According to noted psychologist Seligman (Learned Optimism), 30% of American children suffer from depression. Further, his studies demonstrate that "pessimistic children are at much higher risk for becoming depressed than optimistic children." Seligman discounts prevalent theory that children who are encouraged by others to feel good about themselves will do well. About the Author
Martin E. P. Seligman, Ph.D., is a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is the author of several books, including Learned Optimism and Authentic Happiness. He is past president of the American Psychological Association as well as the division of clinical psychology of the American Psychological Association, and former director of clinical training in psychology at the University of Pennsylvania.

A great resource and inspiration, but potentially now superseded by other parenting books.

This was my entry book into the big world of positive psychology, and it remains a firm favourite. I first read it many years before I had children. I love the research he discusses, the basic course in cognitive behavioural therapy that is contained within - for both parent and child, and the way he writes.

BUT I have a number of friends who found his writing supercilious and the book hard going. I think there are other books that are probably easier to implement for parents - the whole brain child, Siegel and how to talk so kids will listen ... Faber

I think this book explicitly asks parents to assess themselves in a way that is confronting (something I love), so I can see why this hits nerves.

I think if you are truly interested in preventing depression in your children, this is a must read. I would probably like a bit more about teaching empathy included within the book, and I would love further follow up on the Geelong Grammar PPP results in the next edition.

Law professors Lawrence and Matsuda (Where Is Your Body, and Other Essays, LJ 12/96), a husband-and-wife team, have written a most provocative defense of affirmative action. Until now, much of the current debate has been fueled by conservative scholars of color opposed to affirmative action, such as Dinesh D'Souza (The End of Racism, Free Pr., 1995), Stephen Carter (Reflections of an Affirmative Action Baby, LJ 9/15/91), and Shelby Steele (The Content of Our Character, LJ 8/90). The present work begins with the historical development of affirmative action in the 1960s. For Lawrence and Matsuda, this history is still fresh: while people of color have made some statistical gains in employment and education, they are still locked out of boardrooms, classrooms, and many types of jobs. Affirmative action is necessary, they argue, because America's race and gender divide has not yet healed. As law professors, they analyze affirmative action policy from its turbulent beginning to the current challenges. As they point out in the preface, "a black man and an Asian women sometimes see things differently," yet their collective insight on the issue is the strength of their book. Each chapter includes narratives from beneficiaries of affirmative action along with the authors' personal experiences. The authors look at the debate related to color blindness, meritocracy, feminism, and class. Lawrence and Matsuda have done an excellent job of presenting the facts and have added a humanistic angle that allows one to explore the impact of the policy in the U.S. The book puts forth a strong case that as a society we should not want to regress to a time when such a policy was necessary to provide the liberty and justice a democracy promises. Responding to the current wave of affirmative-action backlash, two Georgetown law professors, each proud beneficiaries of the policy, stand as zealous advocates brooking no retreat. ``Our parents taught us that . . . the struggle to make a place at the table for ourselves was also the struggle to free the souls of those who would exclude us,'' write Lawrence (who is African-American) and Matsuda (Japanese-American) of their individual family legacies of political idealism and civil rights activism. The two authors--colleagues who are also married to each other--here form a tireless tag team to continue the relay. They alternate in writing 11 complementary essays that argue for muscular affirmative-action programs as the best tool to end the residual racial, gender, and economic subordination running through our society. As legal scholars, each is a leading proponent of an analytical perspective known as critical race theory, which documents how race, gender, and socioeconomic status shape our social and legal system, as well as our varied individual experiences navigating that system. not up to par...but good nonetheless.

i guess B-Boys Blues has spoiled me. it was sexy, funny, exhilarating, sexy, sexy....did i mention sexy!? but not only that, it had a certain appeal to it that If Only for ONe Nite did not capture. i'll admit, the whole time i was reading this, i kept thinking, 'God, this coach is committing a major crime here!' Not only that, but it was hard for me to relate to the younger lil' bit (i'll always call him that). He seemed to be thinking on the same level as his 'older self', only he was in high school.
I don't know, the whole story was just sorta unbelievable. and, God, this coach was committing a major crime....did i mention that already!?
If you've read B-Boys and you buy this, you WILL read the entire book because you'll be waiting for something, ANYTHING to hit you the way Pooqie and lil' Bit did...but in my humble opinion, you won't find it.

