Grade 5 Up-This anthology tells the stories of 14 Jewish children who were hidden by non-Jews during the Holocaust. Despite the different settings-Poland, France, Belgium, Lithuania, Germany, and Holland-these first-person accounts show that the survivors share vivid memories and feelings that still haunt them. Rosenberg spoke with each of them, but unfortunately narrates their recollections in an understated, matter-of-fact style with a sameness that obscures the highly individualized nature of each experience. Still, the heroism of the people involved makes for compelling reading. Milton Meltzer's Rescue (1991) relates similar stories from the viewpoints of the youngsters' rescuers, while his Never to Forget (1976, both HarperCollins) includes some stories of children who were hidden along with many other first-person survivor accounts. Elaine Landau's We Survived the Holocaust (Watts, 1991), Ina Friedman's Escape or Die (Yellow Moon, 1991), and David Adler's We Remember the Holocaust (Holt, 1989) all deal with the subject from the perspectives of young people who were saved by hiding as well as those who escaped from camps; there are also many full-length memoirs that cover the same territory, sometimes with more dramatic impact than that found in Rosenberg's book. Despite its stylistic uniformity, this volume, illustrated with black-and-white photographs of the subjects, is an adequate addition for libraries without comparable titles in their collection.

Gr. 5-10. The telling is restrained; there are no histrionics in these 14 first-person accounts by Jewish Holocaust survivors who were hidden from the Nazis as children. In fact, some of the narratives are almost flat; it's as if the speakers don't want to make a fuss, as if the suffering is too unbearable to talk about. The survivors are Americans now, most of them in their fifties and sixties, remembering. Each oral history includes a heartbreaking photo of the child and family in wartime and then a photo of the survivor today. A brief postscript summarizes what the child didn't know at the time and what has happened since to the survivors and those who hid them. Perhaps because the speakers are adults looking back, their accounts don't have the immediacy of the child's viewpoint that makes Ida Vos' Hide and Seek (1991) so compelling. Nor do these stories have the candor and the graphic intensity of Greenfeld's Hidden Children.

The drama here is in the children's relationships with the righteous Gentiles who saved them. It's an inspiring story of ordinary people who risked death to rescue strangers. They hid children for all kinds of reasons, some of which they didn't know themselves. They created secret hideouts in convents, in homes, in chicken coops. These quiet accounts also make you imagine what it must have been like for the child who spent months crouching in a hayloft, who had to hide that he was circumcised, who was suddenly wrenched from his parents. One survivor does remember how he felt as a teenager ("I wanted to be with girls. I was furious that I wasn't able to. I hated being locked up"). Or there's the woman who remembers her reunion with her father in the U.S.: when he finally recognizes her, "he hugged me so tightly, I was nearly black and blue." Remembering is hard. Hazel Rochman

An excellent complement to Greenfield's Hidden Children (1993), with a brief summary of Hitler's rise and anti-Semitic policies followed by 14 first-person narratives based on interviews. Belgium is the most frequent setting; Poland, Hungary, Holland, France, and Greece are also represented. Rosenberg (Being Adopted [1984] among other ``photographic essays about children'') leaves readers to make their own comparisons among these diverse ordeals; although their details differ dramatically, common themes include the unremitting ingenuity needed to survive and the close bonds that grew between these children and their temporary parents. Gratifyingly, the author includes photos of the children and their hosts plus recent portrait photos and ``postscripts'' on their subsequent lives. Invaluable. Glossary; further reading. Interesting

I really enjoyed the experience of reading this book- I am a history teacher, with World War II being a time period I am particularly interested in, so I read books along this vein quite a bit. My soft heart particularly likes to read works describing how, even in the midst of a horrible time period, there is still goodness to be found, and stories of individual heroism. I also learned quite a bit, particularly about how often siblings were split up to make their hiding easier (I guess I have read too many books like the Diary of Anne Frank and the Upstairs Room where siblings were together and didn't think about all the times families/siblings got split up during hiding.) It is also a very short book (about 150 pages) and so a quick and worthwhile read.

A little bit sad...

Maxine Rosenberg, does a wonderful job of editing the heartbreaking non fiction stories of people who thrived during the Holocaust in the late 1930s and early 1940s. In Hiding to Survive, victims of the Holocaust tell about their tragic life stories. Each of the 14 people who share their past experiences were young children during the Holocaust. They had to leave their family in one way or another and learn to adjust to new settings and a new environment. Some of these people even went as far as to deny their Jewish heritage and religion. It is unknown how many Jewish children actually survived or escaped from the Holocaust. On the outside, this book is just a group of people telling their life stories. But if you look into it, it teaches you to never take your family, or anything for that matter, for granted.

