Book

Arrived on time however the textbook that I received was very used. The previous owner basically colored every page with highlighter. I would order a less used book less time and maybe pay a little more because it is very distracting to read because it is so colored and drawn on.

It's a lot more damaged than I thought

The book itself isn't bad but you didn't mention that the original owner was an artist.
Has highlighted sides of the book which makes it look a lot older than it should be.
shipping time was reasonable.
