Kindergarten-Grade 2-A young girl tells the story of a special relationship over four seasons. Summer brings the promise of a whole month at her grandparents' country cottage, where days are spent playing cards, enjoying the outdoors, and simply talking. Grandpa delights in telling whimsically creative tales to answer his granddaughter's everyday questions. He blames "a roaring tornado" for his baldness, and explains that winter's frost is the work of "elves who come at dusk with magical brushes-." Each of Grandpa's imaginative explanations is followed by the girl's fervent refrain: "And Grandpa never lies, so I know it's true." Reality intrudes, and without warning. The narrator simply states, "Then Grandma died. Suddenly." While the child and her grandfather cope with their loss with a faith in life's ultimate goodness that is poignantly portrayed, some readers might not make the transition quite so easily. Nevertheless, the lyrical language and engaging use of imagery are worth noting. Richly hued acrylic illustrations complement the mood of the text, moving smoothly from bright and fanciful to dark and somber. Suitable for read-alouds, but perhaps even better for sharing individually.

Ages 4-7. A young girl's first-person narration describes her special relationship with her grandparents, especially Grandpa. In summer the girl spends a month at her grandparents' house in the woods, where they hunt fossils and track deer, "but mostly just talk." In the fall, there's hot chocolate while Grandpa reads fairy tales. Walks and icicle sword fights begin winter, during which Grandma dies. The little girl and Grandpa mourn together. Grandpa visits the girl in the spring. They've both had time to heal: they eat cereal on the porch and plan for summer. Despite the death, this is an upbeat, joyous story of an intergenerational relationship that will strike a chord with many children. Stevenson's acrylic pictures are done in an appealing painterly style, with obvious brushstrokes and interesting use of color and line. This heartwarming story is a good choice for celebrating Grandparents Day; it can also be used in a unit on seasons. Lauren Peterson

This story is based upon the relationship between a young girl and her Grandpa. This picture book has great illustrations along with a simple yet heart-warming look at how a tradegy can be coped with someone dear to you.

Wonderful, loving, but not sappy or sentimental!

Grandparent/grandchild stories tend to be a little sappy, so I'm often not a huge fan. But I absolutely love this one. Ralph Fletcher's beautiful text, told in a straightforward way but with wonderful imagery and action, is complemented by gorgeous art by Harvey Stevenson. The icicles! And that lighting that changes throughout the year. Sigh. Wonderful.

Made For A College Student, But Great For High Schoolers

This rather large book is great for those taking the Advanced placement European history exam. It is clear and concise. Its content is rather wordy but it includes many topics in each subject. For example, in the Chapter of the Rennaissance, it shows what the men were doing and the women's role in that time period. It also adds details about major battles, important writers and artist of that time period. The Ap European Exam includes a lot of this imformation that will surely be found in this book. I liked the book because of its complete source of information pertaining to the AP european exam. If you want a great score on the exam this book is for you. The study guide made for this book is also a great outline and preview to each chapter and is very helpful in taking the test.

The illustrations are striking and bright, and the added decorative elements enliven the pages. The layout and ample white space will snare reluctant readers; explanations of the illusions and how they work are adequate, although not detailed. A fresh presentation for young puzzlers.

Although the main audience for this book will probably be middle-graders, young children and even some older students will flock to the pictures Westray has gathered to illustrate optical illusions. What's nice is that there's nothing (other than perhaps the size of the book) that will drive older children away. The crisp artwork is reminiscent of appliqued samplers in its simplicity of line and color, and the text is minimal, concentrating mainly on helping readers fix their gaze correctly. Curious children won't find enough explanation to clarify the brain-vision connections Westray demonstrates, but they'll have a great time experimenting with the more than 20 color, line, size, and pattern tricks she so nicely displays. Westray (A Color Sampler, 1993, ALA Notable) creates 26 artfully rendered optical illusions in an attractive array of subtly muted colors. Decorative folk art-style figures add interest to the eye-fooling images; these also incorporate illusions--e.g., on the title page, a stylized pineapple has a grid like one in the first illusion, while broken capital letters demonstrate the brain's eagerness to complete an image. The variety here is instructive and intriguing--color contrasts or patterning that seem to create movement; images swimming out of focus; alternate patterns or spaces to be perceived in a single picture; perspectives or juxtapositions that confuse size judgments; and more. Thoughtful commentary and intelligent sequencing make this a lucid and beautifully designed book that will be useful for assignments but will also be enjoyed simply for its presentation. Just as dancing is "the art of moving in accord with a pattern," says Mary Oliver, so is writing metrical verse. "One sorts out the pattern, one relies on it, and relaxes from effort to pleasure." The rules (concerning rhyme, line length, and pattern) are made if not to be deliberately flouted, then at least to be toyed with. Oliver claims to have written this book for both writers and readers of metrical verse, but it is an odd sort of fit for either. A writer might wish for a little more detail; a reader might find too much. The book works best as a kind of refresher course, for those who have forgotten the difference between metaphysical and Petrarchan conceits, between masculine and feminine rhymes, and would like to brush up a bit. Oliver does a wonderful job of explaining why the most common forms of metrical verse came to prevail (for instance, the five-foot line is "the line which is the closest to the breathing capacity of our lungs"), and of nudging us into reading more metrical poetry (nearly half this volume is devoted to works by John Donne, William Blake, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Bishop, and others). Blessedly, Oliver reminds us that, though one could get carried away trying new meters and forms, one shouldn't expect to be writing a lot of double ionics anytime soon. About the Author
Mary Oliver is one of the most celebrated and best-selling poets in America. Her books include Red Bird; Our World; Thirst; Blue Iris; New and Selected Poems, Volume One; and New and Selected Poems, Volume Two. She has also published five books of prose, including Rules for the Dance and, most recently, Long Life. She lives in Provincetown, Massachusetts.

A masterful, spare, profound look at the craft of poetry.

Mary Oliver brings to this small book all the clarity and economy that characterize her poetry, and produces the most plain-spoken, profound work that I have read on poetry as a conscious craft. The book is divided into five parts. Part One is 12 brief, carefully-exampled chapters with titles like "Breath", "Line Length", and "Meter in Non-Metric Verse". Part Two is a single chapter on "Style". Part Three explores scansion for both reader and writer. Part Four is a 2-page statement of the timelessness of poetry. Part Five is a fine little anthology of works studied in the earlier text. This austere, remote poet has written a book that speaks to the reader with great intimacy and passion. To quote from Oliver's envoi: "No poet ever wrote a poem to dishonor life, to compromise high ideals, to scorn religious views, to demean hope or gratitude, to argue against tenderness, to place rancor before love, or to praise littleness of soul. Not one. Not ever."

Mary Oliver shines

Mary Oliver shines in this prose manual on the writing and issues of poetic composition. Her economy of words combines with an easy style to help an utter novice (like me) gain an understanding of the metric and rhyming tools involved. Clarity and suppleness of expression mark this book and I would recommend it to anyone who reads poetry or has an interest in trying their hand at writing.

What you may enjoy the most is that Mary does not wander all about the landscape of poetry, but maintains a steady course and uses many pretty little examples to illustrate the concepts. The book is not long but is one of those gems that you will enjoy diving into from time to times for some thoughtful reading on poetics. The author's personality shines through the words - and there is no pretense here, just someone who loves and lives through words.

Consider reading her Wild Geese if you haven't yet - a stunning beautiful piece of work.
