Kindergarten-Grade 4?When Peter Chang's parents send him to Chinatown for the summer to stay with his great aunt, he feels alienated and homesick?until he discovers a worn-out dragon, large enough for 10 men to carry, crammed in a shop window. His aunt reluctantly agrees to let him take it home, and he embarks on a summer-long quest to restore the wrecked bundle of silk and wood to its former glory. He involves many others in the project: the tailor, Great Aunt's mahjongg friends, the kitemaker, the herbalist, an artist, and, at last, the Buddhist priest, all of whom are touched by Peter's determination. Watercolor paintings, reminiscent of Ted Lewin's work, lovingly depict in glorious and enticing detail a close-knit Cantonese community in an unnamed big-city Chinatown. Expressions and gestures vividly convey each character's emotion as Peter wins the adults over to his cause. His anxiety and joy, along with the affection and excitement of his elders as the dragon comes to life, light up the book. The well-written text, as substantial as the artwork in specific and authentic detail, draws readers into Peter's new world. A welcome story about contemporary Chinese American life.?Margaret A. Chang, North Adams State College, MA

Ages 4^-8. Although this story features a little boy, its main character is really a Chinese American community. Peter is not happy about spending his summer in Chinatown with his great-aunt. But his feelings begin to change when he spots an old, 10-man dragon in a shop window. With the help of his great-aunt, he acquires the dragon and sets out to repair it. Friends and shopkeepers are enlisted in the task. Mr. Pong the tailor agrees to sew up holes in exchange for Peter running errands; Miss Chiao the kitemaker fixes the tail; and his great-aunt's mah-jongg group gilds the dragon's horns. In the course of making the dragon new again, Peter learns about the people and shops of Chinatown as well as the traditions of his culture. Nunes' text builds to a satisfying conclusion, although it makes an occasional abrupt shift along the way. The expansive watercolor illustrations are warm, colorful, and full of details unique to Chinatown. An endnote provides information on Chinese dragon lore. Leone McDermott

The Last Dragon was a very good book. It has very good illustrations also, and the story is very good itself. It describes the pictures very well, and the pictures are very realistic. I think that this would be a good book for children 6 and up. It also tells people the history of the Chinese New Year. Also what they do at this time of the year. This was a great book!!

The Low-Down Laundry Line Blues, by Cynthia Millen

When you're feeling down in the dumps, you just want to be left alone. But when you have a persistent little sister who is determined to get you up, hopping, and out of those low-down laundry line blues, there's no telling what can happen. Poet C. M. Millen's unusual picture book about moods and emotions is perfectly illustrated by Christine Davenier, who captures every nuance of the ups and downs of childhood in this dynamic and jazzy book.

From Publishers Weekly
Snazzy rhyming verse and breezy watercolor illustrations create a rollicking flirtation with the blues in this surefire cure for the doldrums. Determined to mope around ("I feel as down and as lonely/ as an empty laundry line"), an older sister resists her sibling's efforts to perk up the day. But, equally stubborn, the younger girl persists with her infectious invitations: "Be-bop a lollipop!/ Do you like to hop alot?" she asks, ignoring the negative retorts. In an inventive solution, the younger sibling transforms the image of despair?an empty laundry line?to one of delight with a game of jump rope and its requisite rhymes. Millen's (A Symphony for the Sheep) rhythm and blues-inflected verse is studded with images of gaiety (lollipops and hopscotch, sweet potatoes and jump rope). Davenier's (Very Best [Almost] Friends) buoyant illustrations almost as supple as the music of the blues greats. The watery tones of Davenier's palette, in predominant shades of red, brown and blue, and the older girl's slumped shoulders and downcast countenance expertly express her emotional state, while the exuberant poses of the younger girl might just get pouty youngsters off the couch to "Shake, shimmy, and roll!" Scenes of the pair cavorting accompanied by their pet dachshund or hightailing it down the front stoop are joyous, as are the endpaper drawings?laundry lines filled with colorful clothing. A fun and comforting lesson that moods come and go like the weather. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-In this swinging, rhythmic text, an older sister who is down in the dumps clings stubbornly to her blues until her little sister cajoles her into jumping rope. The rhyme and the fluid watercolor illustrations, executed with real verve, successfully capture the stances of the child who refuses to be jollied out of a bad mood and her vivacious sibling who is determined to help break it. Unfortunately, the metaphor of a drooping laundry line may not have meaning for today's audience. Although the children are contemporary in dress, some of the text ("...hello, operator!/My sister needs repair!") and the solution to the older girl's misery (jumping rope with a laundry line) seems quaintly anachronistic. Also, the text does not always scan properly when read aloud. Children may cheer the optimistic, bespectacled younger sister, but there isn't much story here to invite repeated readings. For a more successful recipe for beguiling a grumpy child, try William Steig's Pete's a Pizza (HarperCollins, 1998).

