Little Dog Poems, by Kristine O'Connell George

From cold-nose wake-up to bedtime with a Little Dog-shaped lump under the covers, a day that a little girl spends with her Little Dog is recounted in thirty short, playful poems and enchanting watercolor illustrations. Little Dog protects the little girl from vacuum cleaners and beetles, chases cats, digs up flowers, and waits hopefully as kitchen preparations take place and as popcorn is eaten. The little girl, who loves Little Dog enough to "bake / birthday cookies with / liver powder," retrieves tennis balls, brings home a present from the pet store, and observes how little a wet Little Dog becomes at bath time. A perfect introduction to the pleasures of poetry, this beguiling volume belongs on every young dog lover's bookshelf.

From Publishers Weekly
Experienced dog owners will recognize the familiar behavior of a winsome brown puppy as it attacks the "enemy" vacuum cleaner until it "stops growling," or as it barks until its owner "witness[es]/ the triumphA/ one cornered beetle." Otani's (Chibi: A True Story from Japan) skillful watercolors of the girl and her fluff of a dog are sweetly fetching, whether the protagonist is scolding Little Dog for chewing her new green socks or whether she is "having accidents" with her popcorn so Little Dog can share her treat. Otani's familiarity with the exuberance and joy of puppies and children shines through her delicate watercolors, and she depicts their pounces and feints, cuddles and anticipation, with a deft sense of line. George's text, however, is disappointingly slight, especially considering the dexterity of her The Great Frog Race and Other Poems. Largely devoid of the tools of poetryAmetaphor, rhythm, form, imagery, clever word playAthese entries seem like a series of child-size sentences broken into short line lengths. "Cozy," for example, consists entirely of the following lackluster description: "Little Dog tugs/ an enormous pillow/ all the way across the room/ to sit beside the fire/ with me." Occasionally George strikes a resonant chord, as in "Birthday": "Only someone/ who loves Little Dog/ very much/ would bake/ birthday cookies/ with liver powder." Despite Otani's engaging and inventive illustrations, this depiction of a girl and her dog seems uninspired. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 3-Thirty short poems about a lively terrier, narrated by the dog's young mistress. The girl describes how her pet wakes her up in the morning, chases the vacuum cleaner, digs holes in the garden, chews up socks, snuggles up at bedtime, etc. The free-verse poems resemble haiku ("Little Dog's cold nose/is better than any/alarm clock"). The placement of the text indicates pauses and emphasizes certain words. In "Mail Delivery," the last five words are spread out to mimic the action described: "Little Dog proudly carries in the mail,/one/letter/at/a/time." In "Morning Nap," the words are arranged in a spiral-letters gradually shrinking in size-to suggest the dog's movements. Each poem appears on a separate page and is accompanied by a realistic watercolor-and-ink illustration. The appealing paintings show the pooch interacting with its owner, a sweet-faced girl. Myra Cohn Livingston's Dog Poems (Holiday, 1990; o.p.) and Lee Bennett Hopkins's A Dog's Life (Harcourt, 1983; o.p.) celebrate the world's most popular pet; however, they are aimed at an older audience and vary widely in tone and content. The poetry and paintings in Little Dog Poems complement one another wonderfully and bring to life an engaging canine character.

Absolutely lovely
By Amazon Addict
Ms. O'Connell George's simple prose come together beautifully in this lovely story. Perfect for Pre-K through early elementary.

Younger children will enjoy the simple verses. For my 8 year old son, who is a dog lover, he just enjoyed learning the story, but also had his eyes open to how simple poetry can be... doesn't have to rhyme and be some long hard to understand thing.

A great poetry intro. Also be sure to check out Little Dog and Duncan .. which seems even better than the original little dog and is a great friendship story.

Little Dog Poems & Little Dog and Duncan
By A Customer
I have read both of these Little Dog books to my first grade students and they enjoyed each and every poem very much!!! Many of my students bonded with the child and her dog and had lots of stories to tell and write about their own experiences with pets.
These are two of my favorite books to read to them when I talk about poems not having to rhyme to be poems. I wish Ms. George would write more books about Little Dog and his experiences!

