In his first book for young readers, former high school teacher Severance uses simple, eloquent prose to limn Churchill and his times, offering edifying explanations of major events of 20th-century world history as well as of such arcane subjects as Britain's electoral process. While obviously filled with admiration for his subject, whom he has been studying for some 40 years, Severance doesn't lionize Churchill; his discussion of Churchill's shortcomings and controversial actions are as evenhanded as those of Churchill's many talents and notable achievements. A multitude of crisp black-and-white photographs enhance this handsomely designed volume; besides those of Churchill and his family are such arresting images as that of British schoolchildren huddled in a trench watching an air battle during World War II. The bons mots in "Winston's Wit," the concluding chapter, make a charming endpiece to a lively, informative book. Ages 10-up.

Grade 5 Up?This attractively packaged biography presents an affectionate portrait of Britain's renowned Prime Minister. Although Severance focuses on Churchill's contributions during World War II, he also describes the statesman's boyhood, Boer War adventures, and political ascendancy. Churchill's acumen in military affairs, remarkable leadership ability, and indomitable spirit create a heroic figure; however, his trenchant wit, giant ego, and affinity for cigars and brandy render him human. Severance is perfectly at ease with his subject, offering cogent quotations and anecdotes to support his assessments. The well-written text introduces readers to the times as well as the man. Good-quality black-and-white photographs, many of them full page, appear throughout. Other enhancements include a section of quotations called "Winston's Wit," a well-chosen bibliography, and a detailed index. While this volume lacks the wealth of primary-source material and the meticulous documentation of William W. Gr. 5^-8. Severance, who begins with an overview of Churchill's life and character, keeps to high ground in this biography, which sticks to facts and sidesteps gossip. That, plus Severance's relegation of Churchill's funnier comments to a separate section, "Winston's wit," makes for drier reading than necessary. Still, the information is well organized and clearly explained, a difficult task with so much world history to cover, and the author pays careful attention to Churchill's human side, showing the statesman's feelings as well as the reasoning behind some of his less popular decisions. The copious photographs also help bring Churchill to life. A bibliography of books by and about Churchill is included. Susan Dove Lempke

A Well-Written Book

Winston Churchill: Soldier, Statesman, Artist is a biography on one of the most influential men in the 20th century. I wasn't looking forward to reading this, as many biographies are often quite boring. This book, however, was very educational, easy to read, and a fun book. There are many facts that people often don't hear about Churchill (such as he came up with the idea for the tank) that are in this book. He was also a very funny man. The last section in this book is called Winston's Wit, an entire section on funny quotes and sayings by him.
If you're looking for a good, educational read on Winston Churchill, this is the book for you.

Winston Churchill: Soldier, Statesman, Artist, is an outstanding, and easy to read book for young adults. It is very detailed and not hard to follow along. It basically describes the entire life of Winston Churchill starting even before he was born. It is an amazing book, yet does get dry at points.

The book was informative and well written, although I had hoped for a little more meat for my middle schoolers; it would work well for 4th to 6th graders, however.

Even so, he searched the globe to find a colony for Belgium, frantic that the scramble of other European powers for overseas dominions in Africa and Asia would leave nothing for himself or his people. Wow, I'm never taking my tinfoil hat off now.

I was assigned this book for class and ended up greatly enjoying it! It kept my eyes open even when I wanted them closed. I'm still appalled at the events that occurred in the Congo and even the cover up behind it. Ask yourself this: Why have I never heard of this? Despite millions of people of dying, millions experiencing human brutality and sadistic mistreatment, lands ravaged for resources, and cultures disappearing, it is still swept under the rug. This book is a prime example of why we should keep curious and never take anything at face value. Wow, I'm never taking my tinfoil hat off now.

I recommend this book

I recommend this book. The only drawback was that there were frequent cases of interjecting suppositions about persons' motives, thinking or other non-provable details, but his writing style and the vast amount of historical detail were quite good. He includes the story of Stanley and Livingstone. I did not know Stanley had this large a roll in the whole unfortunate series of events in the colonialization of Africa. The historical events covered here were the basis for the plot line in the new movie Legend of Tarzan.

This a piece of history that colonial powers would like to stay hidden. The beginning is a little slow as it lays down back ground of the major characters. It eases into its purpose ; an expose of horror and slavery of the inhabitants of the Congo. The afterward, was the author speaking his opinion directly to the inhabitants of the major colonial powers that allowed it to happen. Excellent history and piece of writing. Coulman Trip Westcott

A reporter for the Wall Street Journal, Anders provides a series of horrifying case studies: a six-month-old baby who loses his hands and feet after a 42-mile journey to an HMO-approved emergency room; residents of a small town in Tennessee afflicted with an outbreak of a painful bowel infection who find that the drugs needed to suppress the epidemic are not covered; HMOs that select hospitals with low success rates for heart-bypass operations because of cost factors. Anders presents a powerful indictment of the emerging managed-care model for our national health-care system in this disturbing book.

