Awesome Book!!!

It took two years for me to write a review but it wasn't because the boook was horrilbe but, because I simply forgot. The book was in excellent condition!!! It was better than the book the school had given me!!! It was cheap and a great book and a great seller!!!! Thanks for the awesome book and it really saved money because the school wanted 200 dollars for it so thanks alot!!!!!

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

The story is not without moral, but I just feel uncomfortable reading it (hear me out)

I actually have a quite different view of the book. While I certainly see the merits of discussing issues and I really don't believe children take away from the book all that an adult would, I have to say that I feel uncomfortable reading this book to my four year old. I consider myself rather progressive. I live in the metro DC area and am mid-30's and have one 4 yo child. I guess since I haven't found the opportunity to discuss these issues with my daughter yet, I haven't felt it is something she can't grow up without (as others have suggested). Here are some of the reasons why:

* When talking to Aunt Eliza, Mother Bunny cries because her son Spotty is brown and not white and looks different than her other children. She is worried about what Grandpa might think. (My thought: who cares?)
* Little Rosie asked Aunt Eliza about her brown bunny brother named Spotty. "Don't you like brown spots, Auntie?" to which Eliza answers, "I certainly don't... go and play now."
* On two occasions, Mother Bunny tells Rosie to "stop asking questions" on a very important issue because it's a bad time for her-- first it's dinnertime, later it's bedtime). (My thought: nice.)
* Aunt Eliza advises Mother Bunny to leave Spotty home because he might upset Grandpa. She admonishes with, "you certainly don't intend to spoil the day for Grandpa and all the family."
* Mother Bunny gives in. The author writes, "So she had to go and tell Spotty that he was to stay home." (Huh? She HAD to...?) Mother Bunny told her little bunny, "It's just because of your brown spots... I'm so afraid that Grandpa may not like you as well as the others. I wish we could take you, Spotty, but we'll bring you something nice from the party." Rosie protests, but Mother says he'll have a "nice quiet day at home. Spotty could not say a word." (Yeah, I guess not.)
* The family leaves him behind and Spotty can't even eat his breakfast. He gets a chemical off of the shelf and tries to remove his spots to no avail. He then determines that it would be "easier for Mum" and for himself if he left his family and ran away from home. As he's walking, it begins to rain and he feels "tired," "lonesome," "scared" and "very sad."
* The book goes on and Spotty meets a family of brown bunnies that look just like him. They are called the Brown family. In this family, there is one isolated bunny that is "all white with pink eyes and a pink nose." Mr. Brown "lowered his voice" to explain to Spotty who the "strange looking" bunny is that is cowering in the corner. He further explains that Grandma "would be upset if she saw Whitie."

Yes, there are definitely merits and a moral to the story. I think that the book was written in a time that it was very important to discuss unspoken bigotry and unbased biases. But I think it's a sign of the times that I am (and I'd have to guess a few others might agree) that some of the elements of the book send the wrong signal. (Again, kids don't pick up major cues from stories. I totally get that... I think this is more about my discomfort in reading it.)

Merits/Morals:

They talk about the fact that Spotty is able to hide better and early on, Mother says that she loves Spotty for the way he is and Mr. Brown says that he has "always loved Whitie" and that "it all seems pretty foolish." Mother Bunny cries when she reads Spotty's note that said that he was running away and she and her family prepared to go out and look for little Spotty. And in the end, Mother Bunny says that she was "foolish" and she kissed Mr. Brown and then "everybody kissed everybody and everybody asked everybody's name and everybody laughed and danced and sang." I'm not saying the book is without merit. It just makes me squirm to read it and there are about a million other books with wonderful morals that I could read before this one.

Favorite book found again!

Growing up in the 50's, Spotty was my favorite book (even though I loved my dad's classic children's book, Little Toot, very much too). I have one dog-eared copy but wanted one(s) for my grandchildren. And I found it here!
I have spent a life trying to treat everyone the same and not put people into categories by their color, ethnic background, their economic status ... and guess what??? I now realize that I absorbed these values from reading Spotty as a young girl! It tells so gently what it feels like to be a spotted bunny in a family of white bunnies (and ostracized) and how it feels like to be a white bunny in a family of spotted bunnies (also made to feel "different").
Do your kids and grandkids a real life-long favor by reading this enjoyable, heart-warming, positive book to them. It changed my life and could change theirs.

Daughter loves it!

My daughter, age 4, just loves this book. It is a paragraph book, not a one-liner read-aloud, and adults will find it enjoyable to read to children. The basic story is that Spotty has spots while his siblings don't. He gets left behind, runs away (which I usually don't like to see in stories, but I just correct verbally to express the dangers of and move on), and gets taken in by a family of spotted bunnies who have ostracized their plain bunny just the same as he was an outcast in his family! So, of course, eventually all the bunnies get together and learn that the spots and colors don't really matter and that it's more important to be kind and loving... all told in the warm medium of adorable bunnies which any child would love. It's rather hard to find these days, but worth buying!

Great Teaching Resource

I've been teaching Hamlet for 15 years. I picked up this book about 8 or so years ago. I love it. Each left-hand page has an explanation of difficult or archaic words or phrases that appear on the right-hand page. This has really helped my students not be quite as intimidated. It's been great addition to my teaching resources.