The Beaded Moccasins: The Story of Mary Campbell, by Lynda Durrant

On the morning of her twelfth birthday, Mary Campbell gets angry with her mother and storms out of the cabin-never to return. As she picks wild strawberries and plans her apology, Mary is captured by Delaware Indians and plunged into a life that is fearsome, strenuous, and utterly unlike the one she knows, beginning with the journey on foot from Pennsylvania to the Delawares' new home in Ohio Territory. As the idea of escape becomes less feasible and less urgent, Mary finds herself adapting to the routines, traditions, and beliefs of her captors, and discovers within herself reserves of strength she hadn't known were hers. The life of the real Mary Campbell, taken by Delawares in 1759, is the basis for this enthralling, historically detailed adventure, and for the perceptive portrait of a young woman finding her place in a culture vastly different from her own.

From School Library Journal
Grade 5-8AWith historical and cultural detail, Durrant tells the story of 12-year-old Mary Campbell's capture and first year of captivity among the Delaware Indians. Based on a real incident, this fictionalized account is entertaining, insightful, and compassionate. Kidnapped in 1759 from her Pennsylvania home, Mary is selected to replace the deceased granddaughter of the chief. Angry, lonely, and frightened, she resists assimilation into the tribe. However, by story's end, she recognizes her Indian family's genuine affection for her, helps with daily chores, and earns the name Woman-Who-Saved-the-Corn for her valiant efforts to salvage the tribe's crops. Throughout her ordeal, Mary weighs the amenities and relationships of her past life against the hardships and isolation of her current existence. The dissatisfaction she once felt for her real family fades as she struggles to understand the values of her tribal family. Mary's quaint, observant narrative reveals a young girl coming of age, discovering her inner strength, and gaining sensitivity to the needs and hopes of others. A glossary of Delaware terms, a list of sources, and an afterword that completes the facts of Campbell's true story are included. Readers will find Mary an appealing, courageous, perceptive character. Language-arts and social-studies teachers can integrate the girl's experiences into discussions of multicultural awareness, family values, and colonial-Indian conflicts.AGerry Larson, Durham Magnet Center, Durham, NC

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-9. In this strong fictionalization, Durrant tells the story of 12-year-old Mary Campbell, who was kidnapped by the Delaware Indians from her family farm in Pennsylvania in 1759. She was to replace the dead granddaughter of the Delaware leader. Mary's first-person, present-tense narrative will hold readers fast: the terror of her capture, the physicalness of the arduous winter journey across the mountains to Ohio, and the candor about her inner struggle as a captive who begins to feel part of her new family. Few of the Delaware are individualized, except for her adoptive grandfather, but there is no reverential stereotyping. Mary has seen him order the scalping of a baby, but he is gentle with her, and she comes to love and respect him. Nor is there nostalgia for her lost home. Like the girl in Karen Cushman's Ballad of Lucy Whipple (1996), Mary has always resented her father for uprooting the family from their town in Connecticut and dragging them on his "westering" adventure. Far away now in a mountain cave, she is ashamed of that anger and bitterness, even while she knows it was not all her fault. She gets too articulate and messagey at the end of the story, but readers will be moved by the psychological truth of her adjustment and her yearning to prove herself and belong. Hazel Rochman

Review
"Durrant's exceptionally graceful prose and nonjudgmental description of the cultural chasm between the colonists' and Delawares' worlds set this novel apart."--The Bulletin, Recommended

"Language-arts and social studies teachers can integrate the girl's experience into discussions of multicultural awareness, family values, and colonial-Indian conflicts."--School Library Journal

Too short!
By A Customer
I was really disappointed that this book was so short; I could have read on and on about Mary Campbell. I just loved reading as she transformed from a petulant, selfish brat to a person who put the good of her family and community before her own needs. "The Beaded Moccassins" does not simplify this transformation by making judgements about Europeans or Indians, instead it shows this transformation as something that occurs out of sense of maturity and a desire to belong. A coming of age story as well as the story of an Indian captive.
As I said before I wish it had been longer. It only covers the first year or so of what turned into a six year long captivity. It would have been great to see the person Mary became among the Indians at age 18, and how she and both her families, white and red, reacted to her return to the whites.
I grew up near the area where most of this book takes place.(I am a native of Cleveland, Ohio.) Yet I never heard of Mary Campbell before I read "The Beaded Moccassins." I enjoyed this book so much that the next time I go back to Ohio for a visit, I plan on taking some time to visit that cave where Mary spent her first winter among the Indians.

