Rather than present decision making strictly as a quantitative science, this text views it as a multidimensional process involving values, psychology, sociology, social psychology, and politics. Using a process model--a focus on the process of a decision rather than the outcome--the book presents a variety of perspectives useful for making and evaluating decisions in all kinds of organizations.

A Winner for Those Interested In Decision Making
By Gail A. Mills
I teach a decision making course for undergraduates. After searching numerious books for my class, I came across The Managerial Decision Making Process. While other books outlined the various models used in decision making, this was the only book that detailed the human considerations we bring to the process. Regardless of the decision making model we use, there are underlying behaviors we must be aware of if we are to make quality decisions. Harrison effectively presents numerous aspects of the process including input from the fields of psychology and sociology and the impact of political power.
This was the most comprehensive and thought provoking book on decision making I have read. Of the three books assigned to this course, this is the one students preferred.

A good overview of decision theory
By A Customer
I purchased this book to help me finish an project for my MBA. It has been extremely helpful in providing a clear synopsis of current research on decision theory. It is well-written and covers both quantitative and qualitative models.
The best part of the book are the case studies in the final chapters that cover The Cuban Missle Crisis, the Chrysler bailout, and EuroDisney. These are excellent applications and make the theory understandable.
One failing of this book has been that it does not go into game theory methods. It simply lumps them into quantitative methods and dismisses them as overly simplistic. I think that some treatment is necessary since they are such a buzz-word in the business world.

Poorly Written!!!
By Superstar
This has to be the worst book I have ever read.! EVER!!!

Decision making is a professional process and is complex and difficult for many in an organization, however teaching and explaining this subject shouldn't be anymore complex and difficult to explain than the actual process itself. After reading the first three chaptesin agonizing difficulty, I went back and re-read he first chapter and made more sense. However I thought how much easier it would be to simplified and give examples of some of the difficult category 2 decisions the whole book is about. I could have explained it with much more detail and simplicity and make an 8th grader understand it.

Decision making is not rocket science. These writers turned something simple into a complex hard to understand science. Its important to understand how to make decisions but shouldn't be as complex as splitting the atom. They say 100 words to explain what I could say in 15! It is very poorly written and very ineffective at getting the point accross. I could summarise one whole chapter with two pages and make more sense. In fact, I trully feel the whole book can be reduced to one fourth its size. DONT BUY IT!

I have no complaints. I would order again. But, last session my community college got smart. Now they are putting a code in the books they sell on campus and you must have it to use in class. The professor would not give me the code. So make sure you check that out first.

I loved how fast I've recieved the shipment. The book was in a good condition actually better then I've expected. The book itself is just OK, I would like for it to have more examples. It is not a bad book but like I said, I like having examples when studying and I don't see it that much.

The Best American Short Stories of the CenturyFrom Houghton Mifflin Harcourt

Since the series' inception in 1915, the annual volumes of The Best American Short Stories have launched literary careers, showcased the most compelling stories of each year, and confirmed for all time the significance of the short story in our national literature. Now THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES OF THE CENTURY brings together the best of the best - fifty-five extraordinary stories that represent a century's worth of unsurpassed accomplishments in this quintessentially American literary genre. Here are the stories that have endured the test of time: masterworks by such writers as Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Willa Cather, F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Saroyan, Flannery O'Connor, John Cheever, Eudora Welty, Philip Roth, Joyce Carol Oates, Raymond Carver, Cynthia Ozick, and scores of others. These are the writers who have shaped and defined the landscape of the American short story, who have unflinchingly explored all aspects of the human condition, and whose works will continue to speak to us as we enter the next century. Their artistry is represented splendidly in these pages. THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES series has also always been known for making literary discoveries, and discovery proved to be an essential part of selecting the stories for this volume too. Collections from years past yielded a rich harvest of surprises, stories that may have been forgotten but still retain their relevance and luster. The result is a volume that not only gathers some of the most significant stories of our century between two covers but resurrects a handful of lost literary gems as well. Of all the great writers whose work has appeared in the series, only John Updike's contributions have spanned five consecutive decades, from his first appearance, in 1959, to his most recent, in 1998. Updike worked with coeditor Katrina Kenison to choose stories from each decade that meet his own high standards of literary quality.

