PreSchool-Grade 1-A noted poet takes young readers along on a city dog's first trip to the country. The animal barely knows what to do with her freedom-she walks, she barks, she runs with abandon. She looks for familiar places-the sidewalk corners "where city dogs mingle and meet," but there are no boundaries for her here-"nothing but countryside rolling around." Kuskin's watercolor-and-ink drawings are childlike and simple. The soft pastel colors, with deeper shadings, add visual impact to the lines. Short portions of the lilting text are set in or beneath each of the illustrations, and are easily visible through the use of large type. Wide white space frames each picture; the sweeping double pages capture the countryside's vastness. The poem's uninterrupted text appears on the final page. Replete with the imagery one has come to expect from Kuskin, this story in verse is a treat.

Ages 4-7. The phrase "It's a dog's life" gets a reverse meaning in this happy romp. A more contented pooch never graced the pages of a picture book than this pup, who enthusiastically drags her tangled leash and poky owners to the car as they set out on a trip to the seashore. Unleashed, city dog revels in its freedom, only vaguely curious about the absence of buildings. Every new sight is amazing: "Soft grass, warm ground, rabbit holes to paw and nose, fast bikes, bare toes. Blue waves, crabs, crows." The reader is visually drawn into the action by the strong horizontal line of the strained red leash, which stretches across the preliminary pages. Once the city is left behind and the leash is unfastened, cool green hills and blue sea and sky provide both soothing backdrop and comical contrast to the dog's energetic antics. In two particularly effective scenes, city dog is, in true doggy fashion, literally everywhere at once. The mixed-meter, rhymed verse is a joy to read aloud and strong enough to stand on its own without illustration. The complete running text of the poem is appended. Elizabeth Bush

They unexpectedly meet wild boar; feed fish while snorkeling; befriend a wild cat; enjoy the geckos that live on the walls of their home; and save frogs from certain death. Told in a leisurely pace in simple, gently cadenced language, these personal reminiscences display a lively sense of humor and a deep appreciation and respect for nature. Though Kerley tells excellent, almost intimate, stories, the slow pace may limit the book's appeal. Young readers could easily handle the text and will find the format attractive. Wide margins, heavy cream paper, and handsome black-and-white woodblock prints-one per chapter-make the book a joy to hold. While children may not choose this title on their own, teachers will find it a solid addition to units on family history or storytelling.

About the Author
Barbara Kelly Kerley is a contributor to Houghton Mifflin's "Song of Papa's Island."

Katherine was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota and grew up near lakes and surrounded by trees. Now she lives in San Francisco, with her husband, in a house on a hill. Her studio is in a cozy corner of the house, in a space filled with brushes and bottles, scraps of paper and paints. Her two dogs, Alex and Samantha, keep her company while she works. They nap and watch out the window for visitors, then nudge her with their cold black noses in the late afternoon when it is time for their walk. Katherine renders most of her work in oil paint. It mixes and flows in many different ways, providing seemingly endless possibilities for expression. Picture books fill many of the bookcases in her house and have always held a special place in her heart. I love this form of storytelling that pairs carefully chosen words with imaginative illustrations and binds them together in a package for hands to hold. Katherine is am working on my fifth picture book and the work continues to give her the same pleasure and excitement she felt so long ago in grade school when she brushed paint on paper and watched it form a tree.

