The Cay and Related Readings (Literature Connections), by Theodore Taylor

From Wikipedia: Theodore Taylor (June 24, 1921, Statesville, North Carolina, USA - October 26, 2006, Laguna Beach, California, USA) was an American author of more than 50 fiction and non-fiction books for young adult readers, including The Cay, The Weirdo (winner of the 1992 Edgar Award for Best Young Adult Mystery), Ice Drift, Timothy of the Cay, The Bomb, Sniper, and Rogue Wave.[1] ~~~ The Cay, Taylor's story of a racially prejudiced white boy stranded with a black man, took only three weeks to complete, and has become perhaps the most beloved of his young adult novels. It has seen worldwide sales in the millions. Taylor based the character of the boy in his book on a childhood playmate. "The one thing I remembered about [him] was that his mother had taught him to hate black people and to hate them with a passion," Taylor once told a reporter from the Los Angeles Times. In the book, the boy sheds his racist views as he learns to admire and respect the black man who rescues him from the ocean. For a short period of time The Cay was banned[citation needed] and was classified as racist. ~~~ The Cay, winner of 11 literary awards, including the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award, "...of which I'm the proudest, since the book was deemed worthy of being on a shelf with Alice In Wonderland...", was a Universal film presentation starring James Earl Jones. Now in print in 14 foreign countries, the story of young "Phe-leep" and old "Timothy" has passed 4,000,000 copies in publication, worldwide. ~~~ The Maldonado Miracle and The Teetoncey Trilogy, chronicling the remote, quaint Outer Banks of North Carolina, quickly followed the success of The Cay. Among his titles are Sniper, Maria, The Hostage, The Weirdo, winner of the 1992 Edgar Allen Poe Award; Sweet Friday Island, another suspense story. ~~~ In autumn, 1993, Timothy Of The Cay, prequel-sequel to the original tale of survival and prejudice was published by Harcourt Brace.

Good and bad
By A Customer
The main strength of the book is its large amount of interesting and largely error-free problems. Unfortunately, some of the more advanced material isn't really well explained. A good example is the book's coverage of particle-in-a-box: it's covered well enough for a beginning student to solve some problems, but without the more thorough follow up you get in a quantum class, you're just pushing symbols. The same goes for many of the other, somewhat more advanced topics in the book - MO theory, gas dynamics, etc.
It may have made pchem and inorganic a little easier, but it made for frustrating reading at the time.

Great BOOK for first time studying. EXCELLENT for revising
By Alan Mond
CHEMISTRY STUDENTS: This book is great for studying. It is error-free, approved by a lot of teachers. PLENTY of stuff for High school. I wouldn't know for College, although it is very complete.
READ IT, it's a MUST

Chemical Principles
By A Customer
I am using this book for a General Chemistry class in college. I have found it somehwat helpful, but overall, there are better text books. Zumdhal does a good job explaining the basic principles of chemistry, but it is dry and extremely boring, and in some cases inaccurate (ie, the table of Ksp values does not agree with any other that I have found)

The Little Red Hen Book & Cassette (Paul Galdone Classics), by Joanna C. Galdone, Paul Galdone

Little Red Hen is a time-tested cautionary tale about how we reap what we sow. When the hen asks a cat, dog, and mouse for help planting some wheat, she gets no takers: "‘Not I!’ said the cat. ‘Not I!’ said the dog. ‘Not I!’ said the mouse." They won’t water, cut, or grind the wheat . . . or help bake a cake with it, either. So guess who eats the cake by herself in the end? The Caldecott Honor artist Paul Galdone’s delightfully detailed ink and wash illustrations—packed with charming details—add plenty of sly humor to the well-loved story that not only offers a sage message but also shows children what it takes to make a cake from the ground up!