I am an 11 year old sixth grader. Hiding to Survive is a book about hidden children during the Holocaust. In the first area of the book, there is a small summary about the Holocaust and hiding. Paulette Pomeranz is the first hidden child to be written about. This is a very good book if you want to know something about hidden children. The bad part is that there is no telling if they died or not. That's a vital piece of information. I liked this book because I really care about people and I want to create World Peace 1!

Grade 5 Up-Using the photographer's work throughout, Freedman provides a documentary account of child labor in America during the early 1900s and the role Lewis Hine played in the crusade against it. He offers a look at the man behind the camera, his involvement with the National Child Labor Committee, and the dangers he faced trying to document unjust labor conditions. Solemn-faced children, some as young as three years old, are shown tending looms in cotton mills or coated with coal dust in the arresting photos that accompany the explanations of the economics and industries of the time. Both Freedman's words and quotes from Hine add impact to the photos, explaining to contemporary children the risky or fatiguing tasks depicted. Details such as Hine's way of determining children's height by measuring them against his own coat buttons add further depth and a personal touch to the already eloquent statements made by his thoughtfully composed black-and-white portraits. Also included are some of the photographer's other projects throughout his career. Readers will not only come to appreciate the impact of his groundbreaking work, but will also learn how one man dedicated and developed his skill and talents to bring about social reform.

Gr. 5-9. The selection of photographs in Freedman's works (he generally picks the photos himself) is usually as impressive as the text. That's certainly true of this book, which uses pictures to chronicle the state of child labor in early-twentieth-century America while profiling the life of reformer-photographer Lewis Hine. In his characteristically direct, unpretentious fashion, Freedman explains what Hine discovered as an investigative photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (a "militant" group that crusaded for such things as compulsory education), illustrating the revelations with haunting black-and-white pictures--many secured without the permission of factory owners--that bear witness to deplorable working conditions. Anecdotes and Hine's own words will pique interest in both the situations encountered and in Hine himself. The history and biography are not as smoothly entwined or as well detailed here as they have been in some of Freedman's other books (there's not quite enough about the socioeconomic underpinnings to satisfy report writers, and Hine's later life gets short shrift), but there's still a great deal to arouse and to inform, and the visual impact is unforgettable. Freedman's bibliography can guide readers toward more information, while materials like Meltzer's recent Cheap Raw Material can flesh out the necessary background. Hate school? Your life could be so much worse...

Freedman has collected dozens of black and white photographs taken by Lewis Hine during the first decades of the twentieth century. Hine worked as an investigational photographer for the National Child Labor Committee (NCLC). The NCLC wanted the United States government to pass laws concerning child labor, and thought that photos of the work children did would be more effective persuaders than mere speeches and statistics. Hine traveled the nation with his camera taking photographs, sometimes despite risk to his person.
The text of the book serves partly as a brief biography of Lewis Hine, and partly as explanatory backdrop for the scenes in the photographs. Freeman gives enough background information to put the images in their context, but not so much data as to overwhelm the reader. The machines, tools and environments are so strange to the modern eye that without clarification, many pictures would be meaningless.
The most shocking photographs in the collection are of the young boys involved in the coalmines. The filth on their faces, hands and clothing is astonishing. By comparison, the dangers and deplorable conditions of working in a cotton mill are not as readily apparent as those of working in a coal mine. However, reading Freeman's text exposes the dangers of moving machinery and smothering lint and humidity not so clear in the photos.
The book concludes by sharing the changes in child labor laws that Hine's photographs helped bring about, as well as information on the child labor situation of today.
This book is full of eye opening and shocking information for the unaware. School may be hard, but without child labor laws things could be so much worse.

Kids at Work ~ a real eye-opener

I found and bought this book at the Goodwill and thought it would be nice for looking at the photographs, since we like to look at real historical photos in our homeschool. Well, I decided to start reading the book and couldn't put it down. It didn't take long to finish it and I really enjoyed it. It was a real eye-opener. How interesting that Hines had to sneak around and often hide in order to get his photographs. He might tell a shop owner that he needed a photograph of a machine, but then asked the child worker to stand next to it so people could see the large size of the machine. Of course, he was really showcasing the child who had to run the machine. He knew exactly how many inches from the ground each button on his vest was, so a child could stand next to him and he could quickly tell how tall they were. When most of the photos in the book were taken, there were over 2 million American children younger than 16 who worked 12 or more hours a day, 6 days a week, for pitiful wages under unhealthy and hazardous conditions.

