About the Author
Merry Wiesner-Hanks (Chair, Department of History, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee) received her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1979. She has published WORKING WOMEN IN RENAISSANCE GERMANY (Rutgers, 1986) as well as numerous articles on women and the Reformation and urban social history. She is co-author of DISCOVERING THE GLOBAL PAST (2012), DISCOVERING THE WESTERN PAST (2008), DISCOVERING THE MEDIEVAL PAST (2003), DISCOVERING THE ANCIENT PAST (2005), DISCOVERING THE TWENTIETH-CENTURY WORLD (2005), and BECOMING VISIBLE: WOMEN IN EUROPEAN HISTORY (1998). Grade 5-8-In 1879, Robert Louis Stevenson journeyed from Scotland across the Atlantic and then by train across the United States to join the woman he loved in Monterey, California. Murphy has drawn from the writer's journal to provide a fresh, primary-source account of transcontinental train travel at that time. Choosing by necessity the cheapest passage, Stevenson traveled with other newcomers to the U.S. who had not yet reached their final destination. He describes his companions, the passing countryside, the interior of the railroad cars, and daily life aboard a train. Into these journal entries, Murphy has woven meticulously researched, absorbing accounts of the building of the railroad and its effect on the territory it crossed: the disruption and destruction of Native American life, the slaughter of the buffalo, accidents, the development of the Pullman car, the towns that quickly came and vanished as the construction crews moved on, the snowsheds built to protect the trains in the Sierra Nevada mountains. Abundant, carefully selected period photographs, engravings, and lithographs are every bit as intriguing as the text. Appended is a lengthy bibliography with some original source material. This work supplements Leonard Everett Fisher's more extensive Tracks Across America (Holiday, 1992); it is a readable and valuable contribution to literature concerning expansion into the American West.

Gr. 5 and up. As he did in The Boys' War (1990) and The Long Road to Gettysburg (1992), Murphy draws on memoirs and letters to humanize history. This time his main source is the journal of the great writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who traveled in 1879 from Scotland to the woman he loved in California, first on a crowded boat and then on a series of crammed, painfully uncomfortable trains on the transcontinental railroad. Murphy weaves together Stevenson's perilous journey with a general history of the railroad--how it was planned and built, who built it, what it was like to ride it if you were rich and if you were poor, and how it changed the country and those who lived there. Murphy's style is plain: facts and feelings tell a compelling story of adventure and failure, courage and cruelty, enrichment and oppression. The handsome book's design includes lots of white space, two endpaper maps, and many prints, drawings, and black-and-white photographs, carefully captioned to make you pore over the details. The direct quotations from Stevenson show him as observer and participant. This was before he became famous, and he identifies with the emigrants' painful struggle as well as their hope. He's excited by the diversity in America (he loves the place names that express how "all times, races, and languages have brought their contribution"); at the same time, he's appalled at the treatment of Native Americans ("I was ashamed for the thing we call civilization"). Murphy provides no direct documentation (often the source is "one passenger recalled," "some historians have speculated"), but the very long bibliography will be a starting point for those stimulated to read further. The 19th century's transcontinental railroads, explored via a delightfully effective narrative device: tracing the 1879 journey of Robert Louis Stevenson, who, at 29, was making an as- swift-as-possible journey from Edinburgh to Monterey, California, where his beloved Fanny was desperately ill. Murphy draws extensively on Stevenson's own account of his journey, by boat and a succession of trains of varying speed and discomfort, paraphrasing the gist of his experiences and including splendid quotes revealing RLS as a sharp observer--and extraordinarily gifted reporter--with an open mind and an unusually humane attitude toward people of all sorts. Meanwhile, in well- integrated tangents, Murphy discusses related topics: the building of the railroad, including the roles of different ethnic groups; the prevalence of collisions like one that delayed RLS's train; various immigrant groups; the real nature of the ``Wild West.'' He ends with the joyful reunion (Fanny has recovered) and a summary of RLS's brief later life. A fascinating, imaginatively structured account that brings the experience vividly to life in all its detail: history at its best. Excellent book

