Killer Woman Blues: Why Americans Can't Think Straight About Gender and Power, by Benjamin DeMott

The new "killer woman," says Benjamin DeMott in this lively and provocative book, believes that empowerment lies in tough, aggressive, "male" behavior. This gender denial, he contends, is reshaping American society and betraying the original vision of feminism, which embodied the ideal of a more compassionate and nurturing society for both women and men. Today, many women believe they must "become men" to succeed -- and men are perceived as often ruthless and brutally competitive. Differences molded by nature and history are obscured, as is the healthy flexibility that would free both sexes from rigid gender positions. The other side of this coin is an increasingly hard-nosed ethos in corporate America and in our public policy.
We can no longer think straight about gender and power, DeMott argues, because we are inundated daily by a flood of cultural material -- popular and literary fiction, movies, sitcoms, commercials, cartoons, the whole media mix -- embodying the killer woman and her values. It leads us to believe that the sexes have nothing to teach each other except ever harsher modes of selfishness and cruelty, both at work and at home. DeMott makes his case persuasively with a wealth of fascinating and highly entertaining material. Present, among others, are Nicole Kidman, Walt Whitman, Courtney Love, Teddy Roosevelt, and Rudy Giuliani, along with The New Yorker, Salon, Ally McBeal, Sex and the City, and much more.
Concluding with a passionate plea for a return to feminism's large-spirited vision of human variousness, KILLER WOMAN BLUES clarifies several of our nation's most troubling social problems and will surely be heatedly discussed.

Amazon.com Review
"She's a cutthroat killer," Martha Stewart gushes about the head of an investment firm. A Cosmopolitan cover story exclaims, "Infidelity--It's Not Just for Men Anymore." "Go Ahead, Be a Bitch," counsels Woman's Own. Rick tells Oprah how his wife "liked to slap [his] face a lot." Demi Moore plays a hard-driving, ruthless executive who is also a sexual harasser. Taken individually, these homages to violent or exploitative behavior by women might not be worth getting riled about. But with the blight of images of aggressive women in every genre of entertainment (the list of films about women killers alone fills two pages), cultural critic Benjamin DeMott smells something akin to a cultural conspiracy going on, one that silences feminist calls for reimagining relations between the sexes without stereotypes (what he calls "gender flexibility") and transmogrifies feminism into a dumbed-down campaign to turn women into men ("gender shift"). DeMott sees this phenomenon everywhere, from riot grrrls to bruiser chic guy-talk, from sitcom humor in King of the Hill and The Single Guy to the writings of cultural critics such as Camille Paglia and Katie Roiphe. In each case, they reduce equal justice to "free expression of violent hatred of the other sex" and equal sexual candor to "equal right to objectify and humiliate."

None of this is the stuff of true feminism, DeMott reminds readers as he turns to the works of such feminist writers as Catharine MacKinnon and Carol Gilligan. Rather, feminism is liberationist politics and the goal is humane interactions. DeMott's biggest concern is that the raiding and pillaging of gender identity is undermining women's moral authority and weakening the country's sense of social justice. Through stories about people such as Sandra Quintana, a high school gang member in New York City who was transformed with the help of concerned teachers and school programs, DeMott links the "violent woman" with the rise of the politics of pitilessness and acceptance of corporate greed. While it's easy to be skeptical of his claims on the surface, just as it is to laugh at gender shift jokes, his lengthy list of examples and critiques of contemporary writings are compelling. This is an eye-opening addition to the literature on feminism and a trenchant indictment of where the sexes have landed at the turn of the millennium. --Lesley Reed

