From Library Journal
The compilers, scholars who have studied and written about the Latino population in the United States, have put together an anthology of literary works dealing with the panorama of Latino writings in the United States. The selections range widely, from Cabeza de Vaca's 1542 description of the South to recent excerpts from Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Mexican American authors. The collection is primarily literary though it does include some historical, autobiographical, and essay excerpts. It offers what would be expected in this type of anthology, with an occasional surprise, such as an excerpt from John Rechy's novel City of Night. Readers will be primarily college and university students, but this will also be of value to smaller public libraries with limited Latino collections. From Booklist
Anthologies of Latino literature abound, and rightly so, but most focus on contemporary authors. Augenbraum and Olmos dig deeper, tracing the roots of this vibrant literary tradition all the way back to the mid-sixteenth century. They have selected strikingly effective works of history, memoirs, letters, essays, poetry, drama, and fiction, including texts translated into English for the first time, creating a broad range of voices and perspectives. The volume begins with Alva Nunez Cabeza de Vaca's Account, a chronicle of a disastrous 1527 expedition in the Southwest that is emblematic of all encounters between Spanish conquistadores and the indigenous peoples of the Americas. This powerful piece serves as the anthology's overture, and establishes Latino literature's key cultural and political themes. Other compelling and enlightening offerings include works by William Carlos Williams, a poet whose Puerto Rican heritage has rarely been considered integral to his poetic innovations; novelist John Rechy; Cleofas Jaramillo, a descendent of hispano pioneers; and a host of remarkable Latino writers prominent in decades past but overlooked in recent compilations. It's about time (READ THIS ANTHOLOGY!!!)...
By A Customer
This book gave birth to my interest in Latino literature. An absolute must for the literature section of any high school library, for any Latinos or for any one with a love of literature. As close to my own heart as African-American literature. Details the struggle of Latinos with short stories and poetry, that begins at the heart of the Latino conscience. It is time for them to be heard..... Truly among the best in Latino lit.

Incredible Survey of Latina/o Literature the US
By Paul T. Corrigan
The Latino Reader provides a wonderful selection of poetry, fiction, autobiography, and other sorts of writing, spanning from the earliest encounters between Spanish and the indigenous people of what would become the United States to contemporary Latina/o writers in this country. And yet the book is short enough to be read in its entirety, something anthologies often do not accomplish. Each selection includes a helpful introduction by the editors.

The historical survey approach works well to establish the length and depth of Latina/o writers' participation in the literary history of the US. Anyone studying "American" Literature without reading the writers in this book isn't studying a representative slice of the literature of the United States.

At the same time, the quality of the writing gets stronger and stronger as the chronology moves forward. This affirms the editors' choice to focus most heavily on mid-twentieth-century writing—more than half of the work included (28 out of 52 writers) was published in the middle fifty years of the twentieth century (1934-1984)—but also leaves me wanting more work from the last thirty years. Indeed, given that book has become slightly dated (published in 1997), we can only hope for a second edition, bringing us closer to the present, including work from the last 20 years.

The editors, Harold Augenbraum and Margarite Fernández Olmos, have done us a great favor.

Great book that I wish we would have purchased before our son was 3.5. Instills creativity, curiosity, and allows for discussion. Great book on transportation and culture. This is a lift a flap book that would be good for younger children but, it also carries over to older kids as the answer to "how do you get there" is under the flap. This makes them think/remember the how, when, where, and why of the book!

A very simple yet fun fold-out book that asks a simple question "how do you get there?". An engaging story by the author of the "Curious George" series on different modes of transportation. I've used it in my classroom to introduce our unit on "things with wheels" and always can find something that fascinates and delights my students.

In the thirteenth century, Sundiata overcame physical handicaps, social disgrace, and strong opposition to rule the West African trading empire of Mali.

From Publishers Weekly
A 13th-century prince overcomes physical infirmities and exile to rule Mali; of the artist's "stunning" cut-paper collages, PW said, "Historically accurate images are sharp without starkness, expressive of raw power and delicate fragility by turns." Ages 5-9.
Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-- An appealing biography of Sundiata, credited as the founder of the Mali empire. A lengthy author's note informs readers as to how little firsthand information on the topic is available, and that what is known has been handed down orally by griots , or African storytellers. Therefore, the narrative has the distinctive, if somewhat mystical, flow of an oral history. Sundiata neither walks nor speaks for the first seven years of his life, but is still named heir over his older brother. Regardless of the pronouncement, following the king's death, Sundiata and his mother are forced into exile. How the Lion King of Mali defeats his enemies and becomes the rightful ruler makes for an exciting tale. Wisniewski's characteristic artwork (vivid colored paper designs that have been intricately cut, arranged, mounted, and then photographed) add to the drama of the tale and are consistent with the folkloric tone. The characters have personality and vitality, and the setting has a texture and richness that heightens climactic moments of the story. Neither straightforward biography nor folktale, this is an interesting combination of the two. While some younger listeners may have difficulty following the somewhat choppy nature of the narrative as years fly by between the major events, older children will appreciate both the flavor and intrigue. All in all, another fine effort from a talented author/illustrator. --Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, NY