Cute Freshman Outing in the World of Children's Literature

'Songs of Papa's Island' is a cute freshman outing for Barbara Kerley. In words it does capture the 'sights, sounds, and feelings of a unique and wonderful place,' as its inside cover states, though I can't help but feel that it would have benefited from more articulate illustrations. For their
individual merit, Katherine Tilllotson's images and cover are pleasant and incorporate a popular artistic style. (I feel like I've seen them passing souvenir shops, traveling down the southeastern coast - places like South Carolina, Florida and the Keys.) But I'm not sure how much they serve Barbara Kerley's 'songs' and ultimate story. They are far too simple in comparison to the narration. Admittedly designed for a younger audience, 'Where the Wild Things Are' is a masterful example of children's literature in which imagery heightens a story's words and lyricism and creates a vivid world. Twenty years later I can still conjure images of Maurice Sendak's intimidating, yet
approachable, wild-eyed monsters.
At the end of the day, Kerley's 'songs' don't resonate with me either and they lack the lyrical quality that the inside cover claims they have. Literarily her concept is clear. Emotively though it just doesn't connect. Songs by nature carry themes and Kerley's theme does not resonate. Her repetition - "Before you were born you lived on an island . . ." - seems dry and pallid. It lacks the kind of vibrancy that comes through good music or
poetry. On this note, there is also something strange, or let's say contradictory, about the work. When Kerley set out to write it, my impression is that she aimed to tell a story that nostalgically depicts a tropically idyllic place that teams with natural life. And for the most part, it's fair to say she accomplished this. But, in her stories to her daughter she
mentions things like a 'respirator,' 'throwing up,' 'fancy hotels,' and 'tourists'. Things of this nature seem to break with or detract from the intended tone and reality of the piece.

Strong on meanings, weak on histories

Maybe it goes without saying, since this is officially a "dictionary," that the emphasis is on the *meanings* of idioms. Far more interesting, however, would be a book explaining the origins and historical uses of idioms--this is what I was hoping for when I bought this.
Pages are many but the print is large--there's not as much here as AH wants you to think! The definitions are painfully elementary. If you're studying English as a second language, I'm sure this would be a big help. If you're seeking enlightenment, keep seeking!

A Great Reference!

Christine Ammer's Dictionary of Idioms is one of the best I've bought (I already have four). English is my second language and I have trouble keeping up with the innumerable idioms. So I use this reference almost every time I write. Better use that idiom correctly, right?
Unlike others I've used the entries in Ammer's are arranged alphabetically. They're not categorized as 'idioms preceded by a preposition', 'noun idioms', etc. Such dictionaries are so tedious to use! And the fact that the book is over 700 pages long in a 9 x 7 inch format can only mean that it has a comprehensive line-up of idioms. It isn't complete as I've discovered, but it has a very good range.
What's more it's cross referenced. If you remember only a keyword or two of the idiom you have in mind you can look up those words and check if the dictionary has entries for that idiom. For instance under the entry 'out' is listed probably a hundred idioms that has that preposition. As a bonus, Ammer has included for most entries a brief note on their origins.
Contrary to some reviews if you need a dependable reference on idioms this book is worth buying. Though not perfect it's extremely easy to use, helpful and packed with what it's suppose to have--lots of idioms!

Comprehensive and easy to use; weighted toward "old" idioms

This idiom dictionary is comprehensive, beautifully written, and well-organized. All of the idioms are listed alphabetically with clearly written explanations and examples. In addition, with many of the idioms, Ammer gives a brief (almost too brief, in my opinion) explanation of the origin of the idiom. My one complaint with this dictionary is that it is weighted toward older idioms (i.e. those related to the folk tales, drama, novels, the King James Bible, and the lifestyles of Medieval-Renaissance period in western Europe). This is understandable since many American idioms come from that place and time period, but The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms is definitely not the book to get for a comprehensive post-1950s listing of Americans idioms. Overall, this is a great resource for American idioms and a must for anyone creating ESL books and materials like myself.

At the supermarket, the count begins with one grocery cart and ends with ten hands helping to load the car. Back at home, the father joins in the preparations and the numbers build a second time to "ten hungry folks" seated around a table ready to share a tasty meal of fried chicken and greens. The successful rhyme scheme builds a natural rhythm that helps the simple text read smoothly. Collage illustrations combine colored paper, patterned fabrics, and felt in a clear, uncluttered design. Muted colors and simple shapes are set off by a stark white background. Most of the figures, especially the baby girl with her rounded limbs and bouncing braids, are animated and expressive. The creator of Clowning Around (1991) brings her strong sense of design to a counting book in which numbers are skillfully dovetailed into a simple depiction of an African- American family going marketing and then, in a second count from one to ten, preparing and serving a meal. With Mother, four children scouting for groceries, ``five kinds of beans'' (including jelly beans), ``six bunches of greens,'' and ``ten hands to help''--including Mother's but not baby's--a nice bit reasoning is needed to work out the counts, and it all works out logically. Falwell uses crisp, bright, beautifully designed collages of fabric and paper silhouetted on white for her warm portrayal of this lively, well-organized family, quietly incorporating contemporary touches (a recycling bin; males helping out in the kitchen). Depicts Black people without being about racism