I am sure Mr Hardy has an audience for his book, and it certainly isnt me. It was too shallow, I finished reading it because I am a book addict and finish reading everything I start.. otherwise... it was kind of just there. Did not explore the deeper aspects of a younger person, older person relationship, and its role in what he calls "HIT"..... learnt very little from... just proved to me that the whole age and mental factor plays and preys a big role in both dating worlds... same gender loving relationships and hetero-relationships...
Sort of glad that Mitchell got a chance to resolve that disfunctional relationship... a lot of folks dont get a chance to do so... it could have been an otherwise deep and moving story if only JEH dug a little deeper with the issues he was attempting to tackle.....
If you are a non-reader, love simplistic stories, then this is the book for you.... if you are richer reader and like this genre of writing then do the first two of E. Lynn Harris' books....... the rest is meadiocre.... presented as literature.

Very enlightening!

I really can't understand why this book has come out in paperback edition, so that more people might read it. I read it when it first came out and made me do a lot of thinking not just about affirmative action, but more about just how does any society go about providing ways to bring about real opportunities for various groups of people to access to good education and employment in the midst of adverse social, economic, and political conditions.
The author's chapter "On Meritocracy" was especially insightful. It talks about the need for a "community-based" definition of qualified, rather than an elitist-based definition. This means that when we talk about a community-based definition, we're not looking at just a person's educational credentials, but her ability to contribute to the community in which she will be working. Does her background or experience with that community mean more than her scores on educational tests or her access to priviledged edcuation.
In this regard, the authors write that, "Historically, the demand for affirmative action came from communities with unmet needs. Ghettos, left without basic services because of white flight, needed doctors, lawyers, merchants, and teachers who were unafraid to serve there. Ethnic communities found that, without community-based scholars, their history, their culture was ignored or misinterpreted by outsiders..." Without affirmative action, what we get are people who qualified based on certain instutional credentials, but they lack real talent or history with the communities they serve.
It's really too bad that affirmative action debate has subsided, for it really helps us to grapple with how we build an equitable society where people are not held back because of their lack of previlege or because their racial, economic, or social background.

Darwin's Athletes zeroes in on our society's fixation on black athletic achievement. John Hoberman compellingly argues that this obsession - one shared by both blacks and whites in the media, in corporate America, and even by athletes themselves - has come to play a disastrous role in African-American life and a troubling role in our country's race relations. The sports fixation originates in the painful century-long exclusion of blacks from every other path to high achievement. The scarcity of other kinds of "race heroes" has conferred messianic status on the most popular black athletes, fostering a delusion of integration while contributing to deep social divisions. Ironically, Hoberman argues, the decline of European empires and the rise of the black athlete helped to preserve rather than undermine the inferior status of nonwhites.

Good book however, I think the author tends to stray from the topic he focuses on and the book can drag at times. I'd say the book starts well and ends well but the middle is a bit unfocused.

Mandatory Reading on the Racial Issue

Hoberman has written a masterful account of not just racism in sport but in general, from the social, biological, cultural, political and international perspective. He makes convincing arguments that sport, rather than being the great equaliser between the races, actually has retarded black social advancement by creating an acceptable alternative to white intellectual achievement. Indeed, a plague currently afflicting black education makes any black scholastic accomplishments of the non-physical variety "white" and therefore nerdy and uncool. The imagery of Michael Jordan seduces young blacks, most of whom have no chance of ever attaining professional athletic status, into abandoning academic study for the glamor, girls and glory associated with sport. Hoberman shows how whites, who originally denigrated blacks as being lazy and shiftless, have come to regard them as athletic supermen, against which no white man would be able to legitimately compete. More insidiously, many blacks are all too willing to accept that their natural athletic genius exempts them form having to compete with whites in the intellectual sphere. The pride shown with the black athletes that have overcome white racism, such as Joe Louis, Jackie Robinson and Muhammad Ali, winds up hurting the overall black goal of full social integration when it serves to be the end-all-and-be-all of the black experience in America. Hoberman also makes the point that blacks achieving wealth and fame in sport still are prisoners in a gilded cage created for the profit and entertainment of the white power structure. Without taking the same level of pride in intellectual, artistic and political prowess as with sports, blacks will continue to function on the margins of white controlled society. His observations with respect to shibboleths about racial biology and superiority are scathing indictments of the perpetuation of mythology that justifies this or that racist neurosis. Indeed, it still pervades the racial discussion, and even affects the way blacks see themselves. The invidious process of the physicalization of the black man started with slavery and continued into athletics, so that even if blacks showed superior speed or strength, they were always criticized by whites for their lack of intelligence, courage or endurance. Those lies were made manifest with the likes of Muhammad Ali, black soldiers in both world wars, African distance runners and intellectuals like DuBois, but the mindset did not change. Only until very recently have black quarterbacks in the NFL been seen as capable of doing the same job as white QBs, after years of "common" knowledge that black QBs didn't have the mental chops as whites. Sadly, it seems like sports is the only forum that blacks acknowledge they can compete with the white man. It appears only some brave black women have the courage to criticize the obsession with black prowess, which even among black intellectuals is revered and used as standards by which black achievement is measured. Charles Barkeley, he of large frame and larger mouth, is an outspoken critic of the undue emphasis that sports has in the black community, but of course we pay attention to him because he is a famous wealthy athlete, not because he is a man of letters or scientific achievement. Hoberman's book is sobering, thought provoking and only racists of either color would condemn him for his exemplary tome, that should be required reading in high schools throughout the nation. Alas, because he does skewer the black community with the painful truth, his whiteness will be used against him. Diogenes, come hither and shine your light on Hoberman. Diogenes, of course, is incapable of adjudging his color.