From Booklist
A little girl gazes out her window, and she's got the blues: "I feel as down and as lonely / as an empty laundry line." The girl's younger sister is anything but gloomy, and she sets about trying to cheer up her sibling: "Be-bop a lollipop! / Do you like to hop a lot? / Me bop a-hoppin' scotchin' / Hoppin' scotch with me?" The laundry line itself provides the cure for the blues when the sisters finally turn it into a jump rope. The jazzy text will be a joy for some children and a pain for others less familiar with the style. However, Davenier's illustrations will speak to everyone: she shows the older sister drooping with every atom of her being as the peppy younger sister exudes energy and happiness. Susan Dove Lempke

Everybody gets the blues
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book on the subject of moods. The protagonist has the low-down laudry line blues and as she looks at an empty clothes line across the street she recognizes her own feelings as being similarly empty. Meanwhile her pesky, persistent, little sister is feeling fulled up with energy. Little sister lets her energy overflow as she shows her big sister that the empty clothes line can be used to lift the spirits. The story verse has almost a blues music sound to it that children will love repeating. As a librarian of juvenile literature I recommend the use of this book when discussing moods with pre-school and primary children

The Book of Yaak, by Rick Bass

The Yaak Valley of northwestern Montana is one of the last great wild places in the United States, a land of black bears and grizzlies, wolves and coyotes, bald and golden eagles, and even a handful of humans. But its magic may not be enough to save it from the forces threatening it now. In The Book of Yaak Rick Bass captures the soul of the valley itself, and he shows how, if places like the Yaak are lost, so too will be the human riches of mystery and imagination.

Amazon.com Review
Rick Bass, a prolific writer of considerable merit, has crafted an elegant plea to save the ecosystem of the Yaak Valley in northwestern Montana. Bass argues that the Yaak deserves to be saved, both for its beauty and for its role in a biological system that stretches through much of North America. To enamor readers with the Yaak he describes it with reverence, and in doing so makes us care. "We are all complicit," he says.

From Library Journal
Popular outdoor author Bass (Lost Grizzlies, LJ 11/1/95) returns to his home turf in the Yaak Valley of northwestern Montana, also the setting for his Winter Notes from Montana (LJ 2/15/91). As a resident of that remote area for over ten years, Bass seems to have been accepted by the few locals who populate the canyon. Much of this work concerns his attempt to protect the remaining wilderness of the area, a vital corridor for genetic replenishment of wildlife from Canada. As he ponders the question of the worth of such a place, Bass writes countless letters to anyone he feels may aid in stopping the construction of the roads that facilitate logging in the area. Although bitterness occasionally surfaces in his account, the author remains hopeful as he describes attempts to forge alliances with diverse groups of loggers, hunters, and other residents. In the process of reconciling his artistic side (writing) with his scientific training as a geologist, he once again paints a marvelous portrait of life in an area of rugged beauty. Recommended for all public, regional, and nature collections.?Tim Markus, Evergreen State Coll. Lib., Olympia, Wash.

