Informative, but a little confusing
By H Park
I am currently an eigth grader and am using this book in my school's "challengers" program. I found the book filled with lots of examples on solving polynomials, mixture problems, rational square roots, etc. However, if one does not master the concepts from Chapters 1-6 (this covers everything from factoring plynomials, solving equations and problems, etc.) one will have a hard time understanding new material from Chapter 7 and on.

Thomas Jefferson: Architect of Democracy, by John B. Severance

The words of the Declaration of Independence, so familiar to us and so important to our country, were those of Thomas Jefferson. He was a primary force behind United States independence. Without his influence, our country would be vastly different from the nation we know today. Jefferson initiated public education, established a national library, and paved the way for the abolishment of slavery. Although he was not a power-hungry or even ambitious politician, Jefferson served in many different offices, including president, in order to help his fledgling country remain on its feet. His faith and dedication to the idea of self-government never wavered, even in the face of many personal hardships. John B. Severance traces Jefferson's life from his plantation boyhood to his two terms as president and his last days preparing for the opening of the University of Virginia, weaving details of both Jefferson's political career and his rich personal life together to create a thoughtful and well-researched biography. Jefferson quotes, bibliography, index.

From Publishers Weekly
Severance's (Gandhi: Great Soul) ambitious portrait of America's third president chronicles Jefferson's life and career from his early education through his positions as author of the Declaration of Independence, governor of Virginia, ambassador to France, U.S. vice president and president, and finally as founder of the University of Virginia. Severance makes his gripping subject immediately relevant to modern readers by asserting that the soft-spoken Jefferson (who could barely make himself heard beyond the third row of Congress) would never have been elected in our present era of microphones and television sound bites. Severance is largely successful placing Jefferson in the context of the ideas and personalities of his time, but he sometimes assumes a prior familiarity with American history (e.g., after describing the protest against the 1773 Tea Act, he then uses the term Boston Tea Party without explicitly making a connection between the two). The most powerful passages rely on Jefferson's own words to strengthen this characterization of one of America's valiant proponents of democracy. However, when Jefferson's words and deeds conflict?as in his vehement statements against slavery juxtaposed with his lifelong dependence on slave labor?Severance points out the contradictions but does not analyze the issues. Still, the text encompasses the spectrum of both professional and private life, highlighting Jefferson's less famous roles as a devoted father and grandfather, enterprising architect and methodical scientist. Black-and-white archival prints effectively support the impressive span of events and people. Ages 10-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 7-10-This attractive and thorough biography helps bring life to a visionary forefather. Severance follows Jefferson's career from his school days at William and Mary through his rise in American politics. Throughout the concise and swift-moving narrative, the author integrates aspects of world history and of 18th- and 19th-century cultural, scientific, and literary life that help to place Jefferson within his world. Readers will see how the influences of Locke; principles of the Enlightenment; the impact of the French Revolution; and relationships with Adams, Madison, and Hamilton informed Jefferson's philosophy and shaped his ideas. He is depicted as a curious, creative, brilliant champion of democracy: a crusader for individual rights and education. While one might wish for more information on Jefferson's family and personal life, the emphasis here is on political and military history. A wealth of archival drawings and maps and reproductions illuminate the potentially overwhelming detail of text. Severance places Jefferson's paradoxical views toward slavery-his hopes for emancipation although he was a slaveholder himself-within its historical context. The end result is an energetic account of a humane and dynamic leader.
Jennifer A. Fakolt, Denver Public Library

