I hate this book

I teach Spanish and the reason I hate this book is because it introduces
concepts and then gives little or no practice. The order in which
things are introduced is a confusing at times. There is way too much
eye candy and not enough attention to working out the kinks.
Other superior products are available at a much more reasonable price.

Too Many Options to Fall for This One

I am a Spanish teacher, and there are quite a few reasons why I do not like this book. Overall, my qualms can be summed up by saying that the book is flawed in terms of organization, opportunities for practice, clarity of instructions, and ability to use for remediation or self study.
The organization of this book has little logic. Ar verbs are taught in a completely different chapter from er/ir verbs. There are little links to the chapter opener stories in terms of application of knowledge and acquisition of new grammatical concepts. You are simply given the story and a video and there are no activities that subsequently require students to analyze what they read and heard in light of having been introduced to the new grammatical concepts found therein.
Practice is critical to language learning, and this book teaches the preterite, one of the most difficult concepts for Spanish language learners, and provides only 3 or 4 practice activities. There is also entirely too much vocabulary per chapter. There are more opportunities to practice vocabulary than there are to practice grammar, but the vocab would be overwhelming if you tried to cover it all in the time it takes to cover the grammatical concepts within the chapter.
In the way of clarity, grammar intros are good and generally clear, but instructions that accompany activities are less than clear and the activities themselves are often unclear, despite students' knowledge of the actual grammatical concepts. The activities usually require the teacher to provide separate instructions because even the English provided doesn't make these activities feasible for students to conquer alone. However, the workbook activities, aside from the listening, are generally perfect. I have made it through only because the workbook and worksheets available on the accompanying easy planner cd-rom are actually logical, functional, and effective.
The accompanying workbook is far better than the textbook activities, but even it lacks enough practice. The listening is a train wreck because some activities are on cd, some say that they are but are only available in a script in the teacher textbook. Also, the listening activities often are not just testing language comprehension, but are more often testing critical thinking skills. Imagine the frustration of your students when they are only beginners in a language and they are expected to both interpret and apply critical thinking when they are at a level at which their basic language knowledge is far too weak to succeed at this. I will say that they listening does succeed at providing exposure to different dialects, though I do wish there were more. In the entire level one, there is only Mexico, Ecuador, and Spain. That is an entire two years (our level II in my county goes only from ch2 to a couple of chapters into the level II En Espanol book) with no culture lessons or linguistic exposure to the countries that are most heavily represented in their communities.
Self study is a critical component to language acquisition. Unfortunately, having this book is worthless to a language learner if the teacher is not present. This book was certainly not created with self study in mind. If a student misses a class session or is shaky on a given topic, this is not the book that would allow them to regain their confidence through a little self study. As a language learner myself, the ability to use a book for self study has been key to my success with Spanish and with other languages, but this book does not realistically provide the necessary tools that allow for successful self study or self-guided remediation.
Overall, I wouldn't recommend this book. It does have great notes for various class application activities, all broken down into the various modes of learning, but the book itself just doesn't make the grade in more ways than one. It requires supplementation from far too many additional sources to make it a worthwhile purchase.

I can't understand my husband any more...

The text book is very good. My husband is getting quite fluent. He wanted to learn Spanish because he has several friends that speak the language. Now he can not only understand but converse well with them. Thank you!