From Publishers Weekly
Soccer player Brandi Chastain and Disney's warrior girl Mulan are just two of the female idols taken to task by DeMott (The Trouble with Friendship), who argues that American culture valorizes "women-becoming-men" (by which he means women becoming violent, crude, greedy and aggressive). This awkward locution is shorthand for what DeMott identifies as our tendency to measure women's progress in traditionally male terms. The bottom line, according to DeMott, is "wasting the intellectual and social promise of feminismDlosing touch with the liberationist ideal of gender flexibility... could, in truth, disastrously blight our country's psychomoral future." Most of the examples he cites are from pop culture and the media: examples of "kickbutting women" like the TV characters Buffy and Xena, Demi Moore in GI Jane and Heather Graham, who has said, "As an actress, it's fun to do rageful things." DeMott even fingers the milk industry for suggesting that mustaches aren't just for men. Though DeMott insists he's seeking a return to what he sees as the core values of second wave feminism, his book reads like a 1950s throwback: "When women's highest ambitions are seen as identical with corporate ambitions, a human past beyond price or valuing is buried" sounds suspiciously like "A woman's place is in the home." The assertiveness that DeMott derides as "gender confusion" might just be women finally getting their say. Nevertheless, his prominence as a writer for the New York Review of Books and Harper's, plus his deliberately contentious writing style, ensures a lively reaction to his analysis.

Very Thought Provoking
By James Picardo
Don't be put off by the reviews of some of the female readers on her. This book has an important, long over do message about both men and women. It is definitely worth the read.
Anyone whose worked in corporate America knows of the kind of woman that Demott is describing. But one need not be in the office to see her. Today the "Killer Woman" is found with celebratory fame on numerous shows and in the media. From termagents for wives to Lorenna Bobbit, the so-called no-nonsense woman that is not concerned for liberty and completely lacking in moral fortitude, is virtually championed. Today many buisnesses have taken note of this species of woman, who is referred to as a "bully broad." They are most commonly found in human resources, but where ever they are they share that same immaturity of mind, the kind reminescent of the proud little girl in the school yard whose expection that the entire world must yield to her demanded she retaliate on the world when it didn't.
Demott brilliantly shows the hypocricy of many women who claim they are for feminism, liberalism, and equality yet demonstrate by their actions they are far from having any such concern. Ask any man under 40 and he will laugh at the old hackneyed statement that women are more nurturing and are better at communicative skills (just look at the tripe that, say, writers like Natalie Angier or Helen Fisher are preposterously peddling these days).
A few years back the essayist Barbara Ehrenreich wrote in Time magazine that Lorenna was a victim and had a right to do what she did. Ehrenreich continued on to offer her suggestion of how she would have sexually mutilated a man. It is this culture that Demott is addressing. Later it was found that Lorena Bobbit had a long history of physically abusing people, including her mother who she beat with a baseball bat. Moreover, it is a culture that is tolerated where women are allowed to do damaging things in the name of equality, even on youth. Two years ago, as an example, Oprah sponsored and televised a show about the Brotherhood/Sisterhood Club of Los Angeles, a summer camp for teenage kids. In what Oprah termed a "life changing experiment," the boys were subjected to nearly three hours of sexual humiliation and emotional abuse by the girls for, as one girls innanely rationalized, "to teach boys a lesson" about what "girls go through everyday." Several lawsuits were filed and several of the female psychologists who orchestrated the "program" came under investigation. But more darker still is the impact on male youth who witnessed this, a subject that Demott also addresses. Several of the female "participants" were later the targets of sexual retribution by other males, and no doubt these young males reasons with a like-minded rational: to return the favor of the "lesson" they had learned. Not surpisingly the "program" had the opposite effect: it made otherwise kind men into angry offenders.
I find this aspect the most interesting for Demott is taking on how damaging today's culture is to society. Seeing the moral collapsing in women gives men a cause to not follow the rules, and this correlates well with the undeniably decline in chivalry over the decades. Many men are tired of listening to the real double standards of so many women wanting to have policies in their favor and at the same time not take responsibility for actions that if a man had done would be dealt with severely.
Demott's book is right on target.

An Essential Book
By A Customer
This is the third book I have read in DeMott's trilogy on class, race, and gender. As in _The Imperial Middle_ and _The Trouble with Friendship_, the author once again takes on an issue about which it would seem there is nothing new to be said. By the end of the argument, DeMott has cast fresh light on contemporary American life and highlighted previously unrecognized connections between popular and elite culture, between the multiplex and the boardroom.
DeMott takes as his subject images of and debates about gender and sex in the last half decade of American life. From sitcom America to feminist academia, DeMott guides us across a wide and varied field of modern American voices. Along the way, we are shown that all around us feminism's original promise---as voiced by writers from Wollstonecraft to Gilligan---is today too often neglected. Contemporary America has replaced an aspiration for egailitarian gender relations with a deformed ethos of tough women and, what DeMott calls, "gender shift." What is lost, DeMott reminds us, is feminism's liberating promise.
DeMott writes with a fierce commitment to shared democratic values and reconnects the gender wars to larger questions of politics and power. One concludes this essential book with a fuller appreciation of how the coarsening of modern democratic life has been in large part accomplished in the cultural realm, by shrill voices unalert to human sympathy and by those with an inability to imagine a fuller world of gender possibility.