Amazon.com Review
At age 67, the perennially youthful John Updike may at last qualify as something of an elder statesman. But the Best American Short Stories annual--whose greatest hits package Updike has now assembled--is almost a generation older, having commenced publication in 1915. This staying power allows the hefty Best American Short Stories of the Century to perform double duty. It is, on the one hand, a priceless compendium of American manners and morals--a decade-by-decade survey of how we lived then, and how we live now. Yet Updike very consciously avoided the sociological angle in making his selection. "I tried not to select stories because they illustrated a theme or portion of the national experience," he writes in his introduction, "but because they struck me as lively, beautiful, believable, and, in the human news they brought, important." In this he succeeded: the 55 fictions that made the grade are most notable for their human (rather than merely historical) interest.

So who got in? There are a good number of cut-and-dried classics here, including Hemingway's "The Killers," Faulkner's "That Evening Sun Go Down," and Philip Roth's acidic spin on religious connivance, "Defender of the Faith." In other cases, major authors are represented by relatively minor works. Yet it's hard to quibble with the inclusion of Willa Cather, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Tennessee Williams, J.F. Powers, Eudora Welty--particularly when you take into account that their second-tier creations are fully the equal of anybody else's masterpieces. And the final third of the book really does constitute an honor roll of contemporary American fiction, with brilliant entries by Saul Bellow, Donald Barthelme, Raymond Carver, Tim O'Brien, Bernard Malamud, Cynthia Ozick, John Cheever, and Vladimir Nabokov. (For the latter, Updike actually succumbed to his own idolatry and bent the rules for admission--but nobody who reads the hallucinatory "That in Aleppo Once..." will regret it.) It goes without saying that fiction fans will be complaining about the editor's sins of omission well into the next century. But no matter how you slice it, this remains an elegant and essential advertisement for the short form. --James Marcus

From Publishers Weekly
The task had to be daunting, selecting the 55 stories that grace this volume. The title alone is daunting: the best? But the riches containedAincluding a foreword by Kenison and a deft introduction from UpdikeAprove the title accurate. Consider the resources mined: 2000 stories anthologized in annual best-of volumes since 1915. Although certain notable story writers, John O'Hara for one, never made it into the series and others who did have been crowded out of this volume, the stories excavated and displayed herein are gems. Often these are the gems one would expectAsuch as John Cheever's balance of the magical and the sinister in "The Country Husband," about an inappropriate desire that floods a man after a plane crash. What story captures better than "Greenleaf" Flannery O'Connor's affrontery before Protestantism and her vision of unearned grace? And would readers expect anything less of Dorothy Parker than "Here We Are," a scathing yet poignant depiction of a newly married couple bickering like old retirees? Indeed, the volume includes such signature stories as Joyce Carol Oates's "Where Are You Going, where Have You Been?," Cynthia Ozick's "The Shawl," Raymond Carver's "Where I'm Calling From" and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried." But some stories here by the well-known are not necessarily the best known. Fitzgerald is represented not by "Babylon Revisited" but by "Crazy Sunday," about the perilous life of a screenwriter employed at a director's whim. The transient world captured in Eudora Welty's "The Hitch-Hikers" seems far removed from the homier gardens, parlors, and post offices familiar from her other fiction. And readers can be grateful that Updike chose not "The Magic Barrel" but Bernard Malamud's "The German Refugee," a tale that ends with a dark if O. Henry-like reversal. In Kenison's words, these stories are "an invaluable record of our century." The book opens with Benjamin Rosenblatt's "Zelig," a tale of an immigrant who longs against reason to return to Russia. Immigration is a recurring theme, picked up again in Alexander Godin's sadly ironic "My Dead Brother Comes to America," And that we are nearly all descendants of immigrants is Aas apparent in Willa Cather's "Double Birthday" or Saul Bellow's "A Silver Dish" as in Gish Jen's bitterly funny "Birthmates," about a Chinese-American as trapped by his self-definition as by the racism of others. In his introduction, Updike writes, "The American experience... has been brutal and hard." The stories bear this out. In Elizabeth Bishop's "The Farmer's Children," two boys freeze protecting their father's equipment, while in Grace Stone Coates's lovely "Wild Plums," a young girl is forbidden to gather fruit with a family her mother deems socially inferior. Life on this continent may be brutal, but this extraordinary collection offers up dazzling writing that salves the wounds, as well as stories full of the pleasures of life.

