Forced to travel far out of the city to look for work, Mike and Mary Anne find themselves in the little town of Popperville. Mike and Mary Anne make a bid to dig the cellar for the new town hall, promising the town that if they can't dig the cellar in just one day they'll accept no payment for the job. Will Mike and Mary Anne be able to complete the job? The whole town of Popperville turns out to watch. The Board Book took out the plot

I hate to give this such a low rating, but before you buy the board book edition you need to know that it isn't just shortened, but the whole plot is gone.

Yes Henry B Swap is mentioned, but no mention of a challenge to dig the cellar in one day, or he won't get paid.

No sun high in the sky and being halfway done.

No Henry B Swap saying that since the steam shovel can't get out they don't get paid.

No ending where Henry B. Swap sits in the cellar and smiles in a way that's not mean at all.

If you want the great story, DON'T BUY THE BOARD BOOK!

Mulligan an all time classic.

When I was growing up, I don't think there was any story I requested more than Mike Mulligan and his Steam Shovel.I have fond memories of my grandfather reading it to me again and again.
The easy to remember and recite text, and the early 40s middle America drawings combine to create an evocative time piece.
I believe this is one book that will cut past the computer generated entertainment for today's youngsters, and prove to be a classic in generations to come.
If parents don't buy this for their kids, then I hope they'll buy it for themselves.

How I dreaded those nights............

Yes, its true -- I dreaded the nights (night after night after night) when one of my sons would insist we read this book! Why? Because it's long, and detailed -- good for the child, terrible for a weary parent. My boys memorized the story, and if I ever tried to skip a page, I was found out and the missing page was revisited.
This book is a great gift to give to any child who is enthralled with heavy machinery, but there's more to it than that. At the time the story is written (1939) Mike Mulligan and Mary Anne, his steam shovel, are becoming outdated. They used to be busy in the big city, making basements for big buildings. But as always happens, something better - faster, more efficient gas, electric and Diesel shovels - is replacing them.
Mike Mulligan knows they still have value. He's always told people that Mary Anne could dig as much in a day as a hundred men could dig in a week, though he's never been quite sure this is true.
To find work, he ventures into the country to the town of Popperville, where a new Town Hall is being built. Mike promises to build the cellar in just one day ("What!" said Henry B. Swap. "Dig a cellar in just one day! It would take a hundred men at least a week to dig the cellar for our new town hall." ) Henry and the townpeople are swayed when Mike promises that "If we can't do it, you won't have to pay."
The citizens of Bangerville and Bopperville, Kipperville and Kopperville plus all the people from Popperville come out to watch Mike and Mary Anne work hard under the hot sun. They finish the job as the sun sets, just in the nick of time.
One small boy has been watching them, and he asks a really good question - "How are they going to get out?" Mike was in such a hurry, he forgot to make a way to get Mary Anne out of the cellar.
Everyone tries to think of a solution, but it's that astute little boy who comes up with the best one. They decide to keep the Steam Shovel in the cellar, and build the town hall over them. Mike Mulligan can be the janitor, the steam shovel will keep the building warm in the winter, they won't have to buy a new furnace (Henry B. Swap really likes this frugal thought!) and everyone is happy.
The kids who read it especially like looking at all the tiny details in the pictures, but I think they especially like the small boy finding the solution that none of the adults can figure out.
In retrospect, I suppose it really wasn't that awful to have to read it again and again and again. I've got the original hardcover in hand, waiting for the grandkids!
Definitely worth buying the hardcover edition!

This is a good book to read in addition to "becoming a person." Reading these books will give you insight and ideas as well as refreshing your perception and making you feel great! I found Carl Rogers to elaborate many of the themes that I felt rising up in me while I sat through countless University lectures in Psychology. Rogers also deals with the future of education, and it's plain to see that Universities still have much work to do in this arena, work which they desperately need to undertake. Buy this book!

