Ancestors: A Beginner's Guide to Family History and Genealogy, by Jane Wilson, Terry Willard

Genealogy is the second-fastest growing hobby in America, but many would-be family historians are daunted by the sheer volume of information they must sift through and techniques they need to master in order to find their own past. Jim and Terry Willard have compiled an invaluable volume that makes researching one's own family lineage both accessible and fun. Based on the 10-part PBS series by the same name, Ancestors covers all the bases including creating a pedigree chart or family tree, finding and interpreting documents, and searching for your roots online. Jim and Terry Willard explain each technique with the assistance of ten expert genealogists. The book includes additional information not discussed in the series that will make it an invaluable companion for all would-be family historians.

From Library Journal
This work is the companion book to the television series of the same name that aired on PBS affiliates in January and February 1997. Alex Haley, who was actively involved in producing the Ancestors series before his untimely death, summed up the heart of the project and shed light on the passion for genealogy: "In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage....Without this enriching knowledge there is a hollow yearning." The book's ten chapters match the ten-part TV series and illustrate methods for getting started; the final appendix offers a resource directory. A reading list, a pedigree chart, a family group record, a research log, and advice on where to write for vital records conclude this richly illustrated introductory book. A good beginning handbook for genealogists, this is essential for major genealogy collections. Be advised, however, that it joins a long line of outstanding works for beginners that can be found by consulting the subject heading "Genealogy-handbooks."?Judith P. Reid, Library of Congress

Great for beginners but...
By sjmchugh@vaxxine.com
even though it is a wonderful resource for helping to teach genealogy it is not for the Non-American.
This is a book that lists page after page of addresses for each state of places to write to which is great for anyone researching in the States but really doesn't help those of us who have no American ancestors.
I did , however, find the medical pedigree section extremely interesting.

Australia has been invaded. Nothing is as it was. Six teenagers are living out their nightmare in the sanctuary of a hidden valley called Hell. Alone, they make their own rules, protect what is theirs, and struggle for courage and hope in a world changed forever. Seeking supplies, allies, and information, the friends make forays into enemy territory, drawing on nerve and resourcefulness they never even knew they had. As the risks become greater, so too do the sacrifices they must make. Intense, passionate, and compulsive, The Dead of Night continues the frighteningly real story begun in Tomorrow, When the War Began.

In this sequel to Tomorrow, When the War Began, the teenagers continue their guerrilla warfare against the invading foreign army. PW said, "Though it's still a superior adventure tale, it lacks the provocative edge and hard-hitting moral challenges of the author's best work." Ages 12-up. (May) r

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-10. Marsden picks up right where Tomorrow, When the War Began (Houghton, 1995) left off. A few months have passed since Ellie and six of her friends returned from a camping trip deep in the Australian outback to find their country invaded by an unidentified, non-English-speaking nation. The Dead of Night opens with a brief recounting of what happened in the previous novel; two members of the group, Corrie and Kevin, are still missing. Homer, a self-appointed leader, rallies the others together to track them down. They discover that Kevin has been imprisoned, and Corrie is alive, but in a coma. The teens continue their guerrilla activities and, by the end of the story, have lost Chris, another comrade. As in Tomorrow, Ellie narrates and keeps a written record of the group's activities and experiences. She is a fully realized character who grows considerably in the story. She is a thoughtful, realistic protagonist who wrestles not only with the brutalities of war, but also with her own adolescence. Her feelings for Lee are particularly well done. She wants to have sex with him, but worries about the complications that could result. These realistically depicted human conflicts make the book much more than just an exciting apocalyptic adventure. In the end, only four members of the original seven remain, but they are still committed to fighting the enemy. Hope is alive. Although this sequel can stand on its own, readers of Tomorrow will find it far more satisfying.?Edward Sullivan, New York Public Library

good plot and action continues, WARNING to preteen parents
By A Customer
I am feeling rather prudish writing these reviews, but I do feel it is appropriate to make sure parents know what is in their children's books. My 13 year old daughter and I both read and enjoyed the first book in the series. I have now just finished reading the second and know she will enjoy it, but will find the sexual content a bit uncomfortable. I will let her read it, but plan on discussing it with her. I would definitely not put this book in the hands of anyone younger. The violence may also be disturbing. I would highly recommend another book out of Australia that we both enjoyed: "Looking for Alibrandi" by Melina Marchetta. Check this one out, good romance, good plot, good decisions. Enjoy.

