Good Stuff

I received the book pretty quick after I ordered it which is a definite plus because it was for school. I can't recall how long but no more than a week. The book itself is a good read and really highlights what government is all about. The tests at the end of each chapter are helpful along with the answers at the end of the book. The charts and graphs are interesting. Although this book describes political issues as far a procedures to change or implement them it doesn't seem to get politically sided. That is a definite plus for me because it's too easy to get mad at an author and have that taint your view of the information they are giving.
The book was in great shape when it arrived and the contents pages are well organized for quick reference. The only thing negative I would say is the price seemed a little high, but it is a good book and is politically current. I suppose in a few years the price will drop dramatically when a new edition comes out.

McMillan hangs his informative text on the framework of young Halla and her friends, who await the first flight of the pufflings with eager joy. Many of these fledglings fail to reach the sea on this maiden flight, landing in Halla's village below the cliffs. Here the children wait, armed with cardboard boxes and flashlights, racing to rescue the pufflings before they become prey for cats or dogs, or run over by passing vehicles. Staying up all night, sleeping late into the morning, the children spend two unusual weeks rescuing thousands of baby birds and releasing them to the sea. McMillan's crisp full-color photos record courting and nesting behavior of the puffins and the activities of the children waiting for and performing their rescues. A fine book to foster empathy in young people as well as to inform them, and to show them that children can make a difference in the world.

This is one of the loveliest children's books I've ever read -- not only because the photographs are so stunning -- gorgeously reproduced, and in turns beautiful, humorous, charming, or downright cute -- but also because it shows children working together to take care of the natural world. Really, really wonderful -- don't miss it.

Excellent story of the lives of children in another country

This is a story about small children on an island off the coast of Iceland and how they save pufflings--baby puffins--who go astray on their first flight to the sea and get stranded on the island. The photography is beautiful, and the story emphasizes the puffins' life cycle and how the children know to be ready to rescue the pufflings at the end of the summer. The book is a wonderful vehicle for children where I live (New York City) to imagine life in a completely different place.

Love it....

We have loved this book for years now, and I wish it was easier to get. I wanted to get a copy for each of my children as we just experienced the Night of the Pufflings ourselves, but it must be out of print. Bruce McMillan has managed to capture the event so realistically that we in fact used his book as a "how to" manual of sorts. He describes everything from how the children capture the pufflings to how and where they are released. It gives children - anywhere in the world - a wonderful look into how other children live! We also like, how he incorporated Icelandic words (and their pronounciations) into the book. A wonderfully written and illustrated book!

Excellent book for my purposes!

Ordered this book because I am reviving my high school Spanish from 50 years ago. The book itself is very simple to use, and the condition is as advertised. Although it is earlier edition, it is what our classes currently use. I'm very happy with the book and would recommend it to others, especially as the price for the older edition was only pennies + shipping.

When I purchased this book, at the time only said wear to the cover, so only expecting that issue, I could live with but half of my workbook pages are gone; mind I tell you I have homework in these few dozen of pages! Very dissatisfied. And it took 2 weeks to get here!

Outstanding single ingredient cookbook

I have made five recipes from this book in quick succession, and each has been fantastic both in terms of flavor profile and execution. The Griffiths clearly have a sophisticated palate and enjoy elegant rustic food which is fancy enough to serve at a dinner party. The Amazing Mussels in Saffron Garlic and Sun Dried Tomatoes were exceptionally delicious and really wowed the guests last night. The Endive and Prosciutto Salad with Garlic and Walnuts has a fantastic light dressing and could have been served at a modern Italian restaurant. Also great are Skodarlia--a strange but delicious Greek potato dip that no one could stop eating--and the Garden Garlic Soup, which benefited from a little cream and was incredibly sophisticated and delicious both hot and (possibly even better) cold. There are recipes from all over the world but most seem to derive from the Mediterranean. One will become fearless and skilled in the use of garlic if one cooks through this book, as I've already learned a ton just from making these few recipes. I highly recommend this book.

outstanding recipes for all occasions

I bought this book after attending a summer garlic festival, where I found there were so many varieties of garlic that were unfamiliar to me. Of course, I came home with way too much garlic and found that I needed a new cookbook in order to make good use of it. Along with this book, I also ordered "The Garlic Lovers' Cookbook, v. 2" which is based on recipes from the well-known Gilroy Garlic Festival. Both books have received outstanding recommendations here, but my favorite of the two would definitely be "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic." It is much more informative about all aspects of garlic and its many varieties, and the range of recipes and cooking techniques described is unequalled anywhere else. It is simply outstanding. Even the smallest details, such as advice about which sort of garlic presses work best, are useful and interesting. (I have also found it quite easy to adapt many of the recipes in this book for a slow cooker.)

