Excellent recordings - but hard to self-test
By Marcus Peacock
I decided to get serious about learning bird song for the Eastern US but had a hard time figuring out which CD to buy. What I found was no one CD does it all, they all have pros and cons. I ended up with 4 CDs -- and a DVD. Below is my take on them. In the end, while it took a bit of persistence, learning bird song has been an extremely rewarding experience, adding a new dimension to any walk.

I started with Feith's Bird Song Ear Training Guide: Who Cooks for Poor Sam Peabody? Learn to Recognize the Songs of Birds from the Midwest and Northeast States (1 CD). The big advantage of this CD is that it gives the song/call first, and then identifies it. So you can download the clips to an iPod, set it on random, and constantly test yourself. It covers 189 species, which is a lot. Finally, the narrator has a pleasant voice and often gives mnemonic suggestions (e.g., "Over here dear" for the Baltimore Oriole). This CD has two big disadvantages. First, many of the songs/calls are very short (many less than a few seconds). Second, there are very few songs/calls given for each bird (usually only one or two). In retrospect, they simply tried to cram too many birds onto one CD. These two defects greatly undercut the value of an otherwise good disk. Also, the birds are coupled so that if you download clips and try and randomize them you will always get the same two birds paired in the same order (the birds are ordered by alphabet). This makes it hard to learn the second birds based solely on the song of the bird - the Turkey always comes after the Towhee.

A friend gave me the product on this page: Elliott and Read's "Common Birds and Their Songs." In contrast to "Bird Song Ear Training Guide" this disk provides a variety of lengthy high quality songs/calls for each bird. It pretty thoroughly covers 50 of the most common birds. It also comes with a glossy softcover book with great pictures and informative one page write-ups. I have a few problems with this disk. First, the bird is identified before each call, so it's hard to test yourself. Second, I'm sure Lang Elliott is a very nice man, but he doesn't have the most sonorous voice. Finally, the audio CD does not provide any mnemonics and there are only a few in the book.

Another friend gave me Elliott's Know Your Bird Sounds, Volume 1: Yard, Garden, and City Birds. This is similar to "Common Birds and Their Songs" but only covers 35 birds (as opposed to 50) although some are not included in "Common Birds." It also comes with a book with nice photographs but has less information on the birds and just focuses on describing their songs. The CD includes more information on the bird song than "Common Birds" (Elliott essentially reads the book) but has the same drawbacks; mainly, it identifies the bird before the song.

Having read that it greatly helps to simultaneously see and hear a bird singing its song, I purchased Feith's DVD Birds, Birds, Birds! An Indoor Birdwatching Field Trip DVD Video Bird and Bird Song Guide. This was a disappointment. In general it is the "Bird Song Ear Training Guide" CD (see above) matched up with still photographs and occasional video footage of the appropriate bird. It includes about a dozen more birds than the CD and can be arranged by "sound alikes" and set up to give one a quiz, but the drawbacks that undercut the CD - the brevity of the songs and lack of diversity of calls per bird - undercut the DVD. If you want to look at a bird while you hear its song, consider buying one of Elliott's CD/book combinations, like the one on this page.

Having made progress but still unsatisfied, I finally broke down and bought Walton and Lawson's Birding by Ear: Eastern and Central North America (Peterson Field Guides(R)). It is a nice combination of lots of birds (about 85) with a long and diverse set of song/calls for each. The birds are also categorized by the similarity of song, which I found a helpful learning device. It comes with a paper pamphlet giving a very short description of each bird and a nice list of mnemonics at the back. The CD gives a fair amount of information along with the songs and is easy to listen to. The biggest drawbacks are the birds are identified before the song (although there are some quizzes arranged by habitat that compensate for this somewhat) and the clips go on for so long, due to the narration and groupings, that you can't easily download them onto an iPod and test yourself. I guess nothing is perfect.

Alien and wild, the far north has the powerful allure of the unknown, a call explorers have heeded for hundreds of years. First came the search for a route through the polar icecap to the rich lands of Asia. The Northeast and Northwest Passages were painstakingly traced. Then the race was on to one of the remotest points on earth - the North Pole. The desire for knowledge, wealth, adventure, and fame fueled expedition after expedition. Some Arctic explorers met with success and celebrity; others found madness and death; a few simply disappeared. Into the Ice, graced with majestic acrylic paintings, traces the slow unveiling of the secrets of this mysterious and forbidding frozen region.

