The Perilous Journey of the Donner Party, by Marian Calabro

On April 14, 1846, the Donner Party set out from Springfield, Illinois, in search of a better life in the largely unsettled California territory. The trip started well but eventually questionable choices and infighting delayed pioneers' attempt to cross the Sierra Nevada until winter. As the impassable snows closed in and their supplies dwindled to nothing, the group faced an almost hopeless struggle for survival that would push some toward the final taboo of cannibalism. Nearly half the members of the Donner Party were children. This account, filled with selections from the survivors' letters and diaries, focuses on the children's experiences, making it uniquely compelling and accessible to young readers. Index, bibliography, chronology, group rosters, suggestions for further research.

Excellent Reading!!
By Michelle Mathiot
I'm not much of a history buff, but I have to teach my kids CA history this year. Once I started reading this book it was hard to put down. The thing that surprised me the most was how thoroughly readable it is. I didn't feel like I was reading a history textbook. The prose is well done, there are ample photos of the people involved and artifacts etc.,.. The only thing I would improve would be to include maybe one more map. But that isn't even worth complaining about. This book covers a gruesome and sad event in American history without being overly maudlin, grotesque or judgemental. Despite the elementary looking artwork on the front, it's not a book for children.

The Perilous Journey of the Donner Party

You think you've had "trubels"? Wait until you read this book. This story details the journey of several families, known as the Donner Party, as they travel from Springfield, Illinois to Sutter's Fort, California in the Spring of 1846. The author tells the story through the eyes of the children, detailing Virginia Reed's recording of the journey. This is a gripping story of the unbelievable determination of survival. The book is loaded with authentic pictures and diary entries. You won't believe the sacrifices these people made to settle unknown land in America. A great piece of historical work!

Reads better than a mystery!
By A Customer
What a great read! What a horrifying subject -- cannibalism! I found it difficult to believe that this book was shelved in the "children's section" of my local library, especially when I was reading how the survivors had to resort to eating the flesh of their dead fellow travelers or die of starvation.
After reading the whole book, I found the subject of cannibalism less horrifying than at first. This is not to say that I was brought around to accepting the practice of eating human flesh! It is more a tribute to the author for her very deft handling of her subject -- the Donner Party and their struggle for survival; their courage in their fight against Mother Nature. Last, but not least, my compliments to the author for her understanding that until we are in the "other person's shoes", we are not qualified to judge the actions of other people.
Definitely a book to be read by young people, but with adult guidance!

The Page Turner, by David Leavitt

At eighteen, Paul Porterfield's dream is to play the piano at the world's great concert halls, yet so far the closest he has come has been turning pages for his idol, Richard Kennington, a former piano prodigy on the cusp of middle age. Then, on vacation in Rome with his mother, Pamela, Paul encounters Kennington a second time. A love affair begins between the two - one that is complicated when Pamela misconstrues Kennington's attention toward her son as a sign of interest in her. Alarmed by the situation, Kennington flees Rome for New York, where Joseph Mansourian, his manager (and lover) of twenty-five years, awaits him; Paul, too, goes to New York to study at Juilliard. They do not see each other. Yet the brief affair will affect their lives in ways that neither could have predicted. "Why can't people have what they want?" It is around this question that David Leavitt's new novel so movingly pivots. By turns comic and heartbreaking, shrewd and intimate, The Page Turner testifies not only to the tenacity of the human spirit but to the resiliency of the human heart.

Amazon.com Review
David Leavitt's Arkansas was the surprise of his career: funny, sexy, and thematically adventurous, it was a complete break from his more traditional narratives. Now, in The Page Turner, Leavitt returns to the style and type of story that made him famous. Noted pianist Richard Kennington is a former child prodigy now entering middle age. While in Rome he meets and begins an affair with Paul Porterfield, a young man who is poised to follow in his professional footsteps. The affair is complicated by the fact that Pamela, Paul's mother, is also interested in Richard. The affair is short-lived, but the story--which might remind you of an updated version of a sophisticated 1940s Hollywood romance such as The Seventh Vail or Intermezzo--takes several startling turns when Richard, Paul, and Pamela discover the power of love and eroticism; it is more complicated then any of them imagined. Leavitt's tone, slyly serious and ironically romantic, makes The Page Turner a compelling and surprising read.

