Delights
By An admirer of Saul
Every so often you go through a period of reading lacklustre books that make the lazy demon in you think of stopping, then you pick up a book like this and your thirst for the written word returns with a vengence!
I was recommended 'The Chosen' some years ago, and turned to it after just such a lull and it truly delights; its a great story well told that gives the reader an insight into the conflicts that lay within Judaism;Danny the orthadox Hassid and Rueven become friends after Danny injures Rueven in a baseball game. The story flows with wonderful imagry from the hospital with Mr Savo and Billy;the streets the two boys live in;the Hassidic home of Reb Saunders, the historical background of WW2 and the birth of Israel;how the mass murder of 6 million Jews brought on a re think of passive waiting for a messiah in a harsh and modern world.
This is great writing;up there with Bellow, Bashevis Singer, Malamud and Appelfeld.

The Chosen: Danny and Reuven's Interwoven Journey
By Moira Mitchell
The Chosen is a capturing story of two boys as they grow and mature throughout their friendship and into adulthood. Reuven Malter is a secular Jew while Danny Saunders is a Hasid. The two are naturally opposed by their religion and unleash their anger toward each other in what is no ordinary baseball game. When Reuven is hit in the eye by a powerful ball hit by Danny, Reuven is rushed to the emergency room. It is while Reuven is recovering from the accident in the hospital that he and Danny official meet and begin their interwoven journey.
Danny and Reuven soon realize that they are opposites from one another. Reuven wishes to become a rabbi after graduating from college, while his father hopes for him to become a mathematician. Contrastingly, Danny dreams of being a psychologist even though he is the rightful heir to becoming a Hasidic rabbi. They are also raised by fathers who have contrasting methods of bringing up their sons. Still, it is through these family difficulties, the devastating tolls of the Holocaust, conflicting religion, and Danny's own secret from his father, that create the powerful and unique bond between the two boys. Join them as they teach each other lessons they could not have learned anywhere else and grow into the young adults they strived to be.

Anna All Year Round, by Mary Downing Hahn

Eight-year-old Anna enjoys one exciting experience after another in this charming story set in Baltimore just before World War I. She gets a new winter coat that's even better than Rosa's, rollerskates down the steepest hill in the neighborhood, and rides the trolley all by herself. And she delights in the changes occurring in the world around her, as motorcars and electric lights appear for the first time on her street. Based on the childhood experiences of the author's mother, these heartwarming episodes touch on timeless themes of family, friends, and the wonders of growing up.

From Publishers Weekly
Hahn (Stepping on the Cracks) mines her mother's reminiscences of growing up in Baltimore before WWI to create this nostalgic chapter book. Though set in a bygone era of gas street lamps and horse-drawn delivery carts, these episodes in the year Anna turns nine have timeless themes. Anna's efforts to eavesdrop are thwarted, for example, when her mother and aunt speak in their native German to tell secrets, so she attempts to learn the language on her own. (Hahn includes a glossary of German words and phrases.) On a dare from her best friend, Charlie, Anna speeds down a cobblestone street on her roller skates and ends up with stitches. One of the most humorous chapters also delivers the greatest lesson: Anna throws herself a "surprise" birthday party after her mother strictly forbids having friends to the house; her aunt saves the party, but as punishment Anna has to go to her room without dinner. Children will recognize the personalities and rivalries of the neighborhood (e.g., snobby Rosa with the perfect coat and her sidekick Beatrice as foils for tomboyish Anna) and will seeing the similarities between Anna's time and their own. Final artwork not seen by PW. Ages 7-10.

From School Library Journal
Grade 2-4-Life in Baltimore in the years just before World War I might seem slow and dull to today's youngsters, but eight-year-old Anna experiences the same yearnings, disappointments, joys, and adventures that all children do. During the seasons described here, she struggles with long division; she outgrows her winter coat and longs for a red one just like the one belonging to her snobby friend Rosa; she asks Santa for an Erector set, though it is not considered a suitable present for a young lady; and she eavesdrops on her mother and aunts' conversations, only to be thwarted when the adults speak in German (a glossary of German terms is included). Hahn masterfully captures Anna's humiliation at wearing a coat that is too small, her thrill and fear during her fling as a daredevil roller skater, and the comforting sense of family that surrounds these everyday activities. De Groat depicts the period details-dress, transportation, etc.-and the characters' personalities all come to life through her soft, though vibrant pencil illustrations. Reading this book is like taking a quiet, peaceful carriage ride over the cobbled streets of an earlier time.