From Library Journal
The only author to be included in Best American Short Stories in every decade since the 1950s, John Updike was chosen to select those stories best representing the American century since the series inception in 1915. Being limited to those originally chosen for the annual volumes, Updike admits that past editors may have overlooked some gems. But he makes a valiant effort to include all the masters of the form, from Faulkner, Hemingway, and Fitzgerald, through Cheever, OConnor, and Malamud, to Carver and Munro. Though one might question whether an individual choice is really one of the best of the century, as a whole the collection presents a microcosm of 20th-century American life: the immigrant experience (many of the early stories), the Roaring Twenties (Fitzgerald), World War II (Roth) and the Holocaust (Malamud and Ozick), 1950s suburban values (Cheever) and their rejection by 1960s youth culture (Oates), Vietnam (OBrien), and AIDS (Sontag and Dark). Many of the stories are famous and easily found elsewhere, but there are some rare surprises like a semi-autobiographical piece by Tennessee Williams. Recommended for most public libraries, and for those academic libraries that no longer hold all the annual volumes.

Doesnt (cant) live up to the title, but very worthwhile
By cs211
Solely due to the way this book was assembled, it cannot live up to its title. This book is not an assemblage of the best short stories from the entire body of 20th century American literature; rather, this book is an anthology of the best stories that happened to have appeared in the annual Best American Short Story volumes. So, to make it into this book, a story would have had to be recognized when it was written as being one of the best of that year, as chosen by a single editor/reader.
I enjoy reading short stories, and every year I purchase both the O. Henry Prize Stories and the Best American Short Stories. When I first did this, I was amazed at how little overlap there is between 20 stories chosen for each anthology (usually, there are only one or two stories in common, and typically the story chosen by O. Henry as the best of the year does not appear in the other anthology). So once again we have evidence that beauty (and art and subjective opinions such as "best") are in the eye of the beholder.
So, can John Updike's selections be debated? Undoubtedly; every reader of this anthology will be able to cite stories and authors that they believe should have been included (as for me, I was most disappointed by the absence of Ray Bradbury). But is this anthology worth reading? Absolutely!
Reading this anthology cover-to-cover is like traveling through time, and provides an enriching perspective on the history of the 20th century in America. From the hardscrabble existence of immigrants and farmers, to the Depression, to the problems of racism, to the war, to the ennui that exists in a time of relative plenty, these stories do cover the broad American experience of the past century. Furthermore (aside from Ray Bradbury), many of our best authors are represented, so this book is a good way to get introduced to authors that one has heard about but not read before.
It's surprising to me that short story anthologies aren't more popular, given our busy society. A well written short story entertains, conveys a message, teaches something about the human condition, and can be enjoyed in one sitting, such as a short plane or train ride. I would highly recommend this anthology as a way for short story novices to get started, and then one can graduate to the annual O. Henry and Best American Short Story anthologies.

Some highlights, but the set doesn't really "read" that well
By T. Chan
This is a nice collection with many great writers, but they are selected, I believe, not because they are particuraly powerful or flow well, but because they illustrate some subtlety of writing that Updike and Kenison want to illustrate. If it's the latter they're trying to do, they succeed. If you really want a set of short stories you can take with you on the train, bus or plane and enjoy, you might want to look elsewhere.

A Review
By Stacey Cochran
I used to go to the library and read the old annual Best American Short Story collections. There was something almost religious about picking up a copy from 1927 and reading a story by a then unknown kid named Ernest Hemingway in that old type-face, or the Faulkner stories in just about every annual volume during the 1930s. The bios of these writers at the back of the old copies when they were unknown writers was so innocent and naive. Modern critical theory has influenced my perception of so many of these writers, and that is shame.