Better than No Fear Shakespeare!

I love this book! The explanations on the separate page are so incredibly helpful! I hate the way that No Fear Shakespeare just rewrites the text, and this book just explains what is or might be confusing. Great price and great book!

Very pleased-more than just spelling here!

I really like this book. Let it be said that I do not think the words are the most challenging lists for 5th graders, but do not make the same mistake I made at first. At first glance I thought the book just missed the mark, but this is not the case. The lists focus on a spelling concept (short vowels, vowel combinations for one sound, etc.). There are challenge words each week as well. The thing I like about this book is that it is comprehensive, teaching how to use (and including its own) glossary and thesaurus, providing lists of Latin roots and affixes and their meanings. Proofreading also begins to be taught in the lessons. There are enough lessons to do one a day each week; and really, you don't need the hardcover book at all. I'm really happy with the book so far and my daughter is as well.

A new home for a great book

I had this book in board format and used it for preschool Spanish to spot the spider in different scenes. The illustrations are the real storytellers for preschoolers and this book does the job. So glad to find it in big book. It had been used for early decoding and there was evidence the teacher had done a phenomenal job. Book was used but in great shape. Happy to give it a new home :-)

Greenfeld ( Marc Chagall ) has a rare ability to focus on a very emotional topic and to convey that emotion to readers. Here he presents the stories of Jews who, as children, survived the Holocaust in hiding. Some posed as children of non-Jewish families, others were sheltered in religious institutions or orphanages, still others spent years in airless bunkers or attics. Some lived in constant fear, moving from place to place; others did not realize they were in danger and spent the war in relative peace. A few were resented and even betrayed by those who hid them; luckier children were welcomed as part of the family. Incorporating his subjects' testimonies into succinct accounts of individual survival, Greenfeld produces a well-rounded and varied picture of their collective experiences, from the first stirrings of war through their liberation and beyond. The volume's design intensifies the impact of the stories: contemporaneous photos of the subjects, distributed throughout the text, put faces with the words. This moving, thoughtful approach to the study of the Holocaust will help young readers grasp the horrors endured in those years by people their own age. Ages 8-up.

Grade 4 Up-The experiences of 15 children who survived the Holocaust in hiding are presented here within the historical context of the Nazi rise to power and World War II. These youngsters were sheltered in a variety of private homes and institutions by "righteous Gentiles," family friends, and those simply looking for additional money; some were resented, some treated compassionately, and others mistreated and abused physically. Greenfeld has interviewed these survivors, who are now living in the U.S., and has recorded their memories. Both the mundane and the unusual are remembered; the most commonly described feelings are the fear that family members would perish and the sense of guilt at having survived while others did not. There are reminiscences of narrow escapes and poignant remembered pleasures of edible treats. While the chronological arrangement of the book makes it difficult to follow a specific child's story (it is possible by using the excellent index), it succeeds admirably in allowing readers to place the experiences described within the framework of the Holocaust. An excellent selection of black-and-white photographs and an open design contribute to making this an important and accessible resource.

Gr. 5-10. "I remember all the time being told to be quiet, the Germans will get you." In order to live, Jewish children had to go into hiding from the Nazis during the Second World War. Greenfeld has spoken to survivors now living in the U.S., and he weaves pieces of their painful personal narratives with a general account of what it was like to be a Jewish child at that time. Like Anne Frank, many were hidden by Righteous Gentiles, who often risked their own lives. Like the children in Vos' Hide and Seek (1991) and Anna Is Still Here (1993), they had to lie, to be always on guard. The individual voices are intense and quiet. They speak of hunger, cold, terror, and loneliness. They remember suddenly being ashamed of themselves. Boys had to hide that they were circumcised. These children witnessed courage and also horror, such as the father who had to strangle his screaming baby to save the others in hiding. They're honest about their difficult readjustment after the war ("My mother was in such bad shape . . . she had no teethÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20.ÿ20I couldn't stand being near her"). They will always feel guilty for having survived while others died. The slightly oversize book, printed on a fine vellum stock, is artistically designed, with clear type and wide margins, and the personal narratives are set off in italics, with occasional small black-and-white family snapshots that frame moments of ordinary life. A Moving Account

I just finished another book about the Holocaust that mentioned children being smuggled out of the Warsaw ghetto in backpacks and I wanted to hear more stories about how children survived the Holocaust.

This book is considered juvenile non-fiction but the information is the same regardless of the reader's age. Howard Greenfeld does a very good job organizing the stories of children who were hidden during the Holocaust. He includes their stories in their own words as well as photographs of the survivors.

A moving collection regardless of the reader's age.

A must read book.

I bought this book for my son, Jefferson, who is 9 years old. When I looked through it, I started reading it, and just couldn't put it down. It is a wonderful book, of hardships like we have never known before, and survival of a wonderful religion and people. We are not Jewish, but I enjoyed this book immensely, and will be reading other books by this author. This book is great for adults, really makes one appreciate all that we have in this country; freedom first and foremost. For children, it is a great book to teach about hardships and compassion for others, as well as understanding history and the second world war. A DEFINITE 5 stars from me.
