Off the Road, by Nina Bawden

When Tom's grandfather goes off the road, Tom is sure Gandy has gone mad. Tom knows that beyond the wall lies the Outside, a wild place filled with barbarians and unimaginable dangers. He also knows that Oldies are weak-minded. So Tom summons all his courage and goes after Gandy, who obviously doesn't know what he's doing. Or does he? Tom's experience in the strange, messy, emotional world Outside, where so many things prohibited to Insiders are taken for granted, quickly shakes all his certainties. Who is crazy, the Oldies who are sent to the Memory Theme Park, or the families who let them go? Is the Wall meant to keep the Outsiders out, as Tom has always been told--or the Insiders in? Master storyteller Nina Bawden, known for stories in which secrets from the past emerge in the present, has created a spellbinding adventure set in a future society with secrets that make it a chilling mirror of our own.

From Publishers Weekly
A divided America in the year 2040 is the setting for this novel filled with "imaginative details," said PW. "For sci-fi buffs not yet ready to tackle Orwell's 1984, Bawden here introduces many of the same provocative issues for middle readers." Ages 10-14.

Grade 5-8-A novel set in Wales in 2036. Tom Jacobs, 11, and his family are celebrating his grandfather's birthday with an outing to the Memory Theme Park, that is, until Gandy goes AWOL. In this orderly, high-tech society, people reside in neat communities called Urbs, surrounded by fortifications to "hold back the Wild." Children are brought up to fear anything beyond their walls and with the belief that "by sixty-five most Oldies were brain-dead." What the boy doesn't know is that his grandfather is escaping his induction notice into the Nostalgia Block of the facility. Venturing Outside, Tom does not find dragons and trolls as he has been led to expect, but something akin to a time warp. He is introduced to Gandy's brother and his extended family, who are among the large numbers of people who live off the land without electricity or modern conveniences. Through the characters' experiences, readers become aware of the rules and rewards of both societies and must grapple with issues of individual rights and freedoms and the sacrifices that are required to insure security. There are, however, a few problems. In one week's time, Tom transforms from a self-important couch potato into a valued and valiant member of the farm community. While repression and rigidity are alluded to throughout, his decision to return to his parents and his vow to spread the truth seems foolhardy for someone his age. Also, the adults allowing his cousin to accompany him Inside for the summer further belies the danger. An interesting but not entirely successful trip back to the future.

Gr. 5^-9. A moving family story is nearly always at the heart of Bawden's fiction, whether she's writing about World War II at home in Britain or about a bullying older brother. This story is part science fiction, part fable. Brother is a rude word in the year 2036 when there are too many people, no one has brothers or sisters, and the old are gently and "permanently" taken care of. Tom, 11, follows his grandfather when "Gandy" escapes into the wild world Outside the Wall. Tom has always been taught that Outside is a savage jungle; instead, he discovers a postindustrial society of extended family, farming, hard work, and freedom. Gradually, he realizes that the totalitarian Inside world he grew up in is a comfortable prison that shut him in. After the initial escape, the interest is not in what happens next. Rather, the characters will make readers think about ideas: How much do we give up for technology, privacy, order? Are hard work, dirt, and danger always bad? Who should get the most respect, children or elders? Bawden dramatizes the issues through Tom's love for his grandfather and through the bonds Tom develops with his newly discovered extended family, especially his tender, physical, cuddling affection for his infant second cousin, who is like the little brother Tom has never had. Then suddenly plot matters: the great surprise ending shouts for a sequel. Give this to fans of Lowry's The Giver and other stories of dystopia, including those listed in the Read-alikes column on the opposite page. Hazel Rochman

The futuristic plot of this book made it a fun read.
By A Customer
The futuristic plot of this book made it difficult to understand at first (I had to read the first chapter twice). At the same time I wanted to keep reading to know more about the society in 2036. By using the idea of two totally different societies which do not interact with each other, the author paints a picture of a cold, harsh future. Tom, an eleven year old boy brought up on the Inside which is a society where children are dominant, people over 65 are "disposed of", and a family consists of a mother and father and only one child, follows his grandfather to the Outside. The Outside consisted of hard working families with lots of brothers and sisters and a society that was mannerly and respected the elders. By using these two contrasting societies, the author seems to be focusing on some of the weaknesses of our society today such as stereotyping the older generation as useless, households in which the children dominate, and the government. I found this book comparable to "The Giver", but intended for a younger audience. The surprise ending made the book a very worthwhile read.

The Inside or the Outside?
By imaloserdude
A wall separates those on the Inside from those on the Outside. Tom is eleven and a child born on the Inside. All of his life he's been taught to fear the Outside as a place with dangerous people, rejects of society, and criminals. He feels safe in a world in which each family has one child, only one, and to think otherwise is ridiculous. Children are coddled, catered to, the center of attention at every meal. They get the choicest meat and the most food. Their opinions, their thoughts, their happiness matter most to parents. But as Tom follows his grandfather, climbing under The Wall, he learns that much of what he'd been taught was wrong.

Bawden forces the reader to confront some of the modern issues and questions that plague us today in the twenty-first century. At what point is an aging person more of a drag on society or a family than a contributor? What responsibilities should children have in the running of a home? What ethics are we teaching our children when we tell them lies to get them to do something? Is compliance or self-assertion a vice or virtue in a child? Is it okay to know that others suffer while focus on our own happiness? To what degree is choice important in a family?

Read this book, for a surprise awaits the patient reader near the end as Tom discovers that...