Neither saint nor hero nor villain, Fat Marcel endures the WWII German occupation of his rural French village with boyish spirits. He and his older brothers are hungrier than usual and they don't especially like the Jewish woman and her daughter who are staying at their home, but they continue their pranks, especially their favorite game of trying to con one another into believing elaborate lies. Nothing is black-and-white: Maman has her prejudices ("The Jews... are different"), and Marcel has to use his skills at lying to cover up his friendship with a young German soldier, which he continues even after the family's Jewish guests disappear in a roundup. Maguire (Oasis) develops his characters and setting with such insight and vigor that readers will not see just how carefully he sets up the monumental surprise in store for MarcelAeven though there's clearly a lesson about heroism in the offing, the story gives few hints of where it will be found. A frame story, in which some Florida schoolgirls write to the now-grown Marcel as part of a homework assignment, gets the book off to a jangly, slang-filled start (and serves as a self-congratulatory conclusion), but it doesn't interfere with the otherwise robust narrative. Grade 4-7-Three girls doing a school assignment on World War II write a letter to an artist they've seen on TV when they learn he grew up in the Loire Valley of France during the war. Marcel Delarue responds to their questions by telling his family's story, which is the basis of this novel. Marcel, his two brothers, and his mother lead ordinary rural lives, enlivened by the boys' favorite game-telling outrageous lies. The German occupation has only a minimal impact on them, at least at first. The major disruption for them is the arrival of their Uncle Anton and two of his friends. Madame Cauverian and her daughter are Jews who are trying to get out of the country, but are delayed by the girl's illness. While nothing overt has yet happened to France's Jewish population, the woman is convinced they are in danger. When a rabbi and his followers are rounded up, this fear is confirmed. Later, when Marcel and his brother Ren? are told that the guests have left, their mother makes a scene in the local market, storming at the soldiers about taking them away, when in reality she is hiding them. In the meantime, the boys have secretly befriended a German soldier. The lies mount up, until finally the best liar of all is revealed. The strength of this book is its portrayal of the quiet heroism of ordinary citizens during the war. It is, by turns, amusing and gripping, and told in an engaging manner.

Hoping for a good grade on their World War II project, three Florida girls write a letter of questions to Marcel Delarue, an artist who grew up in occupied France. In reply, he sends a long letter that becomes the text of this first-person novel. After he sketches in the background (a village in the middle of France), and the central characters (Marcel, his two brothers, and their mother), their story begins to unfold. The framework of the letters gradually disappears from readers' consciousness as Marcel's childhood observations and experiences become increasingly compelling. The three brothers are convincingly imperfect in their actions, childlike in their attitudes, and human in their reactions to events and emotions. Marcel's innocent, often silly lies and escapades are eventually shadowed by the realization of certain misunderstood conversations and events that add up to a larger lie. Marcel's mother finally lets him in on the secret to keep him from unwittingly revealing it: for more than a year, a Jewish woman and her daughter have been hiding in a secret crawl space in their home, coming out only at night when the children are asleep. French occupation told from child's point of view

Heads up: The Booklist review above reveals far too much of the plot! Written in short chapters, this is a World War II novel that will be accessible to young (9-12) readers. In response to a request by some girls who are doing research for a school project, the narrator recalls his life as a boy under the Nazi occupation in France. He details the ordinary mischief young boys get into, especially his and his brothers' talent for telling outrageous lies, and the consequences imposed by their strict mother. Living under conditions of war, the boys' basic values are shaken as they develop a tentative friendship with a young German soldier. They must face the complexities of truth and honesty, loyalty and friendship. The characters are portrayed as ordinary, imperfect people whose humanity elevates them to the level of extraordinary heroes. For even younger readers, see The Butterfly, a picture book by Patricia Polacco which also depicts the French occupation.

"Who is the good lier?" What was said in this fiction novel called The Good Liar written by Gregory Maguire. Did any body help the Jews back in the Holocaust? Well this book here tells you. Well there was one family. The family lived in France back in World War 2 and while she was helping the Jews hide from the Germans. Her boy's mother didn't know that they were friends with a German soilder! Does the soilder find out or will they be safe read this and find out. The main characters were the narrator and a brother of the two boys, Pierre a 12 year old boy, Rene a young boy and Maman, the mother of the boys. The point of view was from the narrator. Also the theme of the book is lies are never good big or small. I give this story because it wasn't all that detailed and did not give enough about the charecters like in the beggining of the book. In conclusion I would say its a fairly descent book.