From Booklist
Gr. 7^-12. In this respectful, literate, and handsomely illustrated biography, Severance focuses equally on Jefferson's remarkable accomplishments and the beliefs behind them, portraying him as the crucial link between Age of Enlightenment philosophers and a new form of government. The author also examines Jefferson's family life and his contradictory record on slavery, but the results here are less than illuminating. There are few quotes from Jefferson's personal diaries or correspondence, which, one hopes, could shed some light on his interior life. In another example of a missed opportunity, Severance repeats the rumors and denials of Jefferson's relationship with his slave Sally Hemings but offers nothing to support or refute them. (Coverage of the campaign in 1800 when those charges first aired, however, is a highlight of the book; modern campaigns pale beside this account of mudslinging and moral recriminations.) All in all, the book will leave readers with a rich understanding of Jefferson's vigorous and highly principled public life. But it also leaves unaddressed questions about who the man, aside from his documents and his deeds, really was. A bibliography, thorough index, and compendium of memorable quotes are appended. Readable book for Middle Schoolers
By Andrea Neal
I am an 8th grade teacher and this is on my summer reading list for incoming students. They get to choose between this and two Albert Marrin books on Washington and Lincoln. This book is the favorite of my students, in part because it is shorter and more readable than the other two. I find it dificult to find exceptional biographies for Middle School readers. They are not ready for adult books, but most of the children's biographies have a target age of 9-12. This is ideal for them, and I enjoyed it as well.

Just like any child, Grace loves to hear stories. For Grace these stories came from her grandma. Once she had heard them she would start reenacting them giving herself the most important parts. (Children will recognize most of the stories and get a kick out of Grace's costumes.)

One day the school teacher told the class that they were going to do the play Peter Pan. Who wanted to be Peter? Why Grace of course! Kids being kids told Grace that she couldn't play the part of Peter because not only was she a girl but she was black! Thankfully her mother and grandmother knew that Grace could be anything she wanted to and thus encouraged her. Read the entire book to see how it ends.

A truly delightful and inspiring, well written and illustrated book. This book was on our son's second grade "Suggested Reading List" so I purchased this USED from Amazon. I was not required to do a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

Distant Feathers, by Tim Egan

When a huge bird from another planet suddenly turns up on Sedrick's roof, he isn't sure what to do with him. It turns out that all Feathers wants is bread, any kind of bread - sesame, wheat, sourdough, pumpernickel - but it takes everyone in town baking all day to provide enough to feed the monstrous bird. They try to get Feathers to earn his keep by lending a hand - or beak, as it were. But he's so large and klutzy that his help usually creates even more problems. Keeping Feathers in bread and out of trouble is starting to be too much for the little town. But when Feathers is swept away by a hurricane, the townspeople, especially Sedrick, mourn his loss. Feathers eventually returns to the town, where he remains, entertaining the folk with stories about his native planet - Earth.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2AOne evening, Sedrick Van Pelt hears a tapping on his study window and discovers an enormous red bird peering in at him. Fleeing in fear, Sedrick stumbles and falls, but the giant creature poses no immediate threat. A visitor from another planet, Feathers loves bread of any kind. In time, however, the villagers grow weary of trying to satisfy his voracious appetite and his clumsiness results in townwide havoc. Only after a hurricane roars through the hamlet and blows him away is he truly missed. Days later, he reappears on Sedrick's roof and happily spends the remainder of his years in the Van Pelt yard, regaling everyone with stories about his home planetAEarth. Aside from the punch line, this tale of an unappreciated visitor never gets off the ground. The flippant conversational tone of the text provides some humor but not enough drama to sustain interest. The unfolding of events is choppy and the action is often illogical. The benign blue villagers with long snouts, pointed ears, and a predilection for jaunty plumed hats hint at an otherworldly setting but are curiously flat. Egan's ink-and-watercolor illustrations vary from full-page to small vignettes; while they provide lots of interesting detail, they are less than compelling. Lacking the clever zaniness of Burnt Toast on Davenport Street (1997) or the pithy lesson of Metropolitan Cow (1996, both Houghton), this newest offering falls in the featherweight category.ACarol Ann Wilson, Westfield Memorial Library, NJ