Grade 4-7AAn attractive, readable compilation of arctic exploration from the earliest recorded voyage by Pytheas of Greece (around 330 B.C.) to the end of the so-called "classic era" of exploration in the early 1900s (with some notes on later efforts). This handsome, slender volume provides a clear introduction to the multifaceted variety of arctic explorers and the diverse motivations for their dangerousAand often fatalAjourneys into this forbidding, hostile environment. From Kirkus Reviews
From Curlee (Ships of the Air, 1996, etc.), a riveting history of Arctic exploration that begins, appropriately, with the Inuit, who moved into that bleak and treacherous land after the Ice Age. With little documented history of that period, the narrative plunges ahead to the stories of Pytheas, a Greek merchant of the fourth century b.c., and Saint Brendan, the Irish monk who plied the North Atlantic waters in an oxhide boat in a.d. 550, discovering icebergs and perhaps Iceland. Next came the Norsemen on their way to Vinland in North America around a.d. 1000, followed by the late 16th-century English and Dutch explorers hoping to reach China (including John Davis and his ships Sunneshine and Mooneshine). Curlee chronicles the efforts of the merchants and whalers, the labors for fortune and glory, the search for the northern passages, the misery of scurvy and arctic fever. He dwells on Fridtjof Nansen's efforts, highlights the 1845 disappearance of Sir John Franklin's party, and provides a balanced look at the quest for the North Pole featuring Peary and Cook and their vainglorious (and unwarranted) claims. Curlee rounds out this entertaining, informed history with unsensationalized episodes of cannibalism and toes snapping off to keep readers glued to the pages, and hypnotic, elemental paintings that are just as exquisite as those in his first book. A mouse? In the Park Snoot Hotel? It cannot be! Each member of the hotel staff -- from the concierge to the chef to the ballroom orchestra leader -- misses the playful fellow as he scampers through the posh hotel, right under their noses! Sir Horace Morris, the world famous explorer, doesn't see him hiding. "No, no, no, there is no mouse here -- definitely not!" declares Madame Eevah Deevah, the opera star who lives in the penthouse. Even Hyde and Snide, mouse catchers extraordinaire, cannot find him. Can you?

From Publishers Weekly
"What a scandal! What a calamity!" Someone has spotted a mouse in the ultra-chic Park Snoot Hotel. Everyone else says it ain't so. Says Simon the doorman, "Do you see a mouse? I do not see a mouse"-a refrain echoed by other hotel employees and guests. Delighted youngsters, however, will squeal "Yes!" as they spy the mouse on the subsequent pages of this predictable yet engaging tale by the creator of the Lyle Crocodile books. The mouse can be seen riding atop a pile of luggage on the bellman's cart, nibbling a piece of cheese in the kitchen, peeking out from a napkin on a waiter's tray, helping the conductor direct the hotel orchestra, etc. Though the hotel owner, too, denies the existence of the rodent, he decides to put everyone's mind at ease and hires the world's foremost mouse-catchers to "look into this beastly matter." In lively slapstick style, Waber shows the debonair mouse looking on as the identically mustachioed, bowler-hatted Hyde and Snide search high and low, finally certifying (and double certifying) that there is no mouse in the hotel. Even more than his lighthearted text, Waber's droll cartoon art delivers the humor here. Ages 4-8.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 2?When a mouse is spotted at the highbrow Park Snoot Hotel, all of the employees and guests emphatically deny its existence. But, just to put everyone's mind at ease, the exterminator team of Hyde and Snide is brought in, and then the fun really begins. Very easy to read, with lots of repetition ("Do you see a mouse? I do not see a mouse"), the book is ideal for beginning readers, who will love their own miniature, less complicated version of "Waldo." The uncluttered pictures with lots of white space make finding the endearing rodent challenging but not frustrating, and are a perfect accompaniment to the simple text. The adult characters are amusing in their denial of the presence of varmint, but it's the impish little mouse who steals the show here.?Trev Jones, School Library Journal

From Booklist
Ages 4^-6. Someone at the Park Snoot Hotel saw a mouse, but everyone--from the doorman to the hotel owner--insists it isn't so. Still, renowned mouse catchers Hyde and Snide are called to "look into this beastly matter." Despite their best efforts, however, they come up short. Children, on the other hand, won't have to look too hard to find the pesky mouse, who manages to appear in almost all the humorous cartoon illustrations. The first half of the story is too repetitious (15 characters repeat the same three sentences), but with the addition of Hyde and Snide, the second half picks up nicely. Children will enjoy looking for the mouse, though the creature is so tiny in the pictures that the book won't work well in a group story time. Lauren Peterson

A sly mouse outwits the staff at the Park Snoot Hotel
By A Customer
This is a wonderful book for children ages 2+. A sly mouse hides under the nose of one hotel staff member after another, then bests the "upscale exterminators" Hyde & Snyde.
My 4 year old loves finding the "hidden" mouse again and again, making this a top-ten bedtime story that never seems to get old.
Cute illustrations.