Hard working protaganist
By Morgan
You move somewhere you do not want to and then are made to do more chores than your brother and then to top it all off, you get captured by the Delaware Indians then work for them in there garden are made their daughter only because theirs died! Well you would find these details in the book The Beaded Moccasins.
This historical fiction was about a girl named Mary Campbell. She was just turning 12. She loved her family but they would bug her sometimes. Mary came from Fairfield, Connecticut and was made to move west to Ohio. Her dad called it westering. I think she was brave and courageous. Mary always wanted to be outside and never work hard. She was kind of selfish until she was captured. For example when she was made to work in the garden and last in that cold winter with just a dress and leggings. She really started to feel that she did something that she could never fix and she should have not ran out into the field and disrespect her mother and that where she lived before was much better than where she is now.
There were many good details and interesting settings. For example the Campbell's farm was set on fire by the Delaware Indians just to capture Mary. Also Mary felt very lonely and afraid of life. She needed to be more courageous. The Delaware made the boys jump into the ice covered river to make them stronger so she tried it and her Grand father whipped her so hard. I didn't like one part of the book because the Delaware killed Mrs. Stewart's baby because it would not stop crying. But over all the novel was very intense and kept me on the edge of my seat.

The Magic Kingdom: Walt Disney and the American Way of Life, by Steven Watts

The Magic Kingdom is a full-length investigation of the life of Walt Disney, arguably the principal architect of mass culture in our time. By mid-century, "Uncle Walt" had become an American icon and was universally acknowledged as the spokesman for the American way of life; yet, paradoxically, he was instrumental in changing our social assumptions. Probing Disney's public life as a creative entrepreneur, Steven Watts argues that Disney reflected a central irony of modern American culture: while proclaiming a genuine allegiance to the values of an earlier age (self-reliance, the work ethic, the culture of domesticity, sexual inhibition), he also took the lead in creating the modern world of consumer self-fulfillment. His great creations - from Mickey Mouse to Disneyland - embody the transformation of American popular culture, moving from the satirical edge of what Watts calls the "sentimental populism" of the Depression era to the uncritical, celebratory "sentimental libertarianism" of the Cold War. Watts also digs deeply into Disney's private life, investigating his roles as husband, father, and brother and providing fresh insight into his peculiar psyche - his genuine folksiness and warmth, his domineering treatment of colleagues and friends, his deepest prejudices and passions. Full of colorful sketches of daily life at the Disney Studio and tales about the creation of Disneyland and Disney World, The Magic Kingdom offers a definitive view of one of the most influential Americans in the twentieth century.

From Library Journal
Although the Disney studio was hailed as a dream factory, there was plenty of hard work and hard-nosed business deals behind the facade. Drawing on interviews and research from Disney archives, Watts shows how Disney and mid-America influenced each other, from the birth of the animation empire, through the "libertarian populism" of the Fifties film, TV, and theme-park efforts, to Walt's untimely death in 1966. Other topics include Disney's pioneering role in business "integration" (using one side of the business to promote another side), his idealization of small-town life, his contagious creative enthusiasm, and his growing conservatism and abiding contempt for unions. Whether selling World War II to an anxious home front, lifting spirits in the Depression, soothing America's Cold War fears, or catering to the new leisure and consumer society, Disney had a unique rapport with average Americans. Portrayed as neither devil nor saint, Disney emerges as a human and sometimes sympathetic figure. This lively, witty, and insightful study is likely to become a standard. Highly recommended for academic and public libraries. [Two other Disney biographers in recent years have accused the Disney family of attempting to undermine criticisms of him; for a more critical appraisal see Marc Eliot's Walt Disney: Hollywood's Dark Prince, LJ 5/1/93.?Ed.]?Stephen Rees, Levittown Reg. Today's Disney entertainment empire might rephrase Watts' subtitle to read "Walt Disney IS the American Way of Life" as part of its seeming dedication to crafting sanitized versions of aspects of the American ideal and then selling the bejesus out of them. Watts' biography of the creator of Mickey, Donald, and Goofy examines Disney's role in the creation of American consumer culture and his and his company's successful commercial feeding of that culture's voracious entertainment appetites. The book, Watts says, exemplifies "something of a hybrid genre: part biography and part cultural analysis, an anatomy of Disney's productions as well as an anatomy of their consumption." Fully referenced and forcefully and cogently argued, it does an excellent job of tying together all the facets--artistic, commercial, and personal--of the Disney saga. "Walt Disney has been, arguably, the most influential American of the twentieth century," Watts concludes. This valuable, unique book about him will be greatly valued by fans, cynics, and semioticians alike. Mike Tribby

Review
...a massive grab bag of a book... The Magic Kingdom is an invaluable mine of material on how the American century became the Disney century, a world from Russia to Chile dominated by a Disney-esque culture overseen by the company Walt created. However, as we ready ourselves for our exit from Walt's century into what looks increasingly like the century of Disney Inc., we still await the biographer who can lead us, critical faculties intact, to an exit sign. Perhaps, though, as in any dystopian story worth its salt, there will be no exit from this theater. -- The Los Angeles Times Sunday Book Review, Tom Engelhardt