My youngest child is 5 and many of the photos were of children the same age, and younger, working in places like cotton fields or in spinner factories, many with bare feet. What a tragic life these children had, most not living very long. How would you like to work in a glass factory with the temperature in the building 100 - 130 degrees? The molten glass they worked with was 3,133 degrees! These glassblower assistants made about 65 cents a day; a pretty good wage back then. But, because it was so hazardous and unhealthy in the glass houses, these assistants usually didn't live past the age of 42 (I just turned 42 this year!).

How sad to see pictures of the breaker boys in the coal mines hunched over, all day long, picking the slate and stones from the coal. The foreman would hit them on their heads or shoulders with a broom handle if he thought they weren't working hard enough. If they fell into the coal chute, they would quickly be smothered to death. Do you think shucking oysters or peeling shrimp would be easier? The shrimp oozed an acid that would eat holes in leather shoes and tin pails, yet children had to handle these with their bare little fingers. 4-year old Mary could shuck two pails of oysters each day, making 10 cents. One mother and her 4 children worked in their tenement apartment making paper forget-me-not-flowers. All 5 of them sat working every day, all day long, working by the light of a kerosene lamp. The youngest, Angelica, was 3-years old and could make 540 flowers a day, earning her family 5 cents.

I think most children and adults today have no clue what life was really like for people back then; how hard they had to work for such little pay. I can't imagine my 5-year old doing what these kids were forced to do, let alone go without Nick Jr. for one day. I think this is an excellent book for children and adults to read and discuss. I plan on having my 14-year old read it this year for school. It's a book definitely worth reading and looking at.

This is a nonfiction photographic essay book that will touch any reader's heart. Mr. Freedman seems to know the facts and life of Mr. Hine very well. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book as wee. The information at the end seemed hard to believe but true. The book is only 11 years old so the facts aren't that dated. There are many saddening facts in this book. It reveals the truths about child labor in the text and photos.

The book was written to shine light on child labor history and to showcase some of Mr. Hine's photographs. The book is very interesting to read. There are quotes from some kids who worked in the factories and also some quotes from Mr. Hine who took great pride in accurately recording the facts about his subjects. This book could spark an interest in further study of this topic.

The information in this book is broken down and presented in an understandable order. The text is a harsh reality but it is presented well. The style gets the reader emotionally involved. The language is relatively simple and easy to read.

The information is laid out well and the references are listed in the back. There is a table of contents and bibliography and acknowledgement page.

The photos are a wonderful enhancement. The book would be nothing with out them. They are strategically placed and make the book what it is. There are captions that describe the pictures and they are discussed in the text.

This book could be used in the classroom to show what life was like and to talk about immigration and economic conditions.

Great supplement for school

I got this as a supplement for teaching The Crucible to 10th graders. It's a co-taught, special needs class room, so we have everything from gifted and talented kids who already read at the 12th+ grade level to kids to are struggling to read at a 5th grade level. The supplemental texts at the end provided a wide variety of additional comparative texts. We've gone fully to the Common Core and I'm always looking for texts that "talk to each other." This provides a wide range of genres from poetry, fiction, historical nonfiction, & essay to address many different areas and reading comprehension levels. Excellent supplemental text for any teacher!

I love this book. It is accurate and an easy read. I finished it in about a day. In addition to the the play, there are other related readings enclosed which give more insight to historical events and other perspectives. Out of all the copies I own, this is one of the better ones. A great deal, ships quickly and reasonably priced.

About the Author
Dr. William Boyes is professor of economics at Arizona State University. He received his Ph.D. in economics from the Claremont Graduate School in 1974. Before joining the Arizona State faculty, he was the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Business at Weber State University; visiting professor at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China and the University of London, London, England, and lectured at ITAM in Mexico City; and was the dean of the College of Business at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. Dr. Boyes has also served as chairman of the Economics Department at ASU and has been an economist with Security Pacific National Bank (now Bank of America). He has been a consultant to the White House, the Commerce Department, the Federal Trade Commission, and several private firms. He is the director of the office of economic education at ASU and a member of the Pacific Research Institute's Academic Advisory Board. Dr. Boyes has received many teaching awards, including the Golden Key National Honor Society Outstanding Professor Award at ASU in 1988, the Outstanding Teacher in the MBA Program Award at ASU in 1994, the Outstanding Teacher in the College of Business Award at ASU in 1995, Huizingh Outstanding Honors Professor in 2007, and Outstanding MBA Professor in 2008.

