Is it okay to have fun while Dad grows sicker and sicker? Why does everyone at school treat him like someone special after the funeral, but later clam up when he wants to talk about his father? Bouma's pencil illustrations have a rough feel, almost as if they were sketches rather than finished pieces, a stylistic choice that works well with the understated tone of the text. Grade 2-4-This short chapter book chronicles the last year of a father's life through the eyes of his nine-year-old son. The story begins and ends with a birthday celebration where upside-down cake is served first with, then without, the parent. Readers will empathize with the narrator as he struggles with his emotions and relates how holidays and daily events are changed by his father's illness and impending death. The boy's relationship with his Mom, toddler sister, grandparents, and a friend add realistic details to a story of a family dealing with cancer. Bouma's black-and-white sketch drawings offer representations of both sad and happy times throughout the year. A well-written book on a difficult subject.

The boy's birthday is the day before his dad's, so they celebrate together and take turns choosing the cake. The father's favorite is the upside-down cake of the title. Just after the boy turns 9 and his dad 40, the dad is diagnosed with cancer. Dad, kept at home, gets weaker and weaker. The narrator's four-year-old sister relieves the tension but doesn't quite understand what is happening; his mom has to leave her job and spend her time caring for Dad. When his father dies, the boy expresses fear, grief, guilt, and anger in terms children will understand: he worries when he stops thinking about his dad while shooting baskets, and he notices bleakly that his friends are uncomfortable when he talks about his father at the school lunch table. The gentle messages--that no one can protect a person from loss, that things do get easier, and that loved ones live in memory--are simply stated, and the cozy pencil sketches by Patty Bouma are straightforward and reassuring. We all know everybody will die someday

We all know everybody will die someday, but it's very difficult to accept the fact that one of our family died or will die soon, especially for a child. In this work, it's well described how he feels and how he gets over his father's death. Ms.Carrol says that the death is the part of life. She also says we should be accostomed to the death in the life so we should know how to remember and how to look back upon the days when we spent with the dead. That's exactly to live with them in real life.

A gentle and realistic look at a young father's death

The adult(s) who are trying to help child will have to decide if this story may help the child feel less alone in grieving a parent's death. It is a wonderful book, but it won't be the right book for every child. However, the book also has value for older siblings, parents and other relatives. Because the story shows with great honesty and care how one child and one mother dealt with a young father's death, it may help others in their conversations with a child whose parent has died.

The author's note states that Paul Revere, John Hancock, and John Adams regarded Samuel Adams as their "political father," and Thomas Jefferson called him "the Man of the Revolution." Following discussions of Adams' youth, education, and family, the text follows his work to provoke and promote the revolution and provides an excellent summary of events from the point of view of one participant. The chapters that follow include Adams' influence on the Constitution and his career as lieutenant governor and governor of Massachusetts. Although Fradin clearly admires Adams, he doesn't shrink from pointing out the man's flaws in areas such as grooming, supporting his family, or twisting the truth to suit his purposes. In this literary portrait, Adams emerges as a complex man, idealistic yet practical, whose influence on American history can hardly be underestimated. Black-and-white illustrations, including reproductions of portraits, engravings, and documents, appear throughout the book. In an unusually personal and readable afterword, Fradin tells of his visits to Boston sites and to a reenactment of the Battle of Lexington as well as a search for an Adams artifact of his own. This is an excellent book on a great patriot leader.

My wife and I like to read books on American history to our sons (ages 7 and 8) and were absolutely delighted with this book. Samuel Adams was one of the most important of the patriot leaders, but one about whom little is said these days. That is too bad because no one was a truer, more consistent believer in freedom than he was. Samuel Adams opposed England's taxes and mercantilist trade restrictions; he was just as vociferous an opponent of slavery. Fraidin's writing is clear and easily understood by children, but this is not a childish book. The parents enjoyed and got as much out of it as did the children did. If you think it is important for young Americans to know the history and philosophy of our independence, this book is one give them.

Although this is a children's book, it is "must reading" for any adult who wants to re-energize their enthusiasm for the origin of America. I got this book for my grandchildren, but after reading it myself, decided that it's an adult book as well.
The author has succeeded in making the reader understand the genius of Samuel Adams of Boston. The type of grassroots politics practiced by Adams and other patriots, clearly is as valid today as in theirs.
Always focused upon the ultimate goal, "the last Puritan" was given the title by his peers of "the father of American independence". Author Fradin has been successful in pointing out why Adams deserves the title.
The story is breathtaking. If I had one wish regarding this wonderful book, it would be that every American child hears or reads the story. They would be better Americans for it.
Thanks to Dennis Fradin for writing it. I was so impressed with it, that after reading it I called the author to personally thank him.
An exciting experience awaits young and old when they pick up this book.

