As in the first volume, Garfieldintroduces the younger reader to Shakespeare by a skilful weaving of phrases from the original into his re-telling. And the illustrations, particularly the color plates, really bring the whole thing to life

Shakespeare Stories
By lovely monsters
This is the second book in a series of Shakespeare stories for younger children. I have both books at my house that I keep for my Grandchildren to read and bought my Granddaughter both books for her own library when she was 10. It is a great way for the younger age child to be introduced to Shakespeare and helps the child's interest to want to read Shakespeare's plays when they get older. Enjoyable and reader-friendly to the younger reading set.

The authors try to conclude on some upbeat notes that ring hollow, but their science reveals much about the dark side of human nature.

Contradicting the common belief that chimpanzees in the wild are gentle creatures, Harvard anthropologist Wrangham and science writer Peterson have witnessed, since 1971, male African chimpanzees carry out rape, border raids, brutal beatings and warfare among rival territorial gangs. In a startling, beautifully written, riveting, provocative inquiry, they suggest that chimpanzee-like violence preceded and paved the way for human warfare?which would make modern humans the dazed survivors of a continuous, five-million-year habit of lethal aggression. They buttress their thesis with an examination of the ubiquitous rape among orangutans, gorilla infanticide and male-initiated violence and hyenas' territorial feuds, drawing parallels to the lethal raiding among the Yanomamo people of Brazil's Amazon forests and other so-called primitive tribes, as well as to modern "civilized" mass slaughter. In their analysis, patriotism ("stripped to its essence... male defense of the community") breeds aggression, yet, from an evolutionary standpoint, they reject the presumed inevitability of male violence and male dominance over women.

The authors consider ways to tame the demon, showing by contrast the altruism exhibited by the bonobo, or pygmy chimpanzee. The books was amazing it had me hooked from the opening pages. It gave valuable insight to what we are as humans and how violence is part of our inherent nature. I think using this research further evaluation is PSTD of all types should be looked at again.

This is not for evolutionary psychologists

Critiquing this book from the vantage point of evolutionary psychology is like a present day aeronautical engineer critiquing the feasibility of DaVinci's helicopter specs. This is a popular book that makes a very important speculation about the possible origins of human violence. None of the negative reviewers mention the important and politically impartial hypothesis put forward by the authors that ape communities with abundant resources are less violent than those with limited resources. Also, there is nothing wrong with the feminist community rallying around this book. This book isn't about taking away male power, it is about mitigating all violence.

This Book is Epic

This is among the best books I have read. I originally heard Wrangham on an NPR show discussing some facets of this book & quickly sought it out. It provides an excellent evolutionary background and discussions of humans' closest relatives- especially our closest, the chimpanzee and bonobo, whose life patterns are distinctly different from one another and provide some insight into human behavior and possibilities. The book is very well-written and highly readable regardless of a reader's background on the topic.
I had to write after reading some of the negative reviews and misinformation on the book- especially the first editorial review. The book is hardly as dark and disillusioning as it leads one to believe- quite the contrary. I finished the book a few months ago and am still pondering it. Highly recommended!

While the author offers some intriguing tidbits, the text is often oversimplified or vague ("Printed books enabled the Song to educate large numbers of students to govern China's enormous population"; "Aborigines believed that the activities of Rainbow Serpents and other Ancestral Beings created the plants, animals, rocks, and places of Australia"). Unfortunately, in Hunt's (Bestiary) double-page ink-and-watercolor art, many of the scenes seem just as generic as the writing, lacking the specificity of a narrative drama that might have given readers a more encompassing visual impression of the epoch and each locale. Like the text, Hunt's illustrations are not crowded with details but those he does choose to include are carefully, clearly depicted. Though the selection of stopovers has a Eurocentric slant, young armchair tourists will also get glimpses of South America's Chimu people, early Shona culture in Africa, southern India under the Chola Dynasty, and North America's Mississippian civilization, among others. This book does a fine job of introducing that information, beginning with a list of facts (population, language, etc.) and going on to survey what was happening in various parts of the world. Each two-page spread begins "1,000 years ago in . . ." and goes on to chronicle in a bar of text what was happening in civilizations in various parts of the world. Among the areas chronicled are the Americas, Central and Southern Europe, Northern Europe, England, China, India, the Middle East, Africa, and Australia. Although the information is cursory, it is intriguing enough to make students seek more. Most of the spreads are taken up by the art, which, though well executed, lacks a certain spirit. The pictures do, however, add a solid visual dimension to the historical developments. The last page updates the fact list initially presented. Kids will see there has been tremendous progress in some ways, but not all. Ilene Cooper

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

Odd plot, but good

We mostly like this book in my house. We bought it because Pretzel looks like Hundley from Curious George. The plot feels a little odd (Pretzel falls in love with another dog and desperately wants her to marry him; she doesn't want to), but I think that's just because it's 70+ years old and it's not what we're used to in our kids' books anymore. Still, it's cute and my son (3yo) likes it, so it's popular in our house.

We bought a dachshund 16 years ago, her name was Jasmine, and she grew up with our kids. Jasmine is no longer with us but our daughter and son-in-law bought two baby dachshunds to grow up with their baby boys. After reading this book I had to buy it for our grandkids to enjoy when they come to gramma and grampa's house.

Such a good story, especially since we have a dog who is half dachshund, and we call him pretzel dog when he curls up in his bed, and he has a long haired dachshund girlfriend down the street. I am also a long time Curious George fan (so much so I have a tattoo of him). This could not have been more perfect.
