Many Civil War buffs have called the battle of Chancellorsville Robert E. Lee's greatest victory; Stephen W. Sears doesn't necessarily agree, and in this painstakingly researched book, he offers ample evidence that Lee had luck on his side in the battle. Lee was a great general all right, and his men did fight savagely. But the notion that Union General Joseph Hooker was inept is cast into doubt by Sears, who describes the action of Chancellorsville as most great battle books do--hour by hour. This book is the finest rendition of the battle yet and an interesting thesis for Civil War discussion. Lee's penchant for aggressiveness and his faith in his troops as unbeatable may have worked at Chancellorsville, but Sears argues that these alone couldn't win the war. Lee learned this lesson too, a month later at Gettysburg.

Chancellorsville was one of the Civil War's pivotal campaigns, a great victory for the South that, however, led directly to the death of top Confederate general Stonewall Jackson. It hasn't generated the amount of literature devoted to most major Civil War battles, largely because John Bigelow's 1910 classic, The Campaign of Chancellorsville, seemed for years to offer the last word. But Sears, employing a mix of published and unpublished primary accounts to buttress secondary studies, manages to offer more than one new word in a thoroughly engaging text. Most notable is his use of Union military intelligence reports to show how General Joseph Hooker was fed a stream of accurate information about Robert E. Lee's troops; conversely, Sears points out the battlefield communications failures that hampered the Union army at critical times. He also examines the roles of Hooker and his corps commanders, finding that half of the latter badly served their commander in the campaign. On the Confederate side, Sears analyzes Lee's faulty intelligence and his relationships with his subordinates. Throughout, he highlights Lee's marvelous good luck, as well as his army's fighting capability. One of the book's three appendices explores several of the battle's "romances"?e.g., Jackson's wounding, Alfred Pleasonton's false stories?while two other appendices present orders of battle and casualties. Sears's almost hour-by-hour account of soldiers under fire will confuse some, but close readers will find a stunning analysis of how terrain, personality, chance, and other factors affect fighting and distort strategic design. Sears offers new information on the "modern" intelligence gathering of the Union Army, refutes many old "romances" of Chancellorsville, especially the one that Hooker lost his nerve, and adds vital details to both commanders and battle movements. He also shows that Hooker, more than McClellan, made the Army of the Potomac into "the finest army on the planet"?one that survived bad generalship and Robert E. Lee's aggressive moves at Chancellorsville. Sears also reminds us that "character" and "will" count for much in war. NO. The book was NOT as I thought it would be. I thought the listing said it had a dust jacket, which it didn't, and then it was a crappy, discarded old library copy with sticky tags on the cover. VERY disappointed in it.

A real treat for Civil War enthusiasts

Stephen Sears has earned a reputation as one of the top Civil War authors today and with Chancellorsville he once again shows why with what could be his best book so far. First off, Sears is just a great writer. To many Civil War books are written by authors who know the subject and have done all the right research but simply don't have the writing talents to put the information into a form that is both informative and entertaining. That is not the case with Sears. His writing skills are equel to his research and the result is a book that is both informative and a pleasure to read.
To say this book is about the Battle of Chancellorsville is almost a misnomer. A better description would be that the book is about the Hooker era in the Army of the Potomac. In the book Sears treats us to more than just the Xs and Os of a battle. We hear about Hooker's rebuilding of the Army's moral after the disasterous tenure of Burnside. We learn about army intelligence, how both armies are supplied and how troops passed the winter months. All before we get anywhere close to Chancellorsville. The book does a wonderful job of covering the situation of both the Army of the Potomac and Army of Northern Virginia in the early days of 1863.
As far as the battle goes, the book gives a very complete description. From the opening moves to the death of Jackson, the reader really gets a full and complete picture. This is aided by Sears' inclusion of some very good maps, something that is often missing from Civil War books.
I can think of few Civil War books that I have enjoyed as much as this. The book is 600 pages but Sears is such a good writer that you breeze right through it. Sears has done a lot of good books but for me this could be his best.