Cheers for the Real Lion King
By Chris Fung
Anyone who wants to introduce a child (or even someone who is not so young) to the REAL glories of ancient Africa could do a lot worse than start with this book.
Beautifully illustrated, and simply written it retells the life of the great culture hero Sunjata (variously spelled Sundiata, Son-Jara or other ways depending on the language and inclination of the translator).
According to the story, Sunjata defeated the sorcerer-king Suma'oro Kante and liberated the Manding people (of modern day Guinea, Mali, plus parts of Senegal, Gambia, Cote D'Ivoire and Burkina Faso) wielding them together into a great empire in the mid 13th century. To modern Manding poeple, Sunjata is roughly equivalent in stature to Abraham Lincoln, Moses or the first Qin Emperor.
This version is very close to the original tale as told by the griots of west Africa (check out D.T. Niane's "Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali" for a traditional telling of the story or, for the really adventurous, D.W. Johnson and Fa-Digi Cissoko's scholarly rendition "Son-Jara: An African Epic"). A sung version of part of the Sunjata fassa (epic praise poem) can be found on the CD "An Be Kelen (We are One): Griot Music from Mali" also available on Amazon.
Sunjata's story includes sorcery, prodigious battles, and the triumph of nobility over gossip and envy. For modern readers, an especially powerful feature is the famous story of Sunjata overcoming childhood disability (he is crippled and -in some versions, unable to talk) to become the leader of the Malian people.
One final critical point: While Wisniewski's version is fairly faithful to the original, it should be pointed out that key secondary figures (such as Sunjata's mother Sogolon Keju, his sister Nana Triban, Fran Camara (the king of the Blacksmith clan), and above all, Sunjata's griot Bala Fasseke Kouyate) are given little mention. Thus it replicates a western emphasis on key individuals rather than stressing the importance of each of the various segments of Manding society (men, women, siblings, parents, warriors, traders, sorcerers, griots, blacksmiths, farmers)which was an essential point in the original story.
This is a beautiful, skillfully-rendered book on an exciting topic. Sunjata belongs with the Viking Sagas and the Knights of the Round Table as a key example of world literature. Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

A West African hero
By Mary Josefina Cade
I ordered this book for some children, dear to my heart, who have a West African heritage. Once it arrived I ordered another for myself. The illustrations are outstandingly beautiful and inspirational as is the story of Sundiata, the sickly boy who grows to be a powerful king. Unfortunately the beauty of the colours can't be seen in the cover as shown on the Amazon shop front. The picture appears to have been misted over in some strange way.

I googled the artist/writer David Wisniewski and was extremely sorry to discover that he died in 2002. On the evidence of 'Sundiata' he was amazingly talented and I wish he was still here to produce more books. Luckily I found that other books created by him were still available, so have ordered those as well!

The West African griot culture is an important part of the story of Sundiata. Griots were and remain the keepers of wisdom at the centre of an oral tradition. David Wisniewski creates wonderful pictures of the king's court and of a griot, Sundiata's teacher, from whom he is to learn 'the history of your ancestors and the laws of this life.' We also see pictures of the West African harp-lute, the kora, the musical instrument most associated with these teachers at the present time.

Myths, legends and fairy tales often contain the greatest wisdom. I especially enjoyed the scene where, encouraged by his griot teacher, the child Sundiata finally learns to stand up. The beginning of the making of a Lion King. This book would be an interesting present for any child, but especially, of course, for those who live in or have ties with West Africa.