This is a short easy and fun history book that blends excerpts Robert Louis Stevenson's "Amateur Emigrant" and "Across the Plains" with Jim Murphy's prose and descriptions. I was expecting a kids book but far from it - while not academic or even pretentiously so, it's on par with a PBS episode of "American Experience" and reminds me of how fun history can be. The historical photo's are excellent, numerous and tightly connected to the text. Highly recommended for anyone interested in RLS, American history and the immigrant experience of the late 19th century. Jim Murphy has written about a dozen books like this including some Newbury award winners, hope to read some more, the language and prose is easy and leaves a strong impression of time and place, very enjoyable.

Thoroughly entertaining and educational

This is a thoroughly entertaining and educational, short book, based on the author Robert Louis Stevenson's diary of his trans-oceanic and trans-continental trip in 1879 (years before he became famous and could afford higher-class accomodations). The many hardships and discomforts of travel during all extremes of weather and geographic terrain - not to mention the frequent fatal wrecks - and the indignities suffered by European immigrants, native Americans, Chinese, and the heroic construction laborers, are all described. The carefully selected illustrations add greatly to the understanding, and perfectly complement the text.

Page 45 has a minor ERROR - it says Davy Crockett rode a train in 1820 (but that is before trains were even invented). Mr. Murphy might also have mentioned how the Fred Harvey restaurants years later, improved on the passenger dining experience: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fred_Harvey_Company .

Another entertaining and enlightening book I recommend for understanding the same American historical period, is "The Good Old Days: they were Terrible" by Otto Bettman, which is similarly illustrated.

Across America on an Emigrant Train.

This was a wonderful over view of the hardships endured by our ancestors as they made their way west. There is not really to much information out there about the emigrant trains and this one helped reinforce my own research of my own Grandfather's trip to the west coast with his family from West Virginia as a boy.

Highly recomend for anyone interested in Pioneer times and life.

Very detailed book

Very good book with lots of detail. The pictures are a bit dated but decent enough for the job. I supplement this with a book that gives more physical description of the associated minerals and environment of occurrence. This goes into chemical and crystallographic detail very well.

With Heavy Heart I Ding This Edition Please Read Why!

As a geology student studying mineral identification I looked long and hard at every R&M book I could find and came to the conclusion the 4th edition of this work is the best. Why not the 5th? While it has better photographs for the most part it's not cross referenced. So if you look up Actinolite and go to the plate with the image it has no reference to the text about the mineral! the 4th DOES! Sounds small but if your doing a lot of work the page flipping gets tiresome and it was such an easy thing to do....Also the section on rocks is weaker in the 5th.

Also as mentioned in other reviews the binding is subpar and not worthy of a Field Manual. Cheap paperback with poor type set as compared with the 4th. Just harder to read. The 4th has the classic field manual feel to it and one has confidence it wont self destruct in a ruck sack on a collecting trip.

The color photos are a slight improvement but don't suffice for sharp detail and please note color is a poor indicator of minerals. Sure a great color image would be wonderful but a B&W that highlights the important detail will serve us better.

Much of the Pough text seems in tact and is the lone saving grace! the descriptions are a great help to my understanding and far and away the best out there.