DeMott can't think straight
By Debbie Lee Wesselmann
I bought this book with the hope that Benjamin DeMott would provide an insightful, thought-provoking look at gender politics - and instead found myself disappointed before I had finished the introduction. DeMott seems to have created a theory which he wants desperately to prove: that women have shed their femininity to become men largely because the media - arts, journalism, commercials, etc. - has innundated our culture with images of the "killer woman", an aggressive, asexual figure. DeMott's supporting facts are weak and often a real stretch, so that when he occasionally gets things right, it seems an exception rather than the rule. His generalizations go too far, and his understanding of contemporary women not far enough. It struck me that the author was trying to fit the facts to a theory and not the other way around. Much of this seems (whether fairly or not) to reflect the author's sense of being threatened by strong women. Who else would find a female journalist's tough questions as a shedding of her womanhood? Does he truly expect Diane Sawyer to ask Al Gore about the draperies hanging in his house instead of calling him to task for his exaggerations? The only interesting aspect of this book is the variety of sources upon which he draws, from television shows to Joyce Carol Oates to Susan Faludi.
I really hate to pan a book, but this one truly disappointed me. I found it a waste of my time and intellect.

I will not use this text again
By A Customer
I find this edition impossible for classroom use and, after this semester, I will not use it again. I wish the venerable Hughes edition was available and affordable: somebody should reissue it if it is going out of print, as it remains the better textbook.
Here are my complaints:
*The prose is riddled with what seem to me to be small typos--I'm not talking about orginal spelling, but about things like "buy" for "but" (p. 937) and so on. There is one of these every 2-3 pages on average, and this is just too many.
*Some of the notes seem designed not to assist undergraduate readers but to demonstrate the editor's grasp of secondary scholarship. Why else would a note to _Comus_ direct readers to Leah Marcus and NOT also offer succinct remarks about the controversy surrounding Sports and mirth? What good is a note like that to the average undergraduate reader?
*The notes are so frequently about minor textual issues--the kind of thing that can go in an appendix and that undergrads are unlikely to care about--that students after a while stop looking at them altogether. That does not help anybody.
*The notes--especially to the prose--do not supply anything like the kind of necessary information that any classroom text should provide. This text does not identify the scriptural passages Milton cites, etc. For example, when Milton refers to a "covnant" in Tenure of Kings and Magistrates and/or The Readie and Easie Way, students need a note about The Solemn League and Covenant, but there is no such thing.

Looking forward to second printing
By Patrick Harrison
This up-to-date edition of Milton's complete poetry and major prose fills the urgent need for a successor to the venerable student's edition Merritt Hughes prepared half a century ago (now, alas, out of print).
One outstanding virtue of the Riverside Milton is its editor, Roy Flannagan. Flannagan is remarkably responsive to readers' comments, which he promises to take into account in the preparation of future editions (the first of which is said to be in press as of this writing). Unfortunately, a revised edition of the book is instantly needed. In its first printing, the Riverside Milton is badly marred by the absence of a table of contents to the poems and of indices to titles and first lines. Without these helps, it is impossible to find the shorter pieces without a considerable amount of page-turning--and difficult to justify giving the book more than three stars.
Some will be delighted to find that Flannagan has mixed textual notes with substantive ones at the bottom of the page; others (including, I suspect, most undergraduates) will find the mixture irritating, and will resent all the extra head-bobbing between text and annotations. Unexceptionable, I believe, is Flannagan's decision to preserve Milton's 17th-century spelling and punctuation, which greatly facilitates scanning the lines and reading them aloud.
As for the substance of the substantive notes, I believe it generally to be sound, though a handful of glosses seem far fetched and little worth. For example, in commenting upon how "Smiles . . . love to live in dimple sleek" ("L'Allegro," lines 28-30), Flannagan tells us that "Smiles do live in dimples, and dimples live in smooth (youthful) or sleek and plump faces. Also, a personified Smile lives in a dimple the way that a fairy in Midsummer Night's Dream may live in a flower."
As it now stands, the Riverside Milton is a work more of promise than of perfection. Those interested in purchasing the text should wait until the second printing is available, since it will contain the table of contents needed for the book to be truly usable.