The stories collected in this Best American Short Stories of the Century are taken from the the annual volumes. There are stories representing each decade from the teens to the 90s. There are classics, and there are surprises. My favorite is Ann Beattie's "Janus." It is subtle and masterfully written.

I've owned this book for two years, and I read it from time-to-time. Some stories I've read four or five times. Some I haven't read at all. And it's a book that it's okay to do that with, I think. The Fitzgerald story "Crazy Sunday" was something of a nice surprise, and indeed, that kind of surprise seems at the heart of what Updike and Kenison were aiming to realize. How to make a Best of the 20th Century anotholgy exciting, you know? Considering they could only take stories from the annual Best of American Short Story anothologies, they did that well, I think. Martha Gellhorn's "Miami--New York" was insightful. The John Cheever, Raymond Carver, and Joyce Carol Oates stories are great classics. I enjoyed Donald Barthelme's "A City of Churches" and Tim O'Brien's "The Things They Carried" -- stories ranging from the humorous, to the heartrending.

If I could make one suggestion regarding Best American Short Stories, it would be this: I think it would be interesting if every few years they allowed a so-called popular writer to read as guest editor. These stories end up representing a kind of intellectual clique. And it would be interesting to see what a guest editor like John Grisham or Stephen King would add to the mix of our nation's collective stories.

From Publishers Weekly
PreSchool-Using illustrations from the original Curious George series (Houghton Mifflin), the publisher has produced two very nice board books, translated into a neutral and accessible Spanish appropriate for younger audiences. In Curious George and the Bunny, the lovable monkey is featured in a problem-solving story. George cannot resist approaching a cage full of bunnies and taking one out to pet. When one escapes and runs away, George must devise a way to find him and bring him back to his mother. In Curious George's Opposites, there is no story, rather a series of scenes featuring the mischievous monkey that illustrate concepts, such as up, down; in front, behind; dry, wet; and so forth. About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

best of the litter
By Jason Kirkfield
Although this is, like virtually all of the Curious George board books released in the last dozen years, essentially a cut and paste job from the earlier full-length books, it is my favorite of the bunch.

Opposites are a great concept for young ones to learn, and while there are surely other books that will offer similar information, nor will this one irreparably harm your child (like The Original Curious George)!

Dr. Seuss' The Foot Book is a fine choice, but it is more for early readers, at least the version I have in its original non-board book form (The Foot Book).

Since there is no danger in spoiling the plot(!), these are the couplets in Curious George's Opposites:

UP/DOWN
FORWARD/BACKWARD
DRY/WET
IN/OUT
CLOSED/OPEN
AWAKE/ASLEEP

From School Library Journal
Grade 3-6?In this fast-paced, satisfying animal adventure, a young Siberian husky becomes an accepted member of an Alaskan wolf pack. Granite is the oldest of a litter bred to be sled dogs, but he does not take naturally to the harness and training. At the first opportunity, he escapes into the wilderness where, near starvation, he encounters a wolf pack. He is adopted by the mate of the leader, a white wolf whose own pups have recently been kidnapped for the wolf/dog hybrid market. The majesty and harshness of the Alaskan environment, the sophisticated levels of pack communication and behavior, and the many perils, both human and natural, that threaten the survival of the animals are deftly woven into the story. Granite's struggle to find his place in the pack is particularly captivating. While generally plausible, the writing is occasionally jarring when human emotions are attributed to the animals; however, the author defends her position in a note indicating that the latest research on wolves maintains that they "feel emotions once regarded as strictly human." A good choice for leading readers into Jean Craighead George's Julie of the Wolves (HarperCollins, 1972).?Caroline Ward, Nassau Library System, Uniondale, NY

From Booklist
Gr. 4^-7. Librarians have traditionally frowned on anthropomorphizing animals in books, but in her opening note, Hall suggests that it is just as foolish to write about dogs as though they did not have intelligent communication, emotions, and problem-solving skills. That said, she offers a story written from the point of view of a Siberian husky pup, Granite, who must learn the ways of wolves to survive after being separated from his own family. Keen observation of canine behavior and thorough research into wolf society help make this a heartfelt wildlife story, with plenty of dramatic events to keep the pages turning. Susan Dove Lempke