Part biography, part cultural history, The Magic Kingdom gives us a vivid portrait of the man behind Mickey Mouse, while at the same time situating his anomalous achievement within a social and aesthetic context. We are left with an appreciation of just why Disney's work resonated so strongly in the popular imagination and how it evolved over six decades.... a terrifically readable and illuminating book. -- The New York Times, Michiko Kakutani

Walt Disney's life was a fascinating journey--would that the book were equally fascinating. Unfortunately, Watts ... has chosen a poor format. He'll sum up in a few pages the progress Disney made over, say, a decade and then spend the next few chapters going over and over the ramifications. In discussing Disney's numerous projects, he'll dutifully, ploddingly report what the critics said, both for and against, only occasionally enlivening the proceedings with his own point of view.... Watts's scholarly research (there are 57 pages of notes) has turned up enough information for several books. Unfortunately, he tells his story in a way Walt wouldn't have let get past a first draft. -- Reason, Steve Kurtz

The First Balanced View of Walt Disney
By A Customer
As one critic noted recently, Walt Disney's career has inspired either hurrahs or sneers. The folks at Disney have authorized or even manufactured a whole series of haigiographies. As for the opposing camp, it has its own sacred text, Richard Schickel's THE DISNEY VERSION, which not just not a haigiography, but a blanket attack on both the work of the Disney studio and the fans of the films they produced.
But there has not, until now, been a serious book about Disney and his mouse factory. Steven Watt's combination biography/cultural study accomplishes this task without either ignoring the real warts on Disney's character or sinking into eye-glazing cultural-studies babble (at no time does he accuse Disney of "phallocentricity," which is a singular accomplishment in and of itself).
Walt Disney began as something of a liberal populist, became a decided conservative, and in his later years became a great believer in the sort of social engineering that both the liberal and conservative establishments seemed to be rather enthusiastic about back in the 1960's, expressed in his original plans for EPCOT, a planned community where everything would be clean and safe and happy, whether that's how people wanted it or not . . .
Certainly that's how Disney wanted it. Disneyland and Disney World seem expressions of his desperate desire to create a place where the lonliness and misery of his childhood couldn't find him, or anyone else. Certainly, the parks are among the most well-ordered and polite imaginable, thanks to the work of his artists and engineers. There are those who find this horrifying, an effort to reduce visitors to passive, unthinking consumers of spectacle and merchandise, putty in the hands of the Disney Company and their corporate cohorts.
Most importantly, he reminds us of the fact that Disney was not just the name of a media super-company, but the name that meant joyous, wildly-imaginative screen entertainment, an explosion that took years to go off, but shook and delighted American society, both mass and class, from November of 1928 until the late months of 1941. A tough animator's strike in 1941, which he regarded as a personal attack on his beneficence (which was rather capricious and never really extended to the inkers and painters in the firm), helped begin the process which made Disney into a rather reactionary figure (although not a race-baiter or as hateful as many Hollywood right-wingers). It also broke up his original group of animators, and the films were never quite the same after that. But those 13 years produced some of the true masterpieces of popular entertainment, and that should never be forgotten.

Walt Disney would have approved it!
By Nikola Raguz
I have read 4 biographies about this man ("An American Original," "The Disney Version," Mosley's "Disney's World: A biography," Eliot's "Hollywood's Dark Prince") and now I realize that I should have acquired this book before, so I wouldn't need to read all of the above stated books.
This book provides Walt's personal story, studio development, good and bad critics, Disney's place in history and his shaping of American culture. It is not biased, but gives a balanced view on a man and his company. It made me believe in this book, since I was very sceptical towards "truths" written in other Walt Disney biographies. In those, Walt was portrayed as either a perfect person, or a villain of the 20th century.
The Magic Kingdom is the balanced truth and the best biography of a man that shaped American culture without a doubt.

The Best Biography of Walt Disney Hands Down
By K. Bruce
Easily the best biography out there on Walt Disney hands down. It will never be topped. It neither kisses his hiney as Bob Thomas' studio sanctioned biography does, nor does it discount him as merely a low brow populist (as Richard Schickel did), nor lies about him as some sort of communist spy in order to sell books. Not only is this biography even handed, but Mr. Watts makes brilliant connections between Walt and his time that no other biographer had the insight to do. This is a fair, balanced, well organized, incredibly entertaining biography that really brings the real Walt Disney to life. Steven Watts is a genius biographer.