Michael Melvin is currently Head of Currency Research at Barclays Global Investors. He also retains affiliations at the Arizona State University Department of Economics and the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Melvin received his Ph.D. in economics from UCLA in 1980. He has served as a visiting scholar at the Federal Reserve Board and the International Monetary Fund, was a Fulbright Professor at the University of Frankfurt, and has been a visiting professor at UCLA, Northwestern University, U.C. San Diego, and the University of Hawaii. His field of specialization is International Finance, and he is the coeditor of the Journal of International Money and Finance.

Meyers, the author of 12 earlier biographies, gets off to a less-than-persuasive start by asserting that "now" he can reveal that Frost's (1874-1963) love poems after his wife's death can be traced to his passion, beginning at 64, for his married secretary, who was his mistress. The accommodation with her complaisant husband has been acknowledged in print since at least 1990. Furthermore, Meyers contends that his biography will overturn Frost's unpleasant reputation as "a mean old bastard," yet the life as he relates it is a litany of unlikability. While some earlier segments of the narrative seem Meyers's most felicitous biographical prose to date, the pace is clotted with digressions. His editorial "we" is also off-putting, and numerous flash-forwards interrupt the life and result in later repetitions. The promised "new view" of Frost's character fails to materialize, although the "original interpretations of his poems" is in some cases satisfying. His life outside his books, in Meyers's account, is a series of relocations to farmhouses or campuses, followed by public readings that Frost claimed to despise but that fed his purse and his vanity. His classical education, life experiences, relationships with others (including contemporary writers), and personal statements constantly elucidate his work. Meyers's comparisons to images and language in the Bible, the classics, and poets such as Keats and Hardy (further enhanced by an appendix called "Literary Allusions") assist teens in understanding connections among literary works. Frequent explications of Frost's lines/stanzas/poems are seamlessly woven into the narrative of his life. The conversational, almost gossipy tone of this sympathetic view of the poet hastens readers along, and they are provided with enough detail to grasp his importance in American literature. Frost wrote that poetry is "a way of taking life by the throat." Perhaps the same comment could be made about Meyers's take on the life, private and public, of the great poet. A prolific biographer (e.g., Edmund Wilson: A Biography, LJ 2/15/95), Meyers offers a different view of Frost from the one commonly held (largely generated by Lawrence Thompson's critical biography, Robert Frost: A Biography, 1982) of a mean-spirited, uncaring husband and father and an enemy of other poets. Meyers writes?not judgmentally?that Frost was touchy and frequently insecure, yet the biographer gives ample evidence that Frost possessed a great wit, conversed brilliantly, and was capable of personal generosity and courage. Meyers believes that Frost lived his life for and through poetry and that poetry prompted many of his responses to events ranging from the seduction of his wife to the death of his children. In light of these and other conclusions, Meyers's interpretation of Frost's poetry offers an invaluable contribution to understanding and accepting the best and the most controversial aspects of Frost the man and poet. A REVIEW, FROM SOMEWHERE NORTH OF BOSTON...

This is a solid, workmanlike biography of Robert Frost. It will probably appeal more to the reader who wants to know about Frost the man as opposed to the reader who is more interested in the poetry. There are some excerpts from the poetry but not a lot, and very little analysis. Probably the best thing about the book is the balanced attitude Mr. Meyers takes towards the poet. The author doesn't gloss over Frost's faults, but doesn't demonize him either. Yes, Frost had a tremendous ego. (Show me an artistic person that doesn't!) He loved to receive praise. He "collected" honorary degrees. Towards the end of his life he made it clear that he wanted degrees from Oxford and Cambridge, so that he could equal the achievement of Longfellow and James Russell Lowell. He was famous enough and knew enough of the "right" people that he was able to get what he wanted. He was extremely competitive and made nasty comments about other poets who he perceived to be a "threat", both in terms of popularity and talent- such as Carl Sandburg, Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot. Frost made fun of Sandburg's self-created "folksy" persona- playing his "geetar" and combing his long, white hair over his eyes. But Mr. Meyers makes clear that Frost wasn't alone in his competitiveness. Though Sandburg was apparently a very nice fellow, Eliot and Pound had plenty of nasty things to say about Frost and other poets as well. Where Mr. Meyers is most sympathetic is in discussing Frost's relationship with his family. In the past, Frost has been portrayed as a selfish "monster" who ignored his wife and children and caused their unhappiness, mental problems and, in the case of Frost's son Carol, a suicide. It seems clear that mental illness ran in Frost's family, going back at least to his father and mother. Frost heard "voices" in his youth and they came back in times of severe stress, such as right after Frost's wife Elinor died in 1938. Frost had an unnatural fear of the dark and apparently suffered from some degree of depression. He managed to overcome these problems and to live a long, creative life. He did the best he could to be a good husband and father. He remained faithful to his wife despite the temptation of female students "throwing" themselves at him. (After all, even in middle-age, he was a handsome man, as well as being charismatic, artistic and famous.) He tried to be emotionally present for his children, giving advice (if also at times trying to control them) and he was always generous with money. Again, this book is strong on Frost's personal life. But it is a bit weak on analyzing the poetry and it covers Frost's teaching career in too cursory a manner, "flitting" about from place to place too quickly. Some of this is inherent in Mr. Meyers' decision to write a relatively brief biography. He tries to cover in 350 pages the personal life and career of a man who lived to be 88 years old, and who remained creative for approximately 70 of those years. Mr. Meyers had to make choices about what to include and what to leave out and other things had to be compressed. Unfortunately, it shows. This book is not the definitive biography of Frost. That remains to be written. But it is a good introduction, a book that succeeds in being fair-minded and will leave you wanting to know more about the man and the poetry.