"O.K.," for instance, appeared in 1838 as part of a Boston fad for abbreviations--in this case, the humorously misspelled "all correct." "Rock and roll," America's equally famous contribution to the world lexicon, was first popularized in 1951 by disc jockey Alan Freed--his way to sidestep a prohibition against playing African American music for white audiences. From skunk and canoe in the 16th century to virtual reality and soccer mom in the late 20th century, this year-by-year review highlights words that have had an indelible American origin or meaning. Barnhart and Metcalf, two longtime lexicographers, have selected one particularly significant word for each year and, through anecdotes and historical details, discuss its roots, development, and importance. In 1864, for example, a deadline was an actual line drawn in the dirt to restrict Civil War prisoners ("If you cross this line, you're dead"). The 1891 term country club is juxtaposed with sweatshop in 1892 and connected by the apt little poem: "The golf links lie so near the mill/ That almost every day/ The laboring children can look out/ And see the men at play." This highly selective etymological dictionary of more than 300 of "the best and the brightest" American words was compiled by two longtime students of American English--Barnhart, a lexicographer, and Metcalf, a college professor of English. Arrangement is chronological. The words chosen--a representative one for selected years from 1555 (canoe) to 1748 (buck), and one for each year from 1750 to 1998--are discussed in historical context, sometimes updated with contemporary quotations and with additional words similar to or connected to the key word or phrase. For example, the entry sexism and ageism (1969) mentions other -isms, and Watergate (1972) mentions other -gate terms. Black-and-white illustrations accompany some entries. The introduction has a note on sources, which include titles such as The Dictionary of American Regional English, The Random House Historical Dictionary of American Slang, and the periodical Barnhart Dictionary Companion, as well as standard English-language dictionaries.

The entries are organized into six chapters, from "The English in America: 1497^-1750" to "Nearing the Millennium: 1945^-1998." Words are assigned to the year in which they were "newly coined or newly prominent." Entries range in length from half a page to just over a whole page. Some examples of entries from the first chapter are turkey (1607), New England (1616), public school (1636), and ice cream (1744). The concluding chapter features rock and roll (1951), fast food (1954), soccer mom (1996), Ebonics (1997), and millennium bug (1998). An index by word brings together all keywords and words discussed in the text, and an index by date lists each year from 1555 and its keyword.

Most of the words and phrases found here also appear in other dictionaries of American English, but this book puts a new spin on their definitions. It should appeal to both browsers and reference personnel in high-school, public, and academic libraries. It supplements more scholarly works, such as those listed in the source notes in the introduction.

An Interesting Perspective On US History

This book gives the historical background of over three hundred words that are in some way uniquely American-born. Boring, you say? Never! The entries are arranged chronologically and include some words that you might suspect (underground railroad, motel) and quite a few that may surprise you (hello, bathtub, bug). Each entry provides a fascinating look at the people and times that led to the development of the word. An index lets you look up specific words.

I found this book about as exciting as reading last week's weather report.I waded through it but finally gave up a little from the end.Language and the derivation of words and phrases is an interesting and colorful subject;but little was found in this book.There is much more to producing a good book than collecting up a bunch of stuff and sticking it between a couple of covers.Don't waste your "coin" (not covered by the way) as you'll forget what's in it as soon as you read it.

This delightful book evokes the true spirit of Thanksgiving!

When selecting books for our children, I try to pick stories that will hold their attention, provide an important message, and involve animals and/or nature. Eve Bunting’s book A Turkey For Thanksgiving has all of these criteria - and more! It is also a good book for children who are vegetarians or vegans.
In A Turkey For Thanksgiving Mrs. Moose is preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for her and Mr. Moose’s animal friends. However, this year she has decided that she wants a turkey for dinner so Mr. Moose, joined by his friends, sets off to find one. Eventually a turkey is found by the river and brought back for dinner. The terrified turkey is delighted, and relieved, to learn that he isn’t the main course, but a guest at this vegetarian feast! This delightful book evokes the true spirit of Thanksgiving. –Reviewed by Glenn Perrett

Rather, each left-hand page is a fully developed scene of a kindly white-bearded farmer in some part of his modest farm with all the animals as they are mentioned. On the right are the three repeated lines about Old MacDonald having a. . . . In the middle of this page is a hole, two inches in diameter, exposing a part of the next animal in the picture on the following page. The picture, when fully exposed by turning the page, is equally detailed, and the hole frames the farmer's face from the previous picture--a consistently neat piece of design. Jones' approach is naturalistic with a soft overlay of humor: this is a happy farm. Her fine black inked lines structure a benign world that is as peaceable a kingdom as one could wish, an animated rather than static one. The transparent watercolors create a lush, late-summer bucolic comfortable rightness where all the animals, birds, frogs, insects, rodents, and man live in peace. My daughters loved it!

My daughters loved it they go around asking for their E-I-E-I-O book all day long. They even ask to take it to bed. Many fights have been waged between my twins over who will get the honors.
I like the little windows on the pages which give a little away, but not too much, of the animal that is on the farm. Nicely illustrated!

A simple premise for a book...a familiar nursery rhyme song, but Carol Jones has given it a new life with her strikingly detailed illustrations. My son (4) really loves discovering the minute touches she added...a great book to sit and look through together. Definitely one we'll keep!