There are so many recipes that I want to make from this book that life suddenly seems too short to make them all. However, I started by tweaking some of my old favorites, versions of which are in this book. In every case, I have been able to improve on my favorite recipes. Whether your taste runs to American, Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Indian, or other cuisines, you are likely to find recipes here that will please. I appreciated especially a chapter on "light meals" that is perfect for everyday use, and there are also many recipes that are great for special occasions. The wine pairings are also interesting for each recipe; normally I don't pay much attention to such suggestions, but in this case they truly are useful and do compliment the dishes extraordinarily well.

The cookbook from the Gilroy Festival mentioned above is worth a look too, and if you're only looking for standard fare and simple ways of using garlic, it may suffice. It even has a recipe for homemade dog biscuits with garlic! However, it has no pizza, no lasagna or other standard fare, and the recipes in it are loaded with garlic but lack the care and subtlety of approach that keeps me coming back to "Garlic, Garlic, Garlic." It's a great cookbook and, if you already enjoy garlic, you'll easily double your pleasure for it once you start cooking from this book.

A Great Cookbook for Garlic Lovers

Like many of my cookbooks, this was something I found on the shelf in a bookstore, looked through it, and immediately knew I had to have it.
Since then, it's received quite a bit of heavy use - there are a few certain recipes that the book falls right open to, they've been used so much. Others have yet to be tried, but they look just as delicious and appealing as others.
There is plenty of information on selecting and storing garlic, along with preparing it, and even a selection of trivia and stories, making it more than just a list of recipes using the wonderful ingredient. They also recommend some kitchen tools to make it easier to work with garlic - the garlic peeler they recommend is truly magnificent.
The recipes cover the entire range of foods, from simple appetizers and salads, to fancy main courses - to even a few desserts. I regularly hunt down new recipes I have yet to try, and have not been disappointed with any to date. And the Pork Chops with stuffing recipe in here has become my favorite method of cooking pork.
The recipes are also easy to read and follow - no confusing ingredient listings or unclear instructions.

An early John Muir adventure

This is one of John Muir's early books. In this book he travels through Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia and Florida examining the flora and making sketches and saving samples.This was not an easy walk for there were few roads. He experiences some interesting situations along this route...sleeping in a cemetary, illness, getting lost etc. The book ends with him in California, a part which I merely scanned as it had little to do with the Gulf.

Havent quite finished the book yet, but it is great so far. It is amazing to see the difference between his time and my time. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to walk in his shoes, to see things the way he saw them. What an interesting life it must have been.