From Publishers Weekly
This flat novel of music, ambition and love is unfortunately not the enticing work-in-progress by the fictional "David Leavitt" in the far more accomplished and entertaining novella "The Term Paper Artist" (from the collection Arkansas). Eighteen-year-old Paul Porterfield hopes for a career as a classical pianist and is thrilled to achieve his "debut" turning pages for his idol, the vaguely van Cliburn-esque Richard Kennington. This would be the only intersection of their careers were it not for a coincidental encounter later that summer in Rome, where Paul and his philistine mother, Pamela, are on vacation. Mutually infatuated, Paul and Kennington carry on an affair unbeknownst to Pamela (who develops her own crush on Kennington). Kennington abruptly leaves because of an emotional crisis at home in New York (the beloved dachshund of his longtime manager and lover dies), but the summer fling spoils in Manhattan, as Paul (now at Julliard) faces his lack of talent and Kennington cracks under the middle-aged pressures of being a former child prodigy. Neither character's sketchy story, however, has much emotional weight. Only Pamela, one of Leavitt's characteristically strong maternal figures, transcends her stereotype. Her farcically frustrated ambitions barely keep up the tempo in this dubiously titled orchestration of tired themes. Author tour. (Apr.) FYI: Arkansas will be reissued simultaneously in Mariner paperback.

From Library Journal
Leavitt, in his first novel since the controversial While England Sleeps (Houghton, 1995), proves once again that he can accomplish much through his clean, spare narrative style. A master at creating the internal dither we experience when we misunderstand our surroundings, Leavitt relies on irony to explore the world of mismatched characters as they attempt to create, but mostly ruin, relationships. Paul Porterfield is the title character, an 18-year-old would-be pianist who is called upon to turn pages for his musical idol, the fortysomething Richard Kennington. They fall in love a few months later. Add to this mix Paul's mother, who also falls for Kennington, and Kennington's much older male lover of more than 20 years. Mistrust, abandonment, and betrayal abound, and each character knows all too well what those things are. But the hope for love is plentiful, and that is the substance of the novel. With each turn of the page, we uncover the mystery of love in the characters' lives as they experience it. Highly recommended for all fiction collections.?Roger W. Durbin, Univ. of Akron Libs., Ohio

An extremely thought provoking novel
By A Customer
As much as people criticize it for the structure of the novel, I feel that the overlying love story between Paul and Richard is extremely touching, they both truly embodies the typical teenager and his infatuation (dare I say love?) with the middle aged man who never seems to be able to commmit. As Paul's character develops, his innocence towards love and relationships can still be seen for his love of Richard. An extremely thought provoking novel......and touching.

A potentially good plot with an unwise pivot
By N. Wong
This novel by Leavitt has a potentially good plot as it provides space for portraying the psychology of a mother who is going to discover a homosexual relationship between her beloved son and the object of her own affection. However, the tone first half of the book does not match with the second half's. The first half focuses on the development homosexual relationship between the son and the pianist, and the second half suddenly explores the madness of the mother, and the novel at this stage is centred with the use of stream of the mother's consciouness, which consequently leads to a rather abrupt ending. Still, Virginia Woolf's works and Michael Cunningham's THE HOURS are the excellent examples explaining how to use the stream of consciousness to lead to a (post)modernist ending.

The whole that's less satisfying than the sum of its parts.
By A Customer
The book is excellent as a collection of sharp and sensitive observations of gay relationships, new and old, all of which spoke directly to me with a loud voice. Leavitt's writing edges towards poetry and like its title, I couldn't put it down. However, as a piece of storytelling, too many questions are left unanswered and the characters beg to be developed. The ending was abrupt, to say the least. Leavitt has written better novels (my favourite being While England Sleeps) but The Page Turner is still an enlightening experience for fans of one of the most eloquent writers of modern fiction - gay or otherwise.