From Booklist
Ages 5^-8. Egan is known for his wild and wacky picture books, such as Metropolitan Cow (1996). His latest is no less zany. In this story, Sedrick Van Pelt is interrupted from his journal writing by the beak of a giant bird tapping at his window. The huge bird is a bread lover--" Bread. I love bread. Any kind of bread. Pumpernickel, rye, whole wheat, sourdough. Any kind. I absolutely love bread." The rest of the story follows the efforts of Sedrick and the newly named Feathers to get that bread. First, the townspeople feed him, then they get him to work, but always disaster ensues. When a big wind blows Feathers away, the townsfolk think they've seen the last of the big bird, but soon enough that annoying voice is back: "Got any bread? I love bread." The rich ink-and-watercolor art features characters and settings that are diminutive compared with the impressive red bird that is the focus of most of the pictures. The wry story has a happy ending that will satisfy kids, but it is really children older than the story hour set who will best appreciate this tongue-in-beak tale. Ilene Cooper

From Kirkus Reviews
Egan's dry-as-tinder, cornball humor reverberates through his latest tale of strange doings in a small town. The setting is a quaint, half-timbered village, the citizenry all long-eared, long-snouted blue hippo-like creatures, and the protagonist is Feathers, a colossal parrot who drops in one day, literally, from space. Sedrick Van Pelt is the first to make contact with the giant bird, who has a bottomless hunger``Bread. I love bread. Any kind of bread. Pumpernickel, rye, whole wheat, sourdough. Any kind''as well as a stumbling, bumbling manner that reduces certain structures in the village to rubble. Baking bread and lots of it, constantly mending their battered dwellings, the townsfolk get a little tired of the admittedly good-natured Feathers. When a hurricane sweeps Feathers away, the townsfolk demonstrate a form of grief: ``He had become a wonderful, if somewhat destructive, part of their lives, and they missed him very much.'' In the last couple of pages, Egan (Burnt Toast on Davenport Street, 1997, etc.) turns the story on its head, all very smoothly and convincingly: He will elicit smiles from listeners. The riffs on (and great fondness for) human foibles are magnified and made poignant by the daintily lumbering residents; the little burgs of the transporting artwork are welcoming idylls. Me First (Sandpiper paperbacks), by Helen Lester

Being first isn't always best, as Pinkerton Pig finds out after an encounter with a mean Sand Witch. As always, Helen Lester's wonderfully offbeat humor and Lynn Munsinger's whimsical illustrations result in a hilarious lesson about piggishness. The picture book duo of Lester and Munsinger has created six previous books, including the award-winning TACKY THE PENGUIN.

From Publishers Weekly
In another successful joint effort, the creators of Tacky the Penguin and Pookins Gets Her Way introduce a memorable character--a plump, delightfully expressive pig named Pinkerton, who always insists on being first, "even if it meant bouncing off bellies, stepping on snouts, or tying tails." When Pinkerton's Pig Scout troop goes to the beach, Munsinger's hilarious, whimsical art shows the pushy fellow (wearing pink-and-white dotted trunks, an inflatable tube and goggles) stepping on the heads of two pals to be "first out of the water, and first into the picnic basket." But when the piggy Pinkerton rushes across the beach to respond to an alluring question ("Who would care for a sandwich?") he gets a well-deserved comeuppance, for he is pressed into service by a tiny Sandwitch who needs someone to take care of her. This funny, fetching tale will bring chuckles--and a lesson--to any child with a tendency to echo Pinkerton's cries of "Me first." Ages 4-up.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 3-- A funny story about a child (in this case a young pig) still in the egocentric stage. Pinkerton is pushy. He is the first one on the bus, the first one in the water, and the first one down the slide. He is leading his Pig Scout troup one day when he hears a voice ask, : `` `. . . Who would care for a sandwich?' '' Pinkerton then learns that first is not always best, because he must take care of a demanding Sandwitch (doing her dishes, telling her a bedtime story, etc.). From the opening description of Pinkerton as ``pink, plump, and pushy,'' to the many labors he must endure, the tale is filled with humor. The pictures are replete with action, and the expressive watercolors greatly enhance the comedy. Sure to be both popular and useful, this is Lester and Munsinger's best collaboration to date. --George Delalis, Oakland Pub. Lib

GREAT FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS!!
By Esther Ortiz
Talk about a twist and turn of events! My first graders loved this book. It teaches children that being first is not always best. I use it now whenever my first graders fight to be first in line. We all yell out, "Don't be a Pinkerton!" and in a gentle humorous way the "pusher of the line" concedes. It is also a great book for a follow up discussion on homophones. When you read this book, you'll know what I'm talking about. You see, Pinkerton wants to be first when he hears someone offering a "sandwich" but it turns out to be a Sand Witch who makes him realize his selfishness. It is an adorable book and voted one of the top five in my classroom!