From Kirkus Reviews
An urgent plea by a longtime resident to preserve one of the lower 48's remaining wilderness areas. Nestled where Idaho, Montana, and Alberta, Canada, meet, the Yaak Valley--the name means ``arrow'' in Kootenai--is a treasure vault of old-growth pine, spruce, and Douglas fir. It is also a prime target for the logging industry, which now seeks to open the Yaak to clearcut logging. Bass (The Lost Grizzlies, 1995, etc.) is scandalized by this possibility, especially inasmuch as the US Forest Service subsidizes such logging ``to the tune of one or two billion dollars per decade'' and ``timber companies working on public lands in the West continue to post record quarterly profits for their stockholders''--precisely because of the government's largess. This well-written, impatient, often polemical book urges that the Yaak, and other wild places, be set aside from economic development, and Bass's program is modest: ``I want,'' he writes, ``the last few roadless areas in this still-wild valley to remain that way.'' He also celebrates the power of wilderness to inspire the meditative, simple life: ``I practice going slow,'' he says, ``at a pace that can be sustained. I practice looking around at things.'' He also introduces us to neighbors who have found a special solace in the deep woods. Bass argues that most Montanans and Idahoans oppose any further destruction of their backyard wilderness and demonstrates how important old-growth forest is to the health of the entire ecosystem. Much of this will be familiar territory to readers who know Bass's work, for he has written about the Yaak before in books like Winter (1991) and The Ninemile Wolves (1992). Even so, this is a valuable document in the continuing battle over wilderness preservation. -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

A beautiful book about conservation
By Ashley
An absolutely amazing conservation book. Rick Bass does a beautiful job of discussing the condition of a forested area in Montana called the Yaak Valley. This book really gets to me because there are so many places in North America that need help and the government isn't always willing to listen or care because all they care about is the bottom dollar. I will definitely be reading more by Rick Bass in the future.

Woodsman, spare that old growth. . .
By Ronald Scheer
I first came across Rick Bass in the very readable collection "Big Sky Reader." His essay there about accompanying a friend on a fishing trip with several out-of-state fishermen was an enjoyable glimpse into the lives of folks in the thinly populated woods of the far northwestern corner of Montana. It's a self-sufficient kind of life, where people make do with few amenities in exchange for the beauty and solitude of the mountains and the isolation that comes with many months of snow and cold.
That essay, "This Savage Land," appears in this collection of the author's nonfiction. However, instead of the self-effacing, quiet humor of that essay, the rest of this book is a poignant account of an apparently doomed effort to preserve the Yaak River valley as a wilderness and bring a stop to the clear-cut logging that has been steadily turning it into a vast area of devastation. Chapters describing the author's letter-writing campaigns and his trip to Washington DC to make his case before Montana's congressmen alternate with descriptions of walks on the mountains, sighting bears and other wildlife, discoursing on the delicately interrelated flora and fauna, and admiring what is left of the old growth forests. There's also a chapter on the experience of the winter months and another on a summer of fires in the mountains and the role that fire plays in the regeneration and preservation of forests.
Through it all are the themes of loss and the ruinous harm of the logging industry, which he believes is not simply destroying a wilderness area but removing a critical link connecting regions where grizzlies, wolves, and other forms of wilderness wildlife still survive. When that connection is gone, he believes that these creatures will quickly die out. Meanwhile, the poet in him believes that something also dies within humankind when the wilderness is gone, and he reminds us that once it's gone it will be gone forever.
I recommend this book to anyone interested in the mountainous West, nature writing, and the lives of people in sparsely populated and isolated areas. It's also a book for those whose hearts respond to the call of the wild and who are concerned by the destruction of national forests by the heedless economics of the logging industry and its strangle-hold in government and other seats of power.

Not for the
By buzzsaw@tdstelme.net
Rick Bass has a knack for going far beyond the traditional environmentalist arguments about biodiversity and global warming, arguments that have fallen on deaf ears for the past thirty-plus years in this country. In his moving story of the Yaak Valley in northwestern Montana, he does touch on these subjects--the economic and other reasons why the Yaak should be protected from out-of-state corporate interests--but his story is more far-reaching than that. He understands that the value of a forest extends to something less tangible than economics, and he says it as well as any other living writer. His discussion of the correspondences he's had with the Montana Congressional delegation is entertaining and poignant, and his descriptions of natural scenes are visceral and succinct. At times his tone is like that of fellow naturalist Doug Peacock, but his skill with words is far greater. Bass gets a lot of bang out of few words. You'll come away feeling like writing to your Congresspeople. A beautiful and passionate account.

