The Tale of Willie Monroe, by Alan Schroeder

Willie Monroe is sure he's the strongest critter in all of Tennessee-after all, his arms are big as stovepipes and his chest is broad as a barn door. He decides to enter a contest in Carolina just to prove it. Along the way, he meets an exceptionally strong li'l slip of a girl named Delilah and her ninety-nine-year-old granny, who can carry a full-grown horse on her shoulders. Compared to them, Willie is weak as water! It's only with their rigorous training that Willie is able to arm-wrestle, stack logs, milk cows, plow fields, and raise barns faster and better than anyone else, winning the contest as well as Delilah's hand in marriage. Humorous illustrations and an Appalachian spin on an ancient Japanese folktale make for a hilarious story about a young man put in his place by two strong women.

From Publishers Weekly
It may seem an unlikely transplant, but this adaptation of a 13th-century Japanese folktale seems right at home in rural Tennessee, the setting of Schroeder's (Minty: A Story of Young Harriet Tubman) robust retelling. Willie, a "real big feller," thinks he's the "strongest critter" in the state, until he meets feisty young Delilah and her stronger-than-steel 99-year-old granny, both previous winners of an annual "arm-wrestlin', log-stackin', cow-milkin', field-plowin', barn-raisin' contest." With kid-pleasing irony, Granny proclaims the muscular Willie "weak as water" and promises to toughen him up so he can win the next contest. Glass's (Bad Guys: True Stories of Legendary Gunslingers...) illustrations, silhouettes and full-fledged paintings, rendered in oil and colored pencil, handle the hyperbole with deadpan flair. Bumpkins with ungainly postures and oversize shoes, Delilah and Granny soberly serve up gargantuan breakfasts and take Willie to task as he trains. Readers on the younger end of the target audience may find the lengthy text and heavy dialect something of a challenge, but the eccentric characters and range of voices promise a crackling good read-aloud. Ages 5-9.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-5The traditional Japanese tall tale, retold by Claus Stamm in Three Strong Women (Viking, 1990; o.p.), is given an Appalachian setting in this rollicking yarn. Willie Monroe, by his own admission the strongest critter in all of Tennessee, decides to enter a Carolina arm-wrestlin, log-stackin, cow-milkin, field-plowin, barn-raisin contest with a first prize of a big ol bag o money and ten acres of free land. Fortunately for Willie, a girl named Delilah and her granny take pity on this puny lil feller and decide to put him in training for the contest. Schroeders lilting text narrates a tale that begs to be read (or told) aloud and Glasss exuberant oil-paint and colored-pencil illustrations extend the humor in each scene. Willie Monroe is worthy of joining the canon of tall-tale heroes. And, unlike Delilahs former suitor Paul Bunyan, he gets the girl.Kathleen Whalin, Greenwich Country Day School, CT

From Booklist
Schroeder gives a Japanese folktale a real face-lift by staging it in a hillbilly-country setting. Instead of a Japanese wrestler out to win a contest, Schroeder's protagonist is "a real big feller named Willie Monroe"; and instead of three women coaching the wrestler, Schroeder substitutes a strong, old granny and her equally powerful granddaughter. The story is much longer than what's usual in picture books, though it is written with energy and phrased nicely for reading aloud. The length of the text may best suit slightly older children, who will surely be reminded of Paul Bunyan and be savvy enough to chortle at Schroeder's own text reference to the legendary lumberjack. Glass' sturdy, slapstick art fits the story nicely. A brief source note. Stephanie Zvirin
