In The Road to Ubar, filmmaker Nicholas Clapp follows in the footsteps of earlier visitors to the Arabian peninsula as he seeks the legendary city of Ubar. For centuries, the city of Ubar was the object of legend, quests and uncertainty. An ancient trading outpost in Arabia, it had, according to the Koran, sunk into the desert sands as a result of God's wrath upon its sinful population. In the 1980s, Clapp, a documentary filmmaker, undertook to find the city. After exhaustive research that took him from ancient texts to satellite photos, he eventually led an expedition that finally located Ubar in what is now Oman. Clapp first learned of the then-chimerical city in the early 1980s, when working on a film about the oryx (a tough and graceful desert antelope). His interest was piqued further as he read of 19th-century British expeditions, which he synopsizes along with other relevant tales. Like Indiana Jones, Clapp is as comfortable in the library as in reconnaissance helicopters or on the sands, and his efforts to separate myth from possible reality make for a gripping intellectual adventure. Clapp's team, including his wife and expedition manager, Kay, and a host affable experts, weren't sure what they'd found in a giant sinkhole until they spent weeks digging and putting pieces of pottery together with knowledge of the ancient trade in frankincense. What they found was not only Ubar but also a fitting resolution to Clapp's engaging story of the excitement of discovery, of a mystery solved and of the spirit of adventure.

YA-When Clapp flew to the Sultanate of Oman to film a National Geographic documentary, he developed a love for this desert that would lead him to one of the top scientific discoveries of 1992. On that trip he heard of a fabled city destroyed by God for its sins of greed. It was in a place known as the Empty Quarter, but explorers, including Lawrence of Arabia, had failed to locate it. Clapp became obsessed. With only the slimmest of clues with which to work, he began to seek other ways to search for Ubar. Almost on a whim, he contacted NASA, hoping to use its imaging technology that could see through up to 18 feet of sand dunes. After several strokes of amazing luck, his contacts successfully retrieved and enhanced a satellite image that clearly indicated a major caravan route. Though delayed by lack of funding and the military operations of Desert Storm, he managed to launch two archaeological expeditions that eventually uncovered the lost city. Clapp's unusual interdisciplinary approach utilized the cultural myths relating to Ubar, as well as the historical chronicles and maps, and applied the hard scientific analysis of satellite images. Not only is the discovery aptly chronicled here but the author also gives an excellent view of the culture of ancient Arabia. The story is told with all the intrigue and humor of a low-key Indiana Jones adventure, and is documented with voluminous notes and a bibliography. It also includes black-and-white drawings, diagrams, and maps. A thoroughly engrossing book.

Outstanding Reading!

...this is a must read book. The author's handling of how the ancient city was found and the subsequent discoveries should give anyone with interest in history reason to spend a few hours with this book. As someone who has spend considerable time in North Africa and the Middle East (since 1982) I was astonished by his understanding of the peoples of the Arabian pennisula. For once, somebody actually portrayed these mischaracterized peoples for who they are and not what the stateside pundits think they should be. Well done and congratulations.

A pleasant memoir of personal adventure with little excitement

Far south in the remote Empty Quarter of Saudi Arabia, lay a legendary city that had grown wealthy through the frankincense trade. The Sodom and Gomorrah of the Koran, it was destoyed by an earthquake one day in punishment for its wicked ways. Did the city ever exist? This book tells the story of how an amateur with a passion for discovery assembled an expert team that ultimately found the city and excavated it.

The book includes descriptions of historical attempts to find the city, the search for new clues, the steady assembly of a set of believers with the skills to act on them, time on the ground in Saudi Arabia and Oman searching the desert dunes and mountains for evidence, and then the final piecing together of evidence that the legendary city had been hiding in plain sight for centuries.

Sounds exciting, no? Well, despite clean prose and good efforts to build and sustain suspense throughout, this reader found just enough of interest to warrant a solid article in the Smithsonian magazine. Lots of puttering about and personal meanderings about bad meals in a stinking, bad place; little to sink your teeth into. All in all, a pleasant beach read that takes you along as a naive but determined amateur pursues his passion. And, in fairness, makes a significant archeological find. But almost no detail about that find and its implications for the history of the Middle East.