Whole family loves this book
By A Customer
My 3-year-old loves this book. Your child can find the mouse in the lovely drawings of the various areas of the hotel. And the story is wonderful: when a mouse shows up at a snooty hotel, the staff "solves" the problem by hiring a consulting firm that can't find the mouse and gets everyone to chant "there's no mouse here." Even the mouse joins in. (Kind of like real life in the business consulting world, but more fun!) We enjoy reading this book, too, because you can "play" the various characters with dramatic flare.

cute book
By Holley B.
This is a cute book for a pre-schooler as it has an imaginative text and asks the reader to participate by looking for a mouse hidden in the illustrations on each page. The characters are diverse and encourage discussion (what is a concierge, bellman, chef, opera singer, etc.). Each page provides an opportunity for learning.

On the Wings of Peace: Writers and Illustrators Speak Out for Peace, in Memory of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, by Sheila Hamanaka

To commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, fifty-eight writers and illustrators have donated prose, poetry, and artwork that deal with the proposition of peace - from the day-to-day issues of personal and community violence to international conflict. Some of the contributors are Leo and Diane Dillon, Walter Dean Myers, Kioko Mori, Katherine Paterson, Jerry Pinkney, Milton Meltzer, Paul Morin, and Wendell Minor. Children of today face the greatest challenge humanity has ever known: creating a world in which every man, woman, and child has the opportunity to live in peace. Throughout history, war has been the method of choice to resolve arguments over borders, injustices, ideologies, religions, and numerous other passionately held beliefs. The heroes of history have been the brave men and women who have risked their lives to fight their countries' battles. Events of the twentieth century have brought changes that now make going to war, for any reason, obsolete. The heroes of the twenty-first century will be men and women who find alternatives to war. These people are children today.

From Publishers Weekly
Dedicated to the memory of those who perished when atomic bombs fell on Hiroshima and Nagasaki half a century ago, this poignant, hardhitting book collects the work of more than 60 noted writers and artists who, mostly through depictions of war, underscore the world's acute need for peace. A number of the entries tie into the devastating bombings of 1945, including Greg Mitchell's crisp if rather dry account of the origins of the Pacific war and nuclear physicist Michio Kaku's searing projection of what would happen if a hydrogen bomb were dropped on the Empire State Building. Other memorable selections include Joseph Bruchac's "Rabbit Foot," involving five warring Native American nations, and Katherine Paterson's "The Grandmother with Her Own Bomb," a true story about a bomb that falls through the roof of a Russian woman's house. Unfortunately, the biased note accompanying "Come Back, Palestine, Come Back" ("Due to wars in 1956, 1967, 1973, and 1982, Jews took territories from Arabs and created large refugee populations") undermines the pacifist cause. Jerry Pinkney, Wendell Minor, Peter Catalanotto and Keiko Narahashi are among the distinguished artists included here. Ages 11-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4 Up?A memorable collection of art and writings dedicated to the people who died in Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. The book is diverse in every sense, representing varied literary and pictorial forms from a distinguished global assemblage of 60 authors and illustrators. Katherine Paterson tells of a Russian woman who failed for 43 years to convince the authorities that she had an unexploded bomb under her bed. Walter Dean Myers's poem, "To a Child of War," addresses contemporary urban America. Historian Greg Mitchell gives background on World War II in the Pacific. Nuclear physicist Michio Kaku writes that Einstein's "...famous equation, E=mc2, explains not only the nuclear furnace that lights up the stars; it also may someday be etched on the tombstone of the human race." In Japanese American Ken Mochizuki's story, he dreads school every December 7th and tells of meeting his uncle, a scarred victim of Hiroshima. There is an agenda here?peace and nuclear nonproliferation?but it manages to be edifying without being preachy. Not every piece is of equal distinction; lamentably, the cover art looks inappropriately young for the intended audience. Nonetheless, this is an important and powerful book, filled with stunning and varied artistic visions and provocative voices.?Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Greenwich, CT