For example, the tail of the great white shark is shown, and on the following double-page spread the rest of the body swims fiercely, thereby emphasizing its enormity. Through an artful use of color and texture, the marbleized skin of the python and the wrinkled hide of the crocodile seem amazingly real. In several cases, there is a playful overlapping among the animals, as when the gray wolf looks hungrily at the opossum and the tiny painted turtle swims calmly behind the huge shark. As well as offering an inventive exploration of the concepts of big and little, this title serves as an introduction to a group of animals, several of which are endangered. Ages 4^-7. Jenkins, whose previous picture books include Biggest, Strongest, Fastest (1995), here points out the differences in size between animals who are similar in other ways. The artwork combines cuttings of colored, textured papers to form animals that stand out strikingly against white backgrounds. Each spread features a large animal and a related smaller one: sea otter and elephant seal, Siberian tiger and Siamese cat, ostrich and ruby-throated hummingbird. One line of text comments on the two animals' sizes, habits, or habitats. The final pages include a presentation of the comparative sizes of all the animals, a paragraph of additional information about each species, and a bibliography. Handsome textured cut-paper collages on white paper show animals of the same species that are vastly different in size. Since each pair is created to scale (1'' = 8''), viewers can make comparisons. A preface explains that various animals grew bigger or smaller over time to adapt to their habitats. Subsequent spreads depict pairs from the same species--one big, one little--while a single line of text, curving around the larger animal, introduces them: ``Both the Nile crocodile and the African chameleon live in tropical Africa.'' Most of the pairs do not inhabit the same habitat: Siamese cats and tigers are not found together, nor are fennec foxes and gray wolves. Animals include the hummingbird and ostrich, sea otter and elephant seal, capybara and deer mouse. Final pages show the animals in silhouette to scale, with a paragraph of information on each. The collages show artistic license: The Siamese cat is charcoal- colored, instead of the more common representation of buff with dark ears and tail; the capybara doesn't appear to have webbed feet; the Virginia opossum looks strangely unlike itself. The main problem is that Jenkins (Looking Down, 1995, etc.) is unclear about his audience: The opening paragraph on evolution is difficult for young readers; the rest of the book does not reinforce that paragraph for older readers and will put them off as little more than a naming or comparison game. This 1996 book is a precursor to Jenkins' highly acclaimed "Actual Size" (2004). While the latter book fulfills the title's promise by showing animals and animal body parts in their actual size, this book shows them in 1:8 scale; that is, the animals are drawn accurately, but 1/8 smaller than actual size. Although many of the two books' animals are the same, and Jenkins again contrasts large and small animals for contrast and wonder, "Big and Little" is simply not as fascinating as "Actual Size."

Unlike "Actual Size," "Big and Little" shows most of the animals in their entirety. Once doesn't get the "WOW" factor of looking straight into a close-up of giant squid's eyes or a shark's mouth. Big and Little relies greatly on the contrasting sizes of animal pairs on two-page spread ; for example, a Siberian tiger and a Siamese cat, an ostrich and a hummingbird, a cat shark and a great white shark. While Jenkins uses the cut-paper collages of "Actual Size," he seems more timid here; the animal hides and skins are less textured and the color schemes more conventional. Jenkins again includes brief descriptions of each animal pictured in the book, but they are shorter and not as interesting as in his latter book.

If "Actual Size" had never been written I'd give this a higher rating; with his new book Jenkins has set a higher standard for himself and other writers. The main advantages of "Big and Little" are the lower price and the relatively more simple pictures that may be more comprehensible than "Actual Size" to very young toddlers or infants. Aside from that, I strongly recommend his newer book over this one.

Awesome Introduction to Animals

I bought this book after I became familiar with it while researching books about animals for a class project I am working on. The cut-paper collages are beautiful, and visually stunning. The simple text following the shape of the larger animal adds to the appeal of this book. I think this is a great book for young children to introduce them to animals in general, and also the concept of big and little. I am so glad I bought this book, and I know my own children will enjoy reading it, and I can also use it in my preschool classroom. I know this will be a go to book for a long time to come. I would highly recommend this book!

Best book ever!

This is an excellent book for anyone who loves sharks, especially Megalodon.That person who said that Liopleuridon could snack on him please, Megalodon would have put up the best fight.And when he said that liopleuridons jaws were 13 feet long well their not, their only 10 feet long.Well anyways this is an excellent book, and once you read it you will find out who was the top predator!!!

Makes the Great White Shark Seem Puny

The authors have written an excellent description of Megalodon, the giant shark of about 30 million years ago whom some think may still exist. Describing the species in some detail, especially its skeleton and tooth structure, the narrative truly describes an eating machine, invincible to all in the sea except another Megalodon. They authors are wrong on one point however, the Megalodon is not the largest sea predator ever. That honor belongs to Liepleurodon, a late Jurassic Plesiosaur that had thirteen foot jaws and weighed up to 150 tons. It could have snacked upon Megalodon. In fact, it did hunt sharks.

Well I love this book, why because it's all true.Megalodon was a super huge top predator, of it's time.Megalodon was an excellent predator, with 6 foot long jaws.Megalodon bite strength was 60 tons of pressure per square inch, thats enough to crush a truck.Well anyways this book tells you how big this shark was, and it's super capabilities.Well this is a good book I think the whole world should get it!!!!!