From Kirkus Reviews
Nothing very special happens in Hahn's beguiling slice-of-life novel, set in Baltimore at a time when gaslight illuminated the streets and commuters traveled by trolley. Eight-year-old Anna outgrows her old coat, dares to go down a steep hill on roller-skates, tricks her mother into giving her a birthday party, and plays tag with her friends. What makes the book stand up and shout are not the ordinary events Hahn delineates, but her powerful depiction of the childhood emotions that accompany the inevitable process of growing up. Anna is a great girl, earnest and well-meaning, full of grit, determination, and heart. The book, which is episodic, is divided into four sectionsone for every seasonand every chapter chronicles a brief incident in vivid, simple prose, ably highlighted by deGroat's straightforward black-and-white illustrations of the era. Life was different in 1913, but the core issues that children facewhether to cheat to save face, or to accept a dare that's too hardare timeless, and young readers should find Anna's experiences meaningful. Memories From Mom, But No Story
By A Customer
Let me start by saying that I am a big fan of author Mary Downing Hahn. I've read several of her books and enjoyed them all. So imagine my disappointment with this book which has no story, no plot, no drama. It does show an interesting look at the times her mother lived in (1913) and the type of home life she had. But it should have stayed as a personal account for her own family. With all her talents as a writer, why couldn't Ms. Hahn have given her readers a story, an adventure, or at least some conflict? This book can "set the scene" for readers who know nothing about pre-World War I times. But then they should go on to other more exciting books from this era such as "The Ornament Tree," "Over the Waves," or "In The Time of Angels."

Anna All Year Round
By A Customer
I thought that this book was very good. I think that children at any age can relate to the struggles that Anna faces with her mother, father, her aunt and uncle, her friends and school. I really enjoyed the whole setting of the book because it was around the time of WWI and this was the time when people did not have too much. I think all children will really enjoy this book.

Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia, by Lincoln P. Paine

Ships have always played an important role in shaping human destiny, and this comprehensive and very readable encyclopedia covers more than one thousand of the world's best-known and most significant vessels of every size and type. Each ship is described in a vivid short essay that captures its personality as well as its physical characteristics, construction, and history, from the drawing board to the scrap yard or museum. Even fictional ships and boats, such as the African Queen, are included. Two hundred illustrations show the grandeur and grace of oceangoing vessels, maps help the reader follow the tracks of the great seafarers and naval campaigns, and time lines offer a chronological perspective on archaeological sites, naval warfare, technology, exploration, and disasters at sea. Ships of the World is not only an invaluable reference but fascinating reading for anyone who has the slightest interest in history or who simply likes messing about in boats, whether on the water or from a comfortable chair at home.

Amazon.com Review
You don't have to be a maritime history buff--or even a sailor--to find Lincoln Paine's Ships of the World fascinating. Certainly no scholar or student of the history of ships will want to be without it: it consists of more than 1,000 alphabetical entries describing individual ships' histories and fates. Yet because of the author's flair for language and the skill with which he has made his selections, the book is a browser's delight--almost a short-story collection. Look up an entry on any celebrated vessel--the Titanic, the Monitor, the Lusitania--and you'll find an admirably concise history of the boat and the events that made it famous. But browsing turns up countless unexpected pleasures, from the story of the Politician (a freighter that ran aground in the Outer Hebrides, where its cargo of Scotch was efficiently plundered by locals) to that of Jacques Cousteau's Calypso. The hundreds of well-chosen black-and-white illustrations help bring the tales alive.

From Booklist
This book is a magnificent survey of several thousand years of river, lake, and open-ocean ships, from those that floated on the prehistoric Nile, through the centuries of sailing ships, to engine-driven monsters that carried airplanes to victory, to supertankers, such as the Exxon Valdez. Entries are alphabetical by name of ship, and many include illustrations, with a few in color.