From Kirkus Reviews
A runaway husky pup, Granite, falls in with a wolf pack and struggles to win its acceptance in this Call of the Wild for a younger audience. Granite wouldn't have stood a chance, had not the alpha male's mate, Snowdrift, just lost her pups to human breeders. To ease her grief, Ebony lets the injured dog live, though it's a precarious existence; constantly harassed by the rest of the pack, unable to catch even field mice, Granite is completely dependent on Snowdrift's maternal instincts--at least, at first. Crediting the observations of researchers Adolph Murie and David Mech, as well as a film by Jim Brandenberg, Hall portrays her wolves (and dogs) as intelligent creatures with strong feelings, an expressive language, and a well-developed social structure. People get short shrift, appearing in only a few brief scenes and mostly to do harm; a hunter's bullet blinds Snowdrift, and it's saving her from running over a cliff that finally earns Granite the entire pack's approval. While naming them, even for the purpose of clarity, introduces a false note, the wolves are not unreasonably anthropomorphized; their behavior and ``feelings'' seem perfectly normal given the challenges of the Alaskan wild. Child of the Wolves
By Matt
Child of the Wolves is a touching, suspensful, and action filled book about a dog named Garnite who has run away in an attempt to not be sold, leaving his brothers and mother, Seppala, behind. Garnite, somewhat injured, is found by a wolf named Ebony in the tundra of Alaska. If not for Snowdrift, Ebony's mate, the poor husky would have been killed on the spot. Snowdrift had lost her pups to the wolf/hybrid market, and Ebony, the alpha male, allows her to keep the injured pup. Through constant tourment, Granite must learn the rules of the pack and earn his place in his newly found family. Through all Granite's attempts, he fails to earn the love and respect of Ebony. That is, until Granite saves the injured and blind Snowdrift from falling down a cliff. Not until then does Ebony finally accept the dog in the pack. Child of the Wolves is a heartfelt story that will keep the pages turning. It also tells about the feelings of wolves that were once regarded as "truly human". I haven't read such a great book since Animal Farm by George Orwell. Come read and watch how Granite earns his place in this new, challenging world.

Child of the Wolves by Elizabeth Hall; Yearling Books: New York, 1996.

Illustrator- Tom Antonishak

Imagine that you are a Siberian-Husky puppy abandoned in the Alaskan forest with no foods for days. You would be hungry and frightened. In Child of the Wolves this happened. This fiction book is written by Elizabeth Hall.

This book is about a Siberian-Husky puppy named Granite. He was the oldest but the smallest out of the litter. One day a stranger came to buy huskies because the puppies were at a kennel. He picked up one of Granite's bothers. Then he picked up Granite, but Granite didn't want to leave. So Granite bit the stranger and ran off to the forest. He ran and ran until he couldn't any more. Weeks passed with out food. Then he saw a pack of wolves. The leader of the wolf pack, Snowdrift went up to him. She took Granite in. The wolves didn't like him because he was a dog.

This book is fabulous. It was very spellbinding. Granite's journey is gripping. I really liked the part where he encounters danger with a grizzly bear. It's a book about survival. Granite is alone, but finally gets taken in by a wolf pack to teach him how to survive. This makes me think of how people often treat new people they don't know anything about. The theme is, no matter what, everyone needs help from someone sometimes.

The author wrote this in third person point of view. It focused on the main character, Granite. It is interesting because they never speak, yet you know what they are saying and feeling because the narrator tells you everything. I would recommend this book to people that like animal stories or wolves. This is an animal book with dogs and wolves. This would be appropriate for children ages 10 and up.