Excellent way to learn trig!

I used this textbook with a high school independent study course that I took through a university. This book taught me more about mathematics than any previous book I have studied.

As I said, I used this book with an independent study program, but it was absolutely no problem learning the material. This book teaches you trigonometry in an easy-to-understand and thorough way. I didn't have a teacher, and I didn't need one with this book.

This book is excellent for learning trigonometry, and a great preparation for calculus. If you want to learn trig, buy this book!

Invitingly scary, this Halloween romp follows the sneaker-clad footsteps of two children as they make their way through a haunted house. Showing only their feet entering or leaving the rooms heightens the atmosphere of suspense. The horrors of each room are briefly but chillingly described, while the scratchy pencil and watercolor illustrations invite close scrutiny. Carefully placed clues belie the house's sinister atmosphere, but not all of the creatures can be explained away, giving the story a pleasing ambiguity. The younger child appears less frightened than the older, who pleads: "I know you're not frightened, but still . . . we could go. No one would notice. 'No,' you say? 'No'?" Read it, love it!

My son and I have read this book over and over and over again. Whether it's Halloween time or not this book will be a sure favorite of kids' who like the dark side. Don't take this to mean that the book is dark or scary. What I mean is that if your kids have a taste for spookies then this book will not fail to please. Great pictures with subtle hidden pictures that show that the spookies and such aren't real in this haunted house. The text is fun to read outloud to the wee ones.

Silly Fun!

My 3 1/2 & 21 month old sons love this book and insist I read it to them evry night before bedtime. The artwork is attention grabbing and the prose has a nice cadence. Of course I throw in my own personal sound effects for the witches, ghosts, werewolf & Frankenstein. This just gets them giggling like crazy. This book is not too scary for the littlest kids, because if you look closely, there's almost always a 'hidden' item which helps explains the 'spooky' stuff. You can point this out as you go along. The surprise ending is quite nice too. I highly reccommend this book for kids 18 months to 5 years.

A remarkably well organised book

Although undeniably written for a younger adolescent audience, this textbook introduces very clearly the principles of the French language that one would find even in a much higher level book such as "Parallèles, Communication et Culture," and is intended for an audience with no background in French. Nearly all French words and phrases are introduced with the English translation upon being first introduced. One aspect of this book that places it among my favourite textbooks is that new vocabulary and grammatical concepts are clearly separated from the main text in individual boxes, allowing one to quickly locate a forgotten word or point of grammar. One should not be discouraged from using this book simply because of the age of its intended audience, because one will not learn "kiddie French" or some such grotesque thing.

Bought this text book for my daughter who is being tutored by a French teacher. My daughter is 12 but this is the same book the tutor uses in her high school French class. Book is easily understandable and great for the beginner. Book shipped as described in great used condition.

A good book to use; but an instructor is a must

I have experience using this book with my French I class, and it really is a good way to start. It provides a large selection of basic vocabulary (much of which I see when attempting to read French news articles, etc, and my own literacy surprises me). It is well-designed, beginning with basic items (meetings and greetings, how to say Hello, How are you?, and so forth), and ending with more obscure items (among the last lessons are indication of position: on, behind, in front of, etc; and adjectives describing people and items). The book is friendly to the eyes, color and illustrations abound. Exercises to reinforce the lesson are plentiful, though for even more extra practice I would suggest purchasing the workbook which accompanies the text. The biggest problem I can see with this book is something that occurs when studying nearly every foreign language (so it shouldn't be taken too hard here): lack of an instructor. Few languages are intuitive, and French sounds can be exceedingly confusing for an Englishperson attempting to learn the language (there are more silent letters than one can count, and things that look one way are pronounced another). This makes a practiced instructor a necessity, and no, tapes don't really work: you must have an interactive person to help correct the tiny accent problems, etc, which occur, and tapes simply cannot respond that way. But, I digress. This is certainly a worthy book, but it's best to wait until you have a class that uses it...in which case you will more than likely be provided with a copy anyway (unless you'd like an extra to keep at home, make markings in, etc).