Each entry gives statistical information--length, beam, and draft, in feet and meters; tonnage; crew and/or passenger complement; and other data, including date of commission. Then follows an essay, from a quarter-page to two pages or more, giving the history of the ship, its sometimes several changes of name and usage, and its final destiny, whether sunk, scrapped, blown up, or scuttled. One or more reference works are briefly listed at the end of each entry, with fuller data on each in the bibliography at the end.

Almost every well-known ship is here. There are entries for the historically significant HMS Beagle and Mayflower, luxury liners such as Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary, warships such as the Bismark and USS Constitution, and ships best known for disastrous voyages, such as RMS Titanic as well as Alvin, the submersible that found the Titanic wreck. Not every ship that ever sailed is included, of course. Hundreds of cruisers, submarines, troopships, and the like, on both Axis and Allied sides of World War II, are not given specific entries. However, an attempt is made to include at least one ship from each group; this is usually one that was historically important for some reason, such as the USS Maddox, a Sumner-class destroyer, which was involved in the Tonkin Gulf incident in 1964.

The section devoted to full-page or half-page colored illustrations is very fine. Many of these are paintings, since color photography is too new for most historic ships. A few of the ships that are pictured, such as the Mayflower and Columbus' Nina, are replicas. At the end of the volume is a glossary of nautical terms. There is also a listing of a hundred or so fictitious ships or boats, such as the African Queen, USS Caine, and HMS Pinafore. An extensive bibliography and an excellent index complete the work, which is highly recommended for public and academic libraries.

About the Author
Lincoln P. Paine, formerly editor of Sea History magazine and director of the Schooners Foundation, is a member of the national advisory board of the American Sail Training Association. He lives by the sea with his wife, Allison, and two daughters, who bare the names of famous ships. He currently lives in Portland, Maine.

Outstanding maritime reference...a ship-lover's dream
By Dale Dworak
This is the best addition to my collection of nautical/maritime books since my purchase of the Oxford Companion to Ships and the Sea. I've already spent many hours reading the different ship histories and learning more about ships I've read about since I was a young boy. From Nelson's Victory to Luckner's Seeadler and Dewey's Olympia, Paine's books has them all. Concise, well-written histories that dwell on the human as well as the technical, make this a must-have for any naval or maritime history buff's shelf. Just a few quibbles. The Essex class carrier U.S.S. Franklin was probaby named after the Benjamin Franklin and not the Battle of Franklin. Every other Essex class is name after something from the Revolutionary War, so I would assume that the Franklin is too. Also, I wished Paine had included the U.S.S. Pensylvania, the 120-gun wooden warship built for the Navy that was burned at Norfolk during the Civil War. I also was surprised to see H.M.S Kelly left out. But these are minor quibbles with a splendid book that has earned a place of honor in my collection

An outstanding reference source.
By Ned Middleton
At first glance, the prospective buyer might easily dismiss this work as just another book about ships of the world. After all, the rather innocuous front cover shows part of an historic painting of a naval engagement from 1794 above which are nothing more than the book's title and author's name. Behind that, however, lies an altogether excellent product.

As with all reference works which cross my desk, I began by browsing through the book, pausing whenever I saw one of the many historic black and white pictures until I found the colour section in the middle. Whilst I was pleased to see Turner's famous painting "The Fighting Téméraire" had been included, I was absolutely stunned to see the amount of detail on the stern of the Wasa which had survived over 300 years underwater. This was the Swedish warship which, after sinking on her maiden voyage in 1628, had been preserved in deep mud until raised in 1960. It was not until I saw this picture that I was aware of the incredible extent of that preservation.

In a world of publishing where the word `encyclopaedia' is used far to frequently to describe works which are no such thing, this book is exactly as described by its title. With many, many vessels listed in strict alphabetical order, this is a first-class reference source for anyone with even a passing interest in ships. There is no bias towards any specific country as the reader moves between the ships - sometimes famous, sometimes important protatypes, sometimes just different, of different nations.

Of course, no work can include every vessel which ever went to sea but, with something in excess of 7,000 significant ships and submarines included here, this product gets very close. Altogether, the more we who study ships learn, the more there is to learn and it is books like this which provide the real teaching.