Review
"The familiar story of the busy little hen and her three lazy friends is delightfully illustrated with pictures that have color and vitality, the humor of the story is extracted in full and most evident in the faces of the dog, cat, and mouse. The setting is a dilapidated farmhouse, and the text and pictures are nicely correlated: Galdone at his best." The Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books

"Every mother has her day, and the freeloading cat, dog and mouse their comeuppance, in fresh, expressive pictures that do full justice to the enduring tale. . . . The industrious hen provides the action, and it's all played out in a minutely realized dilapidated old farmhouse and a sunny yard that fairly leaps with wheat and weeds and flowers." Kirkus Reviews with Pointers

"This imaginative rendition will surely help sustain the popularity of this old favorite." School Library Journal, Starred

This book has caused me great suffering.
By A Customer
I am a sophomore in highschool taking an AP class with this book. It has a lot of information, which I guess is a good thing if you are reading this for your own personal gain rather than being tested on it. However, it is so dense that it is difficult to pick up key ideas. Every piece of information is important on some level, and the tests I take, which my teacher got along with this book, also treat every fact as important. I wouldn't mind reading this book if I wasn't expected to have a photographic memory but it just doesn't do a good job of helping me understand key ideas in history. Well, if you have to read this in your history class I hope you have a good teacher to guide you along in the reading. Otherwise.... I hope your memory is better than mine!!

The earth and its people: a global history
By A Customer
Excellent book for senior high school-college-undergraduate studies, covering the broad field of world history. The text is structured in such a manner as to suit both brief studies of various areas and times, as well as more in depth, long term programs. A fascinating assortment of primary source excerpts have been included, from earliest human societies to issues facing humanity in the contemporary period. Though the text has a slight Western emphasis, it covers non-Western civilisations quite well.
Be prepared though for extensive reading. The complete set is very large, but shouldn't be an obstacle for those with a passion for both general and obscure history!

The Best American Short Stories 1996, by John Edgar Wideman

Each fall The Best American Short Stories provides a fresh showcase for this rich and unpredictable form. Selected from an unusually wide variety of publications, John Edgar Wideman's choices for 1996 place stories from esteemed national magazines alongside those from some of the smallest and most innovative literary journals. Dazzling new work from favorite authors includes Mary Gordon's" Intertextuality," in which a sentence by Proust propels the narrator into an intricate portrait of her Irish American grandmother. From Robert Olen Butler comes the wry and warm tale " Jealous Husband Returns in Form of Parrot," in which a man learns the consequences of marital distrust. Alice Adams employs her customary finesse to contrast the stinging vulnerability of early adolescence with the burdens and pleasures of midlife. Including contributions from Joyce Carol Oates, Lynn Sharon Schwartz, Rick Bass, and an array of stunning new talent, The Best American Short Stories 1996 is a rewarding, en

From Publishers Weekly
While some installments of this annual anthology could more accurately be titled The Best Short Stories Published by the New Yorker," many of this year's selections are culled from more obscure literary magazines, with a number of new voices standing alongside series regulars such as Joyce Carol Oates and Alice Adams. Among the more established writers, a standout is Jamaica Kincaid's "In Roseau," a tale of a girl who gets involved in an erotic triangle with a married couple. Two writers who have won critical acclaim without yet reaching the wide audience they deserve weigh in with very impressive pieces: Stuart Dybeck offers a surreal yet oddly coherent story of love, loss and Chinese food in "Paper Lantern"; while Melanie Rae Thon's "Xmas, Jamaica Plain" demonstrates her considerable gift for capturing a character's voice. Few of the new writers that Wideman includes hold their own against their better-known counterparts; an exception is Junot Diaz, whose "Ysrael" is a fierce and unblinking story of a disfigured boy who wears a mask and the other children determined to see beneath it. But other newer writers, such as Jason Brown and William Lychak, seem in their different ways to be prime examples of the sort of middle-of-the-road fiction produced by M.F.A. programs: dutifully well-crafted stories whose content is derivative and uninspired. Overall, this is an engaging collection, though one that provides scant evidence for the existence of a new generation of talented short story writers.