We make sure at least 50% of the books we check out or buy depict non-White folks, as we are an adoptive family and I have a Black son along with three homegrown kiddos. I have noticed, most of those books we've found about African Americans, the ones not from Africa, are about racism, which I think is *vital* to talk about with kids, and we do, but I don't want every. single. book with Black people in it to be about racism. It gets heavy for the toddler and preschool set sometimes. This book is perfect!!!!! Illustrations are darling, we love it. It's so nice to see a black family in a book where it's *not* all about being black

Or about living in Africa, or living in the past, or some sort of troubles (modern or historical). It's so nice to just see a family doing what families *do*. (They even recycle!)

My nieces ask me to read this book to them often. It's a very fast book, suitable both for very young children and for slightly older ones. We love looking at various details - like the fact that "five kinds of beans" includes JELLY beans, or the fact that the baby sits on a lap at dinner. It's just a quick, sweet book.

A book packed with curriculum ideas!

This book has been around for a long time, but it continues to be a favorite in my classroom. It's one of those simple books that sparks so many different curriculum paths! Counting, number groupings, nutrition, cooperation, family activities, word choices, story writing, and more. It has also initiated collage art projects, quilt making, and paper mache vegetables! FEAST FOR 10 is a goldmine. I see that it's coming out in a board book soon, too. We have both the hardcover and several paperbacks in my class.

This unique book is a by-product of the CD-ROM Peterson Multimedia Guides: North American Birds. In producing this CD-ROM, the compilers discovered that there was no book that gave the life histories of birds in general. To remedy this, Kaufman expanded the descriptions of birds' lives that he developed for the Multimedia Guides to produce this beautifully organized book for the layperson. As he states in his acknowledgements, "Although there have been many multimedia products based on books, probably few books besides this one have started off in CD-ROM form."

Bird-watchers have relied on the Peterson Guides over the years to identify birds, giving names, habitat, descriptions, and distribution information. However, no guide has gone that additional step to describe what the bird is doing at the time it is being observed. Many scientific articles about birds do describe "what they are doing" in technical terms. Kaufman has translated all this information into layperson's language.

The book is organized so that when a particular page is consulted, it is easy to understand without referrring to other parts of the book. Each family has a brief overview that describes the bird and its feeding, nesting, and displaying characteristics. Additional information is given for the genus, followed by detailed facts about each species. This information includes a full-color photograph; a distribution map; habitat, feeding, nesting, and migration data; and conservation status, all in a concise, easy-to-read text. Illustrations, which were taken from the CD-ROM, are clear but small, with only one per species. Of particular interest is information on certain behavior and movement characteristics, which includes how food is acquired, how young are fed, mating rituals, what the young look like and how soon they leave the nest, and how they interact with other species in the competition for food and nesting sites. Additionally, there may be information on specific species about territory claiming, social aspects, songs and calls, pairing, courtship, eggs, clutch size, incubation, number of broods per year, what they eat, how they find food, molting, roosting, and life span.

Part of the Peterson Natural History Companion series, this is a must-have book to supplement any field guide. It could be used as a general field guide, although it is too big to fit into a coat pocket. It is a good alternative to field guides in a reference collection because it provides expanded information in a convenient, attractive format. Recommended for all bird-watchers and all libraries.

