With just a few lines of Lincoln's speech per double-page spread, a pace is established that allows the language to sink in and take hold. The wood engravings, depicting sweeping panoramas and crowds that continue beyond the page, provide the dark serious tone and high drama appropriate for the subject. (Interestingly, wood engravings were the choice of Leonard Everett Fisher in his interpretation of The Gettysburg Address [Watts, 1963; o.p.]). The scenes alternate between the action of battle and the quiet artifacts left behind, from a parade of slaves?"all men are created equal," to a processional of spirited laborers?"dedicated...to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced." These are interspersed with views of Lincoln addressing the crowd from various perspectives. Ages 5^-7. Egan is one of the most interesting author-illustrators around, always trying something new and quirky. This time, the story is about a dog couple, Arthur and Stella Crandall. Arthur keeps burning the toast, so when an annoying fly tells Arthur he will grant him three wishes if he puts down the fly swatter, Arthur wishes for a new toaster, for the nasty crocodiles on the corner to turn into squirrels, and for a trip to a tropical island where the natives sing and dance all day. Well, the fly doesn't get it quite right. The toaster turns into a squirrel, and the crocs turn into toasters, but the natives sing and dance ad nauseam on the tropical island. Happily, magic brings the couple back home again, where they are able to enjoy their new toaster (formerly a crocodile). There's nothing predictable here, either in the meticulously rendered watercolor art with its deco edge or in the hilarious story. Some of this has an adult feel, but it hits its target audience, too. Ilene Cooper

Stella and Arthur, a couple of dogs, live on Davenport Street. Theirs is a humble existence: They eat--Arthur burns the toast every morning--go for walks, sleep. ``It was a nice life. Not perfect, but nice.'' The flaw is that a gang of unruly crocodiles taunt them on their morning walk, e.g., ``Hey, lady, what did your husband give you for your birthday, a flea collar?'' A fly in the kitchen, begging Arthur not to swat it, is the bearer of three wishes. Arthur, incredulous, humors the insect and the wishes come true, sort of. Egan (Metropolitan Cow, 1996, etc.) casts ordinary Joes into dreamlike, absurdist situations--with a hint of menace--that are quelled by a good dose of common sense and plain speaking. Be careful what you wish for!!

Arthur and Stella Crandall are two dogs who have a quiet, happy life. "Almost perfect, but not quite." Two things keep their lives from being completely perfect: one is that Arthur continually burns the toast in the morning and two are the 5 mean alligators that hang about on the street corner and continually taunt him and Stella on their morning walk.
Well, life goes on as usual (the sun rises, the toast burns, and all is well) until one day a fly buzzes through the window. Arthur raises his flyswatter to smack the thing when the fly cries out "Wait!" Turns out, the fly is a magic fly and in return for Arthur not swatting him, the fly will grant three wishes. "'Oh come on,' says Arthur, `that's the dumbest thing I've ever heard." At the fly's insistence, Arthur comes up with three ridiculous wishes: a new toaster, for the crocodiles to turn into squirrels and for him and his wife to be magically transported to a beautiful island where the natives sing and dance all day long.
Arthur, of course, doesn't believe any of this until some time later when he comes into the kitchen to find a squirrel running about and his toaster missing. What's more odd are the five new, shiny toasters sitting on the street corner where the crocs used to be. How odd!! However, that's nothing compared to what happens when he and Stella wake up on a lush, tropical island with the odd natives offering them fresh fruit from a silver platter!! Good grief, his wishes DID come true!!
Mr. Egan has written and illustrated a very amusing tale for story savvy children. Arthur's sarcastic comments to the "magic fly" will delight children who have grown up with (and possibly grown tired of) the old spare-me-and-I'll-grant-you-three-wishes fables. The pictures are big, bold and beautiful, drawing the reader right into the story (a note tacked to the fridge with a magnet reads "bones, milk"). Turning the page and finding Arthur and Stella on a tropical island while still in their bed adds the perfect, hilarious and surreal touch to this wonderful story. Highly recommended!!

Tasty Toast!

