A graduate of Harvard, where he studied art and art history, he taught school before embarking on a career as a photographer. Richard Brown's Photographic Magic!

We here in Northern New England consider Richard Brown and his camera a regional treasure. I have been a devotee of his published photographic work since the days twenty years ago when his gorgeous photography would grace the covers of Country Journal, a magazine celebrating the glories of rural life, and that often used Brown's spectacular work featuring magnificently natural shots of life in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. Here brown focuses his talents and his camera to give us seven dozen spectacular photographs of various European gardens throughout Europe.
This book has a wonderful set of shots of quite breath-taking and beautiful gardens and garden scenes from all over the world. The settings vary, from the Cotswold's of Britain to the palace gardens at Versailles, from the gardens of Sissinghurst, to the rural background of Keukenhof. Many of the photographs are of lesser-known spots, but all are uniformly eye-catching and memorable, whether they are of a window box in the Swiss Alps or the stone walkway in the British countryside. The photographs are a superb representation of one of the foremost contemporary landscape photographers.
Brown's photographs are truly a contemporary equivalent of those timeless pictures produced by legends such as Eliot Porter. Richard Brown demonstrates a singular talent for capturing the beauty native to the gardens and for sharing that extraordinary beauty with the world. Enjoy!

However, the inept archers cause her to fall in love with a frog and a television. All's well that ends well-the homesick cupids get back to Greece and Miss Earth begins (without outside help) to see the charms of a man she had previously spurned. Although the Tattletale and Copycat Clubs are still battling, this is really the story of Fawn Petros, who misses her father in far-off Antarctica. By caring for the little visitors, she begins to gain self-confidence and even learns to stand up to her sassy classmates when they casually call her "stupid." Miss Earth is made to play the fool with her cupid-wrought crushes, but her slightly acerbic professional manner and dry wit allow her to emerge with her dignity unscathed. The tongue-in-cheek humor and glimmers of real emotion in this installment will please both fervent fans and newcomers to the series.

The four stupid cupids are the main characters. This book is about four stupids cupids shooting people to make them fall in love.It is realy funny.They shot a dart at a principal and made the principal fall in love with a cat. The four stupid cupids want people to fall in love with the write people.But they do some stupid things, one of the cupids shot a tiny little pencil at a childes finger and it started to bleed a little!But after that they make the people fall inlove with the right people I cant tell you any more about this book because it wont be as exciting. I give this book 10 out of 10 and I recommend this book to ages 8 and up. The author of this book is Gregory Maguire.

Love Assignment Gone Off Target

Love could be accidental and confusing especially to a cupid. In a small town where everybody knows one another pretty well, tactical errors by four cupids around Valentine's Day could be devastatingly hysterical. In Mr. Maguire's story, the children seem to govern the municipality. Their conversations are uproarious, whether they are talking among themselves or to the adults. They are on a mission and they wouldn't give up until it is completed their way. The confidence portrayed by each character makes this book a great read for children. As for an adult, it is a cute story that induces laughter which is always a rewarding pastime.

Children may not catch all the humorous references, like the yellow-pages ad for Yazgur's farm (site of the real Woodstock), but will quickly catch on to refrains in the text echoing "Old MacDonald." But Palatini deftly turns the tables on Gritch, whose own sense of importance (and the skywritten warning "Surrender Piggies!" ) gives her victims time to implement a plan to save their bacon. When hungry Gritch arrives at the farm, she can't find a single pig. Instead, she finds a wolf, whom she slyly invites home: "I always enjoy having a wolf for lunch." The wry, peppery dialogue is simply great ("Look, Shorty, I've been quack-quacked here, moo-mooed there, and clucked-clucked everywhere all over this farm" ), and Palatini's allusions to popular children's stories from The Wizard of Oz to the "Three Little Pigs" will delight kids. So much fun for kids and parents too!

I am a children's librarian and an important part of my job is to find picture books to read aloud during our story hours. Three important criteria used to select a picture book to read to a group of children are: 1) Does the reader have fun with the story? And will they be able to convey this enthusiasm to the audience? 2) Will the children be enjoying the story? and 3) Are the pictures pleasing to the eye? Piggie Pie by Margie Palatini results in a very enthusiastic YES! to all three of these criteria.

Gritch the Witch is hungry. After deciding she wants to make piggie pie, but has no pigs handy, she begins her quest to find piggies. Upon arriving on Old MacDonald's farm, she spots some delicious looking piggies as she's flying on her broom over the farm. However, when she lands, there isn't a piggie to be found. The piggies are on to her and are disguised in a VERY clever manner, so she won't notice them. Will she find out? What will happen next?