Good concise definitions

This dictionary will help intermediate ESL learners tremendously. It offers brief but precise definitions of important words. The only drawback is the pronunciation key. It uses typical American pronunciation keys, and students who are used to international phonetic alphabets might find it difficult to figure out how to pronounce new words.

The American Heritage English as a Second Language , 1998 edition, is a good dictionary for Learners of English as a Second Language ( ESL ).

It gives access to pronunciation, it gives clear definitions with basic words, it gives phrase and sentence examples for using the word and it also provides information on homonyms or words that sound the same but with different spelling (such as " wrote " and " rote ") and meaning. All necessary features for a second
language learner dictionary.

What it lacks :

we are in 2010 , a 1998 edition needs updates to accommodate all the new scientific and technological events ( ipods, social medias, netbooks, etc)and socio-political events ( taliban, ax of evil, niqab ).

more photos and drawings on top of a plain description for words such as " corn flakes : a crisp, flaky, cold cereal prepared from coarse cornmeal " ; a photo would help a lot.

But, with all these and other imperfections, it remains a solid and effective tool to learn and master American English for foreigners.

About the Author
John B. Taylor, a highly regarded and widely honored figure, has earned numerous awards for both teaching and leadership in International Finance. Dr. Taylor is currently the Raymond Professor of Economics at Stanford University, where he has received the Hoagland Prize for excellence in undergraduate teaching and Rhodes Prize for teaching introductory economics. Dr. Taylor was founding Director of the innovative Stanford Introductory Economics Center and has served as Director of the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research. Since 1976, Dr. Taylor has worked in numerous government economic advisory roles. From 2001 to 2005, Dr. Taylor served as Undersecretary of Treasury for International Affairs, where he developed and implemented U.S. international financial policy, including currencies; trade in financial services; foreign investment, international debt; and reform of the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, and other international financial institutions. Dr. Taylor was awarded the Medal of the Republic of Uruguay for his work in resolving the 2002 financial crisis. He was awarded the Treasury Distinguished Service Award for designing and implementing the financial reconstruction plan in Iraq and was awarded the Alexander Hamilton Award for his leadership in international finance. His accomplishments include helping to assemble an international coalition to freeze terrorist assets, expediting Afghanistan's economic reconstruction, creating a new currency and central bank in Iraq, forging an international agreement to reduce Iraq's debt by 80 percent, and creating a new economic engagement with Broader Middle East and North African countries. Taylor received his B.A. in Economics summa cum laude from Princeton University and Ph.D. in Economics from Stanford University.

Very well written book.

Fantastic book !!!!
Really a fun to read because it contains so many real-case examples. I graduated in math and read this book just for my personal interest. I wanted a book on economics that explained all the basic stuff, but at a level that was deep enough to challenge me. And this book gave me what I wanted : I started reading it and couldn 't stop until the end.
A reviewer had the remark that there was a lack of mathematics. It is true that really advanced math is avoided, however that does not make the text less rigorous beause all the concepts are cleary explained by using graphs and very basic algebra.
(If this book was about advanced abstract math itself, I would agree that graphs is not a rigorous way to proof things, but this is a book on economics, though, and it goes rather deep for a basic course)
And if you like more math (as I do in fact), you can easily derive the mathematical explanations straight away from the very clearly written text. What is more important however is the fact that this book really learns you how to think like an economist.
I also very much like the editing style, repeated definitions in the left and right marging, a lot of illustrations, a lot of interesting real life case studies, enough space on each page to make your personal annotations... I wish every textbook was like this ...
This book succeeds very well in explaining clearly with enough rigor the basic principles of economics.

A Modern View Of Aggregate Demand and AggregateSupply

This is one of the only texts that uses the inflation rate on the vertical axis of the As-Ad diagram. This is a more modern approach to these curves than the standard approach which
places price level on the vertical axis. Professor Taylor explains Economics in a very clear and interesting way.
It's definitely one of the best Principles books on the market.