The Blunder of the Rogues, by Tim Egan

With his trademark wit and wry sense of humor, Tim Egan spins a tale of a life of crime. The Rogues, a shamefully poor bowling team, distraught at their inability to do anything well, are seduced into a life of crime. At last they believe they have stumbled upon something they might just be good at. Lured further into the seedy underworld by Vincent the Goat and the Sheep Lady, they are persuaded to attempt a bank heist. But this goes awry and the four friends wind up in the slammer with seven years' hard labor, and plenty of time to think about the error of their ways. In his most hilarious work to date, Tim Egan once again deftly delivers his point with offbeat humor and delightful illustrations and leaves us with a happy, unexpected ending.

From Publishers Weekly
Egan, who honed his hard-boiled voice in Friday Night at Hodges' Cafe and Chestnut Cove, forays into tough-guy turf with this story of four decent fellows gone wrong. The suitably noir setting, subtly rendered in watercolor and ink, is a coastal town of quaint brick buildings and antique roadsters. The animal characters wear felt hats, vests and rumpled coats with a 1930s-era fashion flair. Narrator Skunk ("I'm actually a raccoon, but I guess I didn't bathe enough when I was younger and the nickname stuck") belongs to a bowling league called the Rogues, which includes a walrus, a gorilla and a cardsharp rat. Terrible bowlers all, the Rogues decide to form a gang instead. They start with such minor infractions as crossing against traffic lights and stealing hubcaps "because it's a crime and we need the practice." Things turn uglier when a conniving goat and a villainous ewe known as the Sheep Lady put them up to robbery. After cops (depicted as pigs) foil the Rogues' bank heist, the antiheroes land in the slammer. Via Skunk's gruff, Bogie-esque commentary, Egan shows how misdemeanors can escalate and how neophytes can be manipulated by experienced cons. The unsentimental plot, which goes from droll fun-and-games to a much more serious situation, forwards a distinct crime-doesn't-pay message. Egan challenges picture-book conventions, but with mixed results: an epilogue, which unconvincingly shows the repentant perps all grown up and in meaningful relationships, points to the difficulty of fusing grade-school entertainment with jaded adult hindsight. Ages 5-8.

From Kirkus Reviews
Egan's already strange universe (Distant Feathers, 1998, etc.) continues to expand with this weird and terrific story of a bowling team gone wrong. They are the Rogues, a motley band of creatures--raccoon, ape, rat, walrus--who are bad at bowling. One night, after a few particularly awful games, the frustrated ape kicks over a can of trash. It feels so good to all of them that they start down a path of subversive behavior: ``Crossing the street when the light said `Don't Walk.' Scaring pigeons. We felt dangerous.'' They encounter Vincent, who becomes their mentor, and the sheep lady, who trains them in the art of bank robbery. It's all a set-up; Vincent and the sheep lady go free, while the Rogues get seven years each in the slammer. Prison, though scary, does them good, and afterward the Rogues become prosperous and decent citizens of the community. Perhaps readers should just sit down and allow the barking unconventionality of this picture-book topic to wash over them. As ever, Egan's richly atmospheric artwork adds immeasurably to the story, evoking every reformed tough-guy movie ever made in plotting and narration, and just as classic. Review
A raccoon named Skunk and his losing bowling team decide to turn criminal and end up becoming pawns in a bank robbing scheme orchestrated by a clever goat and his partner, the ''sheep lady.'' Skunk's narrative, accompanied by ink and watercolor illustrations of the nattily dressed cohorts, re-creates the feel of an old-time gangster movie, but the story is only mildly amusing.

Off Our Rockers
By Elaine Smith
My two sons, 5 and 7, and I are hard core Tim Egan fans who simply cannot get enough of his dead-pan humor and wonderful mastery of the understated. All you need to know is that this book begins with the criminal arrest of the main characters and if that's not an unconventional jump-start to a childrens' story I don't know what is...We have favorite lines from every one of Tim Egan's books and shout them out to each other at appropriate moments. Blunder of the Rogues has given us, "The little old sheep lady was off her rocker. A fruitcake. A weird and scary little ball of wool." You'd be surprised how often this has served to encapsulate various moments in our daily lives. We give thanks there's someone as strange and original as Tim Egan out there writing for children (and the parents who read to them.) We never tire of Mr Egan and his unique voice.