When I read this in one of my story hours, the children (who ranged from toddler age to about 5 years old) were VERY into the story. This book also has that wonderful ability to make adults laugh as well, with some references to other tales and clever pictures. A person who loves to use different voices (such as a screechy witch voice) will have a field day reading this book aloud to children.

This book comes with my very enthusiastic recommendation. Enjoy!

This picture book makes a wonderful read aloud but I would suggest small groups so children can view the humor in the illustrations. The humor, wordplay, and references to other fairy tales and Mother Goose rhymes make this book suitable for a variety of age levels.

Pigs Outsmart Gritch the Witch!!

What do you do when you want Piggie Pie for breakfast and you are out of piggies? If you are Gritch the Witch, you hop on your broomstick and head for Old MacDonald's farm, which is exactly what happens in the story Piggie Pie! by Margie Palatini. However, these piggies are too smart for Gritch and thwart her attempt to find them by donning costumes of other animals and pretending that there are "No piggies" at Old MacDonald's farm. Any child who hears this story will need to catch his breath from
laughing so hard as Gritch the Witch becomes more frustrated and excited as each page turns. The laughter will reach a crescendo when Gritch meets Mr. Wolf and they each have their own plan for lunch.
Librarians will have to arm wrestle each other to see who gets to be the one to read this story at a story time program. Each page is ripe with numerous opportunities to try out various voices of each of the animals. Howard Fine's illustrations are an integral part of the story because they clarify how the piggies fool Gritch. By the end of this delightfully funny story all who hear it will be rolling in the aisles!

Great textbook but used seller misrepresented condition of book
By C. Brummel
Textbook is awesome and used in my son's homeschooling online math course. However, the used seller listed the book's condition as "good" but it was actually almost ready for the trash pile. The spine was fractured, the cover partially ripped, there were torn pages, most pages had been heavily marked, and there was even several pieces of garbage including chewing gum smashed inside. I will not return it because it isn't worth the price of postage, but I will never again buy a book from that seller. :(

Because only six of the poets are represented by more than one poem, however, readers are unlikely to get a strong sense of any one poet, despite the biographical entry on each. Alcorn's (Langston Hughes: An Illustrated Edition) abstract mixed-media illustrations on grainy, almost linenlike paper recalls Harlem Renaissance artist Aaron Douglas and, at times, the kaleidoscopic space of Marc Chagall. Each illustration is a complex response to the poem, inviting readers to both study the artwork and muse over the text. Facing each biographical note is a full page of taupe-and-white pattern, however, which quickly grows monotonous, particularly in comparison with the striking forms and splintered spaces of the full-color art. Rather than relegating the artwork to a supporting role, this book places the paintings on at least the same level as the classic poems. While those who love poetry may wish there were more poems, the strong selections that are included here?coupled with the dramatic paintings they have inspired?are likely to put readers on the trail to the poets' further works. Not only does this book give you a variety of African-American poets,it also supplies you with a brief background of each author. This gives you some of the ingredients it took to make each poem. There are thirty-six poems total. Of the twenty-five poets, Clinton,(author), selects more than one piece from some of them. For those who only know of a few poets, this book allows you to learn about others.

The illustrator (Stephen Alcorn)Uses lots of color to express the feelings of the poem. These are the type of pictures that you must look at with a keen eye. A lot of symbolism is used in his drawings. You can get a general idea of the poem by looking at the pictures. To check this book out would be an injustice. this is a must buy book. Everyones library should consist of this poetic history.

This volume presents the truth of the African-American experience. If you are an educator, throw away the history books that portray one-dimensional Euro-Centric apologetics of America's second greatest national shame. So also, set aside the equally one sided views of the greed-poisoned youth of what has informed everything "cool" in American culture. Pick up this book that shows the articulate rage of justice denied. The artwork alone would be worth the price of purchase as it would tell the tale as well. But the poems and mini-bios present an awesome invitation to research a culture rich in literacy and experience. This book should be in every elementary school library in America and on the shelf of every home of everyone that dares to call themselves "American" (Afro or otherwise)

starts off with a strong flame and soon fizzles out

Due to the recent craze with this vampire genre in books and on film, with sexy immortals falling for sweet and nonchalant girls hoping to give them everlasting love and life I was taken aback when reading this book. I forgot that these (heartthrobs) vampires are supposed to be merciless bloodsucking killers! But thanks to Look For Me By The Moonlight I wont ever forget it again!

Cynda is the young, plain, impressionable heroin moving to Maine to live with her estranged father

at his old inn. He left her when she was six to be with his now wife, a former student in his literature class. They have a young annoying son, Todd and one on the way. Immediately Cynda starts feeling alone and unwelcome in her quite frightening old house. She meets a young, artistic loner named Will who seems interested in her. I thought Will was the awaited vampire that would sweep her off her feet. Although she swooned after him for a day or so he was out of her book the moment she met Vincent. He's a charming older and wiser man with good looks and a great personality. She and her parents are taken with this worldly man almost immediately. They're impressed by his intelligence and conversation. But Todd, Will and even the family cat are disturbed by his presence although Cynda doesn't seem to notice or care.