I know these sound like minor complaints but I nail with one star to hopefully rattle the publishers cage and print a new permanent edition worthy of Dr. Pough's effort. I found a similar recent Peterson Guide to medicinal plants that have nice sewn flex binding for $2 more than the R&M book! The current Bird guide has the classic type set. What has AIDS done to us gay men? is a question that can only be answered one gay man at a time. Decrying New Age Bunnies who claim that AIDS is the best thing that ever happened to them, Hardy asserts that if there is redemption in living with HIV, it is only in determining that something good can be constructed in the midst of great evil, and it can only be personal. With an eclectic mix of memoir, social history, diatribe, journalism and cultural criticism, he defends and celebrates the sex-positive ways gay men have continued to connect in the face of an ongoing catastrophe. Hardy, who died in a mountaineering accident before AIDS could kill him, believed HIV is not the enemy of sex; its the antagonist of love, and that even against death, revolution can be joyful. At its most incisive, the book documents AIDSs great evil, governmental and institutional inaction and the loss of most of a generation of gay men... who would have told the rest of us how to grow old, how to be adult. Hardy was a first-rate journalist whose honesty and intelligence are most evident in his personal history, particularly his account of a Dutch lovers state-sanctioned euthanasia. The greatest strength of the book is in its portraiture and reminiscences. Although Hardy left this manuscript incomplete, editor David Groff has done an excellent job of preserving the work of an important writer.

Hardy was a gay liberation pioneer, and like most of them, he got AIDS. But he died in a mountaineering accident, not of AIDS, leaving this book to be finished from his notes and in his voice by Groff, as the latter explains in a splendid introduction-cum-eulogy. The book complains about AIDS and the lagging response to it, but, more important, it restates the original gay lib ideal of a society of brothers (and sisters) developed, as the last chapter's title puts it, "Beyond the Culture of Love" --specifically, romantic and monogamous love. The binding forces in such a society would be sexual desire and its unhindered fulfillment. Love, now held captive by marriage, would be directed instead to all fellow humans and to the planet. AIDS deflected gay liberation from that vision, Hardy thought. Besides enriching his arguments with amusing, instructive, and moving personal stories, Hardy states the gay lib position and the AIDS activists' case against the medical-scientific establishment more stylishly and cogently and less inflammatorily and defensively than any of his predecessors has. Among recent books by gay men, defining gay male identity under the shadow of AIDS, these hard-edged essays stand out for their persisting faith in the redemptive power of self-determined sexual expressiveness. Hardy, a much published journalist and essayist in the gay community, died in a mountain-climbing accident before he could complete the seven essays assembled here. His friend, David Groff (formerly an editor with Crown), finished the book and edited it for publication. Hardy's unargued premise is that `' `gay' is the construction of identity through sexual relations.'' Out of this beginning, the themes of the essays unfold and the tone that characterizes them, reminiscent of Nietzsche, of tragic, iconoclastic heroism. For if gay identity is liberated homosexual desire, then AIDS has all but squashed it; hence the crisis of desirereally of identitythat supplies the title. How should gay men behave, especially the HIV-positive among them (which included Hardy), when a viral accident of nature undermines their identity? They can: protest and subvert the slow response of medical science to their plight (this response comes in the longest and least persuasive chapter); practice imaginatively reconceived safer sex; opt to dieif the virus has advanced too painfully far within themas Hardy touchingly shows a friend do in Holland, where physician-assisted suicide is legal; work to memorialize themselves across time (the model for which, in Hardy's eyes, is not the AIDS quilt but annihilated, medieval French heretics, the Albigensians, whose memory still survives in southern France). What Hardy commends in all these choices is the free and self-determining spirit in which they are made. What does not pass muster is capitulations to ideas foreign and false to gay male identity, as Hardy conceives it, such as long-term relations patterned on heterosexual marriage or resigned acceptances of death. Reality Is Not Acceptance, But Rage.

I have read this book and realized that this is the most brutal honest book that I have ever read on the AIDS Crisis. The problem of informing people who are not PWA's or Gay( Such as myself)is that you sometimes do not get the full picture. However, this is a little known gem that should be read by anyone that has to involuntarily change there lifestyle and bury so many friends in such a short time.

Shirley Abbott is the author of Womenfolks: Growing Up Down South and The Bookmaker's Daughter: A Memory Unbound, which was a New York Times Notable Book. Born and raised in Hot Springs, Arkansas, she now lives in New York and Massachusetts.