Blunder of Sucess
By PD
I quite enjoyed this story. I read this book for a Children Literature class and found the book a good tool to show children that crime does not pay. The author had a nice hopeful ending to where the Rogues made a better decision after prision and become more productive with their lives.

Freeze!
By Clare L
We are ginormous fans of Tim Egan in this house, and Blunder is currently our favorite. My 4.5 year old son has been requesting it every night for the past week. A HUGE compliment. Egan never talks down to his little readers, but the themes here--you know: hooliganism, graffiti, assault, robbery--are, well, kind of adult. Certainly unusual for content for young readers. There is a lot of sophisticated, but extremely fun and deliciously descriptive, language, so you will likely find yourself explaining some words here and there. Thing is, it is such a great tale, my son loves the character's voices and he loves to pinpoint the moments when the motley crew of would-be criminals make the bad decisions that see them end up in [spoiler alert!] jail.

Throwaway Dads: The Myths and Barriers That Keep Men from Being the Fathers They Want to Be, by Ross Parke, Armin Brott

Are fathers really important? Of course they are. Yet we as a society have wittingly and unwittingly built nearly insurmountable barriers that restrict men's involvement with their children and families. In Throwaway Dads, a noted researcher on fatherhood and a leading author on the art of being a father explode the myths of neglectful, uninterested, abusive, deadbeat, and lazy dads with real-life studies and statistics. They explain why the largely negative portrayal of fathers in books, movies, and on television is both inaccurate and harmful, training young boys and girls to see men as having little or no role in the family. They also examine in balanced fashion the dubious achievements of both the men's and women's movements in reevaluating the roles of both sexes. Complete with proposals for steps that men, women, employers, the medical community, the media, and the government can take to promote men's involvement in their children's lives, Ross Parke and Armin Brott offer a comprehensive look at how our entire society can experience the benefits and joys of active fatherhood.

Amazon.com Review
Even if we don't believe in the myth of Ward Cleaver and other old TV dads any more, most of us aren't really sure what to believe instead. Evidence is mounting that our confusion about fatherhood is affecting our children and helping to create a climate of lowered expectations and poor self-esteem. Throwaway Dads breaks down many of the barriers men must confront to become good fathers, and suggests new ways in which men, women, and our culture can view this role in the hope of turning the disturbing trend around and raising happier, healthier kids.

Psychologist Ross Parke and parenting writer Armin A. Brott combine research on fatherhood with practical alternatives to current thinking to create a feisty, thought-provoking read. Why do most media images of fathers show them as incompetent, lazy, or frightening? Studies suggest that these stereotypes are far from reality but stick in our minds nonetheless, creating a difficult environment for men to nurture children. In fact, say Parke and Brott, most men are doing their best in the absence of formal guidelines, and paternal involvement is crucial for children to develop independence, social skills, and school performance. By encouraging "parenting partnerships" and new images of men as concerned, active parents, the authors hope to reverse our current direction and make the concept of throwaway dads a thing of the past. --Rob Lightner