From Publishers Weekly
This, the eighth edition of the annual anthology of the best sports articles culled from more than 300 sports and general interest periodicals, includes a broad selection covering almost every sport from bird watching to ultra-marathons. The best pieces, not surprisingly, are the more personal accounts. In "Blond and Sand," Tony Hendra recounts his failed efforts to interview the famed female bullfighter, Christina Sanchez. He's seen Sanchez in the ring and longs for the chance; "for a few moments, I actually wanted to be a 1,200 pound mountain of mad, black muscle armed with two-foot-long ice-pick horns and see--against all odds--if I couldn't tag her. I know. Sick." Unfortunately, Sanchez keeps canceling their appointments so Hendra must return home without having met his goddess. Writing about the more pedestrian sport of soccer in "The Soccer Parents," Susan Sterling perfectly captures the dedication and enthusiasm of the parents as well as the young girls learning how strong they can be, even when they're losing their match. Other particularly effective pieces include one on tennis player Venus Williams by Linda Robertson and others on quirkier subjects, like Gary Smith's "A Delicate Balance," about the Guerrero circus performers, or Tad Friend's account of harrijasotzaile, or stone lifting, a Basque pastime about which one champion tersely notes, "An Italian man with the same muscles can't pick up our stones--because he has no reason to." Littlefield and Stout have combined to come up with a quirky, personal and first-rate collection for spectators and participants alike.

Copyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From Library Journal
Since 1991, this yearly collection has mixed the work of the usual suspects with unknown surprises?the best of the larger glossies with less-celebrated regional reporting. Guest editor Littlefield (Keepers, LJ 8/98) has mercifully chosen slightly fewer Tiger Woods pieces than last year's Tiger-heavy gathering while also picking another funny and original bullfighting piece by Tony Hendra. In "Blonde and Sand," Hendra turns all of the sport's macho-phallic cliches upside down while pondering the sexual significance of Spain's first woman matador; in "The Hit King," Scott Raab captures the prideful, shabby exile of the great Pete Rose; David Remnick's "Kid Dynamite Blows Up" is the most drolly nuanced account of the Tyson-Holyfield rematch in Las Vegas; Elwood Reid tells the painful story of his wrecked-up football body in "My Body, My Weapon, My Shame"; and David James Duncan sings the unlikely praises of "Bird-Watching as a Blood Sport." Although this anthology is never as good as you want it to be, it's recommended for large sports and essay colections.?Nathan Ward, "Library Journal"

Story of human struggle for identity and manhood.
By A Customer
Hurray for Moehringer! I bought this book for my dad- and avid sports fan and reader- and found myself enthralled in this particular story. I'm not a sports fan myself- which has always created a gap in my relationship with my father; but the human struggle for identity- and manhood- so clear and crisp and beautifully written has given me a new understanding of sports- and my father.

Excellent collection
By A Customer
The Moehringer, Hendra, Remnick, and Sterling pieces are standouts, but almost all the pieces sparkle with originality, integrity, and wit. It's particularly nice to see Sterling's "Soccer Parents" included alongside more standard fare, since it's somewhat experimental. Sterling has a lyrical voice and a sharp eye for detail; one hopes to hear more from her in the future.

A Real Disappointment!
By A Customer
I highly doubt this is the best sportswriting of 1998! Littlefield picks two mediocre efforts by Charlie Pierce, and neglects the superb '98 writings of S.I.'s Steve Rushin and Franz Lidz. One has to wonder if a sort of reverse "race card" has been played here. This series grows increasingly mediocre. You'd be better off reading Rushin's great "Road Swing" and Lidz's astonishing "Unstrung Heroes."

Made For A College Student, But Great For High Schoolers
By A Customer
This rather large book is great for those taking the Advanced placement European history exam. It is clear and concise. Its content is rather wordy but it includes many topics in each subject. For example, in the Chapter of the Rennaissance, it shows what the men were doing and the women's role in that time period. It also adds details about major battles, important writers and artist of that time period. The Ap European Exam includes a lot of this imformation that will surely be found in this book. I liked the book because of its complete source of information pertaining to the AP european exam. If you want a great score on the exam this book is for you. The study guide made for this book is also a great outline and preview to each chapter and is very helpful in taking the test.

Along the Edge of America, by Peter Jenkins

The best-selling author and walker Peter Jenkins, landlubber par excellence, now takes to the waves and explores, as only he can, a part of America rich in history, mystery, and lore: from the Florida Keys to the Mexican border, by way of the Everglades, the treacherous "jungle woods," genteel southern homesteads, the Cajun marshlands, and Texas's coastal cattle country. It's a riveting encounter with hardy, resourceful, colorful - and occasionally dangerous - characters who have one thing in common: a fierce love for their world of wind and water and sun, a world that Jenkins brings uniquely to life.

Amazon.com Review
In the past, Peter Jenkins' explorations (The Walk West, A Walk Across America, The Road Unseen) have been confined to land, but now Jenkins takes to the watery edge of the Gulf Coast, traveling in a 25-foot cruiser from the Florida Keys to Texas cattle country. Jenkins's riveting storytelling is all the more fascinating because his adventure is not just a paean to dare-devil accomplishments. Jenkins explains from the start that this trip was meant to renew the confidence he'd had before a bad divorce laid him low. But while he rediscovers his zest for life, he also learns how to operate a boat, navigate a storm, and avoid getting hijacked--all the while sharing the stories of the individuals he meets, from the alligator-wrestling Parker brothers to Mr. James Bloodworth and Bloodworth's Drugstore, where you can still get a hand-scooped milkshake for $1.15. Jenkins relates a great tale, with honesty, humor, and a fine ear for language.