Martha Graham: A Dancer's Life, by Russell Freedman

Martha Graham, the American dancer, teacher, and choreographer, revolutionized the world of modern dance. She possessed a great gift for revealing emotion through dance, expressing beliefs and telling stories in an utterly new way. Newbery Medalist Russell Freedman documents Martha Graham's life from her birth in 1894 to her final dance performance at the age of seventy-five and continued career as a choreographer until her death in 1991. Graham's own recollections as well as those of her dancers, students, friends, and lovers reveal Graham's unwavering dedication, her extraordinary sense of artistry, and the fierce intensity that left an impression on all who saw her perform. Original research based on interviews and a remarkable collection of photographs not widely reproduced give this biography a rare and unparalleled depth. Includes notes,a bibliography, and an index.

Amazon.com Review
Martha Graham (1894-1991) referred to her dancers as "acrobats of God," but in truth it was she who seemed divinely inspired. Graham was a dancer, choreographer, and teacher for more than 70 years, and during that time she changed the landscape of dance forever. An unlikely candidate for a dance diva, she was shorter and more muscular than the principal ballet dancers of her time and she didn't start dancing until age 22--a flower long past her bloom in the eyes of most choreographers. Nonetheless, Graham managed to turn the dance world on its tutu with her innovative approach to movement and teaching and her clear understanding that feelings are not always graceful, but always intense.

Russell Freedman, who won the Newbery Medal in 1988 for Lincoln: A Photobiography and Newbery Honors for The Wright Brothers: How They Invented the Airplane (1992) and Eleanor Roosevelt: A Life of Discovery (1994), has once again crafted a beautiful, intriguing biography. He traces Graham's remarkable life from a childhood filled with imaginative play, to her decision to attend dance school instead of college, through her departure from the Broadway Follies to pursue her own dance style, and onward through her late life, when she continued teaching and creating distinctive performance pieces. The fascinating biography is complemented by exquisite black-and-white photographs that reveal Graham's sense of beauty and her remarkable ability to translate pure, raw emotions into expressive movement. Freedman's lovely tribute makes us fully believe Graham when she says, "I did not choose to be a dancer, I was chosen." (Young Adult/Adult) --Brangien Davis

From Publishers Weekly
Freedman (Lincoln; Eleanor Roosevelt; Franklin Delano Roosevelt) once again animates American history through biography; here he adds culture to the mix as he chronicles the inspiring life of legendary dancer Martha Graham. The venerable author hooks readers in immediately with his description of young Martha learning to move her body by watching a lion pace from one side of its cage to the other. Freedman then seamlessly charts the fiery, passionate Graham's rise from a 19-year-old "homely, overweight" dance student to principal dancer to teacher to the creator of modern dance. The biography points up Graham's commitment to a "uniquely American style of dance," focusing on such works as Frontier, an homage to her ancestral roots, and Appalachian Spring, for which she collaborated with composer Aaron Copland. Freedman acknowledges that the dancer's sources of inspiration and consolation came from other American artists: writer Emily Dickinson (the source of Graham's work Acts of Light) and composer Scott Joplin (Maple Leaf Rag was her last complete work), among them. Her passions were not circumscribed to her work; she also took stands on tough political issues, both in her dance (e.g., Deep Song, 1937, which "expressed her anguish over the brutal Spanish Civil War") and in her life?she refused to perform at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin ("How could I dance in Nazi Germany?"). But Freedman does not paint an unblemished picture. His abundant sources, including unpublished transcripts of an interview with Graham's longtime companion Louis Horst, as well as his own interviews with Graham's former dancers, colleagues and friends, make clear the shadow side of her passionate nature. What emerges from these pages is a multilayered view of a genius who danced and choreographed, and designed her own costumes and lighting, but who was also human?a woman who laughed and cried, hoped and feared, and who unflinchingly followed her dream. Stunning photographs, arrayed chronologically, demonstrate the dramatic changes Graham wrought upon dance as a discipline. Four at the close of the volume, showing Graham in what appear to be a dance sequence, are particularly spectacular. This outstanding biography speaks not only to dancers but to anyone interested in the arts, history or the American entrepreneurial spirit. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 UpAThe renowned dancer, choreographer, and teacher is a fascinating subject. Graham was a woman who defied the oddsAshe did not start dancing until she was 19, she did not have a traditional tall, lithe dancer's physique, and yet through sheer will power and perseverance, she became the most important name in modern dance. A living legend, she performed until she was 75, created 181 dancesAthe last at age 95. The personal cost of such fame was high indeed. She would be the first to admit that she lived to dance. Freedman has done an extraordinary job of conveying that passion and of presenting Graham's complex personality as viewed through multiple perspectives. It is evident through his careful notes and annotated bibliography that he did his research. As in his previous books, the format utilizes generous margins and a wealth of sharply reproduced black-and-white photographs depicting the many faces and poses of Graham dancing, teaching...always performing. This book has more detail and photographs than Trudy Garfunkel's Letter to the World: The Life and Dances of Martha Graham (Little, Brown, 1995). Recommend it to students looking for a great woman's biography, as well as to dance fans or, for that matter, any aspiring artists. A remarkable look at a remarkable talent.AMarilyn Payne Phillips, University City Public Library, MO