From Publishers Weekly
Parke, a psychologist, and Brott, author of The Expectant Father and other books on fatherhood, want to set the record straight: the entire world, they say, is against fathers. Government, cheered on by the media, throws up barriers at every turn. Women are the worst: protective of their power, they have conspired to keep men from their children, even defining the paternal role as purely biological. These accusations, like many of the authors' sweeping generalizations, harbor grains of truth, but the tone of this book is absurdly adversarial. Feminists such as French, Faludi, Brownmiller et al., contend Parke and Brott, have convinced us that the greatest threat to our children may well be their fathers. They claim that a hostile society has ghettoized fathers into types: biologically unfit, dangerous, deadbeats or useless. Arguably, welfare laws have disenfranchised many fathers; accusations of sexual abuse are sometimes used against dads without foundation in custody cases; and children raised by both a mother and a father do, according to some studies, statistically have a better chance at better lives. But Parke and Brott present their argument as new, when, in fact, Americans of diverse conviction have been making the case for dads for some time?whether it's the Christian men's Promise Keepers movement, the Nation of Islam's Million-Man March or working parents lobbying for paternal leave. Thoughtful... Thought Provoking... Truthful...
By Timothy Barden
Well researched and written in a similar voice as Sanford Braver and Diane O'Connell's "Divorced Dads : Shattering the Myths", Park and Brott's "Throwaway Dads" should be considered a necessary companion volume. "Throwaway Dads" adds to the latter in many important ways. It includes a full discussion of the sociopolitical origins of the current climate of "dad bashing", as well as a "eye's open" criticism of the inability of the fractured factions of men's and father's rights organizations to do anything effective to counter it thus far.
Parents and policy makers should read this book while thinking about the climate of paradox, inequity and, often outright hatred of fathers we have created. A climate that await our own sons. All the inequities in the treatment of fathers currently found in the media, courts, state and federal government agencies will likely be visited upon them too, once they become fathers. The authors offer many suggestions for changes to the legal and political climate that would serve to reposition fathers as significant, valuable and necessary partners in parenthood. This book is a well written addition to discussion of the topic.
While reading this book at the local coffee house, I witnessed the following exchange between two women in their early twenties. An exchange that illustrates one of "Throwaway Dads" basic premises. That, with the exception of financial support, father's are now oftentimes extraneous. I was at the same time, shocked and saddened.
Woman One (ecstatic) - "I'm pregnant!"
Woman Two (also excited) - "Really... Do you know who's it is?"
Woman One (more ecstatic) - "No!"
Woman Two - "Do you care???"
Woman One (even more ecstatic) - "No!"
It was a clear illustration of how little perceived value fathers have to many people today. Especially those who have grown up within a culture that dismisses so readily their value. This woman clearly did not perceive any value in her child knowing who her father is, let alone having him in her life.
While considering the scene I had just witnessed, a play on the phrase "Out of sight, Out of mind" came to mind. "Out of Sight (Invisible), Out of Mind (Insanity)"... "Invisible, Insanity".
We have made our fathers "Invisible", and it is... "Insanity".

Parke and Brott have captured the essence of Fatherlessness.
By Gerald L. Rowles, Ph.D.
For the millions of fathers who have experienced the intimacy of involved fatherhood, and its subsequent loss through divorce, this book will give them the validation they can find in few other places. Throwaway Dads stridently touches a nerve that neither Blankenhorn (Fatherless America) nor Popenoe (Life Without Father) have fully explored. Expanding on Sanford Braver (Divorced Dads), Throwaway Dads takes us another step closer to understanding the degree to which the contemporary myth of the unfeeling, macho, uninvolved, "deadbeat", if not "dangerous" dad belies the frequent, tragic-reality of the post-divorce, disenfranchised, "visiting father."
And, notably, it courageously exposes the social engineering which decimated the families caught up in the wake of the "Great Society" - and the genesis of Braver's "driven-away" dads.
In this case, you can tell a book by its cover.

Thank You for Your Insight
By Michael G. DeFilippo
In my time of need, this book opened my eyes to what society really thinks of divorced and single dads. I knew, after reading this book, that it wasn't anything I was or wasn't doing; it was simply the way the system works. I thank these two wonderful authors for their time and effort in researching and writing a book that I will never give away. Thank you so much for confirming that I am the good father I knew I was.

CONCISE and easy to use MLA how-to book
By Janice aboard Seaweed
Bought for my Kidlet, she's found it a wonderful guidebook to writing MLA style papers. We looked at the full-version (over 200 pages) and it was, quite frankly, overwhelming.
This one though, we have found to have all the information she requires to write decent papers for her college professors. Thus far, all A's too! I have recommended it to my nieces because of the easy to use format. The index is thorough and the examples (profuse) make following the format SIMPLE.

Trimmer's book is one pertaining to the proper way of citing sources via the MLA standards. There are thorough examples and explanatory details allowing the user to easily format their work according to the accepted standards. The Essentials of MLA Style demonstrates each citation and works cited statement empirically, and even contains a correctly formatted essay on recycling on which the proper ways of in text citing are pointed out. An APA style section is also contained in the back of the book.
The work provides plenty of examples and displays a good number of MLA procedures. However, it does not properly go into internet or photographic source work. Otherwise, it displays a good amount of the proper form of MLA style documentation.
The literary style presents the topic in a clear and concise manner, creating a smooth sentence structure and professional air about it. The author does not stray from the topic, but overuses certain words at times.
The Essentials of MLA Style is a highly recommended source for anyone interested in composing a paper through that particular style, or anyone merely interested in how the style is used. Overall, Trimmer provides an excellent reference for those wishing to write research papers using the MLA form of documentation.