Whilst I am surprised at not having come across this work before today, may I suggest you grab a copy while you can because there will come a time when you are glad you did.

very good with exceptions

At first glance, this is a brilliant resource. At second glance, a few holes appear. There are some historical ships missing: USS Forrestal, CV59, commissioned in the mid-1950s as the first super-carrier built specifically for jets. USS Enterprise, CVN65, the world's first nuclear carrier and, along with the Long Beach and Truxton, the first surface ship to circle the globe without refueling. On the other hand, many vessels of marginal historical import get ink. In an error of fact, USS Wahoo, a WW2 sub, was sunk by its own torpedo, not by a Japanese patrol plane, as Paine reports. All of this makes the reader what else is missing or just plain wrong. Still in all, a very good book, and very well written.

Clear, practical guide with helpful text and illustrations
By Jodi
I recently moved into a house with a yard and a variety of trees, vines, and Roses. I have read large gardening references before in attempts to prune planter box trees and gardens, but never walked away with the sense that I could actually prune and train my plants successfully. This book began with definitions of terminology, tool selection, and provided clear text and multiple helpful drawings and pictures all geared towards the intelligent adult. It addreses the unique properties of the various fruit trees, rose bushes, vines, and shrubs, and gives advice as to when to hire and how to choose an arborist. It helped me understand the impact of pruning and has made me a more educated 'tree' observer.
I cannot see myself ever needing to buy another pruning book! I would highly recommend this for complete and straight forward pruning guide.

Easy to understand, complete guide to pruning.
By CJ Steeb
I was pulling out books from my library to write a newspaper article on pruning and remembered Barbara's book. I was delighted to find everything I needed for the home gardener. Her descriptions and illustrations take the scarry out of pruning. She also explains when it is best left to the professionals and how to pick one. Great little no nonsence book.

Kingbird Highway: The Story of a Natural Obsession That Got a Little Out of Hand, by Kenn Kaufman

At sixteen, Kenn Kaufman dropped out of the high school where he was student council president and hit the road, hitching back and forth across America, from Alaska to Florida, Maine to Mexico. Maybe not all that unusual a thing to do in the seventies, but what Kenn was searching for was a little different: not sex, drugs, God, or even self, but birds. A report of a rare bird would send him hitching nonstop from Pacific to Atlantic and back again. When he was broke he would pick fruit or do odd jobs to earn the fifty dollars or so that would last him for weeks. His goal was to set a record - most North American species seen in a year - but along the way he began to realize that at this breakneck pace he was only looking, not seeing. What had been a game became a quest for a deeper understanding of the natural world. Kingbird Highway is a unique coming-of-age story, combining a lyrical celebration of nature with wild, and sometimes dangerous, adventures, starring a colorful cast of characters.

Amazon.com Review
As ornithologist Kenn Kaufman recounts in his lively memoir Kingbird Highway, he's managed to do what other birders only dream of doing: take a year and chase winged creatures from one end of the country to another. The year in question was 1973, when Kaufman was 19 years old, and a few dollars and an outstretched thumb could go a long way. Armed with binoculars, notebook, and the blessing of birder patron saint Roger Tory Peterson, Kaufman set out to capture the record for most species spotted in a single year. He came close, closing with 666 species sighted from Alaska to Florida and back again. More important, he racked up a lifetime's worth of adventures on the road. These stories form the heart of his book, a narrative in which spotted redshanks, white-eared hummingbirds, marbled murrelets, and black-capped gnatcatchers are among the chief supporting players.

From Booklist
Kaufman set out on his first solo birding trip when he was 16 years old, on a Greyhound bus, starting in Wichita, Kansas, and ending up in a California jail, for it was illegal for minors to be in that state without adult supervision. So began his quest to set a record: spotting the most North American bird species in a one-year period. Kaufman did just that in 1973, sighting what was then a record 229 species on a grueling hitchhiking trip that took him from Puget Sound to the Florida Keys and the Dry Tortugas in the Gulf of Mexico. Other birding trips followed, from North Dakota to Alaska, from Alaska to Maine, from Maine to Mazatlan in Mexico, and from Arizona to New Jersey. On those arduous trips, too, the author hitchhiked, stopping to work at odd jobs to earn a few dollars. His book is a fascinating memoir of an obsession with birds. George Cohen