I am a former Graham Dancer, and when I saw this book, I had some very intense emotions, it shows Martha in her best years, the pictures are beautiful, some of them are very rare to see, and if you want to see the beauty, or the drama, of that Incredible American Woman, this is the book you need to own. As a Graham Based Dance Teacher, I use this book to show some intentions in the movement, or I simply quote her, I wish you a wonderful Journey in the world of Martha Graham...

Elegant Trio of Words, Pictures and Feelings
By Julie Jordan Scott
This book is a beautiful, concise study of her life. Studying Martha Graham's life is an awakening experience. Reading Graham's memoir "Blood Memory" simultaneously provides a beautiful counterpoint, knowing the subject will not observe herself in the same way as her biographer.
I dance away from this book with a definite appreciation for Graham's brilliance in creativity and willingness to navigate the many rough patches she encountered AND give such a gift to humanity at the same time.
The numbers of influential people she touched is amazing and enlightening.
I suggest this book for any creative thinker: there are applications for all of us.

About the Author
ANDREW BEYER thoroughly revolutionized handicapping when he created his “Beyer Speed Figures,” a measure of how fast a horse has run in a given race, and an indispensable tool for horseplayers. Making the necessary calculations to develop a set of figures for each horse in each race was too time-consuming for most horseplayers, so in 1992 the Daily Racing Form commissioned Beyer and his associates to provide his speed figures for every horse competing in North America. Beyer has been a columnist for the Washington Post since 1978, and contributes regularly to the Daily Racing Form. He is considered one of the leading experts on horse racing.

this is a good book to start with
By Sheny Giannelli
If you want to improve your luck at the track, this is a good book to start with. Although the author claims that there is no sure way to pick em, he does explain all the deciding factors. I liked his stories (his experience and others'). If you want to get serious about playing the track, it takes comparative and analytical decision-making. And this author shows you how to analyze horses' track records - with lots of examples (which i liked). It's a good read (just for the stories alone) and you don't have to read the chapters sequentially. It's a good "reference" book too.

Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War, by Harry G. Summers

With more than one hundred four-color maps supplemented by photographs and reconstructions, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War provides the first major visualization of that war as well as a penetrating and comprehensive analysis of the conflict based on both U.S. and Vietnamese postwar accounts. The atlas begins with an overview of the foundations of the Vietnamese nation-state, including its almost two-thousand-year struggle to break free from Chinese domination and its century-long fight to gain its independence from French colonial rule, and sets the 1954 partition of the country and the subsequent American involvement there in their cold war context. U.S. involvement is examined in depth to provide an understanding of why America intervened and why, despite its battlefield successes, it ultimately failed to obtain its political objective: a free and independent South Vietnam. Colonel Harry G. Summers, Jr., examines the many anomalies of the war, including why the United States bought the Communist propaganda line that relations between China and Vietnam were as "the lips to the teeth," when Vietnam actually felt betrayed by its Chinese "ally." Unlike most U.S. writings on the war, which end with the 1968 Tet Offensive - a failing analogous to ending the study of World War II with Stalingrad or Guadalcanal - Summers' essay draws on North Vietnamese sources to explode the notion that the war was an indigenous South Vietnamese uprising. He details the destruction of the Viet Cong guerrillas in the Tet Offensive and tells how the war was primarily a conventional one waged by the regular armed forces of North Vietnam during the last seven years. The atlas examines the curious effect of the U.S. antiwar movement, the "Vietnamization" of the war, the Americans' cynical abandonment of their Asian ally, and the final North Vietnamese multi-division blitzkrieg that led to the fall of Saigon in 1975, as well as Robert McNamara's self-serving apologia that the war was militarily unwinnable from the onset. Given the strong emotion involved, many of the Vietname generation may continue to be wedded to their prejudices. But it has been said that those who came of age after the war know there is a skeleton in the family closet and now want to be let in on the secret. An examination of the forensic evidence, the Historical Atlas of the Vietnam War is the closest we have yet come to a thorough autopsy of that debacle.

By Edwin E. Moise
Too many things are shown in the wrong places on the maps.
The most hilarious example is on page 97. Laos had two capital cities: the royal capital of Luang Prabang, where the (purely ceremonial) king lived, and the administrative capital of Vientiane, where there was an actual government. On this map, Luang Prabang has been moved across the border into North Vietnam (a very strange place for the royal capital of Laos), while Vientiane has been moved across the other border into Thailand. The same map also has the town of Vinh, in North Vietnam, shifted westward from its actual location near the coast; it appears on this map to be closer to the Laotian border than to the sea.
Flip one page back to look at the map on page 95, which shows the Tonkin Gulf Incidents and the U.S. air strikes of August 5, 1964. This map has Vinh in the right place, but Hanoi has been mislocated; it is shown as being southwest of Haipong (Hanoi is actually northwest of Haiphong). More important, the map shows Hon Gai, one of the targets of the U.S. air strikes, as being right next to the Chinese border. Hon Gai is actually well to the southwest of the location shown; if it had been close to the Chinese border, Lyndon Johnson would not have approved the strike against it in this operation. The location shown for the aircraft carrier Constellation, which launched the planes for the strike against Hon Gai, is also seriously inaccurate.
A small inset map on page 95 shows the tracks of the two U.S. destroyers Maddox and Turner Joy, on the night of August 4, 1964, and the tracks of objects that appeared on their radar, believed to be torpedo boats attacking them. The track shown for the supposed torpedo boat designated V2 bears no resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers, and the track shown for V1 does not bear a close resemblance to any track that shows in the records of the destroyers.
I have not found so many errors in other maps in this atlas, but I have found more than I liked. The one thing an atlas is absolutely supposed to do is show things in the correct locations on the maps.

Excellent
By D. C. Carrad
Adds a new dimension sorely lacking in other good books about Vietnam. Good historical coverage all the way back to pre-history, sharp clear graphics and comprehensive coverage. I was there in 1968-69 and think this book is a valuable addition to anyone's Vietnam collection -- or a fine place to start if you are just learning about this country and its wars. Kudos to Colonel Summers, the author, for producing such a fine atlas.