Gr. 6^-12. Don't let the picture-book format fool you. On the Wings of Peace is a hard-hitting, thoughtful book about war--all wars--and its effect on the human spirit, especially our children's. Sixty authors and illustrators have donated their work to create this book, the proceeds of which will go to benefit three international peace organizations. This beautiful, yet sobering book, focusing heavily on World War II but featuring selections concerned with more contemporary wars as well, has been crafted by the well-known and the less famous, people of all colors and nationalities. Poetry, letters, short stories, and essays, interspersed with haunting artwork, combine to form one clear and poignant message: war is hell. Frances Bradburn

A Book About Bullying Before It was Fashionable!
By Sylviastel
I have to admit that I enjoy Robert Cormier's other novels like "Fade" more than I like his classic, "The Chocolate War." This book is about an all boys Catholic school where Jerry goes to school. Even in a private parochial school, he has to tolerate the bullies and cliques. There is even homophobia used to intimidate him and others who don't follow the crowd.

This book is a classic because it is about bullying and the systematic dynamic in groups like that in school. Cormier is usually dark and he is here but reserved and restrained from his other works. I find Cormier's writing to be bold, shocking, and enlightening all at once. Except I didn't find that here, maybe that is why this book is more popularly used in school curriculums. Students and younger readers will relate to Jerry and his experiences at school.

This book is probably in the middle school curriculum for approved reading. It's fine book but lacks the passion that I found in his other novels.

This book edition also features related readings to better relate the reader to the text.

The following related readings are listed below:

"I Took My Power In My Hand" poem by Emily Dickinson.

"Some Opposites of Good" short story by Leslie Norris.

"It's Fun Being in Power" interview of a gang leader's philosophy by Maria Hinojosa.

"Breaking Bones" poem by Philip Cioffari.

"White Places" short story by Mary Flanagan.

"Bad Company" essay by Rebecca Barry.

Review
"Big, splendidly researched history." Time Magazine

From the Back Cover
This is the story of the so-called Inland Empire of the Northwest, that rugged and majestic region bounded east and west by the Cascades and the Rockies, from the time of the great exploration of Lewis and Clark to the tragic defeat of Chief Joseph in 1877. And at the center of this history - perhaps even more relevant today than at the original publication of this classic volume - is the confrontation of the Indian and non-Indian during this nation's, and this region's, formative period. Heroic characters and dramatic events abound here. Explorers, fur traders, miners, settlers, missionaries, ranchers, and above all a unique succession of Indian chiefs and their tribespeople bring into focus one of the permanently instructive chapters in the history of the American west.

Authoritative, essential, heart-rending
By Michael Knoll
The appalling treatment of the Nez Perces is a sordid and shameful chapter in the modern history of the Pacific Northwest. Mr. Josephy carefully and meticulously describes the downfall of this peaceful and friendly people. His account begins slowly, but it accelerates with the momentum of a huge steam engine and thunders to a climax that left me in tears.

More About the Nez Perce, Less About the Missionaries Please
By Guild Fish
Really I would rate this book at 4 ½ stars if Amazon would let us. It is a good book, but, at least for me, it does not quite make it to 5. I felt a little too much time was spent on the history of the missionaries sent to the Nez Perce lands. I do realize though that this was an important event that caused a rift in the tribe, so it needed to be covered. When I was reading the bits about the lives of the missionaries, the book started to bog down. I was more interested in learning about the Nez Perce than the settlers. Other than that, I thought the book was good, and well written. I will definitely be reading more on the Nez Perce in the future!

The single best work on the Nez Perce
By Kenneth Burchell
Easily the single best work not only on the Nez Perce tribe but on Pacific Northwest and Inland Plateau history in general. Detailed, well-documented and interestingly narrated accounts of the Western fur trade, Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery, the Whitman and Spalding missions (not to mention Eels, Walkers, Jason Lee and many others), the Walla Walla Treaty, Catholic Missions, Kamiakin, Qualchan, Peo Peo Mox Mox, Isaace Stevens, Capt. John Mullen, Chief Joseph, Looking Glass and the entire expanse of Northwest history. Some very fine illustrations and photos included. This is the single indispensable work on the subject.

In this companion story to the award-winning "Stepping on the Cracks," tough-talking Gordy Smith comes to grips with the fear that he'll turn out no better than his abusive father.