Advantages, Disadvantages
By Ben Hodges
I've read about 1000 pages of this text and feel qualified to judge it dispassionately.

Here's the deal with it. It has great advantages which other Milton anthologies do not (excellent textual scholarship--and most importantly, the original spelling). But it has deep flaws that irk and pain every student who has to use this book.

* One: as one student said, it feels and read like a science book (bad design, in other words: it has no aesthetic appeal).

* Two: the typescript and layout are just counterintuitive: the footnotes are so hard to read sometimes as they are usually crammed in on each page--the whole book looks crammed and makes the reader feel crammed.

* Three: but the kicker--the downright absurd footnotes.

Let me explain: _Comus_, for example, has over 1000 footnotes. Flannagan has never heard of making textual notes _end_notes and keeping interpretative, allusional, or historical notes as footnotes. The result? The reader getting stopped twice on every line not knowing whether to keep reading or whether to spend five minutes each time reading all the damn notes! But what really stinks is that you have no idea whether the note will tell you something really important, say about the English Civil War, differing traits Bacchus' "madness," the genealogy of some lot of gods, or a crucial Bible passage--or whether it will just be one of the absolutely endless and useless textual notes.

Want a good example? By far my favorite--in _Comus_, there is a footnote on the word "where." The footnote informs the reader that Milton originally spelt the word "were" in the manuscript, tried to insert the "h" in, but then decided that he might as well rewrite the word, so he crossed it out, and spelt it correctly.

Are you kidding me?! And these inundate the whole book.

Supposedly a new "original spelling" edition of Milton is coming out next Spring, so I'd wait for that one. If you must have this for some reason, use a library copy. You won't want to keep it.

Amazon.com Review
The Peterson Field Guides series has added another weapon to its considerable arsenal of bird-identification guidebooks: a field guide devoted solely to the warblers of North America. Warblers, those small, sprightly, colorful songbirds that move north through the continent for the breeding season, have always delighted and simultaneously frustrated birders around the country. This field guide won't cure any cases of "warbler neck"--a condition brought on by extensive peering into the treetops--but it will help you to better decide just which species has your craned-neck attention. With color plates (including the "Peterson System" of arrows indicating important field marks), photographs, distribution maps, and textual information on species description, habitat, behavior, song, plumage variations, and migration patterns, this is an essential resource for birders.

Second to None!
By David A. Brinkman
Several years ago, while watching the bird feeders at Muskatatuck National Wildlife Refuge in Seymour, Indiana, I heard a voice behind me pointing out that there were two races of White-crowned Sparrow at the feeder. He went into detail about the subtle differences between the two. At first I thought to myself, who is this guy? Later, I realized that it was Jon Dunn! I have had a high respect for him ever since.
Years later, he was the guest speaker at our bird club meeting. He presented some of the plates from his, at the time, upcoming new field guide to warblers. I fell in love with the plates from the very start. Thomas R. Shultz and Cindy House did a remarkable job, and the detail that was carefully gathered from museum specimens is second to none. I knew from the beginning that I had to have this new field guide and I couldn't wait until it appeared on the shelves.
When I bought my copy of the finished product, it was even more than I expected. Aside from the detailed plates making fall and female warbler identification easier, the text is filled with information on virtually every aspect of life history of each species, with cross-references that will aid any serious researcher. More than just a field guide for identification purposes, this book belongs on the shelf of beginners and experts alike who share a passion for warblers.