A Great Book for Kids and Their Grown-Ups

Great book for adolescents interested in history. This is a suspenseful and fast-moving story of a young French boy who is learning to live with the German occupation. As the title and the book jacket reveals, the theme of the story is lying - whether thats means lying about your homework, or hiding Jews in the attic, it all (at first) seems a game to the protagonist. Well written tale. Provides some historical insight into the war and the Nazi persecution of the Jews in Europe. I read this it aloud to my son and he loved it (I did too). Well done. Great suspense story for young adults with a good dose of historical insight.

Informal Reading Inventory Review

I have been using the Burns and Roe Reading Inventory for 6 years. As a Primary Reading teacher, I find it a very useful tool for classroom teachers to use for providing instruction at a child's point of need. About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

Great Way to Teach Emotions

This book was not at all what I expected. At first I wasn't sure I would like it, but the response from my one year old son was excellent. He really enjoys learning about all the different emotions George feels. We also spend a lot of time talking about being naught and getting a time out. I think it helps a little with understanding.

The twins loved it!

We bought this book for our slightly-more-than-2-year-old twin grandsons, and they loved it. At this age, they're more interested in identifying the pictures than following the story, but that's ok. There's something about the monkey image that is endlessly fascinating to them. All two-year-olds love monkeys. Go for it!

Poet Mary Oliver wants us to consider the many disparate elements of Winter Hours as "a long and slowly arriving letter--somewhat disorderly, natural in expression, and happily unfinished." And what a welcome letter it is. Oliver touches on the building of houses and the laying of turtle eggs. She ponders the work of Frost ("Everything is all right, say the meter and the rhyme; everything is not all right, say the words"), Poe, Whitman, and Hopkins. She includes some of her own poems and prose poems. And she speaks beautifully of the work of poem-building.

Perhaps more than any other poet writing today, Oliver is an inhabitant and deep observer of the natural world, a place without which, she says, she could not be a poet. All of her poems have been "if not finished at least started--somewhere out-of-doors," and her appreciation of the out-of-doors is all encompassing, defiant of standard classifications. "The world," she says, "is made up of cats, and cattle, and fenceposts!" Oliver so embraces the outdoors that one feels terrible for her that "the labor of writing poems" is so antithetical to being in nature. "Only oddly, and not naturally ... are we found, while awake, in the posture of deliberate or hapless inaction," she says. "But such is the posture of the poet, poor laborer." It is our good fortune that she makes the sacrifice, so that we can experience, through her poems, "the nudge, the prick of the instant, the flame of appreciation that shoots from my heels to my head when compass grass bends its frilled branches and draws a perfect circle on the cold sand." --Jane Steinberg

The usually remote and discreet Oliver, who has won the NBA and Pulitzer Prize for her poetry, comes to the autobiographical fore in this odd miscellany. The prose piece "Sister Turtle" tells of how Oliver, in an act of weird communion with a mother turtle she tracks through the woods, breaks her vegetarian regime to eat the eggs she thieves from the turtle's sandy nest. "Swoon" gorgeously describes a spider weaving her "chaotic" web in the corner of a rented house's stairwell, her egg sac like a "Lilliputian gas balloon." When the spider, dramatic and balletic, kills a windfall cricket, Oliver's close attention to and lack of ease with nature make this essay more immediate and arresting than the collection's several poems. The continuation of the "Sand Dabs" series from two earlier books includes, in "Sand Dabs, Four" deflated lines like "The arena of things, the theater of the imagination, the everywhere of faith." Her inspirational abstractionsA"Does the grain of sand/Know it is a grain of sand?"Acast doubt upon the stronger lines by association. As a belle lettristAthe collection contains brief meditations on Poe, Frost, Hopkins and WhitmanAOliver is clear and winningly didactic, but the collection as a whole never quite feels cohesive or purposeful.