From Kirkus Reviews
You may not have found your loins quivering at the thought of a rose-throated becard, but Kaufman (Lives of North American Birds, not reviewed) has, and here he sings sweetly about the birder's ineffable fascination with all things feathered. By the age of 16, Kaufman knew what he wanted from life: to look at birds. So he dropped out of school--with the blessings of his admirably tolerant parents--and hit the road in search of birds. With very little money, he needed ingenuity to survive. He discovered, for instance, that a box of Little Friskies cat food could sustain him for a week. He gradually encounterd a subculture of birding aficionados and joined their ranks. In 1973, when he turned 19, he decided to embark on a so-called Big Year: to count as many species as he could manage in a year's time. The book is largely taken up with that quest. There are, of course, plenty of birds here, from the everyday to the extremely rare, but Kaufman also provides--in a winning, plain-spoken prose style--a Baedeker that covers the fine art of hitchhiking, crackling landscapes, and sharp profiles of other birders (as with any subculture, the personalities ranged from the repulsive to the sublime). The listing begins to pale by the end of the year: ``Views of birds are measured in milliseconds, in which bird songs are classified instantly, and then ignored, in which no precious moment of daylight could be wasted on aesthetics.'' Yet one can only marvel at how determined he was (he eventually counted 666 species) and at the purity of his enterprise, and join him in regretting that the compilation of lists has shifted ``away from knowledge and planning and experience, toward contacts and hotlines and money.'' For Kaufman, the pleasure now lies not in lists but in simply watching attentively. He makes us understand the joys of both in this frank, passionate book. I just keep reading it.
By Christopher Moellering
I'm not one to re-read books. This one I have read multiple times and will again. It is a great story, richly told of a teenager chasing birds, his dreams and his life's calling around North America in the early 1970's.

There are several poingant scenes in this book that appeal to me as a birder and as a human being. Probably the best is his reaction to seeing the girl who became his wife (for a while)waiting for him to take a ferry in New England.

If you have the slightest interest in nature or birds and like good books, buy this one and read it. You won't be disappointed.

Update--it's 10 years since my review, and I'm sitting here with my second copy of this book (first one lost in a move) on my table being read yet again.

Kenn's writing is simple, yet descriptive. To anyone who has spent much time outdoors, the scenes unfold easily before you. The insights into the mind of a bird-obsessed teenager are accurate and believable without being self-aggrandizing. He never looses sight of the reality that birding is a rather arbitrary game. He chronicles the birth of "birding" without giving himself any credit.

I may well find myself reading this one to my grandchildren someday.

Great book for birders
By Karen Potts
Kenn Kaufman began birding at an early age, and as a young teenager he hid his "geeky" habit from his friends. Eventually, as he became older, he realized that there was a birding fraternity and he began to bird with others who loved it as much as he did. At 16, with his parents' blessing, he dropped out of school and began doing cross-country birding by hitchiking around the country. His knowledge of birds grew and his contacts with other birders increased. In 1973 he decided to go for a Big Year, that is a year in which he attempted to break the record for most birds seen in a year. The pace of Kaufman's quest was amazing and he relates his adventures in an interesting and down-to-earth style. Towards the end of his Big Year, Kaufman begins to question his own motives for building up his list and his introspection brings a new maturity to him and his methods of birding. This is a great book for any bird enthusiast.

Hawks in Flight: Second Edition, by David Sibley, Pete Dunne

Among the world's most popular birds, hawks can be some of the most difficult birds to identify. They're most often seen flying high above and at a distance.

In the first edition of Hawks in Flight, Pete Dunne, David Sibley, and Clay Sutton presented a holistic method of hawk identification, using general body shape, the way they move, and the places they are most likely to be seen.

The new edition of the book that Roger Tory Peterson called a "landmark" integrates an array of carefully selected photographs, David Sibley's superb illustrations, and a clear, information-packed text and takes raptor identification to a higher level. This edition covers all of the raptors that breed in North America, including those with limited ranges in Florida, the Southwest, and Texas.

Picking up where its predecessor ended by including two decades of raptor identification refinement, Hawks in Flight summarizes and places in users’ hands an identification skill set that used to take years to master. The unique alchemy of Dunne, Sibley, and Sutton—including their collective experience of more than one hundred years watching hawks—make this book a singular achievement and a must-have for anyone interested in hawks.