Wandering Cities, Misplaced Units
By B. SMITH
I would consider The West Point Atlas of American Wars to be the gold standard of Military Atlases, by comparison this is tin. The maps are beautiful, well produced, and inaccurate all to often. The location of major Cities; Military units, and bases constantly change, are in the wrong place, or are left out completely. I don't believe that Qui Nhon the largest city in Central Viet Nam was ever located in the proper place, (how hard is it to put sea ports on the sea? ) and was often not shown. This would be like leaving Richmond out of an atlas of Civil War battles in the East. Other examples Tuy Hoa and Song Cau are also important coastal cities. They come and go move to other cities locations or are replaced by other cities or even towns. This is like having maps were Baltimore, Washington, and Philadelphia randomly appeared, disappeared, and changed places, or move, in a random manner. Interestingly the only map which seems to show all the coastal cities of Viet Nam where they really are is the 1945 French map on p45. This also applies to military bases. Phu Cat was one of the largest Air Force bases in Viet Nam, it originally was located 40 miles northwest of Qui Nhon before it started to move. It is first seen on p71 20 miles south of where it started; by p97 it has replaced Tuy Hoa 100 miles southwest and now on the coast; p171 has it back where it was first located, but never fear, the first tactical fighter wing that was stationed at Phu Cat is shown on p93 located in the mountains under triple canopy northwest of Tuy Hoa before Tuy Hoa vanishes, replaced by Van Canh, then Phu Cat, Tuy Hoa vanishes again, but then reappears in the proper place, interesting. Every City in South Viet Nam Except Saigon, and Da Nang move and vanish on these maps, I'm just getting tired of giving examples. The real question is, what good is a supposed atlas if the maps are this carelessly done?

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-7?Eliza Yates is 12 years old in 1887 when she runs away from her cruel aunt and uncle and sets off for Tinville, Colorado, in search of her missing father. After being accosted by a tramp, she disguises herself as a boy, and it is "Elijah Bates" who meets up with Calvin Featherbone, an 18-year-old who calls himself the "Gentleman Outlaw." He is also headed for Tinville, in search of that town's Sheriff Yates, a man he believes shot his father in the back. The two join forces, though it is soon obvious both to Eliza and readers that Calvin is a greenhorn who will do nothing but get them into scrapes with his fool ideas. Hahn has obviously done her research, and succeeds in bringing the ambiance of the Old West to her novel. The result is a fast, funny, and entertaining adventure that's just the thing for fans of "Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman."?Elizabeth Mellett, Brookline Public Library, MA

From Booklist
Gr. 5^-8. The plot isn't new: orphan girl Eliza Yates cuts her hair, wears boys' clothes, changes her name to make people think she's a boy, and travels West to find her missing father. Along the way, she saves Calvin Featherbone, a young man who fancies himself a con artist. Together, they make their way to Tinville, Colorado, where, coincidentally, Calvin's father was killed by a certain Sheriff Yates. Calvin plans to avenge the murder, but he gets himself and Eliza in so much trouble with his amateurish schemes that the pair arrives in town ready to be hanged as horse thieves. Hahn's writing crackles like gunshot in the Ol' West, and Eliza and Calvin make a lovable team. The plotting is completely predictable, but it's tight and fast paced, and Hahn does a fine job of recreating the atmosphere of the days of cowboys and miners. Susan Dove Lempke

From Kirkus Reviews
Colorful characterizations and high-spirited language carry this ripsnorting western. After the death of her mother, Eliza, 12, runs away from her cruel and unscrupulous Kansas relatives. She sets out with her faithful dog, Caesar, to find her father in the silver mines of Colorado; early on, in a stolen pair of overalls, she transforms herself into ``Eli.'' Soon after she meets Calvin Featherbone, known as the Gentleman Outlaw, who has been shot and left for dead by a pack of scoundrels. A healed Calvin--who talks ``like he swallowed a dictionary''--sets off with Eli for Tinville, Colorado, to shoot his sworn enemy, Sheriff Alfred Yates. The sheriff happens to be Eliza's father. Hahn (Look For Me By Moonlight, 1995, etc.) has written an amusing comedy of errors that derives much of its humor from Calvin's speech and manners and Eliza's wry asides alluding to her true identity as a girl. With plenty of twists and turns--and a cameo appearance by Doc Holliday--it's a real cowgirl triumph. (Fiction. 10-14) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.

Finally! A good western story with a great girl heroine
By A Customer
The story starts out stereotypically enough; a young girl forced to live with mean relatives, disguises herself as a boy and runs away from home. But her adventures and espescially her antagonistic friendship with the gentleman outlaw take this book above the pat story. She has a goal; to get to Tinville and maybe find her father, but she needs money. The gentleman outlaw has money, but he needs her help in his schemes. Out of their mutual need, they stick together, and she proves herself a formidable ally to the end. Their adventures together are so enthralling, one almost forgets entirely about the inevitable ending. This book is reminiscent of one of my favorite movie's -- Paper Moon, with a less fantastical outcome, but no less triumphant.