Greatest war story/coming of age tail ever told
By Storms EniGma
I was first introduced to this serioes at school, we were assigned to read it for English, before this book all books assigned to us in school were all garbage and I expected the same, as did most the other students in my class, most wouldnt bother to read it, so the teacher read it aloud in class, for most of it upuntil the half way mark I ignored most of it, until it dawned on me that this book was actualy sounding o.k. When I got home i got my copy from the bookshelf and actualy started to read it, and I read at any chance I had, and when I finished I read the second and third and then had to wait while the rest were written and released
The amazing story starts off with a group of teenagers going camping, and when they return the find the Australia has been taken over by another country, they go to the bush again to hide, but can't just sit back and do nothing and decide to fight back in what ever way they can, although unconventional, when all is said and done and the series is over they made a huge impact on the war, sometimes planned, sometimes fluked, of coarse not all survive and with every loss you can not help but feel the emotional pain of the others, it is the best comming of age story I have read, and although it is listed as a young adult series, it will be unforgetable to all ages and you will develop a bond with Ellie, Homer, Kevin and the rest of the gang, I have never fell in love with any fictional charactors the way I did with these guys, not even in T.V series
A story like this comes along once in a life time, do not, and I mean do not missss this book

Not a Text for Learning to Identify Weather by Simple Observation
By Kindle Customer
I was hoping this book would aid me in gaining a general idea of the weather to be expected by simply observing the sky and nature - it does not. There is plenty of useful information in this little book (which is mostly photos and diagrams), but if you are an outdoorsman or outdoorswoman looking for a few "tips" or bits of weather folklore to use on a day-to-day basis, then this is definitely not the book for you.

If you want to learn to identify clouds, understand basic weather, and answer some nonpractical (to the everyday guy/gal) questions you've had about weather and the atmosphere, then get this book. Otherwise, I would recommend you pass this text by and find another, or at least look at this text only as supplemental material to what you are actually looking for.

Again, this text is not bad, but it is not what I was looking for and the description had me thinking it might hold those qualities, but it does not. On the plus side, you can read all 124 pages (cover to cover, minus index) in less than an hour and you'll have some decent pictures to help you identify clouds.

From Publishers Weekly
"Sometimes people have to die," Margaret's brother tells her, "so that the rest can live." A young German-American, Margaret supports the rebel cause in the American Revolutionary War but hates to see her brothers leave home. Eventually she falls in love with a prisoner quartered with her family, Christian, a German soldier hired by the British. While re-creating the battles at Trenton, Chadd's Ford and Stony Point from Christian's viewpoint (and reflecting on his loyalties), the authors show the effects of the war on Margaret's close-knit family. This is an absorbing historical romance, but though the characters and their times have color and life, the story is occasionally marred by inflated writing (her "lament resonated through the anguished days") and too-neat coincidences. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 6-8 This historical novel has an interesting and original setting, together with sound historical underpinningsfeatures that almost, but not quite, make up for the routine style in which it is written. Margaret Volpert, whose Pennsylvania family is firmly in the rebel camp during the American Revolution, and Christian Molitor, newly arrived from Germany as part of the Hessian mercenary troops, meet when Christian, wounded and taken prisoner, is paroled into the custody of Margaret's father. He becomes friendly with Margaret's brother John, who has been seriously wounded in the same battle as Christianby Christian, a fact which haunts the Hessian more and more as his feelings for the family, especially Margaret, increase. Near the end of the story, Margaret and Christian warn the rebel forces of a Loyalist plot to defeat them in the coming battle at Stony Point. At the close, Margaret's painful waiting, a continuing theme in the story, goes onthis time for Christian, whom she hopes will survive the war to marry her. As the story rushes to the final events, it becomes more involving, but never quite rises above its authors' inability to provide readers with more than mundane interest in the characters. While a new historical novel for children is always welcome, especially one as well researched as this, it lacks sharp, well-developed characterizations and a vivid prose style. Christine Behrmann, New York Public Lib .

A very good read
By hortus
Based on historical fact the author spun a good story. This is not a retelling of a true story but a story that was built on real pieces of historical fact which occurred during the Revolution. A very good read.

one of my favorite books ever............
By A Customer
I personally loved this book.I read it at 12 and definitly consider it one of my favorite books. not only does it have a lot to offer historically wise, but it also has a ton of drama and interesting parts to it. it has a bit of romance in the middle , but only a bit. When margrets brother goes to war she's worried. Then she visits a small temperary hospital and sees all the suffering and convinces her dad to bring a soldier to help her father and her. Little does she know that this certain soldier is from the other side of the war and is the same soldier who shot her beloved brother. overcome by emotions he cant handle the young soldier runs away. i wont tell you any more because it would ruin the ending , but take my word it is a great book. Too bad they didn't write a sequel to it.