NBA and Pulitzerwinning Oliver takes a pedantic turn with this new collection of poetry, prose, and essays. The cumulative effect is an Emersonian Letters to a Young Poet that is lovely but grandstanding. In the essay ``Sister Turtle,'' Oliver writes of how she broke her vegetarianism. Here, as in many of the pieces, she celebrates her genteel ethical system even as she rebels against it. Of her herbivore's life, she writes: ``But I am devoted to Nature too, and to consider Nature without this appetitethis other-creature-consuming appetiteis to look with shut eyes upon the miraculous interchange that makes things work . . . . '' In another prose piece, ``The Swan,'' Oliver strikes a similarly highfalutin pose: ``I want each poem to indicate a life lived with intelligence, patience, passion, and whimsy . . . . Such self-loving attitudes, however, don't submerge her considerable gifts as an observer of nature. In one selection, she describes a scallop snapping its way through the water as it ``gazes around with its dozens of pale blue eyes.'' In another, she tells of the honeysuckle ``in a moist rage'' near the old burn dump. ``Sand Dabs,'' a series of aphorisms that Oliver began in an earlier book, has gleaming, Schegelian truisms (``Words are wood'') offset by bromides that might be embroidered on pillows (``Does the grain of sand / Know it is a grain of sand?''). Also included are several short essays on Frost, Hopkins, Poe, and Whitman, pieces that, unfortunately, resemble a schoolteacher's lessons more than a literary critic's elucidation. Marian Arkin (Ph.D., New York University) is professor of English at LaGuardia Community College where she is also director of the Writing Center and co-director of the Writing Across the Curriculum program. She has written and co-edited books on tutoring and literature, and she is the managing editor of Antipodes magazine.Cecilia Macheski (Ph.D., City University of New York) is a professor of English and former director of the Writing Program at LaGuardia Community College. She has held three Fulbright Senior Scholar grants and has edited and co-edited books on literature by and about women.Both Marian Arkin and Cecilia Macheski have each taught writing courses for thirty years.

Despite lack of rigor, best undergrad text available.

I took the regular Abstract Algebra course at Purdue as a sophomore, and this book made me decide to switch majors from Physics into Mathematics. Gallian's treatment of algebra is NOT the most thorough. On the other hand, this book is a relatively gentle introduction to the topic, with plenty of good examples included. This would be a good book to base a 'gifted' Algebra course on. I would strongly suggest that very strong students supplement this with Thomas Hungerford's _Algebra_; similarly I recommend that first year graduate students get this book as a 'softer' perspective for when (not if ;)) they get lost. Profs should pick up this book as an example of how to write a palatible math book in the unfortunate academic climate we have today (although I wouldn't sacrifice rigor); teaching assistants should use this for anecdotal material to throw at students. I especially enjoyed the biographies of famous mathematicians and the background that Gallian provides on topics in Algebra (such as his description of the Twenty Five Years' War), which made this book quite pleasant even in the grueling moments.

Excellent undergraduate abstract algebra textbook

I used this book for my Abstract Algebra course at Whitman College. It is genuinely fun and interesting to read. It has many interesting quotes and biographical sketches. The problems are just the right difficultly to be challenging but not frustratingly hard. One interesting thing is that the problem sets include computer application questions. Our class did not use these sections, but some of the problems looked interesting.
I found the text to be well organized and understandable. Numerous examples are included which help for understanding abstract concepts. Neither my friends nor I have noticed any typographical errors. Theorems and corollaries are shaded in a blue background for ease of reference. Every time new notation is introduced, possible ambiguities are discussed. Also, possible confusions about new concepts and common mixups are addressed.
I have only taken one semester of algebra at the current time, so have only used the first half of this book. I feel that it is one of the best textbooks I have used for a mathematics class.

I never knew math was this much fun!!!!

Among all the branches of mathematics that I have come across in my undergraduate career I would have to say that Abstract Algebra was the best. Gallian's book made me appreciate the beauty and power of algebra. This book is full of surprises. It covers groups, rings and fields, and Gallian takes us into the lives of the mathematicians who have made this field of mathematics so ripe. There are ample references which I found helpful, and the book also has many real-world applications of Abstract Algebra, for instance RSA. The prose and the proofs are lucid and very precise. Each page of this book is worth reading! The price might be a little steep but it is worth it!