An Exciting Western! A Definate Must!
By A Customer
This great book gives you an idea of what it'd be like living in the time of the Great Gold Rush. Eliza Yates, a mistreated girl, runs away with her dog, Caeser, and decedes its better to run as a boy. She disguises herself as one, christens herself Elijah Bates, Eli for short, and bumps into Calvin, who calls himself the Gentleman Outlaw. He is determined to kill the Tinville Shreiff, who's name happens to be Yates. Eliza is shocked, but keeps quiet about it. Together they encounter problems, and Calvin's street-smart intellect seems to worm them out. Eliza starts to distrust Calvin and gets angry at him when he gambles off 20 dollars! This story is one of humor, excitement, and fun. I suggest you read it!!!

The Gentelman Outlaw and Me-Eli: A Story the the Old West
By A Customer
This book is a really good book. Like all of Mary Downing Hahn's books, this book is unlike others. Eliza, a tomboy girl who lives with her aunt and uncle decides to go and try to find her papa. On her journy she meets Calvin. A boy that claims he's an outlaw. They go through many adventures and then in the end Eliza shows true courage and they also find a shocking surprise that awaits them at the end of their journey. I recemend this book to ages 9 and up.

From Wikipedia: John Griffith "Jack" London (born John Griffith Chaney,[1] January 12, 1876 - November 22, 1916)[2][3][4][5] was an American author, journalist, and social activist. He was a pioneer in the then-burgeoning world of commercial magazine fiction and was one of the first fiction writers to obtain worldwide celebrity and a large fortune from his fiction alone.[6] He is best remembered as the author of Call of the Wild and White Fang, both set in the Klondike Gold Rush, as well as the short stories "To Build a Fire", "An Odyssey of the North", and "Love of Life".[citation needed] He also wrote of the South Pacific in such stories as "The Pearls of Parlay" and "The Heathen", and of the San Francisco Bay area in The Sea Wolf. ~~~ The Call of the Wild is a novella by American author Jack London published in 1903. The story takes place in the extreme conditions of the Yukon during the 19th-century Klondike Gold Rush where strong sled dogs were in high demand. After Buck, a domesticated dog, is snatched from a pastoral ranch in California, he is sold into a brutal life as a sled dog. The novella details Buck's struggle to adjust and survive the cruel treatment he receives from humans, other dogs, and nature. He eventually sheds the veneer of civilization altogether and instead relies on primordial instincts and the lessons he has learned to become a respected and feared leader in the wild. ~~~ The Call of the Wild is London's most popular work and is considered the masterpiece of his so-called "early period."[1] The novella is often classified as children's literature because of its animal protagonist, but the maturity of its subject matter makes it valuable for older audiences as well. Major themes include survival of the fittest, civilization versus nature, and fate versus free will.[2] ~~~ The Yeehat, a group of Alaska Natives portrayed in Call of the Wild, were a figment of London's imagination.[3]

Call of the Wild and Related Readings
By Trey Werner
This book was a great read from the beginning to the end! Buck is an exceptional dog and is the main character of this story. He was living a good life in California but it went bad when he was stolen and sent to a dog slavery in Alaska. He was put to work on a dog sled team pulling a really heavy sled. Buck starts a fight with one of the other dogs, named Spitz. He and Spitz are fighting to establish who has dominance. Buck won that fight. The original owner and caretaker of the dog slavery was very abusive to the dogs but he finally gets fired and a a new manager/caretaker, Thornton, takes over. Buck really likes Thornton. Thornton takes Buck to on a trip to the Alaska tundra and after their trips he was going to let buck go free but Buck is so attached to Thornton he can't leave and decides to stay with him. Buck loves his new life! I really enjoyed this book. It takes place in the Alaska woods and there was enough action in the book to keep me interested. The lesson I learned from this story is that people need to treat animals with respect and love and if you do, they will love you back.