About the Author
Roger Tory Peterson, one of the world's greatest naturalists, received every major award for ornithology, natural science, and conservation as well as numerous honorary degrees, medals, and citations, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Peterson Identification System has been called the greatest invention since binoculars. These editions include updated material by Michael O'Brien, Paul Lehman, Bill Thompson III, Michael DiGiorgio, Larry Rosche, and Jeffrey A. Gordon.

The late JOSEPH T. COLLINS was the herpetologist with the Kansas Biological Survey and emeritus at the University of Kansas Natural History Museum, where he worked for thirty years. He was founder and director of the Center for North American Herpetology and author of many articles and books, most recently Amphibians, Reptiles, and Turtles in Kansas (2010; with Suzanne L. Collins and Travis W. Taggart).

ALLIGATOR SNAPPING TURTLE Pls. 3, 9 Macroclemys temminckii IDENTIFICATION: 15–26 in. (38–66 cm); record 311?2 in. (80 cm). Weight 35–150 lbs. (16–68 kg); record 251 lbs. (113.9 kg) for a specimen maintained in captivity for nearly 50 years; 316 lbs. (143.3 kg) for a wild-caught example. Look for the huge head with its strongly hooked beaks, the prominent dorsal keels, and the extra row of scutes on each side of the carapace. Likely to be confused only with Snapping Turtles. Young (Pl. 3): Brown, shell exceedingly rough; tail very long. About 11?4–13?4 in. (3–4.4 cm) at hatching. This gigantic freshwater turtle, our largest and one of the largest in the world, often lies at bottom of lake or river with mouth held open. A curious pink process on floor of mouth resembles a worm, wriggles like one, and serves as a lure for fish. similar species: Snapping Turtle has a saw-toothed tail and a smaller head, and also lacks the extra row of scutes be-tween costals and marginals. range: Sw. Ga. and n. Fla. to e. Texas; north in Mississippi Valley to Kans., Iowa, and sw. Ky.; an isolated record in cen. Tenn.

Everything a field guide should be!

This is the best field guide I've had for herps. The layout is typical; there are color plates of the species and some written commentary and advice on field herping in the front of the book, followed by species accounts and range maps. Fairly typical layout. However, the way in which subspecies were handled is new, at least to me, and incredibly practical and useful. Those subspecies that are readily distinguishable in the field are given full seperate entries and individual range maps, which is particularly nice with certain large species groups (milk and king snakes, Pitouphis, etc.)

My only complaint, and it is minor, is that the taxonomy is old and very conservitive, even given when this book was published. Pitouphis is treated as monospecific genus in the book, whereas it's currently regarded as having several species, and Elaphe is still used for a good many of the colubrids that have since been reassigned. This, however, has little bearing onto the practicality of this field guide, or it's usefullness for ID'ing animals. It's really the best done reptile field guide I've seen, and if you herp the eastern and/or central part of North America, it's a must have. The layout is logical, the subspecies are handled well, the color plates are excellent, and the book is solid enough to actually be used in the field. This continues the Peterson tradition of great reptile guides, and actually improves on it.

Great for kids and their parents too!

I bought this book for my 7 year old god son. I'd seen and used other Peterson Field Guides, and I can only say they keep improving what was great to begin with. Even though my god son can't read all of the words in this guide, the wonderful color photographs with the reptile or amphibian name make it easy for him to understand. He was absolutely thrilled with this book. There are nice sections on how to capture then set up a terrarium, and to care for reptiles and amphibians in captivity. I highly recommend this for any age!

Bob Isaacson is a great teacher!

This book is req'd for a class, but I likely would have bought it anyway. I've seen video lectures by Bob Isaacson and he's an incredible teacher who really seems to know his subject and brings devotion and enthusiasm to all aspects of it. Hearing him speak on "The Love Song of Alfred Prufrock" was a turning point for me in understanding 20th century American poetry.

The format is similar to college reading texts, whereas subjects are discussed with the student responding via essay or Blackboard Discussion boards. This is an ideal text for that, and the price was much less than what I've paid in prior semesters for "Signs of Life in the USA" which had been req'd before.