PreSchool-Grade 2-Crocodile fans rejoice! Lyle is back and ready to take on the work world. When he visits Mr. Primm at his advertising office, he is an instant success. He sharpens pencils, delivers memos, and makes many friends. After listening to him munch his way through a box of Krispie Krunchie Krackles, Mr. Bigg, the big boss attempts to recruit Lyle as a spokesreptile for the cereal. Mr. Primm refuses to allow his friend to pose for the ad and is fired. On Halloween night, while answering a desperate cry for help coming from an abandoned house, the family discovers Mr. Bigg hanging from a ceiling fixture. Lyle picks up the ladder and helps their new neighbor climb down. The happy ending is complete when Mr. Primm is invited to return to the agency. This is another appealing installment in the adventures of lovable Lyle. Contemporary touches, such as a pair of working moms (Mrs. Primm and Lyle's mother) and a company day-care center, bring this classic crocodile into the '90s. Although the plot unfolds a little bit like a sitcom, the text reads smoothly and builds to a neat conclusion. Waber's trademark watercolor and crayon illustrations are filled with warmth and humor. Lyle's always expressive face shines with pride while showing baby pictures of the youngest Primm, clouds with worry while listening to pleas for help, and smiles with contentment when everything turns out right. Ages 4-8. Lyle, that lovable crocodile, returns, and now he's spending some time at Mr. Primm's office. There seems to be no particular reason for the trip downtown; it's not like it's Take-Your-Crocodile-to-Work Day or anything, but once he's in the office, Lyle meets the staff, sharpens pencils, enjoys lunch in the cafeteria, and spends time in the company's day-care center surrounded by kiddies (if he weren't green, you might mistake Lyle for Barney). But when Mr. Primm's boss, Al Bigg, wants to use Lyle in Krispie Krunchie Krackles' new advertising campaign, Mr. Primm protectively says no and loses his job for his trouble. Some of this is rather silly, and it all gets resolved, amicably, of course, but that's one of the pleasures of the series. The action is recognizable and not very threatening (the family breezes right through unemployment), yet there is never a dull moment in these books. Also noteworthy is the art. Waber seems at the top of his game here. The pictures are delightful, very busy, with lots of bits that can be looked at again and again. It's hard to go wrong with Lyle, and libraries may have to order enough copies to go around. Ilene Cooper

We Love Lyle

This is our first (and favorite) Lyle book. It is a cute story, enjoyable for the whole family. Of course, it has a happy ending, and Lyle is the hero. Although it is rather long, my 2 1/2 year old has memorized it, and knows if I miss a word. I highly recommend it. We can't wait to get started with the other Lyle books, and hope that they are as good.

Incoherent non-plot and too much plot at the same time

This book is such a hodgepodge! It's as though four or five editors got together to advise the author. One said it should be a Halloween book, with Lyle in a pirate costume; one said it should be about Lyle's popularity and desirability for product endorsement (toothpaste or cereal); one said it should be about Lyle causing Mr. Pimm to lose his job and the family members all chip in to earn money; another said it should be about Lyle visiting a daycare, and throw in a drawing of Lyle's mother -- who is a nurse at a maternity ward?? They lumped all this together to make LYLE AT THE OFFICE. (Lyle spends very, very little time at an office in this book.) It's so unfocused, even my little boy was scratching his head over what the book was about.

This seems to happen with sequels a lot -- they just want to capitalize on the earning-power of a popular character and figure it doesn't really matter if the book has a coherent story.

The only good thing about this book is that there are drawings of Lyle on every page. If you like Lyle, you'll like that. Don't look for anything else.

my 3rd Lyle book

This is the 3rd book I now own from this series, also have 'Lyle Crocodile' and 'Birthday Party'. Since I have the same name as the main character I have been familiar with these books for a while. It is a good read but it seemed to be too close to the storyline of 'Lyle Crocodile'. He is involved when something bad happens but then saves who made an unpopular decision and then everything is fine in the end. I understand it is a children's book and happy endings are the norm, but fans of the series would easily recognize this.