From Library Journal
This year's short story annual from Houghton has less of a "round up the ususal suspects" feel than previous editions. Though Rick Bass, Jamaica Kincaid, and the ubiquitous Joyce Carol Oates make appearances, it is the debut authors who stand out from the crowd. Junot Diaz, the most highly trumpeted talent of the season and author of the collection Drown (LJ 8/96) makes his first appearance in this collection. Set in the Domenican Republic, his "Ysrael" is the story of two brothers who torment a disfigured boy. In Jason Brown's "Driving the Heart," about a man whose job it is to drive organs for transplant to distant hospitals, the tight prose plays off Brown's wound-up protagonist in convincing fashion. Melanie Rae Thon's heart-rending "X-Mas, Jamaica Plain" features a young prostitute's reminiscence of her friend's suicide. Dan Chaon's "Fitting Ends" is another impressive debut. Stuart Dybek checks in with "Paper Lantern," an intricately layered story of desire that shines as the best. Guest editor John Edgar Wideman (The Cattle Killing, LJ 7/95) does an good job of explaining his selection criteria and goals for the collection in his introduction, as well as bemoaning the pose of objectivity as "a useless fiction." Recommended for all collections.?Adam Mazmanian, "Library Journal"

From Booklist
Though it is possible that none of the stories here will make it into later anthologies of literature or course syllabi, with this collection, readers of fiction have an outstanding cross-section of short fiction currently being published in North America and some sketches of what its more notable practitioners have to say about their writing. This year's stories are wide ranging, from the recollections of a woman's childhood sexual relationship with an adult to the ambitions of a now-communist, now-anticommunist sketch artist in postwar Malaya to the revealing and anguished letters of a father (in nineteenth-century America) to his son, who has abandoned home for an apocalypse-expecting, world-renouncing religious encampment. Wideman's valuable introduction not only seeks to dismantle the iconic status anthologies like this sometimes confer on stories, thus pointing us toward other stories, it also voices a claim for literature's potentially "special, subversive, radically democratic role" in exposing us to the "differences" outside the commercialized mainstream and getting us to address them. Wideman zips up the BASS series with a multicultural slant.
By A Customer
After last year's disastrous edition of this distinguished series, John Edgar Wideman puts it back on track with an eclectic and challenging potpourri of contemporary fiction. In 1984's edition, editor John Updike complained in his introduction that a cultural sameness had befallen the work he seleced from--middle class white folks struggling with identity and life circumstances (he compared it unfavorably to the 1934 edition, where he noted a good deal more pluralism in cultures and situations raised, and blamed magazine editors for not publishing more broadly). Well, Wideman has finally pushed this series over the line by keeping his fictional antennae up for alternative cultures, ethnic or otherwise. Although he only chose 6 stories from the slicks (as opposed to "little" magazines), I thought they had the edge this year. Five stories reprinted hit my favorite list, three of them from slicks: Stuart Dybek's hallucinatory treatment of the fiery eroticism of everyday life in "Paper Lantern" (The New Yorker); Angela Patrinos's heartbreaking portrayal of a female drifter's job as an fine art school's nude model in "Sculpture I" (The New Yorker), and Stephen Dixon's wrenching stream of consciousness evocation of the few days immediately following the loss of a man's young wife to cancer in "Sleep" (Harper's). From the small mags, two that really caught my eye were William Lychack's clever "A Stand of Fables" (Quarterly West), a magic realist updating of a traditional literary form, and Dan Chaon's "Fitting Ends" (TriQuarterly), a tragic tale of a boy whose pointless death later affects the lives of his parents, brother, and brother's family. Not among my favorites but liked by students in my creative writing class include stories by Butler, Oates, Gaylan, Lewis, Schwartz, and Thon (though the latter split the class--some loved it while others hated it). Overall the stories this year did not seem eccentrically selected, or part of an editor's personal hobbyhorse about what fiction should do or be. Minimalism seems to be dying, and an "anything goes" gaminess returning to the contemporary short story. That might bother some readers, but still leaves quite a few of us. As usual a couple of stories got in that I hated (Brown's and Adams's), but that's just me. I recommend this book for its mix of styles and up to date report on what short fiction writers are up to in the trenches of publication.

--my viewpoint: So many of these are great works--for both mind and the deep heart-of heart that H. Klemp writes about. Wideman is tuned in to the best of this form!