excellent outside perspective on the Black potential problem

Well written and excellently presented book on the problematic of Black male Americans fixated in only sports. Author presents a solid case yet puts in his own perspective on why Blacks are not excelling at anything else but sports. I havent finished it but this is a keeper.

The Challenge of Objectiveness

If one is looking for a book laced with opinion stated as fact from a clearly liberal viewpoint, then this is just that book. There is no shortage of broad sweeping statements that begin with such phrases as: "Everyone agrees that..." or "No one would argue... ." The author is truly a master of non-critical thinking. One only needs to scan the pictures and read their captions to see the bias reinforced by the text. An unsolicited cartoon or two adds that extra twist. The bias doesn't stop there however. If one is hoping to get "just the facts, ma'am," this book is not the place to look. Even the portrayal of the facts has a slant. The aspects of American government that do not support the author's bias often are relegated to "et cetera" status. The 2nd Amendment is a good example. In my unveiled opinion, it is a shame that this book is a required text for some college level political science courses. The reader would be better served if the author explained how his 1st amendment rights take away the student's right to choose whether or not to support his agenda.

Demonstrating the same keen passion for his subject as in his Art Attack, Aronson examines the life of a contradictory and complex Elizabethan figure, both poet and soldier. As in the best of biographies, the author expands his narrative beyond the details of a single life to draw a nuanced and compelling portrait of the times in which he lived. Aronson sets the stage with a preface describing the many, often conflicting symbolic meanings that the quest for El Dorado, the fabled South American city of gold, held for early modern Europeans. He deftly intersperses a chronological account of the often paradoxical details of Ralegh's life with the tumultuous changes taking place in early modern Europe. In this way Aronson provides a cultural context for a man who could write love sonnets to his queen and also mount bloody battles against the Irish. He makes no excuses for Ralegh, but vividly paints the rise of a gentleman farmer's son, with no real connections, to a court favorite. In another irony, because Ralegh was favored by the queen, she granted him a "patent" to stake claims in the New World yet he himself did not set sail: "Ralegh remained near money and power, while his men sailed off the edges of the map." Both fascinating and daunting, the account may be challenging for those with little prior knowledge of the period; however, the exceedingly well researched archival maps and prints, time line, "Cast of Characters" and extensive endnotes and bibliography will help budding historians get their bearings. Aronson's portrait of "the first modern man" is both provocative and tantalizing, revealing his subject as a person of canny wit and magnetism with all-too-human shortcomings. Age 11-up. (May)

Grade 7 Up-A welcome book on an important historical figure in European and North American history. Scholars now agree on the spelling of the man's name as "Ralegh," so beware of possible confusion. Sir Walter led an active, ambitious, and sometimes acrimonious life. From humble beginnings to the court of Elizabeth I (who appropriately is a primary figure in the book with much insight given to her as a person and as a ruler), Sir Walter played a role in the social, political, and cultural worlds of his time. Aronson begins with an impressive cast of characters that demonstrates the vast influence of his subject: royalty, New World chiefs, conquistadors, and famous writers, all of whom are blended together to tell this complex, interesting, well-written, and readable story. While it is doubtful that Ralegh actually threw his cape down to prevent Elizabeth from stepping in a puddle, he did introduce potatoes to Ireland. The many elements of the man's personality are explored in a well-rounded and fair manner, with several examples of his own writings-from poetry to a suicide note-interspersed throughout. The quest for El Dorado has a recurring role here, just as it did in Ralegh's life, but despite the title, it is not necessarily the main thrust of the book. Well illustrated with black-and-white prints and original maps, and including thorough endnotes and a great comparative time line, this book is exemplary nonfiction and pure gold for libraries.