All Kinds Of Grief Shall Arrive

Jeffrey Meyers' 'Robert Frost: A Biography' is a thorough, if disjointed, episodic, and often uncomfortably apologetic account of the poet's tumultuous and psychically violent life.

While the broad American public continues to lionize Frost and his collected verse, Meyers' volume reveals that there was little to admire in the individual man (a list of character traits in the index includes, among others, "accident-prone," "competitive," "domineering," "egotistic," "fears insanity," "hears voices," "hypersensitive," "insecure," "jealous," "puritanical," "restless," "self-promoting," "temperamental," "tendency to gossip," "uses illness to escape responsibility," and "vanity.") At one extreme, neurotic personalities take their illnesses out on themselves; the aggressively competitive Frost fell into the opposite camp, so that it was his family and intimate friends who suffered primarily, and often fatally, from the grossly irresponsible attitude he adopted towards his own pathology.

Both of Frost's parents, as well as his only sibling, were physically and mentally unstable: "bad blood" clearly ran freely in the family's veins. Emotionally smothered by and dependent upon his "terribly queer" mother, the young Frost was equally at the mercy of his alcoholic, brutal, and vindictive father. Both parents died relatively young after lives of dissolution and extreme hardship.

The circumstances of Frost's youth set the course for his adult existence: year after year, decade after long decade, the poet replicated his fundamental "family romance" and thus found himself surrounded by, and indeed, further afflicting, a variety of tragically disturbed people and families.

Generational patterns of mental instability and violent "accidents" were the norm, not the exception, in the lives of the people Frost embraced. Amazingly, the fatalistic and cowardly Frost never became fully conscious of the destructive role he played in the lives of those closest to him. Nor did he learn how to master himself or take healthy control over the calamitous events of his personal life.

Tellingly, the poet openly mocked anyone who sought out professional psychological help, which he strenuously avoided receiving himself.

No single event illustrates Frost's grandiose immaturity and reckless disregard for the lives and emotional health of his family more blatantly than the episode in which Frost woke his six year old daughter Lesley in the middle of night, escorted her downstairs where his sobbing wife was waiting, and, pointing a gun at himself and then at his spouse, told her, "Take your choice. Before morning, one of us will be dead!"

Perhaps understandably, three decades later, Frost's only son, Carol, 38, committed suicide in front of his own small son under identical circumstances.

Frost's children were raised in isolation on various New England farms and schooled at home; they grew up in a constricted environment dominated by their severe, tyrannical father and exhausted, physically stricken, and ineffectual mother.

With the exception of Lesley, Meyers fails to communicate the children's side of their stories to the reader. The author's intermittent presentation of Frost as a loving father who spent much of his free time nurturing his children falls flat.

Frost survived into his 89th year as a wealthy, respected, and world-renowned poet who lunched with American presidents and honored foreign dignitaries, including Nikita Khrushchev, with his presence.

It is more than interesting to note that, like an engine of destruction in the mythological guise of a respectable patriarch, Frost's health grew more robust as he aged and as his wife, Elinor ("rather silent, sad and dour" even before her marriage to Frost), and family withered, became severely mentally ill (both Carol and daughter Irma suffered some kind of psychosis; in her 45th year, Irma was committed "as a hopeless case to a hospital for the insane," as was Frost's sister, Jeanie), or otherwise died young (favorite daughter Marjorie at 29).

