PreSchool-K-- In this rhyming counting book, an African-American mother and her children shop for and prepare a festive family dinner. At the supermarket, the count begins with one grocery cart and ends with ten hands helping to load the car. Back at home, the father joins in the preparations and the numbers build a second time to "ten hungry folks" seated around a table ready to share a tasty meal of fried chicken and greens. The successful rhyme scheme builds a natural rhythm that helps the simple text read smoothly. Collage illustrations combine colored paper, patterned fabrics, and felt in a clear, uncluttered design. Muted colors and simple shapes are set off by a stark white background. Most of the figures, especially the baby girl with her rounded limbs and bouncing braids, are animated and expressive. At times, however, facial features seem slightly stilted and relentlessly cheerful. Still, this is an appealing glance at a typical extended family. --Joy Fleishhacker, New York Public Library

The creator of Clowning Around (1991) brings her strong sense of design to a counting book in which numbers are skillfully dovetailed into a simple depiction of an African- American family going marketing and then, in a second count from one to ten, preparing and serving a meal. With Mother, four children scouting for groceries, ``five kinds of beans'' (including jelly beans), ``six bunches of greens,'' and ``ten hands to help''--including Mother's but not baby's--a nice bit reasoning is needed to work out the counts, and it all works out logically. Falwell uses crisp, bright, beautifully designed collages of fabric and paper silhouetted on white for her warm portrayal of this lively, well-organized family, quietly incorporating contemporary touches (a recycling bin; males helping out in the kitchen). Depicts Black people without being about racism

We make sure at least 50% of the books we check out or buy depict non-White folks, as we are an adoptive family and I have a Black son along with three homegrown kiddos. I have noticed, most of those books we've found about African Americans, the ones not from Africa, are about racism, which I think is *vital* to talk about with kids, and we do, but I don't want every. single. book with Black people in it to be about racism. It gets heavy for the toddler and preschool set sometimes. This book is perfect!!!!! Illustrations are darling, we love it. It's so nice to see a black family in a book where it's *not* all about being black

Or about living in Africa, or living in the past, or some sort of troubles (modern or historical). It's so nice to just see a family doing what families *do*. (They even recycle!)
My nieces ask me to read this book to them often. It's a very fast book, suitable both for very young children and for slightly older ones. We love looking at various details - like the fact that "five kinds of beans" includes JELLY beans, or the fact that the baby sits on a lap at dinner. It's just a quick, sweet book.

A book packed with curriculum ideas!

This book has been around for a long time, but it continues to be a favorite in my classroom. It's one of those simple books that sparks so many different curriculum paths! Counting, number groupings, nutrition, cooperation, family activities, word choices, story writing, and more. It has also initiated collage art projects, quilt making, and paper mache vegetables! FEAST FOR 10 is a goldmine. I see that it's coming out in a board book soon, too. We have both the hardcover and several paperbacks in my class.
