Mr. Grumps's ``down-in-the-dumps'' approach to the Christmas holiday leads to the disappearance of Lyle's favorite feline friend in this reassuring tale about the love of family and friends. When Loretta, the cat, disappears, the Primm family at East 88th and Mr. Grumps know exactly what they want for Christmasher safe return. Prunella, the Cat Lady, takes Loretta in; an out-of-work actor, Hector, happens to know both the Primms and Prunella and provides the means (and requisite misunderstandings) to a happy resolution. Waber (Bearsie Bear and the Surprise Sleepover Party, 1997, etc.) demonstrates again an uncanny ability to convey a multitude of emotions in a few strokes, giving each character in the Primm household a distinct personality. Especially charming are the scenes of Lyle engaged in the household chores of washing dishes, making the beds, scrubbing, dusting, sweeping, and waxing. Powerful story!

This review is on the "Autobiography" as I have not read this particular edition, so I don't know what the "other writings" are.
This story is brilliantly written. So powerful, I had a hard time believing that Miss Jane Pittman is a fictional character; she was very real in my mind.
As a look at life for African Americans during the Civil War, the post-Civil War years, through the first half of last century, and the civil rights protests of the 60's, this story made these times for this particular population more real to me than any other essays, letters, stories or histories ever had before.
This book is not the easiest to confront - nothing is glossed over, yet it is not depressing to read, oddly enough. The writer masterfully uses the sad, cruel events of those times to demonstrate the strength and beauty of his heroine.
I would not recommend this book for young children, but I think this would be a wonderful addition to any high school education.

What's the point?

Why write an "autobiography" that is actually pure fiction? This book is trite, episodic and pointless. The "Autobiography of Paul Bunyan" might be a good follow up to this one. This is utter nonsense without any true historical relevance.

Where are the pages?

I got this used workbook and in the description, it said that the book had some notes and was highlighted, but was fine to use. So I bought it. It arrived fairly fast, but there were some problems with the workbook; it was missing pages. I wish they would have told me that there were some pages missing so that I could have just bought the more expensive one. I did not like how misleading this product description was.

Never Received Product

I ordered a text book and 20 days (and 3 failed quizes later) later I looked around on the internet to find out how to contact the seller because I never received the book. It turns out that it is a company in Canada. I sent a scathing e-mail to three different addresses that I found because I read that other people had issues with contacting this company (the one to customer service bounced back). In no time someone replied, but with no specifics. I sent another e-mail and then the reply was one telling me that they could not send the book and they will process a refund. I strongly suggest that you do not order from this company. When you order anything, check it the provider, put it on your credit card so you are prepared to dispute the charge if necessary, and buy American. I guess it is a hassle getting things accross the border.

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK (Get the new 4th edition instead!)

There's a new edition of this book (Peterson Field Guide to Mammals of North America: Fourth Edition (Peterson Field Guide Series)), and it's fantastic! This third edition, however, is terribly outdated and not at all worth buying anymore. Buy the 4th edition of the book, completely redone by Fiona Reid. The new one has new color plates, more complete and updated natural history info, and colored range maps interspersed within the species accounts, instead of at the back of the book. It's the book I require of my students in the Mammalogy lab I teach at a university.

Great Field guide

Peterson's field guide to mammals is one of my standard references as a mammology student. I constantly use the range maps,color identification plates, and animal descriptions. The book provides you with good identification characteristics indicated by arrows on the illustrations of each animal and a brief life history of every species north of the border. There are skull plates at the back of the book that are good for comparing different families but do not include every species and in some cases are poor positions to see defining attributes. The color plates for the most part have good illustrations but a few look hoaky like the Mountain Lion. Nevertheless, they all still provide good size comparisons and coloration of the animals. Consistant with other Peterson guides.

This is a good guide to be used in conjunction with the Kays and Wilson guide (a much more recent and complete book). It has not been updated in quite some time, but the information should not be dismissed. It works, but should not be your only mammal field guide. You will be disappointed if it is.