Only Lesley, who Meyers unaccountably refers to as a "harsh and sinewy old harridan" in later life, survived him.

Meyers provides a detailed account of Frost's friendships with other famous poets, including Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, Edward Thomas, William Butler Yeats, Carl Sandburg, and Robert Lowell.

His analysis of Frost's work is sound if not always persuasive; his evaluation of the influence of Thomas Hardy's poetry on Frost's feels particularly strained.

Meyers' discussion of Frost's classic "The Road Not Taken" in conjunction with one of the poet's letters includes this incomprehensible sentence: "The words "lonely cross-roads," "converged" and neither "much traveled" in the letter become "Two roads diverged" and "less traveled by" at the beginning and end of the poem, and the inevitability of "converged" turns into the perplexity of "diverged."

Meyers also makes a blatant error when attributing an Irish peasant's narrative about capturing and living for several weeks with a fairy, which appears in Lady Gregory's 'Visions & Beliefs in the West of Ireland' (1920), to Yeats himself. Yeats accompanied and assisted Lady Gregory in her field work for the book, but the narrative in question was clearly not his own, as any reader Gregory's book, which is still in print, can see (the memorate is attributed to "an old man, Kelleher," and his wife).

Whether Meyers is repeating a mistake that Frost made concerning the subject, or is making the mistake himself, is impossible to discern from the text, as no source is provided. Considering the extraordinary nature of the claim, Meyers' inaccuracy is difficult to overlook.

Meyers also adopts Frost's biased image of competitor Carl Sandburg, who appears throughout the book as manipulative pseudo-bumpkin perpetually strumming his "geetar" for a gullible public.

Frost placed his poetical ambition and personal fame ahead of everything else in his life, a situation for which his family and loved ones paid dearly, and for which Elinor never forgave him.

Ultimately, Meyers' biography is a casebook example of how the human suffering of others can be the price paid for respectability as well as for great art.

Robert Frost and the Barrier of Silence

In spite of the barrier of silence choking it, the vitality of American identity and consciousness continues to survive, thanks to clues, planted in Robert Frost: a biography, written by Jeffrey Meyers. The first major hint that America is alive and struggling for breath comes with the affirmation of the importance of Frost's identity as a native San Franciscan; the second is the remembrance of Lionel Trilling's valiant attempt in 1985 to put into sharper focus the image of Frost's work and his reputation. Nevertheless, author Meyers does not develop the latter point in which Trilling stated that Frost's reputation had been created over a misinterpretation of his work. In fact Trilling's was a major effort to raze the barrier of silence, to state and restate lines of research in the development and study of literature in America from the East Coast to the West, from Columbia University to the University of California at Berkeley (Lizarraga 1999a y b). In response to criticism both professional and personal, published in major literary reviews of the East Coast, Trilling made a valiant attempt to defend the remarks made on that historical evening, recording in permanent form by way of the Partisan Review both his speech and his will to defend it. Although Meyers describes the reaction of Frost on that evening as one of surprise, the poet was not a stranger to the effects of the barrier of silence. A letter written in 1929 by Frost to Lincoln MacVeagh (Thompson 1964:362), as well as subsequent events in the 1930's, not only establish Frost's initial attitude toward 'the silencers', but also serves as a vindication of Trilling. The letter reads as follows "The first poem I ever wrote (La Noche Triste) was on the Maya-Toltec-Aztec civilization and there is where my heart still is, while outwardly i profess an interest more or less perfunctory in new England. Never mind, I'm lucky to be allowed to write poetry on anything at all". Actually, this was but a prelude to continuing manifestations of the relation of poetry, politics, religion and repression, experienced in 1936, when Frost achieved the publication of a number of works. Key among them is the booklet titled A Further Range, which includes the poems "The Vindictives 'The Andes"and "The Bearer of Evil Tidings 'The Himalayas"and for which he won the Pulitzer Prize, and the booklet entitled from Snow to Snow, which, apparently, was the initial publication of the poem "The Road Not Taken"and which by the end of the Thirties as an integral text had been banished to oblivion by Frost himself. It is here that a concept of AngloAmerican literature, which rejects the primacy of geography in the formation of consciousness, begins to be formulated; and, time is divorced from space. This then created a dichotomy in the Americas, centering in the north of america concepts of Angloamerican and Western culture, grounded in language only, as opposed to South and/or Latin American literature in which geographical space and language serve as the cornerstones (Falcon, Huayanca, Lizarraga 1999). If we are to formulate a viable concept of an integrated American culture and education, today we must face this contradiction , a continuing source of repression and chaos. Focusing on this point, the alert reader becomes aware that the true measure of Robert Frost is to be taken by how he dealt with "the silencers" and the consequences this has had, not only on his own life, but also the lives of the rest of us, and not by the shadow of Kay Morrison and her unconventional love life of which Frost was but a part. Channeling a force with the strength to do this is not only to "keep at bey the silencers' but also to demolish the barrier of silence, itself, and"breathe free".