Child of the Wolves By: Elizabeth Hall
This adventure story is about a husky named "Granite" who runs away into the wilderness and meets up with a wolf pack. On his journey with the pack, he deals with all the mean wolves, but also makes some friends, like Digger, a young wolf cub. By the end, Granite becomes higher in ranking in the pack and becomes part of the family. This story was great. As I read, I was pulled into the book and forgot about everything else. There were very frightening parts that made me jump; at times, my hair was standing on end. I suggest this book to kids between nine and thirteen, for people who love dogs.

Carson McCullers: A Life, by Josyane Savigneau

"Writing is my occupation," Carson McCullers often said. "I must do it. I have done it for so long." The beloved author of such classics as THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER, THE MEMBER OF THE WEDDING, and REFLECTIONS IN A GOLDEN EYE, McCullers began writing her first best-selling novel at the age of twenty. It was the start of a lifelong love affair with stories and language -- and of the creation of a body of work that continues to draw new generations of readers.
In CARSON MCCULLERS: A LIFE, Josyane Savigneau gives us at last a truly popular biography of one of America's greatest women novelists. Carson McCullers's life story rivals the plot of any of her novels. A brilliant, sensitive artist who had a painful small-town childhood in the South and early international success, she was crippled by a mysterious disease in early adulthood. A woman who composed the most romantic of letters, she struggled to find lasting happiness with her husband, Reeves, whom she married twice. Carson wrote often of the loneliness of the human condiiton, and yet she surrounded herself with a constellation of witty, always entertaining celebrities: Tennessee Williams, Truman Capote, Katherine Anne Porter, Richard Wright, John Huston, and Edward Albee, among others.
The first biographer to have the full cooperation of the McCullers esate, Josyane Savigneau has uncovered the private Carson McCullers, a woman who never really grew up yet was always seductive, a woman whose candor and immense emotional needs sometimes overshadowed her great charm, generosity, loyalty, humor, and deep intelligence. Above all, Carson was a life force, a person who needed to write and who did so despite great physical pain, up until the very end. Published to rave reviews in France, this passionate biography is one that "must [be] read . . . to measure the full extent of McCullers's torment and her determination to overcome her suffering" (L'EXPRESS).

From Library Journal
Critical of how Carson McCullers (1917-67) has been presented in previous biographical works, Savigneau (Marguerite Yourcenar: Inventing a Life) aimed to find McCullers the private "strange woman-child" not conceal her. Indeed, Savigneau compassionately reveals the woman with a childlike face who continually lived the unsettling, emotional turmoil of an adolescent in an adult world but who also showed the incredible intelligence, talent, determination, and strength to overcome her human frailties. Thanks to access granted by the McCullers estate, Savigneau provides us with information from previously unpublished manuscripts and letters while also drawing heavily upon work done by Carlos L. Dews (ed., Illuminations and Night Glare: The Unfinished Autobiography of Carson McCullers); critical and biographical writings previously available only in French; an interview with McCullers's psychotherapist and friend, Mary Mercer; and previous American biographical works, mainly Virginia Spencer Carr's major The Lonely Hunter: A Biography of Carson McCullers (LJ 6/1/75). Although Carr's life remains the standard, Savigneau's heartfelt, honest portrait of one of the great novelists of the American South attests to McCullers's continuing international popularity. Highly recommended for academic and large public libraries.

This book tells of Carson McCuller's relationships with her family, friends and fellow authors & artists. Her contentious relationship with her husband, Reeves McCullers, the wanna-be author whom she married twice, is thoroughly discussed. Although her life was filled with pain from her "mysterious illness" and difficult relationships, the author shows how Carson had a strong desire to survive and keep writing. It was interesting to read about her life-long friendship with Tennesse Williams and her love-hate relationship with Truman Capote. The author gathered together the opinions of many people who knew Carson, whether they loved her or hated her, and shares them with us in this story of her life.

Fairly Good But Annoying
By TV Sam
I'm in the middle of reading it right now, and it's a fairly good bio, certainly interesting in its own way, but the author has the annoying habit of repeatedly taking pointless potshots at previous biographers, as if to say: "They were wrong, but I, yes I, oh great I, on the other hand, am right." Probably the best thing to do is to read the great Carson McCullers' books and absorb her life through her fiction, it will give you her soul and that is more important than "facts". But if you must have facts and don't mind a biographer who toots her own horn like a cabbie stuck in traffic, then this just might do.