An enemy Among Them
By A Customer
This was an interesting, good book. It's a little boring in the beginning, between pgs 1-10, but you get hooked after that. It's about mainly Margaret Volpert, and another main character is Private Christian Molitor, a Hessian. Margaret's family has a son, later 2, in the American army though they are German. When Margaret meets Christian, she sees how both sides' boys are the same, neither are evil. They're just fighting for their country, doing what they're told, what they believe in. But Christian has a secret that could turn Margaret against him...

Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self-Discovery, by Don Richard Riso, Russ Hudson

" The Enneagram is an extraordinary framework for understanding more about ourselves. No matter from which point of view we approach it, we discover fresh conjunctions of new and old ideas." So writes Don Riso in this expanded edition of his classic interpretation of the Enneagram, the ancient psychological system used to understand the human personality. In addition to updating the descriptions of the nine personality types, Personality Types, Revised greatly expands the accompanying guidelines and, for the first time, uncovers the Core Dynamics, or Levels of Development, within each type. This skeletal system provides far more information about the inner tension and movements of the nine personalities than has previously been published. This increased specificity will allow therapists, social workers, personnel managers, students of the Enneagram, and general readers alike to use it with much greater precision as they unlock the secrets of self-understanding, and thus self-transformation.

Good, but use it wisely
By Ilana Teitelbaum
The main purpose of this book is to type yourself in order that you should know how to become a fully integrated individual. Understanding of the self is one step to self-discovery, but the next step, as the book illustrates, is to move toward one's 'point of integration', to attain one's full potential. To that end 'Character Types' has been heaven-sent for me. It becomes painfully clear that left to ourselves, we attempt to improve in the way which is exactly the opposite of what we really need. As a Four, I was constantly introspecting and obsessing, certain that if I did so long enough I would understand everything. Not until I read this book did I understand that the only way to improve would be to fight my natural tendencies, to become more open to experiencing and to take things easier. This insight, though it sounds small, leaves me indebted to Don Riso for writing a book which was as effective as any 12-step program, and which will be applicable for the rest of my life in setting goals to strive towards.
On the other hand, this book should come with some disclaimers. The first is that this book should not be used in rigidly 'typing' other individuals besides yourself. The fact is, no one can ever presume to know what goes on inside another human being, and that natural barrier should be respected. Even if someone exhibits all the signs of a certain type, they should still be respected as the complex people they are, instead of being consigned to a filing cabinet. For people to start saying, "Oh, he's such a typical Five, always reading" is ridiculous, even degrading. For a basic understanding of the many facets of human nature, reading about the other types is fascinating--but that's as far as these descriptions should be taken to apply to real-life individuals and relationships.
Also, people should take the type descriptions with a grain of salt. The book is sometimes too specific--these types should be used to describe general tendencies, not specific details within the personality. Just because I am a certain type, that does not mean I cannot be radically different from others who share my type. The world is a wonderfully complex place, and people are the most complex things in it. Sharing some similarities *does not* make us the same.
The parental orientations, while interesting to read and perhaps even relevant sometimes, are the equivalent to psychobabble on some level and should also be taken with a grain of salt. The typing of celebrities is completely irrelevant, for reasons already expressed above.
Taken all in all, 'Character Types' is a valuable tool toward attaining self-discovery and understanding the means to attain one's full potential. The levels of development are charted at length, and the points of integration and disintegration highlight the manner in which people deteriorate, or more positively, the way they achieve health and integration. It also provides insight into people other than yourself, making it possible to appreciate the differences in each human being. For a book on the Enneagram, look no further than this.

The Best Book on the Enneagram
By A Customer
Out of the dozen or so books I've read about the enneagram, this one is the best. Riso divides each of the 9 personality types into 9 levels, giving us 81 different readings. The readings are in depth and on target. The levels bleed into each other, so you may find that you identify with levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 of your type, for example. Riso also does an excellent job of describing the two wings to every personality type, so if you know your type you will probably be able to recognize your wing easily. I'm sure there are other possible systems of differentiating people from each other by type, besides this and Myers-Briggs, that haven't yet been discovered, but Riso's enneagram should be more widely known than it is. Educated people should know their type. Some people make the argument that individuals are all unique, that there are no types, but this attitude basically tells us not to try to understand human nature because it's too complicated. This excellent book gives us a good system to understand people.