Combines the best elements of field and academic bird books.
By A Customer
The latest addition to the revered Peterson field guide series, A Field Guide to Warblers of North America by Jon L Dunn and Kimball L Garrett is a benchmark in American birding literature. At 660 pages, heavy enough to make your hand cramp up while holding it, this work might be described as a hybrid: too thick and wordy to be a field guide, too clearly written to be an ornithological manual. "Warblers" has combined the best elements of field and academic books; thirty-two excellent plates by Thomas R Schultz and Cindy House which are supplemented with photos, and detailed information on plumages, provide years worth of learning opportunities even for the advanced birder. Discussions of subspecific variations, molt sequences, taxonomic relationships and population and conservation status, along with references for further reading, allow birders to go beyond field identification to an expansive understanding of North America's wood warblers. Even for those warbler-depauperate corners of the country, such as the Pacific Northwest, where eight species of warblers is a good day's haul, this is a worthy investment. Warblers is written by and for information junkies. When you want to check range maps that are larger in scale and more accurate than any seen in field guides of the past, or illustrations and text of Townsend's/Hermit hybrids you'll go for this book. When you want to "really" know something about Yellow Warblers you'll set aside an hour and a half to digest this book's twenty-two pages describing it's plumages, habitats, vocalizations, etc. The range of the plates is no less mind-boggling than the text. The plate illustrating the Orange-crowned Warbler has ten full-body illustrations and two head-only illustrations: adult males of four races, four first-fall male and female variations, and two juveniles of different races. Yellow-rumped Warblers are given their own plate with twelve full illustrations and five partials to show gender, age and race differences. I've always thought that some of the best information in bird books is in the preface, introduction and appendixes. Many people skip over these portions when appraising a work but a thorough read of the introduction gives one the framework in which to understand much of what follows. The appendixes and various "add-ons" at the end of the book suggest ways in which you can further explore the subject if you're interested. The introduction to Warblers discusses characteristics of the warbler genera, speciation and hybridization, geographical variation, plumages and molts, habitats, foraging habits, vocalizations, breeding biology, migration and conservation issues. The appendixes contain a glossary with a separate section for geographical terms, useful for a book which goes into such detail regarding distribution and a twenty-seven page list of references. Warblers is one of those books that threatens to make a couch birder out of you. Don't be too tempted though; buy this book and study it well, but use that information in the real world outside your four walls, and bring what you see with your own eyes together with the knowledge you've gleaned from Warblers. Your understanding and appreciation of this diverse and fascinating family will be richer for it.

A treasure chest of information, but highly specialized
By A Customer
I have been a bird-watcher (not a "birder," a term I find too trendy) since 1961, and have loved warblers perhaps more than any other group of avian friends. Spring each year means for me the delight of finding warblers--most of which are only transient visitors to the area where I have lived most of my life (the Middle Atlantic region). Thus, when I learned about this new Peterson's guide in Bird Watcher's Digest recently, I jumped at the chance to acquire it and improve my knowledge base. I had previously found the Peterson guides on "Hawks" and "Advanced Birding" especially helpful, and had used an old edition of Roger Tory Peterson's "Field Guide to the Birds" when I first learned about birds in the field. This field guide is quite unlike anything else in the Peterson series in appearance and content. It offers a great deal of specialized information, including very useful range maps (quite detailed), illustrations of each warbler species in a variety of plumages (not by RTP, but his successors are quite worthy), great photos interspersed in the text, and a vast amount of detail about habits, songs, range, current ecological status, and more than most people would ever want to know about subspecies. So the book does add a great deal to the knowledge base of even an experienced old timer like me.

What I miss in this volume, however, is the spirit of (for want of a better word) "fun" or enjoyment of the subject. This volume lacks the poetry of A.C. Bent, Frank Chapman, or Hal Harrison, in their excellent books on warblers. All in all, though, few bird-watchers these days seem to be as interested in enjoyment of individual birds as they used to--perhaps a price paid for the increasing popularization of ornithology as a hobby--and even for some, a sport.

This seems a volume written by and intended for people who are ornithologists in the scientific sense of the word. It would be extremely useful for bird-banders, who need to "age" and "sex" a bird in the field, for example. The rest of us can get something out of the new field guide, but I doubt that I would carry it along on a bird walk--the data are more than I need when I am in the field. It will continue to fascinate me as I leaf through it, however. And for anyone who enjoys warblers, this is a "must" to own.

Excellent Field Guide to help identify Wildflowers
By A Customer
I take this guide (and the Audobon Society Field Guide to North American Wildflowers-- west) on all my field trips to identify wildflowers. Though Peterson has fewer real photos, it does have better aids to identify specific wildflowers, as it is organized by color, as well as number and types of petals. The sketches help me do a preliminary id on the wildflower.