No collection of essays can match the Best American series for the variety of subjects explored, the first-rate quality of pieces, and the eclectic approaches to the genre gathered in its pages each year. With characteristic flair, it provides that rare and refreshing opportunity for readers to take stock of the year's most distinguished and provocative nonfiction. Continuing the celebrated tradition, the 1995 edition dazzles and surprises with its inventive, colorful cornucopia of essays drawn from periodicals across the country. Showcased here are the preeminent pieces from the Los Angeles Times and The New Yorker, from Harper's Magazine and The Alaska Quarterly Review, written by some of today's finest prose stylists, including Edward Hoagland, Grace Paley, Cynthia Ozick, William Gass, John Edgar Wideman, and Joseph Brodsky. Guest editor Jamaica Kincaid, one of America's most illustrious storytellers and essayists, has culled her top twenty choices, assembling works of remarkable su

Readers expecting Kincaid's choices for best American essays to reflect her own fiction style-i.e., taut and direct-are bound to be disappointed. There are some accessible pieces-Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s on African American hair and Maxine Kumin's on gardening stand out as the kind of engaging and illuminating essays that readers have come to expect from this annual collection. But these pieces-as well as memoirs by Grace Paley, John Edgar Wideman and Tobias Wolff-are overwhelmed by pedantic ramblings that uneasily straddle the line between intellectual and pretentious. Consider this: Josephine Foo's title, "Endou" had to be footnoted (it means "endow")-and the content's not much more accessible or Elaine Scarry's "Counting At Dusk (Why Poetry Matters When the Century Ends)" which includes convoluted prose like this: "Against this impossibility of experiential sequence is the poet's own act of lifting forward, making sensuously available, the phenomenon of sequence." Perhaps Kincaid appreciates this sort of writing. But this series isn't supposed to be a forum for abstruse musings-that's what academic specialty journals are for.

Guest editor Kincaid delivers a satisfying if wonderless selection in this year's Best. From Joseph Brodsky's weighty "Homage to Marcus Aurelius," which opens the collection, to Elaine Scarry's academic "Counting at Dusk (Why Poetry Matters When the Century Ends)," Kincaid has brought out the heavy guns. William H. Gass's "The Art of Self," a long-winded, solipsistic take on biography, is juxtaposed with Henry Louis Gates Jr.'s humorous childhood depiction of "good" and "bad" black hair in "In the Kitchen." Edward Hoagland offers bittersweet remembrances of cheating on his wife in "Strange Perfume" and Cynthia Ozick of her six days without pen or paper in Greenwich Village's Women's House of Detention. Maxine Kumin's "Jicama, Without Expectation," a diary of the growing season from her farm, punctuates the collection like a sudden, refreshing shower. The essays have appeared in the New Yorker, Artes, Harper's, the Threepenny Review, and others. For literature collections.?Amy Boaz, "Library Journal"

Each year, one reviewer or another raves about the latest volume in this outstanding series. That's because each editor of The Best American Essays, talented writers in their own right (and we're talking about people like Susan Sontag, Tracy Kidder, and Annie Dillard), truly does choose the most vital of that year's crop. Kincaid, a uniquely sensual and sensitive novelist as well as an essayist, bluntly explains that she chose each of these 20 essays because they pleased her--as they will please all essay enthusiasts and fans of such writers as Edna O'Brien, Cynthia Ozick, Harold Brodkey, William Gass, Grace Paley, Tobias Wolf, and John Edgar Wideman. The volume begins with a witty and masterful piece about antiquity by Joseph Brodsky and includes essays by two other poets, Maxine Kumin and Charles Simic. Bernard Cooper's essay about his first encounter with transvestites and recognition of his attraction to men is as supple and moving as essays get, and Edward Hoagland's discussion of marriage is gratifyingly candid. Kincaid writes, "Living is urgent, not to be taken lightly" ; we concur and praise essayists for giving voice to this urgency and import. Donna Seaman

Essays are perhaps the greatest literary form in history;
the good ones are always a pleasure to read, the
best ones touch us, arouses something deep inside in our heart and mind, and all of them are short, usually under thirty minutes to read. So, when there is an annual anthology of the best American essays, how can one resist? The entries span a wide range, from Marcus Aurelius to homosexuality to gardening. And although there is no unifying theme, all of the authors showcase the power of pure, unrestrained writing, the brilliance often missing from today's commercial periodicals