"Burnt Toast on Davenport Street" has become a mantra in our house! This wacky book which we originally took out of the public library (and didn't want to return) has become an all time family favorite for it's droll sense of humor, vivid illustrations, and rather bizarre plot. My seven year old insists on a reading every night before bed. We do have a toaster that frequently misbehaves especially for "Dad" so that might be part of the charm but...You have to read this if you are between the ages of 5 and 11! Not since "Yucka, Drucka, Droni" has a book so captured our imagination.

This book is truely original, and I do not think that there will be another like it. Arthur and Stella Crandall are two dogs that live a very simple life. One thing that is very familiar about their life is that every morning while Arthur is making breakfast, he burns the toast. One day, a magic fly flies in and promises to grant Arthur three wishes in turn that Arthur does not [swat] him. Arthur, not believing the fly, makes wishes that come into his head, and he doesn't really think about them. The wishes end up coming true, and you will never believe what happens to Arthur and Stella unless you read the book. My favorite character was Stella. I would recommend this imaginative story to anyone.

Grade 5-9-In this well-organized and thorough resource, Trumble delves into the people, legends, and politics surrounding the creation and ruin of the largest library in the ancient world. The chapter on collecting books details its methods of acquisition, which ranged from payment to thievery. A section on Alexandria's competitor, Pergamum, located in Asia Minor, provides an opportunity to describe and contrast the use of parchment and papyrus. Much attention is paid to the scholars who utilized the library and their achievements. For example, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the Earth. Herophilus practiced dissection and probably vivisection, adding much to contemporary understanding of the function of human organs and systems. Back matter includes maps, the Ptolemy family tree, and a description of sites in ancient Alexandria. The full-color, single-page illustrations, rendered in watercolor and gouache, are uneven. Marshall is more successful at depicting the flow of fabric, architectural ornamentation, and inanimate objects than in capturing the proportions and physicality of the human body. The modern-day Bibliotheca Alexandrina, an institution inspired by its ancient predecessor, is given only a brief mention. These flaws notwithstanding, this book is a unique and timely celebration of the age-old passion for and preservation of ideas.

Gr. 5-7. It's hard to find an untouched topic in children's nonfiction, but this comes close. The library at Alexandria was the most famous in the ancient world, a center of learning, a place where much original research in astronomy, anatomy, mathematics, and science was done. Trumble begins with Alexander, who wanted to build a great city in Egypt, but died before it was finished. It was one of his successors who built the library and stocked it with a vast collection of books, some obtained through nefarious means. Succeeding chapters describe the research done at the site, the most interesting, perhaps, being the work of Herophilus, who became an expert in human anatomy by practicing vivisection in order to learn more. Some of the attractively illustrated, full-page color paintings are full of activity; others are more stilted, simply showing people in discussion. In either case, however, the art has a younger feel than the strong, interesting text. A useful support for curriculum. Ilene Cooper

An exceptionally vivid presentation

Robina MacIntyre Marshall's fine drawings lend to this outstanding survey of the Library of Alexandria - which was much more than a simple repository of books. Scholars who visited the Library dissected corpses, star-gazed, and had controversial discussions speculating about science, nature and the world. Their findings would change world knowledge. An exceptionally vivid presentation, Kelly Trumble's Library Of Alexandria would make a popular and welcome addition to both school and community library collections.

Engaging Read, Interesting Illustrations & Vignettes, Links Past to Today

As I am not a trained artist, I disagree with the other reviewer. I think the illustrations add to the imagination of the young reader and enhance their memory of the material presented in the book. For a student who "hates" history or "hates" to read, I think this is a true find! I think it is a very interesting read for a young person (upper elementary through middle school and even a low reading highschooler or for a quick read for a highschooler.) It ties together the general overview of ancient history that they should be learning and ties in interesting vignettes. Having taught middle school level ancient world history, I wish I would have had this book when I was teaching. It is a bit slanted regarding who did what destruction (Christians vs. Muslims) but a thinking reader who checks their sources' origins, fact checks and reads more than one source on an era for a balanced view (as all of us should), I think it is a fine addition to any study of the ancient world. I like how the author continually tied her information to its impact on the modern world. Included lots of "memory hooks" to help a student organize their understanding of the era in their mind.