This book is a must for every child.
By A Customer
Although we have bought, borrowed, and checked out (from the library) many, many books for our children, this is one of our all-time favorites. My wife and I have never read a better book for teaching children (and their parents) that being first is not always best.
The message is conveyed through the experience of Pinkerton, the "pink, plump and pushy pig" in terrific fashion. The illustrations are great for kids as is the entertaining (but educational) story line.
This book has become a classic for our family. In fact, although we don't buy that many books (usually we check them out from the library), we wouldn't be without our own copy. We even make it a habit to buy it for our friends and family with little "Pinkertons" of their own.
Don't miss this one, it's great.

A Moral with a Chuckle!
By Debbie McNeil
Like all of Lester's books, Me First imparts an important lesson for primary aged children without being preachy or condescending. Her clever use of the English language and humor make it just as enjoyable for the reader as the read-ee!

From School Library Journal
Grade 6 Up?A worthy sequel to Shakespeare Stories (Houghton, 1991). The first volume covered 12 plays, primarily the more familiar. This one has only nine, and several are unusual fare for young readers. They have mature and often jaded perspectives, which, if not incomprehensible to adolescents, we can hope might seem a bit remote. But Antony and Cleopatra is an interesting follow-up to Julius Caesar; Measure for Measure offers complex fare for morality discussions; and the peculiar magical aspects of Winter's Tale offer an interesting contrast to The Tempest. Reading such enriched retellings of plays students might miss in high school will enhance those they do study. For the guaranteed curriculum basics, such as Julius Caesar, here is an alternative to yellow study guides, one in which explication is subliminally available in the graceful prose. The romances are appealing, and Garfield's seamless movement between his own descriptive language and Shakespeare's has never worked better. Foreman's vibrant watercolors, particularly the mesmerizing Cleopatra cover girl and an anguished Julius Caesar at the Capitol, and the many small ink-wash illustrations bring strong visual appeal to a pending classic?one that adults should not assume is just for kids.?Sally Margolis, Deerfield Public Library,

Gr. 6^-10. In the format of his Shakespeare Stories (1985), Garfield retells the plots of nine more Shakespearean plays in graceful prose, studded with dialogue. While the first volume included more familiar plays, this one presents Much Ado about Nothing, Julius Caesar, Antony and Cleopatra, Measure for Measure, As You Like It, Cymbeline, King Richard the Third, The Comedy of Errors, and The Winter's Tale. Foreman contributes dozens of illustrations, from colorplates to smaller line-and-wash paintings reproduced in shades of gray. A handsome companion volume to the earlier book. Carolyn Phelan

Featuring; Much Ado about nothing; Julius Caesar; Antony and Cleopatra; Measure for Measure; As you like it; Cymbeline; Richard III; Comedy of Errors and Winter's Tale. As in the first volume, Garfieldintroduces the younger reader to Shakespeare by a skilful weaving of phrases from the original into his re-telling. And the illustrations, particularly the color plates, really bring the whole thing to life

Shakespeare Stories
By lovely monsters
This is the second book in a series of Shakespeare stories for younger children. I have both books at my house that I keep for my Grandchildren to read and bought my Granddaughter both books for her own library when she was 10. It is a great way for the younger age child to be introduced to Shakespeare and helps the child's interest to want to read Shakespeare's plays when they get older. Enjoyable and reader-friendly to the younger reading set.