I was particularly disappointed with her account of the southern male- a dimwitted

Perhaps my criticism comes from being a generation or two later than the ones described in the text or possibly from being an Arkansan myself, but the book fell short for me. I was captivated at first by her descriptions of the southern women in her life, as they so closely resembled women from my own family, but the attraction soon waned for me when her obvious distain for the south could no longer be ignored. She details the lives of her ancestors but is careful bring the reader's attention to moments when her family is set apart from southern stereotypes, and while she correctly discounts the plantation lifestyle stereotype, she does nothing to discredit others unless it suits her. I was particularly disappointed with her account of the southern male- a dimwitted, alcoholic simpleton according to her, unless they have managed to "escape".
While I enjoyed this as a historical account, I worry for the many people who have read this thinking this is how all southern women are still being raised. The south with its many flaws is ever-changing, even if not up to the standards of mainstream society. I would caution future readers to be mindful of when this was written and to not judge all southern women by this standard.

Part Memoir, Part History

Shirley Abbott has truly captured the southern female experience, both past and present. Her vivid descriptions of her own family and her mother are the best parts of this book. The historical accounts of women from antebellum times to present are interesting, though not quite as engrossing as her own recollections. It is impossible not to regret the passing of an era in the south as one reads this book and realizes the complexities of women who were so often deemed simple hillbillies. Many women, like myself, who grew up in small southerns towns will recognize their own experiences as they follow the author's. I know I did. On occasion, Ms. Abbott wanders off into feminist interpretations that could get a little harsh. I didn't agree with all of her conclusions, but I really enjoyed reading this book.

Any Southern woman who has ever been tempted to transmogrify her prolific, feisty, cow-milking, chicken-plucking, garden-producing grandmothers into delicate, helpless ladies of the manor should read this book first. For in it, Shirley Abbott looks straight in the faces of the proud, independent, and powerful female descendants of the Scots-Irish migration to the Southern states and discovers something far more admirable than the Southern Belle.
In the process, she challenges such old-line interpretations of southern experience as that of W.J. Cash, who claimed the poor Scots-Irish immigrants who stepped off crowded ships at Charleston and Philadelphia fled inland in search of land that would permit them to become part of the English-American slave-holding, plantation-owning power structure of the Southern colonies. Nothing could be farther from the truth, Abbott argues convincingly: their experience had instilled in the Scots-Irish an abiding hatred of all things English, including the political and economic institutions the English established in centers like Charleston. These new immigrants preferred the terrifying, unexplored baclwoods, where they were free of English domination and what they conceived to be English decadence. The pioneer experience, reinforced by continuing poverty, a civil war, and the depredations of a occupying army only reinforced the pride and self-confidence these people brought with them to America.
In a well conceived study driven by her desire to place and understand her own poor, white, rural, and proud forebears, Abbott produces an elegant combination of memoir and cultural history. Her crystalline two-page account of the Scots-Irish trail to America is in itself worth the price of the book. And the memorable descriptions of the homes, tables, and characters of her Arkansas kinspeople demonstrate the consequences of that migration. For anyone wishing to understand Southern culture and southern women in particular, this small volume is a must-read. It takes the reader beyond stereotypes to a realistic picture of people whose lives are far more inspiring than that of any Belle, Sweet Potato Queen, or YaYa. I have spent my lifetime in the South and in the study of its literature and culture. Yet, I came away from this book with a deeper undersanding of the region and my own personal history in it.

About the Author
Harry Allard is the author of several hilarious books for children, including three books about Miss Nelson and four books about the Stupid family, all illustrated by James Marshall. He currently lives in Oaxaca, Mexico.

James Marshall (1942–1992) created dozens of exuberant and captivating books for children, including The Stupids, Miss Nelson Is Missing!, and the ever-popular George and Martha books. Before creating his canon of classic, hilarious children’s books, James Marshall played the viola, studied French, and received a master’s degree from Trinity College. He also doodled. It was the doodles, and the unforgettable characters that emerged from them, that led him to his life’s work as one of the finest creators of children’s books of the twentieth century. In 2007, James Marshall was posthumously awarded the Laura Ingalls Wilder medal for his lasting contribution to literature for children.