Do HMOs deliver what they market? Wall Street Journal reporter Anders alerts the HMO subscriber to be on guard. Exposing faults with the intent of suggesting reforms, his book could become the energizing catalyst to bring them about, especially since corporations contracting HMOs for their employees have only recently begun to monitor the quality of care proffered by this largely self-regulated industry. For-profit HMOs spend on average 70%-75% of premiums on patient care, while nonprofit HMOs spend 90%. Anders publicizes the salaries of several for-profit CEOs: the chief executive of Foundation Health in 1994 had a $19 million pay package; Humana chair David Jones is one of the richest men in Kentucky. Not just statistics but also well-documented anecdotal evidence makes Anders's arguments alarming as he portrays life-threatening cost-cutting practices. Healthy patients have little cause for dissatisfaction with HMOs, stresses the author, but the elderly and those with medical emergencies or severe illnesses are generally treated on the cheap. Treating patients as production units flowing through a medical factory may be cost-effective, but Anders?he's insured by an HMO, his wife prefers traditional indemnity coverage?shows that quality controls have not been factored in. Around for a number of years, managed care is now receiving increased attention as larger numbers of people sign on with health maintenance organizations (HMOs). Anders, senior special writer for the Wall Street Journal, has penned this book for people trying to make informed choices about medical insurance. He opens with a chilling anecdote about an infant whose care was delayed by the family's HMO and, as a result, lost his hands and feet to amputation. Anders then proceeds to describe how HMOs have developed in this country and offers opinions on how managed care handles specific types of illness. The implication throughout is that managed care works best for healthy people who occasionally have routine illnesses but can fail those who have serious or chronic (i.e., costly) illnesses. Anders concludes with concrete suggestions to improve the system. Recommended for consumer health collections, which for balance should also include Alan G. Balanced, unflinching examination of the health care system.

As a journalist, not a health service provider, Mr. Anders brings credibility to his examination of our current health care system. His matter-of-fact style and even-handed presentation of the abuses of the traditional, fee for service model, the positive strengths of managed care, and the responsibility of the consumer in building a workable system further enhance his credibility. In this broad review of health care, Mr. Anders points out that the initial goal of managed care was to secure high quality, affordable, efficient health care by making sure patients received the right treatment by the right provider at the right time. He credits HMO's with redirecting medical priorities to preventive care away from costly, late-stage care. Mr. Anders discusses how the well-intended but inappropriate application of traditional business practices accidently created powerful loopholes and incentives for abuse, in part, because consumers and purchasers were naive about the great potential for unethical profiteering by managed care. The organization of the book makes the complicated issues in health care more understandable. Complex issues are discussed in separate chapters organized by topic areas such as emergency care, medicare and mental health care. Mr. Anders combines factual technical information with evocative personal testimonies from patients, providers, managed care executives and others. Mr. Anders' bottom line is that truly sick, vulnerable or atypical patients are poorly served by for-profit managed care. While Mr. Anders mainly focuses on the dark side of managed care, a great strength of the book is that he does not leave the reader feeling hopelesss or overwhelmed. In his final two chapters, he addresses quality and gives specific suggestions for building a balanced, better system. This easy read is an indispensible resource for those interested in promoting a health care system characterized by compassion, competence, and cost-effectiveness.

Marvin Perry, now retired, taught history at Baruch College, City University of New York. He has published several successful Cengage Learning texts, including WESTERN CIVILIZATION: IDEAS, POLITICS, AND SOCIETY (senior author and general editor); WESTERN CIVILIZATION: A BRIEF HISTORY; the leading Western Civilization reader, SOURCES OF THE WESTERN TRADITION; AN INTELLECTUAL HISTORY OF MODERN EUROPE; SOURCES OF EUROPEAN HISTORY SINCE 1900 (senior editor); HUMANITIES IN THE WESTERN TRADITION (senior author and general editor); and WORLD WAR II IN EUROPE: A CONCISE HISTORY. His scholarly work includes ARNOLD TOYNBEE AND THE WESTERN TRADITION (1996); coauthor of ANTISEMITISM: MYTH AND HATE FROM ANTIQUITY TO THE PRESENT (2002); coeditor of ANTISEMITIC MYTHS: A HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY ANTHOLOGY (2008); and coeditor of THE THEORY AND PRACTICE OF ISLAMIC TERRORISM: AN ANTHOLOGY (2008). J. Wayne Baker holds a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and taught in the history department of The University of Akron from 1968 until his retirement in 2000. From 1990 to 1999, he was director of the Humanities in the Western Tradition course at Akron. His scholarly research focuses on the works of Heinrich Bullinger and John Calvin. He has published two monographs and co-edited a book, as well as many journal articles and book reviews.

Pamela Pfeiffer Hollinger taught in the Humanities course at The University of Akron for over 18 years before moving into administration there.