Accessible Species Accounts, a basic not to be without

The real advantage of Kenn Kaufman's book is its accessibility. Next to the Birder's Handbook, which tried several funky organizational and icongraphic systems at once, Kaufman is pure readability. The attractive, intelligent presentation here is immediately appealing. This serves double duty as a coffee table book and reference.
I read both this and the Birder's Handbook when I see something new. Kaufman gives you a solid account of each bird, but he's limited to individual species. (There are brief family introductions, written about at the level of the family intros in a field guide.) The essays in Birder's Handbook are very pleasing to browse into; in Kaufman, once you've read a species, you're on to another species. Kaufman has nothing to say, for example, about mobbing behavior. Birder's Handbook has a long essay, naming several species and discussing the state of research on the subject.
Kaufman is also less clear about what's missing about a bird. Birder's Handbook is held to its schematic approach, so you immediately know when there's a question mark in a location that's usually got a little symbol. Kaufman occasionally mentions that something isn't well known, but you have to read into the essay to find that.
As complements to a field guide, both this and The Birder's Handbook are useful and enjoyable. I personally wouldn't be happy without either one.

Pretty good but in Illinois I prefer Cheryl DeVore's book on birds of Illinois. Lots of good info but the photos don't help an amateur make IDs much.

A great book from one of the best!

There are so many books about birds one wonders which are the best .There is no answer to that question.I have over 1000 'bird books' and I felt this one was worth buying.It is written by one of the most knowledgeable and dedicated birders in North America today.

His 'Birds of North America'is one of the best field guides for a birder to buy to carry with him to help learn about and identify birds.He particularly had the non-expert in mind when he wrote it.

His 'Kingbird Highway' is one of the best books around about his experiences as a 16 year old trying to beat the record of seeing the most species in North America in one year.

His 'Advanced Birding' was written for expert birders having difficulty sorting some of the toughest birds to identify.

Now he gives us a book filled with much more detailed information on each bird. He covers habitat,feeding,behavior,nesting,migration and the conservation status.He has also included up-to date range maps.He has written all this material in a very easy to understand manner.

One would not probably want to buy this as their first or only bird book;but it would be a great book to buy after having an identification book.It's a great book for any birder whether just getting started or been birding for some time.It is too large to take with you in the field (birding);but excellent to have at home for reference.

I just concluded a government course at a university, and I highly recommend this book to fellow students. It gives a thorough and up-to-printing review of things that have affected American goverment The authors really go into detail about some issues, so if that's the kind of thing that you're seeking, then this book is great. It gives a general definition of what will be discussed throughout the book, and then moves into more specified areas of government, say, voting. Then the book provides ample detail and history of voting, and discusses voting trends, voting habits, and nonvoting habits and trends. I like it (it's helped me get through the course) and I found it a very useful tool to understanding everything that happens in the American government system.

It goes into great deal about the constitutional underpinnings, and even discusses todays most powerful lobbys. It is surprising current. Mouse's first foray out of the hold of the sailing ship where he lives with his family leads to a disastrous encounter with a cat and a plunge into the sea. Washed up on an island, he escapes from one dangerous animal after another until he is captured by Lion, who admires his courage and lets him go. A few hours later, Mouse hears Lion's cry of distress and rescues him from a hunter's net. Lion then arranges for Mouse to return to his family. The augmented tale moves quickly enough to keep children's interest but lacks the focused simplicity and dignity that makes the traditional version so appealing. Each two-page spread has a full-page of illustration faced by one of text. The middle of the text page contains a round hole that first gives a peek at an element in the next picture and, when the page is turned, looks back at part of the preceding painting. The devise is adequate, but it is sometimes difficult to determine just what is being shown through the peep hole. The colors in the pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations have such a similarity of tone and are so busy with details and crosshatching that the figures are frequently overpowered by the backgrounds. The Lion and the Mouse

This bokk is interesting. It retells the classic tale in a different way than we all learned it. The author takes you through the mouse's brave journey through the jungle where he meets seceral different jungle animals before disturbing the lion who eventually shows him the way back home.

This story is very long in text and might be too long for very young children. This is a great book to read together with a young school age child.

a great find

My daughter teaches kindergarten and wanted another Lion and the Mouse by Jerry Pinkney which I ordered but it has no words. She used it but likes to read to kids. She loved this book and now the kids tell the story when looking at the wordless book. A great find.