Applause for Clapp.

Applause for Clapp. This book is a wonderful adventure of mythic bedtimes stories that are now being Archaeologically confirmed by NASA from space. Slight undulations at eye level are revealed as busy routes during biblical times. Shards of pottery confirm their ancient lineage. In many ways Clapp's enthralling book reminds me of the equally myth-breaking and wonderful "THE Autobiography of Jesus of Nazareth and the Missing Years" by Richard G. Patton. In both books, icons are reinvested with present day relevance through driving passion rather than detached erudition. That is not to say that they are not validated by twentieth century 'science'. In both cases archaeological evidence is coming to the surface almost daily to support their, previously assumed, wild allegations. Ubar is also where Paul is said to have spent most of his two years after his experience on the road to Damascus - prior to coming forward to create "Christianity". Being the heart of the Incense Route, both these books compliment each other as though different hues of the same color. A wonderful and exciting read.

Low-growing, spreading perennial, 3–8 in., often forming large colonies. Oval leaves in whorls of 6 beneath showy “flowers” (bracts); veins arch from leaf base toward tip; margins entire. Small, greenish white flowers tightly clustered above 4 large, white, petallike bracts; May–July. Fruit scarlet, single-seeded. Where found: Moist, cool forests, meadows, bogs. Alaska to Idaho, Mont. south to N.M., nw. Calif. eastern N. America. Uses: American Indians toasted the leaves, then sprinkled the powder on sores. Berries were a snack source, dried and stored for winter; also chewed to treat insanity. Leaf tea drunk as a strong laxative and to treat paralysis. The Paiutes mashed and strained the roots and used the liquid as a wash for sore eyes. Tea of the whole plant was taken for coughs, fevers, and tuberculosis. Tea from roots, leaves, and berries was drunk for fits. A root tea was given to babies for colic. Bark tea drunk for body pains.

Multibranched, bumpy-stemmed perennial, spreading along ground; to 24 in. high. Leaves succulent, alternate, flat, ovate to spoon-shaped; margins wavy. Flowers stalkless in leaf axils, showy, white to red- tinged, with many stamens and 5 linear petals; Mar.–Oct. Bumpy fruit opening when moist. Where found: Saline soils near coast, bluffs, disturbed sites, coastal sage scrub. Along the cen. and s. coast of Calif. to Ariz.; Baja Calif., Mexico; S. America, Mediterranean. Alien (South Africa). Uses: Historically, physicians used leaf juice to soothe inflammation of the mucous membranes of the respiratory or urinary system; to treat painful or difficult urination and involuntary urination. In Europe the fresh juice has been used to treat water retention and painful urination and to soothe lung inflammation. Related species: M. edule L. (Carpobrotus edulis [L.] N. E. Br.), or Hottentot Fig, a common escape in California, is used externally in S. Africa for burns and thrush and internally for dysentery. Warning: High in oxalates, potentially toxic in high doses, especially in flower and fruit.

Leaves heart-shaped or oval on long stalks; tips pointed; margins toothed. Flowers solitary from leaf axils. Wash., Idaho, Utah, Ariz. Rockies from Mont. to N.M.; eastern N. America. Uses: Native Americans used a root tea for pains in the bladder region. Externally, a poultice was used to treat skin abrasions and boils. In European traditions violet species were listed as soothing and softening for coughs and colds, urinary tract ailments, and skin conditions. Warning: Roots of most if not all violet species may induce vomiting.

I like it, but....

I struggled with what star classification to give this book. On one hand, I find it very informational. On the other hand, I have a hard time figuring out what plants I am looking at. Apparently you need to have some deeper knowledge of plants before using this book, which I don't have. So I find it difficult to use when I am in the field. I don't even bring it along with me anymore, and sometimes resort to take pictures of the plants and then see if I can find them in the book later. So I find the book to be very much a mixed bag.

All Too Disappointing

I am a layman who is looking for a guide to herbs that would help me identify herbs in the wild. My expectation was that the photographs in

A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs would be fantastic and would help me ID plants in the wild with confidence. I was not pleased at all.

The photographs in this book are thumbnail size and often show only the flowers of the plants in question. The book itself is of a tiny size and affords little space to have "real" close-up photographs of leaves and overall look of the plant in-situ.