My Other Life, by Paul Theroux

In the Washington Post Book World, Sven Birkerts called this exuberant novel "a complex and gripping work of invention and confession . . . I understood again how the prose of a true writer can bring us to a world beyond." The book spans almost thirty years in the life of a fictional "Paul Theroux," who moves through young bachelorhood in Africa, in and out of marriage, affairs, and employment, and between continents. It's a wry, worldly, erotic, and deeply moving account of one man's first half century - "among the strongest things Theroux has ever written" (New York Times Book Review).

Amazon.com Review
Prolific and popular writer Paul Theroux turns himself on his ear in My Other Life, the "story of a life I could have lived had things been different," as told by another Paul Theroux. The book, arranged in sections that resemble stories more than chapters, traces a life that at times looks quite a bit like Theroux's real one; at other times not at all. He treads the familiar ground of his Peace Corps days in Africa that some readers will recall from My Secret History. The story then careens through Singapore, London, marriage, writing, family, and divorce. And it is not only Theroux who is a walking contradiction in this work; other characters explore the notion of two lives, giving the sections a unifying subject and a resounding theme.

From Publishers Weekly
Theroux has previously played with the identity of a novel's protagonist (in My Secret History), but this time his work is considerably more personal and entertaining, if less profound. It is in effect a fictionalized memoir in which the stages of his life are tellingly illuminated by what amount to a succession of brilliant short stories. Certain themes recur throughout: the narrator is constantly about to be seduced by determined but unsuitable women from whom he retreats at the last moment; he is always reminding himself of the fragile but oddly intimate relationship between writer and reader; and he bears an agonizing sense of exile from an everyday, quietly satisfying domestic existence he seems to cherish but can never attain (hence his compulsive travels). The line between fiction and reminiscence is deliberately and skillfully blurred, so that such choice episodes as a disastrous dinner party held to introduce Anthony Burgess to a lifelong fan, and another (for which Theroux crosses the Atlantic specially) that stars a very convincing Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, are at once triumphs of comic realism and of dark fantasy. Did he really meet an obscure German writer whose life and work seemed exactly to parallel his own? An Australian reporter he had once dismissed with a slighting line in a book, only to find she was a more seasoned and knowledgeable traveler than he? A seductive murderess in a remote Yorkshire coastal cottage? A louche London socialite who transformed Theroux's career before moving on, rapaciously, to another young writer victim? It doesn't matter. The book is so vividly compelling?and melancholy?as to remind a reader once more of how hugely talented?though, alas, sometimes uneven?a writer Theroux can be. First serial to the New Yorker and Granta; BOMC selection; author tour.

From Library Journal
Expatriate novelist and travel writer Theroux (Pillar of Hercules, LJ 9/15/95) takes stock of his life at mid-point in a loosely connected series of reminiscences covering his youth in Medford, Massachusetts, Peace Corps work in Africa, teaching in Singapore, and the momentous decision to settle permanently in England. Although he agonizes over the recent breakup of his marriage, Theroux's wife and children are mostly invisible. He grudgingly admits that the divorce may have been precipitated by his extended absences, but he never examines his wanderlust and disingenuously portrays himself as a dedicated homebody. The narrator of this book certainly resembles the famous writer of the same name, but in an introductory note Theroux insists that this is an imaginary memoir, a "what if" fantasy. Everything is fictional, including the vivid portraits of Anthony Burgess, Queen Elizabeth, and murderer Nathan Leopold. This is autobiography in the postmodern mode, very much like Jerry Kosinski's outrageous Hermit of Sixty Ninth Street (Kensington, 1991). True or not, Theroux's anecdotes are compulsively readable. For most fiction collections.