After hearing something regarding this writer's tragic life, I thought a biography would be interesting (morbid me). I must admit, however, I was somewhat amused, and sometimes annoyed, by one of this biographer's strategies. She went to great lengths to defend this author -- a person whom she had never met -- against criticisms drawn by contemporaries, collegues, and other biographers, many of whom knew Carson McCullers personally. She even went so far as to make personal attacks on some of these individuals. And on what did she base these conclusions? On the cold record, as she candidly admitted that most of the persons who knew Carson McCullers (and were interviewed at length by earlier biographers) have pased away. I would have enjoyed the biography better if the facts were set forth more objectively, and she had let her readers make their own conclusions. This biographer should have not felt the need to be constantly dending this author whose books will speak for themselves.
But the biography is not a bad book, as it was well written and drew some interesting conclusions. I guess she was attempting to say something new, and to the extent it will encourage a reader to go out and read McCuller's catalog, it serves its purpose.

Still a standard field guide to fungi
By Christopher J. Sharpe
This field guide is nearly twenty years old, but there are so few field guides to fungi that it still remains a standard reference. Like all Peterson field guides, it is handy and compact and can easily be taken into the field and pored over with the mushrooms in their wild habitat. The text is detailed and accurate and a "similar species" section is very useful. However, this guide uses painted plates whereas amateurs generally find it easier to identify fungi by photographs. I personally find photographs more accurate, but enjoy paintings in their own right. In this case the paintings are pleasing and quite faithful.

Although this guide should be on every mushroom enthusiast's shelves, a better beginners guide might be Roger Phillips' photographic book which has now appeared in a revised edition (on Amazon.com: ISBN 1554071151). Phillips provides 1000 photographs compared to this guide's 700 illustrations. However, Phillips is rather large to take into the field except in a backpack. Bear in mind that no fungus guide is comprehensive - each treats a selection of species - so it is wise to have a good selection in order to be in with a chance of correct identification.

So, until a compact photographic guide to fungi appears, this tried and tested Peterson guide will continue to fill a niche in the mushroom hunter's library.

If you are beginning, start with this one.
By J. Rapp
We own several different guides. Each has it's own strength. I recommend this as the first guide for those beginning to identify MR/Fungi. It covers most of the basic MR/Fungi family, but is not encylopedic as Arora's 'Mushrooms Demystified' attempts to be, nor does it have the number of color photographs that either the Falcon Guide 'North American Mushrooms' or Audubon's Field Guide. But it's one of the easiest to use beginning with 48 (mostly color) plates, then branching off into related species.

mushroom field guide
By michael t. fleming
I found this book to be well illustrated. And although not as comprehensive as i'd hoped, it is still the most complete guide I have found. Overall, I feel it is well above average--and I'm quite hard to please!

Why do beekeepers use smoke machines when collecting honey? Can a bee really sting only once? Why do bees "dance"? In concise, detailed text and abundant illustrations that range from the humorous to the scientific, Charles Micucci offers a wide-ranging and spirited introduction to the life cycle, social organization, and history of one of the world's most useful insects. He includes information on how bees make honey, what a beekeeper does, and products that contain beeswax--everything from lipstick to waxes for buffing surfboards. Micucci's rare gift for making science enjoyable and accessible is again revealed in this remarkably witty, rich salute to the honeybee.

Such a sweet and informative little book
By Carol R.
Such a sweet and informative little book! My daughter grew up with a grandfather who was a bee keeper, so I purchase things "bee" for her. The illustrations are lovely, and the information is factual. I would recommend this for anyone having children, or for that matter, any adult who is interested in honey or the honey bee! Thank you so much. Carol f. Raines

A great educational tool
By Gigles
Borrowed out my book to a friend who is just starting beekeeping, she used it in a presentation to her elementary class and to help her pre-teen son learn about honey-bee life. (And then ordered one for herself!) I use it with my grandson. A nice, well illustrated book on the full life cycle, job routine and importance of honeybees.