Phenomenal Art & Clever Picture Holes in this classic tale

This book has amazing drawings in it. Carol Jones is very talented. I rarely write reviews for books but this one has definitely impressed me. Not only are the pictures breathtaking, but many of the pages have a circular hole cut out of the middle so you get a peek at the next animal coming up in the tale, and when you look back at the previous page from the other side, you see Old MacDonald. This is truly a gem of a book. My highest praises to the illustrator!

Good book for beginning Itaian classes

We used this book in our level 1 and 2 Italian course (and I understand that it is also used in the streamlined Italian course at Harvard), and I found it quite good. Each chapter focuses on a particular aspect of life and a place in Italy (e.g. Chapter 3 is on the family and is set in Sicilia), and has several dialogs that serve to introduce words and phrases. Each section (4 sections to a chapter) has a vocabulary list, along with grammatical points and exercises.
The book introduces a lot of idiomatic expressions and phrases, which makes it easier for me to understand my italian friends. My professor pointed out, though, that the language used in the dialogs is not quite "authentic" -- maybe understandable since people usually use words that are unfit to print when they argue, and there are a LOT of arguments in the dialogs =)
The dialogs in the book do not have english translations. After the first few chapters, almost everything is in Italian, except for the grammar sections, which are always in English.
Grammar is pretty well covered. I did notice that the authors did not include the future anterior tense, and the conjugations for some irregular verbs (er, the verbs ending in -rre, I think).
A workbook can be purchased with the book. It was very useful for written practice, although the book by itself has a lot of exercises (both oral and written).
The tapes which go with the book (and which we used in our language lab) did not help a lot. The video, however, was VERY cool. It made me happy to find myself actually understanding the "real" italian spoken by the characters, who are touring Italy to write a travel guide. There's a love angle to the story (I could have sworn Piero and Gabriella were falling for each other!), but I didn't find the end of the story fulfilling. I certainly would have preferred to see them going out ;-)
The CD is dispensible. It basically contains a review of the Italian alphabet, a transcription of the dialogs in English and italian (with audio), some games based on the dialogs, and a way to compare your voice pattern with an Italian speaker. The games are very annoying though, since the questions tend to be of the fill-in-the-blank type, based *directly* on the dialogs.
In summary, this is a good book, although I think it is better suited for use in a classroom setting. The book is even more enjoyable with the video, so if you can somehow gain access to it, do watch.

In this pandemonious, prepossessing debut, a girl allows a succession of antic animals into the house to chase a lively mouse which is itself dashing after an elusive hunk of Swiss cheese. But the striped cat gets sidetracked by a goldfish, the pig would rather eat cake, and so on, until the house fills with a number of animals embroiled in as many pursuits. The bedeviled narrator calls for reinforcements--from the cow, the horse and finally, the elephant. The rhyming text ("Send in the Hog / to shoo the Dog!") is whimsical and appropriate; the meter, however, is often slightly off ("The Horse kicked a hole in the wall. / Send in the Elephant to get rid of them ALL!"). Readers can predict which animal will visit next by visual clues skillfully integrated into Lee's deliberately flattened gouaches, which have a two-dimensional quality akin to children's own art. Riotous colors and patterns--yellow-and-purple checkboard tiles, aquamarine living room walls, a flowery red-orange sofa--provide bright backdrops for Lee's rambunctious menagerie. Ages 2-3.

PreSchool-K-- In order to rid her house of a mouse, a young girl sends in larger and larger animals who each in turn cause a fair amount of ruckus and confusion, adding to her problems. Children will laugh at the chaos each animal creates, and enjoy finding the framed portrait of the one that will make the next appearance. Yee's childlike watercolor illustrations are quite pleasing and work well with the text. As more and more animals enter the picture, they create more and more amusing antics. On one page, the hog is wearing the lampshade of a lamp that the cat knocked over, while on another page he is juggling three eggs that the hen laid. The perfect children's book

My husband picked this book up at the library the other week. My kids are 3.5 and 2 years old, and I think this is the most ideal book for their age range. We have some of those "award winning classic" children's books that the kids have absolutely no interest in. I don't know if this book has ever won any awards, but it should be a classic. It grabbed the interest of my kids in several ways. It has a simple rhyme, each page starts with an exclamation that the kids like to immitate, a different animal, and different actions.

For instance:
Dear Me!
The Dog has broken the dish.
And now the cat is after the fish.
Send in the Hog
To shoo that Dog!

Each page introduces a different animal, and they're doing things like dancing, eating, kicking holes in the wall, getting tangled in yarn, etc. And each page has something visually interesting. After a week of reading this to my kids, my 3.5 year old already knows most of the words, and my 2 year old likes to point out things going on in the pictures.

Winsome silliness that is sure to elicit giggles

Another charming picture book from the creator of "Fireman Small" shows an escalating series of animal hijinx: a mouse is discovered in the house, so in comes the cat to chase that rat, in comes the dog to chase the cat, and so on, all the way up to the elephant. The illustrations are charming and feature visual puns for parents (note, for example, the "duck soup") while kids are sure to love the sweetly humourous animals. The story is told in simple rhyme, with plenty of exclamations and animal absurdity to make your toddler giggle.