There relationship seems quite strange considering he's likely in his mid-thirties and she's sixteen. He makes secret gestures and passes at her soon inviting her to join him in the woods at night where she loses her head and heart. Making out with him frequently Cynda thinks she's in love and feels no wrong and even I wanted it to work. Inappropriate? Yes, But I figured "there vampires right?" There moral compasses must differ quite a bit from us mere mortals!

Before long Vincents real motives are brought to light when he begins sucking Cynda's blood each

night and draining her of energy in the day time. Slowly he makes her slip into a depression and change into a vampire herself beacause soon she too only craves blood from others. Transformed into this robotic state Vincent uses intimidation to keep her from telling her parents who stupidly think she has a flu.

During the rushed ending to the book Cynda decides at the last minute to get rid of Vincent with the help of Will. What kept this book from being good was the fact that it was beyond realistic. Even though this is a book about vampires and ghosts, etc. I still found it hard to believe that Cynda's parents were so wrapped up in their own lives they hardly noticed a change in their daughter. Even when Cynda cried and pleaded for her father not to leave her side saying "Don't leave me daddy, stay with me, don't let him come back.", her father still suspects nothing of the stranger in their house and leaves Cynda alone in her room acting as if she irritated him. His young wife proves to be no help either and only when Vincent is dead do they act like normal human beings but I guess the authors excuse for this was they were "under a spell". How convenient!

It was an easy an mildly enjoyable read. Some humor and suspense tried to fill in the holes of the plot but it was OK. I applaud the author for reminding me that not all vampires are friendly and want to seduce me.

I would recommend this book because it is very suspenseful and keeps your attention. There is a lot of detail in the story which makes it more interesting to read. The story also has unsuspecting events, which makes it exciting. This book would be suited more for girls because it it's about romance and the consequences that come along with it. The book is about a sixteen year old girl, Cynda, who goes to live with her father after her parents get divorced. He owns a hotel that everybody seems to think is haunted, because a young girl was killed there. Her dad has since been remarried and has one child and one on the way. Between his new wife and kids, Cynda feels left out. Just when she is starting to get the feel of things, a new guest named Vincent comes to stay at the hotel. Cynda falls in love with him, even though he is twice her age. This causes some major conflicts between her and her stepmother. She then finds out that the murders that took place at the hotel were committed by Vincent. Cynda wonders how he could be related to these crimes if they were committed over 50 years ago. Soon everyone will find out who Vincent really is and Cynda feels she has to put a stop to it, before she gets into the middle of it. One of the best aspects of the book was how the author puts so much detail into the story. It is almost like you are there. The exciting details then lead up to the surprising conclusion. The book always keeps you interested and you never want to put it down. One of the bad aspects of the book is that some parts seem too unreal to believe. I think this is one of the most interesting novels to read by Mary Downing Hahn.

Great textbook for college

Good textbook for any Texas History class. Despite the legends and lore of the first Texans, it sheds light on how hard those Texans had to work amidst their hostile conditions. This book also spotlights the Tejanos, and their struggle for acceptance in the wake of the Anglo-Texan influx.

A Nice Addition to any Library

Found this at a thrift store and now that I've had a chance to revisit the book again before I watched the movie again, I can finally get around to reading this screenplay. All I can say is, if you don't have time to watch the movie, this book will suffice as a handy reference. It's all here. There are no deleted scenes or lines. I dare you to read Atticus' lines without hearing in your head the sexy baritone of Gregory Peck who was born to play this role.
The essays and song lyrics at the end are also good reading. The first essay provides a useful history of what ultimately caused the Great Depression and how it affected everyone. The next is the story of a young child growing up in Florida during the depression observing his lawyer father take a stand against an injustice done to his family. Next is a rather long tale of a depression era young boy in Alabama who is bullied by another boy at school. He is encouraged by his family to invite this bully to Thanksgiving dinner where his true colors come out and he ultimately ceases picking on the victim. Another essay is the observation of a young man working in a soda plant who becomes acquainted with a shy, introverted Boo Radley type who turns out to be a talented writer. Finally, a father writes of an incident where he intervened one night while crossing through the park with his daughter to break up a group of white boys beating on one innocent black boy for trespassing on their turf. Jim Crow laws allowed such injustice and the father struggles to explain social injustice to his inquisitive daughter.
Overall, this screenplay and the related readings make this book a nice addition to any library.
