About the Author
Dr. Ron Larson is a professor of mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University, where he has taught since 1970. He received his Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Colorado and is considered the pioneer of using multimedia to enhance the learning of mathematics, having authored over 30 software titles since 1990. Dr. Larson conducts numerous seminars and in-service workshops for math educators around the country about using computer technology as an instructional tool and motivational aid. He is the recipient of the 2014 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTAL FUNCTIONS, the 2014 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for PRECALCULUS, the 2012 William Holmes McGuffey Longevity Award for CALCULUS: AN APPLIED APPROACH, and the 1996 Text and Academic Authors Association TEXTY Award for INTERACTIVE CALCULUS (a complete text on CD-ROM that was the first mainstream college textbook to be offered on the Internet). Dr. Larson authors numerous textbooks including the best-selling Calculus series published by Cengage Learning.

The Pennsylvania State University, The Behrend College Bio: Robert P. Hostetler received his Ph.D. in mathematics from The Pennsylvania State University in 1970. He has taught at Penn State for many years and has authored several calculus, precalculus, and intermediate algebra textbooks. His teaching specialties include remedial algebra, calculus, and math education, and his research interests include mathematics education and textbooks.

Dr. Bruce H. Edwards is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Florida. Professor Edwards received his B.S. in Mathematics from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in Mathematics from Dartmouth College. He taught mathematics at a university near Bogotá, Colombia, as a Peace Corps volunteer. While teaching at the University of Florida, Professor Edwards has won many teaching awards, including Teacher of the Year in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Liberal Arts and Sciences Student Council Teacher of the Year, and the University of Florida Honors Program Teacher of the Year. He was selected by the Office of Alumni Affairs to be the Distinguished Alumni Professor for 1991-1993. Professor Edwards has taught a variety of mathematics courses at the University of Florida, from first-year calculus to graduate-level classes in algebra and numerical analysis. He has been a frequent speaker at research conferences and meetings of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. He has also coauthored a wide range of award winning mathematics textbooks with Professor Ron Larson.

Calculus Ain't Easy

First things first: If there was a ten star rating it would apply
to this book. Secondly, I found these authors through another of
their books, "Precalculus With Limits - A Graphing Approach". That book was just as well written. Truth be told, I would buy any of their books, sight unseen. They are a students
teacher and a teachers teacher. They don't sacrifice rigor, nor do they forget the mathematical maturity of their student audience. Using their books alone, and self-study (no classes,
tutors, or the intellectual diet pill category of "Calculus Made
Simple" or "Calculus The Easy Way" silver bullets I filled a forty year gap in math studies in 1-1/2 years to the point of
acing the AP Calculus and AP Physics Exams. Knowing calculus prior to beginning physics with calculus is an absolute necessity. I am no genuis. I do not have exceptional ability. I simply had the advantage of two textbooks written by teachers who
really care and take a mentoring approach to writing. All of this
has really been a long-winded way of saying that with this book
and a healthy dose of strong motivation and perserverance you will succeed in your calculus courses.

The New Standard in Calculus Instruction

This review is a shorter paraphrasing of a much longer and more complete review I wrote just before my computer crashed. I will be bitter for a long time.
Calculus is difficult to learn. No textbook can ever be "Calculus by Osmosis." "Larson/Hostetler" acknowleges this, and acknowledges at the same time the 21st century.
The design of the book is spare, colorful and elegant, highlighted by computer-generated illustrations, an average of one per page, of graceful volumetric forms rotated about their axes and simple, well constructed charts and diagrams. Students of today, used to media that demands nothing from them, will appreciate the designers' capitulations to their needs to have their eyes held by color and shape, to be manipulated around a page by something more than text.
The book is more than instructionally sound. Its examples illustrating each discrete concept, each clearly delineated and set apart in its own section, are the simplest available; they are standards. But more than that, its problem sets, though enormous, are broken up into the different instructional approaches that they take. And these approaches are exhaustive. They examine calculus concepts from every possible angle, including possibly some that didn't exist prior to the publication of this book.
This book is published at a time when many are debating the survival of the book. You are reading this review on the Internet, and are aware of the explosive ability of this medium to inform. The issue is not yet decided, and many would potentially exile the book to the status of an art form, like fencing.
Larson and Hostetler hedge their bets, and have produced multimedia companions to this book ( or maybe just a website, I'm not sure.) This reviewer has not seen these.
Whatever the case, students today still overwhelmingly use books in the classroom. This book is a fitting bridge between the current state of affairs and whatever media of instruction are to come. It is the best available.