From Publishers Weekly
As World War II rages in Europe, there are battles closer to home for sixth-grader Gordy, even after his physically and verbally abusive, alcoholic father is put behind bars. Gordy knows his family is a mess?as readers of Stepping on the Cracks will remember, his four younger siblings are like "puppies nobody'd bothered to train," one of his older brothers has deserted the Army, and his mother has become "dull and vacant." Still, the feisty protagonist is quick to defend them in front of his prim (and wealthy) grandmother when the family moves from Maryland into her house in North Carolina. Before long Gordy wonders if the new clothes and regular meals provided by his grandmother are enough to change his life?especially when his mother decides to give her husband a second chance. While some elements of the plot are predictable if not overdramatized, the complex characterizations, period setting and Gordy's brave attempts to break a cycle of violence will hold readers' interest. Ages 10-14.

From School Library Journal
Grade 4-6-Sixth-grader Gordy Smith flees College Park, MD, with his mother and younger siblings to escape an abusive, alcoholic father, seeking refuge with his affluent maternal grandmother in Grandville, NC. Always an outsider, the boy protects himself from rejection with a veneer of insolence and pugnacity, bragging about his brother Donny who is fighting the Nazis in Germany. He jeopardizes his only friendship when he tries a dangerous experiment to get the boy, a fatherless polio victim, to walk. Donny's return from the war brings further disillusionment when the young man shares his horrible experiences and falls short of Gordy's expectations of a conquering hero. When their father arrives to reclaim his family, Gordy refuses to fall back into the old pattern of violence, choosing instead the uncertain security of remaining with his grandmother. The story is absorbing and, for the most part, believable, and details of the period are accurate. But Gordy's first-person narrative renders characterization incomplete, and readers are left with some stereotypes, particularly of the boy's parents. The writing is uneven, and particularly jarring is the repetition of the phrase "the old man" (as Gordy calls his father) as often as seven times on one page. References to Gordy's brother Stu raise questions that are unresolved here. Readers of Hahn's Stepping on the Cracks (Clarion, 1991), a companion to this book, do know Stu's fate, however, and will be interested in Gordy's story despite its flaws.

From Kirkus Reviews
For as long as he can remember, Gordy and the other members of his family have been routinely beaten bloody by his alcoholic father. In fact, his father is in jail for beating one brother, now hospitalized. Mama, unable to support the family alone, takes the family to Grandma's house in North Carolina, where Gordy--a tough kid who brawls, curses, and scorns school--meets his match; Grandma will brook none of Gordy's sass. Outside her house he's as obnoxious as ever until he meets William, wheelchair-bound from polio. The boys soon become good friends, until Gordy's well-intentioned plan to force William to walk results in William's mother taking him away. Can things get worse? They can--Daddy is out of jail and Mama, a born victim, is ready to rejoin him. Gordy knows he'll never be happy at Grandma's, but the alternative is worse. As Grandma slowly begins to breach Gordy's carefully constructed walls of toughness and bluster, he starts to realize that he's where he belongs. William returns, with leg braces and crutches, but without the wheelchair, an improvement credited to Gordy. A cast of unforgettable characters inhabit this work, seasoned with WW II setting but utterly contemporary in its concerns. Hahn is in top form, proving through Gordy's first-person narration that real love can triumph over all kinds of adversity, and often does. (Fiction. 10-14) -- Copyright ©1996, Kirkus Associates, LP. This is a book no one should miss.

Wow. Have you ever read a book so good that you don't know how to start too describe it? That's how I feel. I guess I won't tell you what this book is about, you can read the synopsis for that. I will tell you, though, that this book draws you from the first chapter. It is better if you read it's companion, Stepping on the Cracks first. While I was reading this book I got up for something and found myself feeling grateful that I was living in a stable household, with a stable family, unlike Gordy. That's how touching this book is. I want to be a writer when I'm older, and I hope my books touch others like this book touched me.

Following In My Own Footsteps
By Sunni
This book was awesome. It was set in the time of World War two
and the details of this book grabs you into the story, and you dont want to put it down. It gives the mind to think of the other people in the world who do get abused like the family in this book. It also gives a bit of history about the president Roosevelt and how the war began/ended. This book is a must read book to anyone who come across it.

Gordy was in 6th gradewhen he moved away from Colledge Hill.He moved because his father went to jail for beating him.so,they moved away from Colledge Hill. They moved to Grandville to live with their Grandma. At Grandma's Gordy learns how to be nice.I liked it,i think you will to. Following My Own Footsteps reminds me of Tallahasee Higgens, another book M.D.Hahns.The likeness is they both move to reletives.I give it 4 stars(on a scale of 1-5)There's alot of cussing.