Big help for this raptor enthusiast!
By Idaho John
My primary interest is watching and identifying raptors. I started out with the Peterson's guides as a child and was thrilled when the "Peterson Field Guide to Hawks of North America" was published (see my review). Then last year I started using Jeff Ligouri's "Hawks at a Distance." And recently added a copy of this volume - "Hawks in Flight," 2nd Edition - which has been expanded to include raptors in western North America. I have found it to be very useful. Specifically - Pete Dunne describes characteristics about each specie in simple and engaging language. Next - the photographs in the book (by Sutton, Ligouri and others) were well chosen in presenting key profiles. Finally, I find that David Sibley has the ability to educate me to certain specifics with his drawings - for me it has been posture. Between his "The Sibley Field Guide to Birds of Western North America," and this book, I am beginning to appreciate how much information he packs into one of his pen and ink drawings. Added together, the combination makes it easier for me to get a lock on what I am seeing in the field.

No one guide has been "the answer," for me when it comes to identifying raptors. I seem to need a variety of references. This is a great addition and could stand alone. However if I can encourage new birders here, get a variety of guides so that you can check with various resources and are not stuck with one. Not being sure of your ID is part of the challenge (and fun) of being a birder. Books like this add to your ID tool box. Highly recommended!

Hawks in Flight: Second Edition compared to First Edition
By Steven J. D'Amato
I had Pete Dunne's first edition of Hawks in Flight and this was an improvement regarding text. This was also an improvement regarding the layout of the book - each raptor species 'chapter' starts on a page, whereas in the first edition, some species descriptions actually started midway on a page from the end of the previous raptor's description (I guess to save paper?). The photographs of the different raptor species in the different age and/or color morphs are in color in the second edition whereas they were in black-and-white in the first. This helps a great deal.

best book for hawkwatchers ever
By Jeffry Wilkinson
I have three other books on identifying hawks to help my work counting hawks in migration on hawk hill above the golden gate bridge with the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory. This is the best. The words stick in your brain, the pictures are magnificent to look at and lead you to gain the knowledge to tell the difference between the species. Accipters are the hardest to identify not as accipiters but whether they are Cooper's or Sharp shinned because the two look so much alike. If this is your problem too then this is the book for you.

disappointing flaw in otherwise solid field guide
By audrey frances
There are approximately one million species of animals on our planet; about three quarters are insects; and approximately 40% of those are beetles. There are 30,000 kinds of beetle in North America. They are plentiful and varied -- a real joy to observe or collect. This Peterson field guide begins with two chapters on collecting and preserving beetles, and then delves into their identification. An anatomical flow chart on the endpages directs you to the various beetle families, and there you will find a physical description, similar families, and information about numbers, range, habits, collecting methods and examples. There are about 600 line drawings and 65 color plates.

This is a solid field guide, but the meager percentage of color pictures is problematic. Beetles are quite colorful and that should be the most salient identifying characteristic, but neither the black & white drawings nor the often color-free descriptions help in that regard -- a real weakness for a guide to these beautiful insects. I would rather pay more for an all-color guide.

Bogart: A Life in Hollywood, by Jeffrey Meyers

"When a man's partner's killed, he's supposed to do something about it." "Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine!" "Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." The voice is unmistakable. Humphrey Bogart, the most popular American actor of the twentieth century, appealed equally to men and women. Jeffrey Meyers has written the most complete, the most discerning, and the most authoritative life. His powerful research has tracked down all sorts of material previously unknown. Humphrey Bogart was the scion of a rich and socially prominent New York family. His father was a surgeon who in later years declined into drug addiction; his mother, a successful portrait painter who used her obedient son as a model. Humphrey was a poor student and welcomed the interruption to his education of World War I. He played dozens of roles in Broadway plays in the 1920s, mostly in short runs, until he created Duke Mantee in "The Petrified Forest," which typecast him in Warner Brothers gangster films for a decade. He broke through to stardom after he teamed up with John Huston in The Maltese Falcon, and took his place in the Hollywood firmament with the legendary acting ensemble of Casablanca. He survived three tempestuous and childless marriages (his third wife, Mayo Methot, whom he nicknamed "Sluggy," went so far as to stab him), but at the height of his career he found happiness, and children, with the youthful Lauren Bacall. Jeffrey Meyers, the distinguished literary biographer, enlarges the scope of his biographical gift by concentrating on an actor. He cuts through Hollywood hype and gossip to get at the human and artistic qualities that made Bogart great. The biographer of Hemingway sees in Bogart many of the characteristics shared by the supreme novelist and treats Bogart as a professional actor, conveying his ways of working, his dedication and concentration on the set, his love of privacy, his caustic wit and plain life as well as his stoical and tragic way of dying.