Fact or fiction?
By saliero
I found myself totally immersed in the first section about the time in the leper village as a Peace Corp volunteer. I was, of course, utterly convinced that it was autobiographical, and remain convinced about the rest of this "novel". A travel writer reveals so much about himself in other works, why not this one?
If this is not his "secret life", but rather his "other life", then this is the stuff that is no secret!
Beautifully written, whatever the truth is, with a control of language that manages to evoke the dry dustiness of African savanna, or the dripping humidity of equatorial Asia, or the brittleness of London society matrons.
If you like Theroux's travel writing, you will like this.

The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler, by James Cross Giblin

Many people believe Hitler was the personification of evil. In this Sibert Medal-winning biography, James Cross Giblin penetrates this façade and presents a picture of a complex person—at once a brilliant, influential politician and a deeply disturbed man.

In a straightforward and nonsensational manner, the author explores the forces that shaped the man as well as the social conditions that furthered his rapid rise to power. Against a background of crucial historical events, Giblin traces the arc of Hitler’s life from 1889 to 1945: his childhood, his years as a frustrated artist in Vienna, his extraordinary rise as dictator of Germany, his final days in an embattled bunker under Berlin. Powerful archival images provide a haunting visual accompaniment to this clear and compelling account of a life that left an ineradicable mark on our world. Author’s note, bibliography, index.

From Publishers Weekly
In this accomplished biography, Giblin (Charles Lindbergh) presents the rise and fall of "the most dangerous and ultimately the most destructive twentieth-century dictator." The author begins with Hitler's birth and modest upbringing in Austria and failed artistic aspirations, and follows his years as a WWI soldier and his budding abilities as a political orator (an army superior noted, chillingly, "Herr Hitler is a born people's speaker.... He clearly compels the attention of his listeners, and makes them think his way"). The compelling narrative then traces Hitler's gradual accumulation of power, including his early political associations with the Nazi Party, a failed 1923 coup attempt and subsequent imprisonment (where he penned his plans for political domination and the annihilation of European Jews in Mein Kampf). This insightful historical overview describes the social, political and economic conditions that proved ripe for the dictator's ascent, as it outlines Hitler's life and career, including his iron grip on his adopted "Fatherland" and his commitment to Lebensraum (or additional "living space" for Germany) which triggered the series of invasions that pushed the world into another war. Abundant primary source quotes and well-researched photographs enliven this comprehensive volume. A closing chapter describes the rise of neo-Nazism both in the U.S. and abroad. Giblin offers an absorbing portrait of an enigmatic leader who loved dogs and opera but could also order the extermination of millions of innocent people. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up-The most complete and successful biography of the Fhrer available for this audience. It takes courage to write fairly about the person who perpetuated almost certainly the most suffering and misery in the 20th century, and Giblin accepts this mantle and bears it nobly. This "extraordinary villain who promised to restore his nation's honor and dignity" began life very much as an average person. His subsequent transformation into brilliant politician and then cruel war leader and finally humiliated vanquished tyrant is presented seamlessly and realistically. The first chapter establishes the ground rules for the rest of the book as it sets out to explore how such "deadly ventures" happened. As the book continues, the historical perspective is superb. For example, while Giblin portrays Hitler's persecution of certain groups as severe and reprehensible, he also mentions the fact that during this time many nations and institutions, including American universities, had specific anti-Semitic policies. The last chapter, entitled "Hitler Lives," shows how some people to this day are attempting to perpetuate the man's legacy and beliefs. This book maintains focus on the life of its subject-including his pets and love life-and does not, as many others do, stray into areas belonging to books specifically on the Holocaust or World War II. Good-quality photos, political cartoons, and reproductions augment the text. A biography in the truest sense, this is a terrifying must for all libraries.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 7-9. Hitler's cold eyes stare out from the cover photograph of this excellent biography. Much of the book centers on Hitler's early years and rise to power after the First World War, with emphasis on the complicity or, in some cases, naivete of the German political leaders and industrialists. It also covers the failed appeasement efforts of the British and French in pre-World War II months. Giblin moves beyond political events and delves into the twisted realms of Hitler's strangely contradictory personality, with anecdotes about Hitler's love of dogs, his relationships with women, and his vegetarianism. Giblin wisely avoids cataloging all the battles and events of World War II and keeps the focus on Hitler's personal reaction to these events and his final crazed days in his Berlin bunker. The last chapter deals with contemporary neo-Nazi movements throughout the world. Interspersed with the text are fascinating period photographs. Source notes are provided for each chapter, and the author includes a short informal essay, explaining why he wrote the book and what sources were particularly helpful. Todd Morning