A Field Guide to Western Wildflowers
By Rosemary T. Flynn
Personally, I think the Peterson Guides are far more helpful than the Audobon publications. As mentioned in other reviews, Peterson uses illustrations organized by color and flower configuration. The illustrations are very well done. Audobon uses photos. The idea is that you match your specimen to the photo it most closely matches and follow further identification from there. The books are complimetary and work well together; however, if you can only choose one-- get the Peterson book. Overall, I have had much better success keying out plants with Peterson and repeatedly have found the plant I am looking for overlooked in the Audobon text. The truth be known, I doubt I will ever buy a Audobon plant book again-- perhaps they are better with birds.

Takes a little work but it is very very good...
By Michael W. Gaskins
If you are not familiar with dichotomous keys (perhaps in a college science class) this might seem a little confusing... but start your flower search with the keys before you go to the drawings/plates. You will find your subject more quickly than trying to match pictures. I think this the flaw in the Audubon Series. Plus you get an education of sorts.
I just bought a new old copy of the book because my original 1976 copy was falling apart. I did this with great reluctance because over the years, I had created color plates with my colored pencils truly making the book even more useful. I spent many great days in the field finding and identifying wildflowers and then coloring my plates. Now... do I start over... or try to transfer the color plates to the new book? I got the vintage leather covered copy and it is magnificent. Think the vocabulary tough... get a copy of Phillip Munz, A California Flora and just start reading on any page...

Sony: The Private Life, by John Nathan

From its inauspicious beginnings amid Tokyo's bomb-scarred ruins to its role as the world's chief purveyor of electronics and mass culture, Sony's story is one of the signal fables of our age. In SONY: THE PRIVATE LIFE, John Nathan, a preeminent expert on Japanese culture, dissects this fable, pulling the veil from one of the world's most successful and secretive corporations. He uncovers persuasive evidence that Sony's biggest triumphs, from color TV to CDs, and most calamitous failures, like the Betamax debacle and the vexed takeover of Columbia Pictures, stem from the web of intense relationships that have always characterized its top ranks. Nathan traces this emotional web as no other writer has or could, by drawing on his unmatched expertise in Japanese culture and his unique, unlimited access to Sony's inner sanctum. With a novelist's skill - honed by translating the works of Yukio Mishima and Kenzaburo Oe - Nathan etches incisive portraits of the company's famously enigmatic cofounder, Akio Morita; its patrician, autocratic CEO, Norio Ohga; and its edgy new leader, Nobuyuki Idei, who already has brought wrenching changes to Sony. Nathan's exploration of the Sony empire also reveals how it invented color TV as we know it and used bold marketing techniques to best the inferior yet dominant American competition; why Sony ignored the conventional wisdom of the time to enter a groundbreaking partnership with archrival Philips to perfect the CD; how Sony manages to prosper despite Japan's economic malaise; and what innovations and strategies it plans for the new century. With authority and wit, Nathan dispels the myths that surround Sony and crafts unparalleled corporate drama. Sony: The Private Life is at once an engrossing chronicle of astounding entrepreneurship and a poignant account of loyalty's consequences.

Sony's cofounders, Masaru Ibuka and Akio Morita, met near the end of World War II. Ibuka was an engineer with a childlike love for gadgetry and technology; Morita, a pragmatic physicist who arranged to be away from his military unit on the day Japan surrendered, fearful that all officers would be ordered to commit ritual suicide. (He guessed correctly.) Together they founded Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering Co., Ltd., the forerunner of Sony, in 1946, using loans from Morita's wealthy family for startup capital. But even that wasn't as simple as it seems. First, Morita had to be released from his obligation, as first-born son, to take over the family sake business. The very Japaneseness of that moment goes a long way toward illustrating the exotic charm of Sony: The Private Life.