Amazon.com Review
With a dozen biographies under his belt, the veteran Jeffrey Meyers took a round-up-the-usual-suspects approach to research, unlike the more comprehensive Sperber/Lax collaboration (see above). His much briefer book has more attitude and more gossip--claiming, for example, that Bogart's wife, Lauren Bacall, had an affair with Frank Sinatra while Bogart lay dying. It also boasts a stronger point of view: Meyers opens by drawing parallels between Bogart and Ernest Hemingway, and closes with a consideration of what the posthumous "Bogart cult" says about American values.

From Library Journal
Much of the literature on Humphrey Bogart focuses on the source of his enduring appeal, and until now there has not been an in-depth biography. The clear winner between these two titles is the Sperber-Lax collaboration. Sperber (Murrow: His Life and Times, Freundlich, 1986) did all the interviews and wrote a first version of the manuscript; after her death, Lax (Woody Allen, LJ 5/1/91) finished the writing. Sperber's more than 200 interviews and time spent in the Warner Brothers studio archives paid off. This model biography should become the standard study of Bogart. Meyers (Robert Frost, LJ 4/15/96) is taking on his first Hollywood subject, and it shows. His descriptions and analyses of the studio system don't carry the authority they should. He does add interesting anecdotes to the record, but only the largest collections will want to purchase both books.?Thomas Wiener, "Satellite DIRECT"

From Booklist
Veteran literary biographer Meyers (Frost and Hemingway are among his previous subjects) moves to the popular arts with this entertaining account of the life and work of Humphrey Bogart. The facts of Bogart's life are familiar to most movie fans--upper-class childhood, Broadway career as a pretty boy ("Tennis anyone?"), gangster roles in Hollywood, breakthrough in Casablanca, marriage to Lauren Bacall, death from cancer in his fifties--and while Meyers competently takes us through these events, he recognizes that a new life of Bogart must offer something more. As in his previous work, that something more comes not so much from new revelations as from Meyers' ability to synthesize great masses of divergent material into a unified whole that provides new perspective. This is especially true in terms of Bogart's life as an actor. Juxtaposing Bogart the stage-trained, consummate craftsman against the popular image of Bogey the hard-boiled cult hero ("The world is two drinks behind"), Meyers carefully sorts image from reality and, most convincingly, shows how the two merge to make the man. This is a Hollywood bio, though, so there's bound to be a little dishing: the revelation, backed up by sources both named and unnamed, that Bacall was having an affair with Frank Sinatra before her husband's death will provide grist for the talk-show mill. Though Meyers spends a bit too much time in summarizing the plots of Bogart's films, his critical opinions are insightful, and he offers some tantalizing insider nuggets, especially concerning Bogey's career-long battles with Jack Warner. All in all, this is a fine reassessment of a "remarkably sane and honest" actor whose "built-in shit detector" remained finely tuned throughout 25 years in Hollywood. Bill Ott

Bogart: A Life in Hollywood
By A Customer
A very well written biography of the legendary Humphrey Bogart? Sounds like a daunting task, but Meyers brings the man behind the myth to life, beautifully.Meyers draws from a vast array of factual material and accounts (with excellent footnotes chronicling what was said when, where and by whom), and sometimes even adds his own caustic wit into the mix (just as Bogie would have liked it!) but he always manages to stay objective and to the point. He avoids gossip, but does not shy away from exploring the very interesting personal facts and details about Bogie's off-screen life--all of those things that bring the legend to life and portray him for the man that he was--very human--and rare. The book also features a great bibliography. A very informative and intelligently written biography that I know I will keep refering back to again and again through the years, as I catch up on all of his films, (which are also described--and explained here in great eye-opening detail on the studios at the time, directors actors...and the infamous Jack Warner of Warner Bros.) A terrific read--I highly recommend it!