Grade 5 Up-A strikingly illustrated collection of poems with a decidedly anti-war sentiment. The selections, covering conflicts from ancient Persia to modern-day Bosnia, are by a wide variety of poets, from the well known (Tennyson, Whitman, Sandburg, Auden), to the obscure (Anakreon from ancient Greece and 11th-century Chinese poet Bunno), to relatively unknown contemporary poets from all over the world. Most of the poems, however, arise from experiences of the two World Wars. They represent a variety of styles and almost all are shaded by an elegiac mood expressing the misery and horrors of war. Though many of the works can be found in other anthologies, the artwork here enhances them all, even Yeats's masterful "An Irish Airman Foresees His Death." The stark and simple scratchboard drawings are reminiscent of the Ernie Pyle illustrations from World War II and are as memorable as the best propaganda. The poems are easily accessed by three indexes: poet, title, and first line. The only drawback is that, despite the diversity of voices and experiences, the one-sided presentation tends to come off as one-noted and diminishes the power of the individual works.

Gr. 6 and up. With so much attention focused on Spielberg's war movie, Saving Private Ryan, teens will be open to this somber anthology and to the questions the poems raise for each of us. Is war about glory, as in Tennyson's "Charge of the Light Brigade" and in the traditional war songs of the Ojibwa? Or is war about horror, as in most twentieth-century poetry? Philip's answer in his fine introduction is that even the poetry about the cruelty of war records the bravery and dignity of soldiers and civilians. As in all noteworthy world anthologies, the meaning is also in the connections across time and place (from ancient China and classical Greece to Hiroshima, Vietnam, and Bosnia), with much in translation from the French, German, Russian, Japanese, and more. At the center are the great World War I poets, many of them soldiers, who saw not the honor, but the futility. A brief note with each poem indicates when it was written and which war it refers to. Wherever they come from, the voices are as plain and recognizable as Auden's Roman Wall soldier who doesn't know why he's there ("I've lice in my tunic and a cold in my nose"). The book design is spacious and open, with thick paper and clear type, and Michael McCurdy's powerful scratchboard drawings in black and white, some small, some full-page, show the humanity and the ruin of those who came back and those left "hanging on the old barbed wire." This startling and honest presentation of the horrors of war from Philip and McCurdy (American Fairy Tales, 1996, etc.) uses poems to thoughtfully balance the often romanticized vision of battle as an expression of bravery and honor. Terror, agony, mass slaughter, absurdity, pointlessness, and cruelty are the subjects of poets writing from ancient times to the present; there are also elegies for warriors, celebrating their brave deaths. Carl Sandburg, Walt Whitman, and Stephen Crane share pages with Anakreon and Simonides; there are contributors from Beirut and Bosnia, as well as from the death trains of WWII. Among McCurdy's somber and realistic black-and-white illustrations are dead soldiers hanging on barbed wire, and a lone soldier standing in a graveyard, holding his head as he says goodbye to those who have died on the fields. Have you ever wished that there were know such thing as war? "War and the Pity of War" is a poetry book about war. The poems are different in many ways because people have different feelings about war.

"War and the Pity of War" is a great book. It was sad because the war that is going on right now is much worst than the wars that were going on in the book. This book made me think about the war that is going on right now. The war is worst these days because scientists have come up with new deadly weapons.

I will recommend "War and the Pity of War" to anyone that likes to read poetry. This book will be a great book of people who like action or war books because you will want to read this book again and again.

Have you ever wished there was no war. "WAR and THE PITY OF WARS" is book full of poetry about war and the soldiers survive. Not all of the poems are the same. Just like how wars aren't the same. These poems tell you about war and how it is in combat and how the life is behind enemy lines.

Good Stuff

I received the book pretty quick after I ordered it which is a definite plus because it was for school. I can't recall how long but no more than a week. The book itself is a good read and really highlights what government is all about. The tests at the end of each chapter are helpful along with the answers at the end of the book. The charts and graphs are interesting. Although this book describes political issues as far a procedures to change or implement them it doesn't seem to get politically sided. That is a definite plus for me because it's too easy to get mad at an author and have that taint your view of the information they are giving.
The book was in great shape when it arrived and the contents pages are well organized for quick reference. The only thing negative I would say is the price seemed a little high, but it is a good book and is politically current. I suppose in a few years the price will drop dramatically when a new edition comes out.

Many of these fledglings fail to reach the sea on this maiden flight, landing in Halla's village below the cliffs. Here the children wait, armed with cardboard boxes and flashlights, racing to rescue the pufflings before they become prey for cats or dogs, or run over by passing vehicles. Staying up all night, sleeping late into the morning, the children spend two unusual weeks rescuing thousands of baby birds and releasing them to the sea. McMillan's crisp full-color photos record courting and nesting behavior of the puffins and the activities of the children waiting for and performing their rescues. This is one of the loveliest children's books I've ever read -- not only because the photographs are so stunning -- gorgeously reproduced, and in turns beautiful, humorous, charming, or downright cute -- but also because it shows children working together to take care of the natural world. Really, really wonderful -- don't miss it.

Excellent story of the lives of children in another country

This is a story about small children on an island off the coast of Iceland and how they save pufflings--baby puffins--who go astray on their first flight to the sea and get stranded on the island. The photography is beautiful, and the story emphasizes the puffins' life cycle and how the children know to be ready to rescue the pufflings at the end of the summer. The book is a wonderful vehicle for children where I live (New York City) to imagine life in a completely different place.