I would contrast this "Reader's Digest" version of a book made to identify plants in the wild with Roger Phillips' Mushrooms And Other American Fungi Of North America. This book is a full 11 3/4" X 8 3/4" and has photographs that fill a whole page, in some cases. I think it is fair to say that every photograph in Roger's book is larger than ANY picture in A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs, whose photographs are attributed Stephen Foster. A quick view of Foster's web site shows similar "thumbnail" sized photographs. I am greatly disappointed!

The text contained within A Field Guide to Western Medicinal Plants and Herbs pales in comparison with what can be found on line.

I am hoping RHS Encyclopedia of Herbs and Their Uses gives a better view and history of the plants.

In closing, I would say this book should be the last on your list - not the first!

Her most recent project is the first book-length study of the fiction of Nicholasa Mohr.

Sandra Mano (Ph.D., University of Southern California) teaches in UCLA Writing Programs.

Excellent pieces depicting a broad range of cultures.

This textbook was a pleasure to read. I even read some of the non-required excerpts and kept it around for an entire year after my class was done! The quality of all of the writings is great and the selections span much of the spectrum of cultural writings in/about/from America. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to build a curriculum for an institution or for themselves as a way to broaden their literary and cultural horizons.

About the Author
Kathy Peiss received her Ph.D. from Brown University in 1982. Her research specialties include the history of American women, gender, sexuality, leisure, consumption, and popular culture. She is the author of Hope in a Jar: The Making of America's Beauty Culture (1998) and Cheap Amusements: Working Women and Leisure in Turn-of-the-Century New York (1986), co-author of Men and Women: A History of Costume, Gender, and Power (1989), and co-editor of Passion and Power: Sexuality in History (1989). Her articles, essays, and reviews have appeared in numerous journals, including Genders, Social Problems, Business History Review, The Nation, Journal of American History, and Women's Review of Books. She has held fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Rutgers Center for Historical Analysis, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Woodrow Wilson Foundation.

His aunt reluctantly agrees to let him take it home, and he embarks on a summer-long quest to restore the wrecked bundle of silk and wood to its former glory. He involves many others in the project: the tailor, Great Aunt's mahjongg friends, the kitemaker, the herbalist, an artist, and, at last, the Buddhist priest, all of whom are touched by Peter's determination. Watercolor paintings, reminiscent of Ted Lewin's work, lovingly depict in glorious and enticing detail a close-knit Cantonese community in an unnamed big-city Chinatown. Expressions and gestures vividly convey each character's emotion as Peter wins the adults over to his cause. His anxiety and joy, along with the affection and excitement of his elders as the dragon comes to life, light up the book. Ages 4^-8. Although this story features a little boy, its main character is really a Chinese American community. Peter is not happy about spending his summer in Chinatown with his great-aunt. But his feelings begin to change when he spots an old, 10-man dragon in a shop window. With the help of his great-aunt, he acquires the dragon and sets out to repair it. Friends and shopkeepers are enlisted in the task. Mr. Pong the tailor agrees to sew up holes in exchange for Peter running errands; Miss Chiao the kitemaker fixes the tail; and his great-aunt's mah-jongg group gilds the dragon's horns. In the course of making the dragon new again, Peter learns about the people and shops of Chinatown as well as the traditions of his culture. Nunes' text builds to a satisfying conclusion, although it makes an occasional abrupt shift along the way. The expansive watercolor illustrations are warm, colorful, and full of details unique to Chinatown. An endnote provides information on Chinese dragon lore. Leone McDermott

I like the book The Last Dragon because it has good illustrations and I like the reality in the drawing. Also I like how the story is written and I love the dragon. Also I like the emotions in the boy. In the illustrations he put in a lot of detail and shadows. I like the food because it makes me hungry. I like the Chinese names. Also I like all the stuff he put in one picture.

The Last Dragon was a very good book. It has very good illustrations also, and the story is very good itself. It describes the pictures very well, and the pictures are very realistic. I think that this would be a good book for children 6 and up. It also tells people the history of the Chinese New Year. Also what they do at this time of the year. This was a great book!!