From Library Journal
At 22, Jenkins set out on a six-year walk across the country. It was a journey full of new people, places, and ideas, and it became a journey of self-discovery. His account of it (A Walk Across America, 1979) launched a successful writing career. Now nearing 40 and plagued by mid-life ennui, Jenkins once again set out, this time piloting a 25-foot boat along 1600 miles of Gulf Coast from the Florida keys to the mouth of the Rio Grande. During the two-year trip he found a startling array of intriguing characters and parts of America that few of us will ever see. The reader is also pleased that, once again, the author found himself. A travel book and more, this is recommended for all public libraries.?Jim Burns, Ottumwa, Ia.

forced adventure
By bob
I enjoyed the book, though I had some problems with it. These had nothing to do with Jenkins' writing, which was superb. Rather, the whole "adventure" he writes about seems to have been orchestrated simply so that he could write a book about it. Unlike "A Walk Across America" which was written as an afterthought (since he planned his walk for its own sake, not because he wanted to write about it), "Along the Edge" seems a bit forced. Though he gives reasons for wanting to check out the coast, we can see that he was just looking for a unique adventure that he could write about.
Yes, I agree that this is what he does for a living, and why shouldn't he seek out another adventure? But this one lacked the magic of his other adventures. That said, most of the people he met in this book have fascinating stories to tell. The book is definitely worth reading--even if it takes some 80 pages of describing his preparations and training before he actually sets off.

Not quite the Walk Across America book
By lor369
This book didn't seem quite up to the standard that the "Walk Across America" book was. This book seemed kind of dry, a bit forced. I felt that it went into too much detail about his preparations, the actual sailing experience, etc. This was great if you are interested in sailing, but I would have preferred to have him expand a little more about his relationships with the people he met along away, like he did in "Walk Across America".
There were some things that he didn't go into detail enough on. For instance, what all happened to his first marriage that resulted in the divorce and his depression? I would have liked to hear more about his current family. He talked about bringing his family on his trip, but there wasn't much mentioned about them. There was little mentioned about his boys, nothing that I recall about his daughter from his first marriage. He did talk a little about his dad, but when he mentioned that his dad came with him on the boat a 2nd time, he didn't expand at all on that experience. And he didn't expand much on his experience with his wife and younger daughter being with him toward the beginning of the trip.
He also mentioned coming to Christian faith in his "Walk Across America book". But again, that was barely mentioned in this book. Did he lose that faith?
It was interesting hearing about some of the people he met on his trip and about life in the southern US along the coast. And this book may be of interest for someone really interested in sailing. But it didn't quite hold my interest like "Walk Across America".

Peter Jenkins discovers people and places in the Gulf states
By mattson10@earthlink.net
In his book,ALONG THE EDGE OF AMERICA, Peter Jenkins tells us he has bought a boat. He and Warren Norville, a retired naval commander, stare at the 25-foot Grady White tied up at the dock.
We can read their thoughts. Peter looks at the boat and wonders what in the world he is getting into. Warren, who is to be his teacher, has the same thought as he sees the bewildered look on Peter's face. Casting aside their fears and doubts, Norville grabs the wheel and heads out to sea. Peter, quite pale, stares at the horizon.
Later, much later, Peter feels comfortable at the helm. He takes us with him as he and his boat, the Cooper, takes us along the Gulf Coast. We explore uninhabited islands, little-known bays and inlets. We look over his shoulder as he guides the Cooper up quiet rivers, where the only sounds are those of sea and shore birds calling to each other. They are quiet, exciting trips.
Page after page, we get to know the people Peter meets. He expores relationships between islanders and off-islanders, villagers and city dwellers, husbands and wives. A personal relationship is also explored when Peter's father joins him for a week of cruising. That relationship changes, like a Gulf weather report, from "cloudy and cool" to "warm and sunny", The week that began with the obligatory handshake ended with a warm embrace. Both of them agreed that the bright sun makes your eyes water.....
Exciting and always thought-provoking the book teaches us much about our country and the people that are its foundation. We become their friends. Peter and his boat, the Cooper, become our friends as well. As we near the end of the book, we slow our reading. We savor each word and phrase. Before we close the book, we reach out and embrace the people we have met along the watery way. We wave good-bye to them. We will remember them as a friend should, with love and respect.