No other Type book has toped this and I've read dozens!
By J.M. Leonard
I bought the first edition of this book back in '88 and thought it was a masterpiece. The expanded edition is even better. Simply put, I have not come across a personality discription book that comes anywhere this close to accuracy and honesty. It can be difficult to read. If you give "Personailty Types" a fair chance, it will anger, depress or even horrify you. You will feel like the authors are ilicitly peaking into your soul. With truth can come serious pain. On the other side, no other book I've read also shows you the best qualities each personality holds better than this. "Personality Types" gives INDIRECT adivise on how to improve. It's not a follow-this-formula-that's-supposed-to-fit-all mentality. It's paradoxally simple and complex, easy to read and challangeing. I can't say I know if I actually believe in the Enneagram itself, or simply Riso and Hudson's interpertation of the Enneagram, all I know is I have had some version of this book for tweleve plus years( Over a third of my lifespan ) because I can see the people in my life and the corrolations to the descriptions in the book. Forget Myers-Briggs. astrology and the like...THIS is a masterpiece. Buy it and give it a chance, I can't recommend it more highly. But be warned. As I said, If one wants to grow, there are growing pains.

This math book.

It is really horrible. Almost everyday in my math class me or my class finds something mathmatically wrong. Definitions are very very unclear. For Example It says the beging point for a ray is an endpoint. That can be confusing to someone unfamilar to rays.

An American Requiem: God, My Father, and the War That Came Between Us, by James Carroll

An American Requiem is the story of one man's coming of age. But more than that, it is a coming to terms with the conflicts that disrupted many families, inflicting personal wounds that were also social, political, and religious. Carroll grew up in a Catholic family that seemed blessed. His father had abandoned his own dream of becoming a priest to rise through the ranks of Hoover's FBI and then become one of the most powerful men in the Pentagon, the founder of the Defense Intelligence Agency. Young Jim lived the privileged life of a general's son, dating the daughter of a vice president and meeting the pope, all in the shadow of nuclear war, waiting for the red telephone to ring in his parents' house. He worshiped his father until Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights movement, turmoil in the Catholic Church, and then Vietnam combined to outweigh the bond between father and son. These were issues on which they would never agree. Only after Carroll left the priesthood to become a writer and husband with children of his own did he come to understand fully the struggles his father had faced. In this work of nonfiction, the best-selling novelist draws on the skills he honed with nine much-admired novels to tell the story he was, literally, born to tell. An American Requiem is a benediction on his father's life, his family's struggles, and the legacies of an entire generation.

Amazon.com Review
If the Civil War pitted brother against brother, the Vietnam War is best understood as pitting father against son. Some of Vietnam's longest lasting battles were fought in heavy rages and even heavier silences across the dinner table. James Carroll is a veteran of many such skirmishes. A novelist now, this book is his story of what it was like to be an anti-war priest in the '60s while his father was an Air Force general deeply involved in Pentagon planning. What makes the book particularly moving is that Carroll comes to realize that his father is no mono-dimensional saber-rattler (indeed, he suspects that his father's military career came to its sudden end because of the stances he took inside the corridors of power against expanding and intensifying the war). But the terrible truth was that neither the father nor the son ever managed to transcend the boundaries of their particular roles to meet each other in a candid, reciprocal relationship. And Carroll is honest--he tells us this, painfully. A very fine book, which along the way reports interestingly on some nearly forgotten '60s episodes.

From Publishers Weekly
Carroll, a novelist (Family Trade), poet and former priest, has written a moving memoir of the effect of the Vietnam War on his family that is at once personal and the story of a generation. His father was an Air Force general who won his stars by being one of the bright lights of the FBI-and a favorite of J. Edgar Hoover-rather than by working his way up through the military. One of Carroll's four brothers dodged the draft in Canada, another was an FBI agent ferreting out draft dodgers and he himself-a former ROTC Cadet of the Year at Georgetown-became an "antiwar" chaplain at Boston University who demonstrated in the streets but ducked the cameras for fear his father might recognize him. Carroll was earmarked from birth to be a priest (his father had trained for the priesthood but dropped out just before ordination) and received personal encouragement from Pope John XXIII and Cardinal Spellman, a family friend. Carroll's heroes evolved from Elvis to Pope John to Martin Luther King, rebel theologian Hans Kung, poet Allen Tate (his mentor) and Eugene McCarthy-most of whom his father considered enemies. After much personal struggle, Carroll left the priesthood, married and became a father, but the break with his own father was never repaired. At once heartbreaking and heroic, this is autobiography at its best.