Trumbell's 'Library of Alexandria'

This text is an excellent overview of the libraries history of contributions to the human condition. The illustrations are frequent and very lively additions to the work. I did notice two small details that don't fit with my knowledge of Greek history, but they are minor and need not be discussed here. Further, while some introductions function well for adults, this is not such an introduction; the material is really meant for adolescents, and, in this respect, it is wonderful.

All the grammar in a single textbook - yay

I had to have this as reference for a college class I took. It has 16 chapters, each with the usual new grammar concept, new vocabulary words and exercises that stress that grammar and vocab. Each has reading passages about Germany in German and dialogues that reinforce concepts in that chapter. It covers the basics and is a fine text book. But here is something super super cool: It covers all the grammar. So you can use it for German 1 and German 2. This makes it a good choice for college classes to teach from, and a good book to review on you own if you already know German but want to brush up.

One huge deficiency in this book was the lack of an appendix of grammar at the back. Instead I had to use the index to try to find the particular item of grammar I was trying to brush up on. This meant that I had to remember that name of the particular grammar concept that I wanted information on and then use the index. This was not so convenient. So if you get this text book you will also want to get a good grammar reference. On the other hand this is a good price for a textbook, and the added price of a German grammar reference can be absorbed.

I recommend using this text in colleges. I think that this book is meant to go through German 1 and 2, so this is going to appeal very much to students who will be glad to learn that they don't need a new expensive text book for German 2 next semester. In high schools, where each textbook is checked out to a student, there isn't a big advantage to having a single comprehensive text over 2 separate texts, and it would be better to use a two textbooks = two years system with textbooks that have a good grammar reference built in as an appendix.

If you are learning German on you own: This has a tape set (0395929490) and workbook (ISBN 0395909848). I think these are designed to give you extra practice outside of class, and not to teach you German by themselves.

Complete as it gets...

For the absolute beginner, this book (especially combined with the workbook, with exercises complete with answers in the back) is fabulous. IT DOES USE THE NEW REFORMED SPELLING, which is a PLUS PLUS PLUS. (In each chapter there are 2 vocabulary boxes with the vocab used in context within mini-dialogues, arranged by verb, noun, adj., idioms, etc. and grammar. (Be forewarned, don't attempt to swallow all the grammar in one chapter in one gulp, that's where the workbook comes in to test what you really know). There is a cultural section at the end of each chapter explaining German culture (women's movements, WWII, etc.) and also additional thematic vocabulary. The explanations are in English and are clear and easy to comprehend. The wonderful thing is that this book has an Einfuhrung, where the names of the letters, numbers, articles, formalities, and basics are printed out. The lively pictures are a great adjunct feature and IT'S NOT DRY, there is some personality in the instructions and dialogues. The characters in the dialogues have attitudes and emotions.
But the best part is that by the end, all the basic grammar you ever need to know is learned (unlike others where they stop at the imperfect, etc.) Certainly, the strong/weak verb table is not complete, but all the rules (but not all the exceptions, although the book still does a TERRIFIC job) are clearly explained. But hey, that's a lot to ask of a first-year course.
My suggestion if you are attempting to learn German by yourself is to get this book WITH the workbook (w/o the workbook you are certain not to catch errors in your learning). There is also a cassette and video set but that's optional. THE WORKBOOK DOES TEACH PRONUNCIATION (a little less clear to understand.)
Don't hesitate to buy this. I have researched it thoroughly. This is the ONE book you need to start you off. If you stick with it, you'll be sure to succeed.

exactly what it said. Arrived in decent condition, obviously used, but that was in the description when I ordered it so no problem there. In terms of the company that sent it, no issues. Arrived on time, did not need to activate their customer service. However, from a self-learner's point of view, this kind of textbook really needs the class to go with it. Its doable with this book, but very difficult. That being said, German is my 2nd language, didn't start trying to teach myself until I was almost 30. I found this helpful compared to Rosetta stone since some of the grammar rules are explained better. However, the best thing I've found so far has been the Fluenz program. Combined with this and with the Living Language sets I've made a ton of progress, but mostly due to the Fluenz.