John Nathan is a professor of Japanese culture at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and speaks and understands the nuanced Japanese like a native. He was given extraordinary access to Sony employees, and found some of them telling him company secrets that had never been revealed to outsiders. (In international business, the electronics giant has traditionally been regarded as a black hole; information goes in, but it never comes out.) From these intimate revelations, he tells a story of a company that to Western observers always seemed like a bottom-line-oriented conglomerate. The reality, he writes, is that Sony has always operated via intense personal relationships and loyalties--in that sense, in a very Japanese way. Even the company's disastrous decision to buy Columbia Pictures came from top Sony executives' desire to honor Morita, who'd always wanted to own a movie studio. Although that decision ultimately cost Sony billions of dollars, it pleased the man who mattered. --Lou Schuler

From Publishers Weekly
Readers should be thankful that the most thorough history of Sony yet written comes from a writer steeped in Japanese culture rather than in business. Nathan, a professor of Japanese cultural studies at UC-Santa Barbara, gives a human dimension to the Japanese electronics giant, especially to its cofounders, Masaru Ibuka (the dreamer) and Akio Morita (the pragmatist), who, according to Ibuka's son, were linked by a bond of friendship and collegiality that made them "closer than lovers." Nathan had the full cooperation of Sony, including access to top officials and archives. Yet this is no puff-piece, but rather a fascinating account of how Sony succeeded despite such setbacks as the failure of Betamax and the disastrous $4.7 billion purchase of Columbia Pictures. At the center of the story are Ibuka and Morita, who strove to make Sony accepted and respected beyond Japan, especially in the U.S. Some of the most absorbingAand even poignantAsections concern the cultural divide between Japan and America. Nathan focuses on the interpersonal relationships among the company's leaders to examine what made the company tick. In addition to the interplay between Ibuka and Morita, Nathan documents the rise of Norio Ohga as the successor to the cofounders and also devotes a considerable amount of time to the relationship between Ohga and Mickey Schulhof, the highest-ranking American Sony officer before he was fired by the current Sony president Nobuyuki Idei. By mixing interviews with Sony executives with his own insights, Nathan provides readers with a thorough and entertaining history of the company that rose out of the ashes of WWII to embody Japan's postwar resurrection. From Library Journal
Nathan, a professor of Japanese cultural studies at the University of California at Santa Barbara and an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, received open access from the Sony Corporation for this history. He traces the company from its beginnings at the end of World War II to the present, providing an intimate, meticulously detailed account of how upper management made its decisions. Profiles of major players like founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka, members of the inner circle such as Mickey Schulof and Harvey Schein, and present chairman Norio Ohga and president Nobuyuki Idei give the reader an understanding of the motivations behind Sony Corporation's successful innovations, like the Walkman and compact-disc technology, and failures, like the Betamax and the purchase of Columbia Pictures. Nathan also provides ample insight into how the Japanese do business. A good choice for large public and academic libraries.

What a wonderful read!
By J. Fong
Mr. Nathan opens the doors into a world foreign to most people, the apex of the corporate world and all its workings. Not only are we privy to the Japanese business world and culture, but we also glimpse the doings of US companies. It is amazing to me, that Mr. Morita and Mr. Ibuta were able to penetrate the US marketplace given the obstacles they faced. Crossing cultural lines, attitudes, and language must have been difficult; but to succeed so magnificently, especially after our shared history in World War II is mind-boggling. I offer no hesitation in recommending this book.

A good book if you are interested in European Imperialism
By Mellow C
As much of the books in the Problems in European Civilization Series, this book is great for people who have gone through history classes wishing to understand a period, aspect or event in history better.

This book deals with many of the major theories on the cause of european imperialism and why it is that it ultimately failed (there are even writings from Lenin and Ghandi in this book on the subject of imperialism). One of the most interesting things I learned about European imperialism is that the europeans taught their colonial subjects about their own struggles for independence, rights and representative government, inadvertantly planting and watering the seeds of colonial independence. They even have a section where a native of the dutch colony of indonesia (who was interested in Indonesian independence) wrote to and lectured the Dutch colonial authorities about this very thing.

Seeing Lenin's view of imperialism was interesting, although it was easy to see how misguided the man was thinking there would be a transition from european imperialism to world-wide communism. It was also interesting to read Ghandi's view on imperialism (he thought european imperialism was successful in great measure because the people of Indian wanted the wealth, goods and technology the British had to offer and would be independent as soon as India as a nation wanted independence... and then there were Ghandi's own luddite views on technology and independence.

All and all this book is work buying and going over repeatedly.
