Simple and Fantastic

As an African American learning lititure in high school I always lamented the chance to read a novel OTHER than a European classic. Upon confronting my teacher I was told that we would read Othello the following month. Since this terrible experience I have been in search of African and African American literature to quench that thirst that was so brutally dismissed in high school. By luck I eventually came across this book which I later found out is considered the most widely read book in African Literature. The novel is about the life of Okonkwo and the Igbo tribe. The novel is by most standards small (only a few hundred pages) and a very easy read. The language is simple and the characters and narrative is clear. All this being said this is one of the most powerful novels that I've had the recent delight of reading. It's the simplicity of it that drives the core ideals to your heart. You feel like a an explorer as you get an up close view of the social networks, religion and eventual imperialism that shapes the lives of these people. After reading this book I feel I took away a greater understanding of African culture as well as a truer love for its people.

Very Informative Book

I am enrolled in Pre-Colonial African History at UA Fort Smith, and my professor higly recommended this book for further study. I read it mostly for my research project about traditional Igbo society. I found the book to be very informative about traditional African culture. I could have done without the "other related readings" included with the book Things Fall Apart, but darn it all if I didn't learn something from those works as well, so it can't be too much of a complaint. I would highly recommend this book for any serious student of African culture. Whether your major is history, sociology, anthropology, or other related academic fields, books like this one can prove to be valuable educational resources.

A must have.

I am an African American and wanted some stories that my daughter could read beyond the Walt Disney princess tales... We read the stories in here together and the lessons and morals are engaging.