Leon Garfield's Shakespeare Stories II (and I, too)
By Debbie F
Garfield knows how to retell Shakespeare's stories, include some original dialogue, and not be boring. Great way to intoduce children to Shakespeare. This also goes great with his Shakespeare: the Animated Tales on dvd.

Strong Study of the Old South
By Eric Mayforth
Volumes in the "Major Problems in American History" series are designed as college textbooks, but also have much to offer the general reader who wishes to do an in-depth study of a given time period, region, or aspect of American history.

This collection of essays by professional historians and original source documents examines the history of the South from colonial times through the Revolution, the antebellum period, the sectional crisis and secession, the Civil War, and ends with Reconstruction.

Many aspects of Southern life are studied, including religion, agriculture, politics, slavery and emancipation, and relations between the sexes, races, and different social classes.

Those who hope to learn more about the pre-1877 South would find this book very rewarding.

From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 2-In this unabridged recording about the curious little monkey, George and the man with the yellow hat stop at a chocolate store. George becomes curious about how chocolates are made and joins a tour of the factory. He is soon off on his own to investigate and, of course, mischief ensues. This lively retelling reflects George's adventure nicely and is accompanied by synthesized music and some sound effects. Side one of the tape includes page-turning signals, while side two contains an uninterrupted reading. The accompanying book (HM, 1998) is "written and illustrated in the style of Margret and H.A. Rey," and features the art of Vipah Interactive, the animators of the Curious George CD-ROMs. This book and tape set would be a popular purchase for school and public libraries.

About the Author

Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in numerous languages. And many, many Curious George books have followed.

From AudioFile
Imagine what fun Curious George (who's been getting into trouble for over 50 years now) can have inside a chocolate factory! Narrator George Capaccio capitalizes on the potential for entertainment (he's especially enthusiastic about the different varieties of chocolates) while maintaining a well-paced, straightforward reading. This approach works well because there's a lot going on here besides his narration: Jazzy music speeds up as the story's pace quickens, and light background noises represent the candy machine at work. At first, these machine noises puzzle the listening adult (it sounds as if the story was produced in a parking lot), but kids are unlikely to notice. The biggest complaint you'll get from them is that this story makes them hungry! J.C.G. © AudioFile 2003, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

People, It's a children's book
By David Michael Cohen
Nothing is sacred to the spectre of political correctness, so the negative reviews of "Curious George" shouldn't surprise me. The reviews likening George's story to the African slave trade are particularly puzzling: children do not think in those terms. I suggest that the folks who complain that it glorifies illegal animal trade read it more closely. George makes a lot of innocent mistakes, he doesn't mean to be bad, but the world is too fascinating for him to resist. He needs to have an authority figure looking out for him, and although he does try to get around the authority figure everyone knows the man with the yellow hat will save George from himself in the end. Yes, George is a monkey, but he is also a metophor for children everywhere. Every child in the world can relate to George, and that is why the books have remained popular for so long.
I loved Curious George as a child, and I am happy that my children love them as much as I do. If any book in the 4-8 age bracket deserves 5 stars it is Curious George.

illegible type
By Amanda J
[[VIDEOID:mo2BC8LLI8IYM0]]I should have read the other reviews for the other Curious George kindle books. the type is illegible. Below the illegible type from the book, they have the text typed out. The pages repeat -- there are sometimes multiple pages from the book on one page in the ipad, and then each page is repeated again since the type is too small and blurry to read it the way they have scanned the book in -- and then the text is actually typed out on a page that does not match the picture. It's confusing. I want my 87 cents back.

My Whole Family Loves This Book
By L. Lee
This story is delightful. We bought it because we were taking our 2.5 yr old along on a ski trip and wanted him to have a silly little story that related to the mountain and skiing (even though he's not on skis yet). Well, it is just that... and more. He's learned a lot, developed an interest in skiing (maybe next year) and always gets a good laugh out of this book! It's also fun that George seems to invent snowboarding - my husband and I got a big kick out of that and have shared the story with many adult friends (isn't everyone a Curious Geroge fan?)!

IMPORTANT: The structure of the story and the illustrations maintain the integrity of the original series!!