The Revolution Examined and Interpreted

Books in the "Major Problems in American History" series are designed as college textbooks, but also offer much to the general reader who wishes to understand more thoroughly a given time period in American history.

This entry on the American Revolution is no exception. The original source documents and essays in the book examine the meaning of the Revolution and how truly radical the Revolution was, in that all men were not considered as being created equal prior to the eighteenth century.

Fans of military history may be disappointed, as there is only one chapter on the Revolutionary War. The book concentrates instead on social, cultural, and economic trends that led to our separation from Britain, and also takes a look at how the Revolution changed gender and racial relations. Political theory is also heavily covered, as the book plumbs the failure of the Articles of Confederation and the adoption of the Constitution and Bill of Rights.

Those who wish to delve deeply into the story of our nation's founding would be rewarded by reading the material in this book.

Excellent book for use in an American Revolution course

I like the idea behind the Major Problems in American History series of books. Each book deals with a specific event or period. The books contain essays by historians that often present opposing views or conflicting interpretations and many primary sources from the period the book is centered upon. The result is definitely not a one-sided view of the historical period. In fact, the way the information is presented allows for students to explore the period through multiple lenses of historical inquiry so they can begin to develop their own interpretation. Students will often present differing opinions when asked open ended questions and it makes for some very good discussion.

The topic of this book is the American Revolution. As many readers know, the meaning of the Revolution, the actual history of the event, and how we remember it has been debated ever since it ended. Since the event is pivotal to the creation of the United States, politicians have always tried to portray themselves as carrying out the wishes of the Founders. This has resulted in many differing interpretations of the Revolution over the years. Quite often, historians can easily point out using the same primary sources here in this book where political claims are far off the mark.

At the same time, the way we remember the Revolution is often at odds with what actually took place. This is true of most historical events. The documents here in this book are just the tip of the iceberg. There are a plethora of documents out there from the Revolution, but there is no way to collect all of them into one book. It would be a problem of overloading the interpretative capacity of a student to include too many. These that have been selected go a long way in covering a large swath of the historical territory of the period.

I enjoyed working with this book when I used it in an undergraduate course on the Revolution. It was one of my earliest upper level courses in history and it really opened my eyes up to the world of primary sources. I still go back to this book for its primary sources now that I teach survey courses for a community college. I also use the essays in class to demonstrate to students how historians differ on their views of the past. The reception of this content by students is wonderful. They often comment on how this makes history a much more interesting subject to study.

If I were to teach a course on the American Revolution I would definitely consider using this book in the class. Okay, not the second edition, but the newer, updated third edition. I like the presentation of the essays and primary sources which are critical to the development of historical interpretation by students. It is also a nice, convenient collection of documents which is often one of the bigger issues with teaching courses. I run into this problem all the time with developing survey courses. So if you are looking for a book for students that has primary sources, historical essays by historians, and is affordable, this is it.

Good source selection, but horribly and unforgivably flawed

I had this book inflicted on me as required reading for a college class on the American Revolution. Having had to read it, I would not recommend it to anyone who is looking to further their understanding of the American Revolution-- there have to be better reference books and collections of primary source material out there.

First: there are a *few* good points. Professor Brown seems to have made a selection of roughly 6 primary source documents for each of his 13 chapters, and while I'm sure you can find them elsewhere, it may be nice for some people to have them collected in one book. He has also selected 2 essays by other historians for each chapter, plus 3 essays for the introduction and 3 more for the conclusion. The essays are written by reputable historians, and from what can still be discerned from the original historian's arguments, these historians seem to be capable writers who can evaluate the evidence and construct good arguments. Each of these essays, if included in its entirety, would have been an excellent choice for students in an American history class concentrating on the Revolution. If Professor Brown had deigned to leave the essays and primary source documents intact, this would be an excellent book.