An interesting perspective on being American
By A Customer
The content of this book is derived primarily from first-person narratives and other primary source historical documents. These writings offer the reader a great deal to consider when thinking about the role of Americans in history. The narratives are moving and thought provoking, and really force the reader to reconsider what it really means to be an American. Questions abound about why we aren't told these stories in school, particularly regarding the role this country has played in the lives of other nations. A real "based on a true story" book!

Five Stars
By P. Rivera
Book was as advertised - in excellent condition - service was quick. Thank you. I selected this title to add to my genealogy library because it offered the best coverage of the historiographical issues together with an excellent range of primary source materials. Taken together this title will give someone tracing his or her family history a sense of the importance of the historical context.

Good Book but Too Expensive
By G. Hartman
I used this book about four years ago in an upper-division college course and really enjoyed it. However, I see that the paperback version now costs well over $60. Not sure why the price of the book increased so dramatically. However, because of the cost, I will not use it for my class in the spring.

Tuesday, by David Wiesner

A Caldecott classic celebrating twenty years in print.

David Wiesner received the 1991 Caldecott Medal for Tuesday. In the years that followed, he went on to receive two more Caldecotts, and Tuesday went on to sell half a million copies in the United States and to be published in a dozen foreign countries. Now, with remarkable advances in the technology of color reproduction, the original artwork for Tuesday is being reproduced anew, for an edition even more faithful to the palette and texture of David Wiesner’s watercolor paintings. The whimsical account of a Tuesday when frogs were airborne on their lily pads will continue to enchant readers of all ages.

Amazon.com Review
David Weisner has allowed his imagination to run free in Tuesday, and the result is a wondrous and mysterious picture book that mixes the ordinary with the unimaginable. He's merged his talent with the palette and his penchant for odd perspective to create a book where frogs careen through suburbia on flying lily pads, startling witnesses and spooking a dog. And that's just for starters. Tuesday has few words and no human protagonist, relying instead on a surreal and supernatural vision. The book, for children ages 5 years old and up, won the 1992 Caldecott Medal.

From Publishers Weekly
Leapin' lizards?er, frogs! The many fans of Wiesner's 1992 Caldecott Medal-winning Tuesday will be hoppy to learn that one of its acrobatic amphibian actors has landed in his very own book-and-toy package. The personable critter rests (courtesy of Velcro) on fabric lily pad, accompanied by a paperback edition of the book (Clarion, $22, ages 5-up ISBN 0-395-73511-4 May).

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 4-- As the full moon rises over a peaceful marsh, so do frogs on their lily pads--levitating straight up into the air and sailing off, with surpris with some laundry, hovering briefly before a TV left on. A dog chases one lone low-coasting frog, but is summarily routed by a concerted amphibious armada. Suddenly the rays of the rising sun dispel the magic; the frogs fall to ed but gratified expressions. Fish stick their heads out of the water to watch; a turtle gapes goggle-eyed. The phalanx of froggies glides over houses in a sleeping village, interrupting the one witness's midnight snack, tanglingthe ground and hop back to their marsh, leaving police puzzling over the lily pads on Main Street. In the final pages, the sun sets on the following Tuesday--and the air fills with ascending pigs! Dominated by rich blues and greens, and fully exploiting its varied perspectives, this book treats its readers to the pleasures of airborne adventure. It may not be immortal, but kids will love its lighthearted, meticulously imagined, fun-without-a-moral fantasy. Tuesday is bound to take off. --Patricia Dooley, University of Washington, Seattle