Ambitious, brave, calculating, romantic, all these adjectives and many more describe Sir Walter Ralegh (his own spelling), the English explorer who forged a place for his country in the New World. This is much more than just a traditional biography. It's a portrait of the Elizabethan age, when the metaphor of exploration made its way into politics, literature, and even religion. The book chronicles Ralegh's rise from his country-bumpkin origins to Elizabeth's courtier and goes on to describe how his ambition pointed him toward the New World. It also reveals much about the intrigue at Queen Elizabeth's court, as well as the motives and machinations of those living in the Americas. The search for El Dorado, in the literal sense as a quest for gold and in the larger vision of a New Eden, weaves itself throughout the story; its treasure hunt aspects will be what grab many readers. The book's length may deter, and with such a wide range of topics, the transitions are occasionally disjointed. But the book is beautifully researched, and it is written with wit and passion. The many black-and-white reproductions of portraits and maps add to the handsome design. Sweeping, multilayered nonfiction. Notes and a time line are appended. Ilene Cooper

Outstanding look at a fascinating individual

Sir Walter Ralegh (the way he spelled it) was so much more than a promoter of tobacco--although he certainly did promote tobacco. He was so much more than a man who lay down his cloak so Queen Elizabeth I would not get her feet wet--a story which may or may not be true. He was a man from a poor background who rose almost as high as one could in Elizabethan England--and then fell about as low. Stunningly researched, brilliantly written, full of fascinating facts (did you know there were no maps of England that showed ROADS until the 1590s), this is young adult writing at its finest.

an excellent introduction to the ugly but fascinating world of politics

This book reads like an entertaining adventure novel but it is so much more. The court intrigues of Elizabethan England and not so different from the politics of today, both in government and corporations. The author has made a lifelong study of Sir Walter Ralegh and his passion shows. Great Biography of Sir Walter Ralegh

This is such an insightful biography of Sir Walter Ralegh's life which consisted of pleasing Queen Elizabeth I, trying to gain power and money, and then ending his life trying to find the mythological golden city, El Dorado. The author used the preface to introduce and inform the reader what El Dorado meant to the early modern Europeans. He also included maps, prints, and timelines, which gives the reader a more broad and easy to read interpretation of his life. The author also includes Ralegh own writing from poetry to even a suicide note. There is a lot of research in this well put together biography. Along with all of this great information, the author includes a picture of six foot tall Sir Walter. This biography is obviously written to inform the reader of the history of Sir Walter Ralegh, and give a little inside of how the world worked back in the day. This book is recommended to ages 11 and up.

In another wondrous, wordless picture book by Caldecott Medal winner David Wiesner (Tuesday and June 29, 1999), a class visiting the Empire State Building finds complete cloud cover and no visibility. One boy makes friends with a cloud (identifiable in the mists by the red mittens, hat, and scarf and swipes from the boy), and goes AWOL on a wonderful adventure. The cloud whisks him away to the "Sector 7" floating cloud factory, a bizarre sky station that looks like a Victorian design for a submarine.

Hiding behind his new cumulonimbus friend, the boy enters an area resembling Grand Central Station (complete with "Arrivals" and "Departures" boards) and watches officious human types in uniform giving the clouds their weather assignments. When the clouds complain to the boy that their assigned shapes are boring, he, a talented artist, creates new blueprints for them. The stuffy grownups are furious when clouds start emerging in the shape of fantastic fish; they shout at the clouds, tear up the new designs, and escort the boy back to his school group. But the revolt of the clouds is unstoppable now, and in the last few pages the skies over Manhattan suddenly get a lot more interesting. (Click to see a sample spread. Caldecott Medalist Wiesner (Tuesday) again takes to the air, with watercolors that render words superfluous. Here, a boy on a class trip to the Empire State Building discovers that the landmark, enveloped by fog, is nonetheless a gateway to incredible vistas indeed. The boy is soon befriended by a jolly cloud that whisks him off to a sort of Grand Central in the sky, which functions as headquarters for clouds in the metro areaASector 7. Giant tubes funnel the clouds in and out of a designated waiting area; boards overhead track arrivals and departures (e.g., "Altocumulus" Dep. 1:03, Tube 21W). Uniformed bureaucrats keep their eyes on the skies in various locations (Hoboken, Brooklyn, Manhattan, etc.) by means of TV-type monitors, and issue each departing cloud an architectural-type drawing with precisely delineated shapes and measurements to which it must conform. The complex is rendered with the hard edges and clear definition of ultra-realism, a style that serves as an effective foil for both the wispy clouds and the story's fantastical premise. Magnificent as the "Cloud Dispatch Center" is, it is only the beginning. For the boy, having discerned the clouds' dissatisfaction with their pedestrian assignments, alters the drawings and specs so that the clouds begin to transform into blowfish, angel fish and octopus shapes. Even after the unamused bureaucrats discover his creations and summarily return him by cloud taxi to his classmates, the boy's influence persists: an elaborate tropical-sea-in-the-sky astonishes his friends (and strangers on the street), draws fish to the surface of the river, and has the city's indoors cats pawing at their windowpanes in excitement. Starting from a simple, almost obvious ideaAonce one has thought of itAWiesner offers up an ingenious world of nearly unlimited possibilities. His paintings, at once highly playful and purely pristine, contain such a wealth of details that they reveal new discoveries even after repeated examinations. The frame-within-a-frame that depicts the boy's first glimpse of the Sector 7 complex, for instance, is a mesmerizing study of the variegated colors and textures of clouds. The work as a whole is an inspired embodiment of what seems to be this artist's approach to story and vision: the more you look, the more there is to see. Ages 5-up.