A "hard case" from childhood through death.
By Richard Arant
The uniquely direct style of Jeffrey Meyers is a most suitable tool for examining this uniquely blunt man. Some startling parallels exist in the lives of Bogart and Hemingway. Bogart's bravery in facing a painful death is remarkably well-told and provides the most important insights into the man's inner soul. Bogart would no doubt be pleased, amused and enraged at this in-depth treatment of his life and legacy.

Great Biography - Lots of Detail
By Jack Ridley
This is a great biography of Bogart that blends his off screen real character with descriptions of his more than 50 movies.

Bogart is a cultural icon that we think of as being remote, a combination cool tough guy, but with a soft heart. It is hard to keep it all in perspective since the Bogart persona was all an act by a skilled and professional actor. At Warner Brothers and elsewhere he liked to follow a strictly 9:00am to 6:00pm schedule, resisted travel to exotic locations, had a habit of learning his lines in the morning, shooting in the afternoon, and then going home at 6:00 pm. He kept regular hours except during periods of crisis or between movies. Bogart had a slightly volatile personality and was prone to outbreaks of profanity, but he was not a rowdy who would start fist fights in bars or similar. Also, he was not impressed with wealth since his New York parents were well off and the money from his fame did not go to his head. He was often the center of attention in public, but also he was a very private person who enjoyed the solitude of his sailing boats in seclusion off the coast of California, or games of chess, or just staying at home. Like his fans, he sometimes confused his on screen and off screen personalities. He was a chain smoker and frequent drinker who eventually fell prey to throat cancer, but he continued to smoke until he died.

His story is aptly told here by a well know biography author Jeffrey Myers and it is a good book. It is well written, seemingly well researched, engrossing, and an entertaining read. I read the 400 pages cover to cover. It is very entertaing for Bogart fans. The book is slightly uneven but it is mostly great reading. There is a lot of detail in the book including many quotes from old letters, memos, and recollections of telephone calls. The presen book fills in a lot of detail on the early years, the behind the scenes action with the dynamic director Howard Hawks, his love affairs and girl friends, the first three marriages, then Lauren Bacall, fellow actor James Cagney, Bette Davis, writer and director John Huston, Edward G Robinson, relations with Warner Brothers and Jack Warner, and on and on.

The book progresses roughly in chronological order and it has chapters that cover different periods and different movies, including lots of details on conflicts and collaborations, and what Bogart thought of the factory like production of the Warner lot B movies with his name attached - that he was forced to make under contract and under protest. We learn about his approach to acting, and what he was like to work with by fellow actors such as Mary Astor, and how Ingrid Bergman was in awe. We learn how he handles success, his insecurity with Bacall, the drinking, his complex and talented abilities, and his volatile personality. The book has lots and lots of stories.

The author walks us through a number of major films almost scene by scene and gives summaries of less well known films. He explains the double meanings of some lines that are insider jokes, and what particular actors thought of their lines, or where the lines came from. Some of Bacall's most famous lines came from her first screen test. Other famous Bogart movie lines were written just moments before shooting, or they contained subtle and hidden jabs at Warner management, or were inspired or almost copied from earlier movies. It is hard to believe that the movies such as Casablanca were made in 8 to 10 weeks essentially factory style, movie after movie, and that this could produce such on screen magic. In any case many of the productions are described including the filming of African Queen on its remote river setting - with one photo of that production.

The chapter on the movie Petrified Forest is revealing. It describes his first big success with the big 1930s star Bette Davis in that movie and his subsequent success as a tough guy in a movie market craving tough guys such as Edward G Robinson. Also, the opening part of this chapter contains a wonderful description of Bogart and his father at the time of his father's death. Similarly there is an excellent chapter of John Huston, one of Bogart's best friends, a man who was also married many times and had a similarly complex life and was overflowing with talent.

It is all compelling stuff for Bogart fans and by the way there are a number of black and white photos of Bogart and his family and friends, plus the book has an extensive 30 pages of notes including a