Richie's Picks: THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER
By N. S.
"There are no memorials to Adolf Hitler in Germany, the country he ruled with an iron hand from 1933 to 1945."
So begins THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER by James Cross Giblin, a book that provides essential information for young adults who want to understand the twentieth century. In writing a detailed biography of the most infamous human being of the last hundred years, the author has put together a fascinating story that never lets up. In doing so, Mr. Giblin also provides a clear overview of the events leading up to and through the second world war. Beginning with the haunting cover, the book is illustrated with large, clear photographs of the significant people and places we encounter, as well as several well-drawn caps to which I'd periodically refer as I read the book.
"To celebrate his triumph, Hitler planned a sightseeing tour of Paris, a city he had long admired but never visited. His favorite architect, Albert Speer, accompanied the Führer as he visited the ornate Paris Opera, drove down the broad Champs Élysées, stopped at the Eiffel Tower, and lingered for a long time at the tomb of Napoleon Bonaparte. The three-hour tour through almost completely deserted streets--the French deliberately stayed away--ended on the heights of Montmartre, long known as a district for artists. Perhaps its narrow streets and outdoor cafés reminded Hitler of his youthful days in Vienna, when he himself had dreamed of being an artist."
THE LIFE AND DEATH OF ADOLF HITLER does an exceptional job answering the questions of how Hitler was able to gain control of the German government, and how his forces and henchmen were able to succeed so horrifically and effectively before they were finally halted. We see how the long-term effects of the Versailles Treaty on Germany lead almost inevitably to the opportunity for Hitler's rise to power. We are reminded of the significant anti-Semitism in the US, Britain, and other countries that figured into their less-than-stellar response to Hitler's aggression and genocide. (I can remember how my friends' families still weren't welcome at some private clubs in the 60's!) And, of course, we see Hitler from birth to death: as a son, a student, an artist, a failure, and a homeless person who eventually finds a group in which to belong. Joining that organization, making it his, and changing the world forever--the lesson here is not lost on the author, who ends the book with a profile of some Neo-Nazi groups in existence today.
We also get a good look at many of the trustworthy men who turned Hitler's maniacal goals into reality:
"Neat and methodical, Himmler was a born bureaucrat. He worshiped Hitler and would carry out any order the Führer gave him, immediately and without question."
I thought that I knew all about Adolf Hitler. But from the vivid photograph of one of his watercolor paintings to the details of his final hours with Eva Braun and Joseph Goebbels, James Cross Giblin has illuminated the life of a madman and given me a real education.

Most Dominating Book I've Ever Encountered in My Life
By A Customer
When I started reading this book, the first few pages were quite, slow. When I got to the part of how exactly the "National Socialist Party (Nazis)" formed, I became "glued to the book."
For the past year or so I've been extremely interested in the Holocaust, Nazis, but mainly the ruthless murderer himself, Mr. Adolf Hitler, and his Final Solution plans to take over Germany, dictate, and wipe out all Jews, as he once said, "I want Jews off the face of the Earth."
I'd recommend this book to a variety of people. Although, this book doesn't quite suit children under the age of nine. This is more of a Young Adult novel, for teenagers interested in learning about National Socialism, the Holocaust, and Adolf Hitler from his quotes from Mein Kampf, and James Cross Giblin's perspective on the matter. This book also includes events from Anne Frank, and Colonel Stauffenberg who plotted the assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler, named "Operation Valkurie." This book, personally has changed my life, especially since I come from the Jewish religion and am interested in learning about my heritage. Other books I would recommend to you, having to doing with sacrifices, and the Holocaust, are, "Number the Stars," and "The Devils Arithmetic." I would most definitely give each of these books a five star rating! I hope all you buyers on Amazon found this review very helpful. Shalom! and Peace to the World."