Grade 1-4-Wiesner's fans will be on Cloud 9 with this wordless scenario of a class trip to the Empire State Building. An initial visual clue of the drama is a fullpage illustration before the title page of a boy drawing sea creatures on the frosted windowpane of a school bus. On the top observation deck amid hovering clouds, the boy's red scarf and hat are spirited off and onto a white, puffy cloud figure (whose face is a cross between Little Toot and Casper the Ghost). The boy's new cloud pal transports him to Sector 7 and the Cloud Dispatch Center, where, akin to a train station, arrivals and departures are scheduled. The boy is introduced to other cloud forms and learns how they are shaped and channeled across the country as designated by individual blueprints. When the artistic youngster draws fanciful fish and the clouds assume their shapes, the dispatchers are shocked and ban the boy from the sector. His cloud pal returns him to the class outing, where he floats off the elevator onto the school bus. The climatic finish amuses and puzzles everyone in the story and will delight readers. The artist's fascination with floating and flying escapades is as free spirited and frolicsome as in his Tuesday (Clarion, 1991), Free Fall (Lothrop, 1988), and June 29, 1999 (Clarion, 1992). The framed panels have a cinematic quality that sweeps readers off into the clouds along with the boy. This wittily depicted stretch of the imagination displays Wiesner's talent in top form.

Illustrations were wonderful, however I needed a narrative to go with the Artist work, Our grandson just came out of a Montesorri School, and has started to read.........I wanted to help him identify new words with the sounds, using the art work and narrative, had to send it back.

Wonderful

Huge David Wiesner fan. This book is no exception. I teach junior high and I use David Wiesner books to have the kids write stories from the pictures. This is a great one.

About the Author
Skip Downing is an international consultant in the field of faculty development and student success strategies. Dr. Downing has earned degrees from Princeton University, Johns Hopkins University, the University of Santa Monica, and Carnegie Mellon University. He holds advanced degrees in both English and counseling psychology. He was professor of English at Baltimore City Community College (BCCC) for 32 years. In addition to his role as an academic instructor, Dr. Downing created and coordinated BCCC's Student Success and Learning Community Programs. These programs teach students how to apply proven success strategies to achieve their full potential in college and in life. The College Success Program resulted in a significant increase in both student academic success and retention. Dr. Downing has made numerous presentations at national conferences and conducted faculty development workshops at many two- and four-year colleges and universities in the United States, Canada, Bermuda, and the Virgin Islands. Dr. Downing's teaching, writing, and consulting are all guided by his belief that the greatest mission of any educational institution is to empower its students to live rich, fulfilling lives. Since 1996, he has facilitated the On Course Workshops, intensive four-day retreats for college educators focusing on proven strategies for helping students become active, responsible partners in their education and achieve greater success in college and in life.

Best book I've read on how to succeed in college and life!

As an educator, this is the book I wish I had written. The author is a great coach, persuasively urging readers to make wise choices that will change the outcome of their lives both in college and in life. I highly recommend this book to teachers and students alike.

You have got to be kidding me!

Maybe it was because the book was a required text for an English class, and I thought that inappropriate, but I really did not like this book. Maybe it is because I am not a person who is able to have a serious conversation with my inner critic and then analyze the listening style of that that imaginary voice. I went into the course with an open mind, but after so many patronizing Dr.Phil-after-a-ripping-bong-hit style Journey Entry assignments, I was tired of having my time wasted. (The margins contain many Oprah quotes, so if you are a fan, dig in.) If you need a therapist, get a therapist. If you must have a book to help you succeed in life, try Seven Habits by Covey.

I found the book to be an excellent reference source and guide to creating independence, self-reliance and encouraging critical thinking in students (and staff). I especially appreciate the 'practical' approach taken by the author and the use of plain English which makes it very easy to follow and understand the various strategies and concepts the author proposes.