Love it....

We have loved this book for years now, and I wish it was easier to get. I wanted to get a copy for each of my children as we just experienced the Night of the Pufflings ourselves, but it must be out of print. Bruce McMillan has managed to capture the event so realistically that we in fact used his book as a "how to" manual of sorts. He describes everything from how the children capture the pufflings to how and where they are released. It gives children - anywhere in the world - a wonderful look into how other children live! We also like, how he incorporated Icelandic words (and their pronounciations) into the book. A wonderfully written and illustrated book!

Although it is earlier edition, it is what our classes currently use. They cover "designer" garlic, garlic festivals, growing your own, and more, with lots of esoteric information and trivia along the way (such as the little-known fact that 22 states have issued "garlic" license plates). Entertaining and filled with delicious recipes, this is recommended for most collections.

Outstanding single ingredient cookbook

I have made five recipes from this book in quick succession, and each has been fantastic both in terms of flavor profile and execution. The Griffiths clearly have a sophisticated palate and enjoy elegant rustic food which is fancy enough to serve at a dinner party. The Amazing Mussels in Saffron Garlic and Sun Dried Tomatoes were exceptionally delicious and really wowed the guests last night. The Endive and Prosciutto Salad with Garlic and Walnuts has a fantastic light dressing and could have been served at a modern Italian restaurant. Also great are Skodarlia--a strange but delicious Greek potato dip that no one could stop eating--and the Garden Garlic Soup, which benefited from a little cream and was incredibly sophisticated and delicious both hot and (possibly even better) cold. There are recipes from all over the world but most seem to derive from the Mediterranean. One will become fearless and skilled in the use of garlic if one cooks through this book, as I've already learned a ton just from making these few recipes. I highly recommend this book.

outstanding recipes for all occasions

I bought this book after attending a summer garlic festival, where I found there were so many varieties of garlic that were unfamiliar to me. Of course, I came home with way too much garlic and found that I needed a new cookbook in order to make good use of it. Along with this book, I also ordered "The Garlic Lovers' Cookbook, v. 2" which is based on recipes from the well-known Gilroy Garlic Festival. Both books have received outstanding recommendations here, but my favorite of the two would definitely be "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic." It is much more informative about all aspects of garlic and its many varieties, and the range of recipes and cooking techniques described is unequalled anywhere else. It is simply outstanding. Even the smallest details, such as advice about which sort of garlic presses work best, are useful and interesting. (I have also found it quite easy to adapt many of the recipes in this book for a slow cooker.)

There are so many recipes that I want to make from this book that life suddenly seems too short to make them all. However, I started by tweaking some of my old favorites, versions of which are in this book. In every case, I have been able to improve on my favorite recipes. Whether your taste runs to American, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Indian, or other cuisines, you are likely to find recipes here that will please. I appreciated especially a chapter on "light meals" that is perfect for everyday use, and there are also many recipes that are great for special occasions. The wine pairings are also interesting for each recipe; normally I don't pay much attention to such suggestions, but in this case they truly are useful and do compliment the dishes extraordinarily well.

The cookbook from the Gilroy Festival mentioned above is worth a look too, and if you're only looking for standard fare and simple ways of using garlic, it may suffice. It even has a recipe for homemade dog biscuits with garlic! However, it has no pizza, no lasagna or other standard fare, and the recipes in it are loaded with garlic but lack the care and subtlety of approach that keeps me coming back to "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic." It's a great cookbook and, if you already enjoy garlic, you'll easily double your pleasure for it once you start cooking from this book.

A Great Cookbook for Garlic Lovers

Like many of my cookbooks, this was something I found on the shelf in a bookstore, looked through it, and immediately knew I had to have it.
Since then, it's received quite a bit of heavy use - there are a few certain recipes that the book falls right open to, they've been used so much. Others have yet to be tried, but they look just as delicious and appealing as others.
There is plenty of information on selecting and storing garlic, along with preparing it, and even a selection of trivia and stories, making it more than just a list of recipes using the wonderful ingredient. They also recommend some kitchen tools to make it easier to work with garlic - the garlic peeler they recommend is truly magnificent.
The recipes cover the entire range of foods, from simple appetizers and salads, to fancy main courses - to even a few desserts. I regularly hunt down new recipes I have yet to try, and have not been disappointed with any to date. And the Pork Chops with stuffing recipe in here has become my favorite method of cooking pork.
The recipes are also easy to read and follow - no confusing ingredient listings or unclear instructions.

An early John Muir adventure

This is one of John Muir's early books. In this book he travels through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida examining the flora and making sketches and saving samples.This was not an easy walk for there were few roads. He experiences some interesting situations along this route...sleeping in a cemetary, illness, getting lost etc. The book ends with him in California, a part which I merely scanned as it had little to do with the Gulf.

but it is great so far

Havent quite finished the book yet, but it is great so far. It is amazing to see the difference between his time and my time. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to walk in his shoes, to see things the way he saw them. What an interesting life it must have been.