Which leads me to the problem with Professor Brown's work, and why I've given this book a '1 star' rating. Professor Brown has an excessively heavy hand at editing the works of other historians, and he has horribly butchered, mutilated, and destroyed every historian's essay he has included in this book. Over and over again, when reading essays in this book, one trips over those little ellipses (that's the three little periods, like '...', that indicate where an editor has removed material from the original work-- to clarify for those who didn't already know that). Sometimes it's hard to tell whether Brown merely cut out a few words, or cut out sentences, or cut out several paragraphs, or even removed a few pages. What is clear is that the original historian's thoughts usually take a jarring, disjointed turn from one side of the ellipses to the other, indicating that Brown has cut out much of the original author's discussion, intent, evidence and conclusions, and then usually tried to jam what remains of entirely separated portions of the essay back into some sort of connection. Brown does this extremely poorly. He has murdered the arguments in each of these essays, then stitched them back together and reanimated them as some sort of being (like Frankenstein's monster) whose argument has been remade in the image that Brown wants it to have, but that no longer clearly communicates the original author's thought. Countless times as I read through this book, I had to consider just what it was that Brown left out, and what the original author's real thrust to their argument might have been before Brown destroyed it.

In one case, I was able to compare the original essay by one of the authors with what was left in Brown's extremely over-edited work, and I found that Brown had chopped the essay in half and taken out much of the original argument's force and impact. His version had caused readers to be left with a significantly different, overly simplified impression of the issues in question, and also would lead the student to believe that the issues discussed were both much more clear-cut with a unified view of them by all the colonists, and much less important in determining the colonist's path to resistance. When Brown's destruction of one essay was so thorough, and the remaining pieces of others makes it clear that he did that sort of work to every essay in this book, I cannot trust the conclusions I was doubtless (as a student) supposed to be drawing from any of the parts of Brown's hack-job. The essay I was able to compare with the original writing was Pauline Maier's "The Townshend Acts and the Consolidation of Colonial Resistance". The original is chapter 5 of Pauline Maier's own book, 'From Resistance to Revolution' (had to read it for the same class-- Professor Maier's book is a much better example of historical writing than anything I've seen from Professor Brown).

As an academic source, this book ought to be considered worthless. One cannot, in good conscience, quote anything from this book: it would be the same as, in history or any other field, taking someone's quote out of context and seeking to make it support something that it probably doesn't. I am highly unlikely, after seeing Brown's sense of respect for other historical thinkers (he apparently has none) and his sense of restraint in preserving knowledge (he would apparently rather destroy anything that doesn't fit his preconceived goals for his book), to buy and read any book by Richard D. Brown voluntarily. If this book is a clear example of the rest of the work Richard D. Brown has done as an academic writer and professor of history, he ought to be figuratively burned at the academic stake (maybe even literally burned in effigy) and never be taken seriously as a historian again.

It's never too early to get your babies chewing on books and ruminating on the alphabet, and children of all ages enjoy the company of H.A. Rey's intrepid monkey, Curious George. In this board book, the letter itself mimics the shape of the animal or object in question. The A is actually the gaping jaw of the alligator, the B is the head and body of the big blue bird, and so on. In most of the pictures--not-so-curiously, 26 in all--youngsters will delight in finding a tiny Curious George, just about to get into mischief, no doubt. Adult Curious George fans will get a kick out of sharing their long-time monkey friend with their favorite little chimps, and preschoolers will enjoy the comical illustrations that offer just the right amount of detail to keep things interesting. About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Great book for learning

Curious George makes it fun to learn your ABCs. At the day care where I work, we use it quite a bit for teaching the children their alphabet. I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to teach a child.

Educational fun with George

In "Curious George's ABCs," one of the most famous characters from children's literature guides the reader through the alphabet. Each entry is illustrated by a noun that begins with that letter. To reinforce the alphabet, each letter is actually incorporated into the illustration. For example, the alligator's mouth opens in an angle that physically encloses the letter "A".
Curious George, the loveable monkey of the title, shows up as an observer or participant in most of the entries. As illustrated by H.A. Rey, George is as appealing as ever. I especially liked the illustration of George, bundled up in a snowsuit, looking at an "icy icicle." This is a good book for children learning the alphabet.

Why not just get the original?

H. A. Rey, Curious George's ABCs (Houghton Mifflin, 1998)

Purists beware: Curious George's ABCs, the Houghton Mifflin board book, is "based on" Rey's 1963 book Curious George Learns the Alphabet. Most of the text has been removed, as well as all of the lowercase letters. Still, as an early primer on letters, it's useful enough, and the capital-letter illustrations are the originals, so you still get some--just not all--of that Rey magic. ** ½