Monday you can fall apart. Tuesday, Wednesday break my heart
By E. R. Bird
We've all heard the stories of the skies, for whatever reason, raining frogs on innocent town travelers. This natural occurrence of the wild is one of the great weirdnesses of life. So how much odder is it, really, to consider frogs flying? They have all the self-possession required of such a task. Frogs are a uniquely calm species. Confident even. In Dave Wiesner's essentially wordless book "Tuesday", amphibian folk are given the unexplained power of floatation. In his tale, Wiesner considers what exactly frogs would do with the gift of flying if it was granted them.
One of the best pictures in this book is on one of the first pages. There, a turtle cowers into its shell as black eyed pupil-less frogs rise on their lily pads out of the water. The frogs descend, so to speak, on a nearby suburb, and proceed to wreak some minor havok. They disturb a man pausing to eat a late night sandwich. They disturb laundry and enter old ladies' homes to watch a little telly. And they take a great amount of pleasure in scaring a dog that would undoubtedly eat them if it had the chance. As the book ends, the frogs are relieved of their otherworldly powers and hop back to the swamps, leaving only their lily pads behind them. The next Tuesday, at the same time, we're given a hint of how a more porcine animal will handle flight.
Wiesner is a genius at the visual gag. His illustrations are simple watercolors, well-detailed and in-depth. Wiesner knows when to give an animal human expressions and when to leave it looking particularly froggy. He gets every single one of those frogs' spots down , and can manipulate his illustrations in such a way that you never doubt for a moment the ridiculous things you're seeing. To top it all off, the man's a master at conveying light. I'm particularly attached to a scene of flying frogs watching t.v., a wary cat crouching in the background. The old lady asleep in the chair is wearing glasses that are reflecting the light of the television perfectly. On top of that, this is exactly what a room lit only by a single screen looks like. Wiesner's details are marvelous. Make sure to notice the frog appreciatively eyeing the old lady's painting of the forest.
There aren't that many wordless picture books out there these days though Wiesner has made a name for himself by specializing in this area. After reading "Tuesday", you can understand why he deserves this honor. Both witty and perverse, this author/illustrator lets you see into worlds you never could have imagined existed before he came up with them. You'll be thankful that he did.

to be read EVERY Tuesday
By Jay
In the inside of the cover, Wiesner claims these events actually happened one Tuesday and... "all those in doubt are reminded that there is always another Tuesday." Beginning at 8:00pm, we see a three-part picture of a pond that changes perspective to focus on an alarmed turtle. Frogs on lilypads have taken flight and begin to chase after birds, intimidate a dog and confuse a man eating midnight snack. As morning approaches, the frogs return to their pond, leaving their lilypads and the curious detectives behind. The story ends with the words, "next Tuesday" and the shadow of a flying pig.
I've used this book in primary classrooms. It is a very cute story with only a few words. It also provides a wonderful opportunity for children to tell or write their own words. This enables students who cannot read yet to engage in a literate activity.
Why 5 stars?:
This book tells a cute fantasy story with very few words. It lends itself to having children make up their own text, which will support their emerging literacy skills. The illustrations are incredibly lifelike and it is no wonder it won a Caldecott.

An imaginative award-winning journey
By Reginald D. Garrard
I discovered this classic over a decade ago when working on my Master's. One of my required classes was a course in children's literature and it turned out to be my favorite. Having long been an avid reader, I was reintroduced to forgotten pleasures and presented with new (at that time) works that were totally fascinating.
"Tuesday" is in the latter category. It is short on prose but makes up for it with engrossing illustrations. The minimum of words allows the "reader" to create a different script with each visit.
My three-year-old niece "eats" the book up every time that either her mom, her grandfather, or even her dotting uncle takes a shine to pull it off the shelf and share it with her. Our respective interpretations of the pictures are limitless, making this a book that will live long after others have faded into obscurity.
Even the book's end allows the child to ponder the events of "Wednesday" and even hypothesize about the events of subsequent days.
Any book that plays on a child's natural tendency to dream is a winner.

Review
"I have assigned several Major Problems over the years and was particularly impressed with this volume. At times I feel that it keeps the "survey" focus when there is time now to delve deeper into issues. Also, even though this is a US history text - I believe that it is important to provide some global/world context for the Depression and World Wars. Students cannot understand the US perspective without situating it in a global context."

"This is an excellent collection of documents and secondary readings addressing, in a thoughtful and thorough manner, one of the most tumultuous periods in US history."

Used as textbook in American History college class
By Annie M daffodils
We ordered this as a required textbook for a college course. It is a little "dry" in some areas, but has a good balance. To me it is more geared to the student than the average person, but then a history afficianado would probably like it also.
