About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

Odd plot, but good

We mostly like this book in my house. We bought it because Pretzel looks like Hundley from Curious George. The plot feels a little odd (Pretzel falls in love with another dog and desperately wants her to marry him; she doesn't want to), but I think that's just because it's 70+ years old and it's not what we're used to in our kids' books anymore. Still, it's cute and my son (3yo) likes it, so it's popular in our house.

We bought a dachshund 16 years ago, her name was Jasmine, and she grew up with our kids. Jasmine is no longer with us but our daughter and son-in-law bought two baby dachshunds to grow up with their baby boys. After reading this book I had to buy it for our grandkids to enjoy when they come to gramma and grampa's house.

Such a good story, especially since we have a dog who is half dachshund, and we call him pretzel dog when he curls up in his bed, and he has a long haired dachshund girlfriend down the street. I am also a long time Curious George fan (so much so I have a tattoo of him). This could not have been more perfect.

4. Language Development: Personal and Social
5. Language and Cultural Diversity
6. The Language of Politics and Advertising
7. Technology and Language
8. Writers and the Writing Process
An appendix is titled, "Writing and Documenting: A Brief Guide."
Buyer beware. This book is meant to be studied over a college semester. It is not always an easy read. Several chapters are technical. Others are easier to read (i.e., understand).

Thin Volume Fills Gaps

Though not as extensive - or as scholarly - as Merriam Webster's "English Usage Dictionary," this little book has often helped me explain thorny contemporary usage problems to my advanced ESL students. For example, a student came to me with the lyrics "Hadn't a been for..." and asked me to explain the usage of "hadn't have." None of my other books addressed this issue. (If you're not sure, see page 39.)

There is Peter Carder, who sailed in the 16th century with Drake, was castaway once and twice marooned, ingratiated himself with Brazilian cannibals and outwitted his Portuguese enemies. Leslie insightfully describes the real "Robinson Crusoe," Alexander Selkirk, a sailing master who quarreled with his captain and was stranded for four years on an island paradise off the coast of Chile in the early 1700s. The account of Marguerite de la Roque, a 16th century French woman who was betrayed as an adulterer by her adventurer cousin on an Atlantic voyage and then left to die, pregnant, on an island off the coast of Canada with her servant and her lover, is affecting. But for sheer thrills and inspiration, readers will be fascinated by the tale of the ill-planned and ill-fated Stefansson Polar expedition of 1913. Illustrated.

Desperate Journeys, a collection of survival stories from Western culture ranging from 16th-century shipwrecks to 20th-century plane crashes, presents a hodgepodge of data about the human condition. Some are fascinating like the true tale of Selkirk, a shipwrecked Scot, which formed the basis for Robinson Caruso. But John Knowles's story about "survival" in the north woods killing game with his bare hands, detailed in serialized tabloid accounts, have a huckster quality. Yet his fame inspired Edgar Rice Burroughs to create Tarzan. The author lacks the ability to endow his collection with the meaningful insight into human nature. The recording's most outstanding section consists of quotes from Antoine de Saint-Exupery's own classic account of his Libyan plane crash. Addictive!

This book was obviously exhaustively researched, as it spares no details in the dozens of true and horrifying accounts of people throughout the ages who were trapped in hopeless survival situations. Many lived, many did not... The only flaw in this teriffic book is that it may be a bit long and seems to lose momentum before the end. It could have been a third shorter and still been as powerful and just as fascinating. I was a little disappointed that the author did not cover the Raft of the Medusa or the Donner Party, as they would fit perfectly into this book. Perhaps he thought they've already been studies more thoroughly by other reasearchers. But it was still very much worth reading and never got boring. I was surprised at how many instances of civilized cannibalism have occured throughout history! I would recommend this book to anyone interested in survival or human psychology.

BEST collection of survival stories I've ever came across!

"True stories of Castaways and Other Survivors"
This is a superb mix of 20+ different types of survival stories. From the Poor Englishman who landed on a barren isle that "had neither springs nor streams and was utterly devoid of vegetation: no grass, plants, or trees" and managed to live for a full year and be rescued -to- The Headhunter's Casket, which in part reads, "...two issues should be examined and resolved. The first involves an individual's responsibility or guilt for actions taken to ensure his survival. The second has to do with the lasting effects of ordeals." It is truely some of the best reading and information, of this type, I've EVER come across.

"Real" adventure stories, not modern contrived ones.

With the bestseller lists populated by the likes of such adventure stories as Into Thin Air and other contrived adventures of the bored rich, it is refreshing to read about adventure stories that hark back to a time when man was less concerned with adventure and more concerned with science, discovery, or just making a living. Adventure was just something you accidentally stumbled into. The author recounts many lesser known survival stories, and attempts to reconstruct a mental and psychological profile of the victims as well. In an age where we look at adventure and heroism as more important than the preparation and foresight that would make such adventure unnecessary, it is refreshing to read about survival stories where those suffering the hardships simply want to get it over with. The book hums along nicely for about 2/3 of the 500+ pages, but the author seems to run out of steam and stories, and seems to want to read more i nto the adventure experience than is actually there. Many of the survivors seem less than willing to elaborate upon their experiences, or semed less than heroic in their hardships, but this only adds weight to the contrast between explorer/discoverer and the modern adventurer. But those of you with a taste for the bizarre will love this book, it contains enough morbidity,death, cannibalism and suffering to satisfy the most harcore adventure enthusiast. THe chapters on the rampant cannibalism i n the history of the British Navy and in other adventure scenarios are especially gruesome. Bon Appetit! All in all a worthwhile if a bit long of a read.