From Library Journal
Carroll, a novelist (City Below, LJ 4/15/94) and Boston Globe columnist, presents an absorbing account of his youth and early adulthood in a family dominated by a strong-willed father, a country embroiled in a war in Vietnam, and a Roman Catholic faith caught up in the stress of reinventing itself through the Vatican II reforms. The tense relationship between father and son sets the stage for young James's equally difficult attempts to define himself as an American and as a Catholic priest. Carroll's description of his conflicts over Vietnam with his father (an FBI agent who subsequently became the founder of the Defense Intelligence Agency) will stand as an accurate reflection of family turmoil for countless readers who grew to maturity in the 1960s. Carroll offers a fascinating perspective on generational differences and the enormous challenges each young person faces when choosing a world view at odds with that of his or her parents. An exceptionally well-written work that is effective on many levels; highly recommended for academic and public libraries.

A Readable History Lesson
By carolyn Keller
I am 3/4 of the way through this book and like it very much. I am learning not only about James Carroll, but about our country and the Catholic church. There is so much history here that I did not know or remember. A very readable book and so revealing about facts and personal struggles. Thank you.

One of the most important books I've read in recent years
By A Customer
Although I read An American Requiem three years ago, it continues to reverberate in my mind and I feel compelled to read it again. Carroll has analyzed his confusions of the war so well that he has helped me come to grips with my own ghosts from those years. His comparison of fatherly love and respect and that of repect and trust in government is so simple, yet profound. I thank him so much for helping me understand myself and my generation. I have recommended this book to many people and hope they have or will read it.

Beautifully written and with touching humility.
By Thistle Brown
I suppose this is a very sad book; and I often wanted to reach back and relieve Jim Carroll of his self-doubt and conflict, waive those growth experiences which most certainly made him into the person he is. What I'm saying is that I suffered right along with him and longed to put him at rest. He made me FEEL his pain. What he never managed to do and to which I have no objection, is to make me feel his father's pain. And, after all, American Requiem is Jim Carroll's story and NOT his father's. A lovely, lovely, book; and one I shall treasure.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1 --The creators of Sheep in a Jeep (1988) and Sheep on a Ship (1989, both Houghton) have produced yet another shear delight. Piggy bank in tow, the fleecy five take a country store by storm in search of a birthday gift for one of their friends. They hit upon just the thing, but find themselves a little short on cash. Luckily they're not short on ingenuity and make a real deal. The simple, yet thoroughly satisfying, story is suitable for young toddlers through emerging readers. The crisp, rhyming sentences that tell the tale with economy and humor are enormously enhanced by Apple's wonderfully detailed colored pencil drawings. There's nothing sheepish about these lambs; they're energetic, expressive, and completely disarming. A rambunctious romp; let's hope there are more in store.

Entertaining, though not as wonderful as "Sheep in a Jeep"
By A Customer
I absolutely adore Nancy Shaw's other boardbook "Sheep in a Jeep", and for months now my 10 month old has laughed aloud every time anyone says, "Beep! Beep! Sheep in a Jeep...", so I really looked forward to getting him "Ship in a Shop"... On the one hand, it's very cute, and the illustrations are utterly endearing with lots of color and detail, but on the other hand it lacks some of the rhythm and rhyme of Jeep which put it so high above the level of other boardbooks. It's cute and clever -- really an excellent book -- but Jeep had raised the bar so high, I suppose it was difficult to measure up.
But it's still a lovely little book, and certainly worth owning.

Wonderful!
By A Customer
My sister-in-law bought this book for my daughter because her sons liked it so much. My daughter loves it too. At age 22 months, this is her favourite bedtime book. She will hunt for it rather than have me read another book. She is beginning to like "Sheep go out to Eat" almost as much. (She calls it "Sheep Soup".) She does not seem terribly interested so far in "Sheep in a Jeep". She gets very excited every time we get to the bit where the stack of beach balls falls down, shouting "Uh oh!", and she understands that the story is about shopping for a birthday present because she will sing "Happy Birthday" if she is turning the pages on her own.
