These Thousand Hills (Big Sky), by A. B. Guthrie Jr.

When These Thousand Hills was published in 1956, The Saturday Review proclaimed it to be "so compelling that it is hard indeed to set aside until it has been devoured." Conjuring up the ephemeral world of cattle ranchers in the 1880s, this intimate saga delights in a Montana community's boisterous, wanderlusting eccentrics as they chase after love and their unbridled ambitions. At its center is Lat Evans, good-hearted and yet seduced by the possibilities for prosperity in his new life; gradually he discerns how the perils of the natural world, and most especially human nature, can conspire to frustrate a young man's best intentions. A lively, quixotic revisit to our historic youth, this literary classic deftly captures western drama at its finest, with all its accompanying toils of the heart.

From Library Journal
Who says the West isn't wild any more? This duo by Guthrie follow on the boot heels of two recent Max Brand reprints (Classic Returns, 10/15/95), perhaps triggering a resurgence of interest in the genre. LJ's reviewer found Fair Land, a sequel to Guthrie's Big Sky and The Way West, "not only an authentic portrayal of the Old West but also a good novel with full-bodied characters and a spare, though picturesque, style" (LJ 9/1/82). The Thousand Hills, however, was deemed "far below the author's usual high standard" (LJ 11/15/56). A hit and a miss.

From the Back Cover
First published in 1956, 'These Thousand Hills' continues the western epic of A.B. Guthrie, Jr.'s critically acclaimed Big Sky series and follows, in the era it precisely reinvents, Guthrie's 'Fair Land, Fair Land.' Conjuring up the ephemeral world of cattle ranchers on the Montana expanses of the 1880s, this intimate saga delights in the frontier's conniving, roaming eccentrics as they chase after love and their unbridled ambitions.

About the Author
A. B. Guthrie, Jr. (1901–1991), was the author of numerous books, including six Big Sky novels, as well as the Academy Award–winning screenplay for the classic film Shane. He received the 1950 Pulitzer Prize for his novel The Way West. Guthrie was honored for his contribution to literature and his portrayal of the American West.

These Thousand Hills-a classic cowboy tale
By Mollie Riordan
In my opinion, Guthrie's "These Thousand Hills" is a typical western novel. It tells the story of a young man named Lat and his journey into adulthood. His adventure as a cowboy is complete with prostitutes, encounters with Indians and "bad guy" cowboys, murder, and love. Lat dreams of starting his own ranch, but he comes from a very humble background, and has to make his money fur trapping and racing his horse. His prostitute lover, Callie, gives him her life savings to bet on his horse in hopes of getting him to marry her. Lat can't marry her because she would not be good for his reputation, so he marries a well-to-do woman named Joyce instead, although he knows he loves Callie. Lat sacrifices many of his relationships in order to keep his reputation and work toward his dream.

Guthrie uses imagery in describing the scenery, but more so in describing the women in the story. He describes both Joyce and Callie in meticulous detail, along with all of the other women featured in the story. I pictured all of the women in the story easily, but Guthrie did not ever give a detailed description of any of the men in the book. He also uses diction to set the rugged, cowboy setting, often using a western accent and sometimes using words that seem uneducated. Overall, the book was simple and not difficult to understand. Guthrie basically tells the reader exactly what is going on, so there is not very much to analyze or look deeper into. I enjoyed the book and it had all the makings of a perfect cowboy tale.

These Thousand Hills
By Mary Rice
This book is very enjoyable and I very much like the many "mountain man" stories by AB Guthrie. He adds a realistic dimension to his stories, that allows you to actually find the areas he writes about.

Doesn't belong with the series, didn't hold my attention
By Kasey
Aside from the fact that the main character was the son and grandson of previous characters, it didn't seem like the book really fit into the series. It had a completely different setting, different lifestyle (we went from mountain men to cattle rancher), and the whole atmosphere of it seemed off when compared to the others. I just couldn't get into it. The character was bland, and it was chapter 28 before anything exciting happened. I read it just because it was part of the series, and I really enjoyed the others, but I didn't enjoy this one.

In this companion book to "Autumn: An Alphabet Acrostic," the pleasures of spring, from April to Zenith, are captured in twenty-six short poems. New grass and daffodils, hopscotch and kite flying, kittens under the porch and baby birds under the eaves are the subjects of Steven Schnur's evocative verses and Leslie Evans's luminous linoleum-cut illustrations. When read vertically, each poem reveals a playful acrostic, making every handsomely designed page a double treat for the eye as well as a joyous tribute to the season.

book evokes spirit of spring
By S. McFarland
The concept of this book--the acrostic--is clever. But it's the beautiful illustrations and the effortless, hiaku-like writing that make this book so appealing. It's a wonderful picture book that truly evokes the spirit of spring.

Smart acrostic books that introduce topics to little ones
By K. Whitt
These books are entertaining for both adults and kids. We are both wondering what spring item will be represented in the next letter of the alphabet, and how the author will describe that word with the limited parameters. For example, A is:

After days of

Pouring

Rain, the last

Ice and snow finally

Leave the earth.

(See the word April reading down the first lines of the description?)

The illustrations are also very colorful and add a lot to the text.

About the Author
Thomas A. Bailey (1903-1983) taught history at his alma mater, Stanford University, for nearly forty years. Long regarded as one of the nation's premier historians of American diplomacy, he was honored by his colleagues in 1968 with election to the presidencies of both the Organization of American Historians and the Society for Historians of American Foreign Relations. He was the author, editor, or co-editor of some twenty-books, but the work in which he took the most pride was The American Pageant through which, he liked to say, he had taught American history to several million students.

David M. Kennedy received his Ph.D. from Yale University. He is the Donald J. McLachlan Professor of History Emeritus and co-director of The Bill Lane Center for the Study of the North American West at Stanford University. His first book, BIRTH CONTROL IN AMERICA: THE CAREER OF MARGARET SANGER, was honored with both the Bancroft Prize and the John Gilmary Shea Prize. He has won numerous teaching awards at Stanford, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate courses in American political, diplomatic, intellectual, and social history, and in American literature. Dr. Kennedy published a volume in the OXFORD HISTORY OF THE UNITED STATES, FREEDOM FROM FEAR: THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IN DEPRESSION AND WAR, 1929--1945, for which he was honored with the 2000 Pulitzer Prize. He is an elected fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and of the American Philosophical Society, and he served from 2002--2011 on the board of the Pulitzer Prizes.

The Spirit is willing but some documents are weak
By A Customer
Bailey and Kennedy's documents collection is now a standard in secondary schools and some colleges, and with good reason. The book is well-organized, contains excerpts short enough that students can read them as complements to a narrative text (or even in class), and the authors generally include multiple perspectives on controversial issues. The section on the Spanish/American/Cuban/Filipino war, for example, provides at least one document from each "side," making this a useful resource for those of us who teach.
Readers should beware, however, that subsequent revisions of the original edition have not kept pace with developments in historical inquiry. The book is very lean on social history, and there are almost no documents on cultural history. Furthermore, the collection is very idiosyncratic in its inclusion of African-Americans and women. For example, the text does not include an excerpt of the Brown v. Board decision of 1954 and omits any mention of second-wave feminism in its collection of documents on "the stormy sixties."
Perhaps the 10th edition will be more inclusive, but for now I'd suggest students -- and teachers -- of American history seeking for a supplementary documents collection keep looking.

A sprightly text and colorful illustrations follow two creative people-and a talkative dog and cat-through the writing process step by step, from the inspiration for a story to the satisfaction of sharing the book with readers. Eileen Christelow based this instructive picture book on questions children asked during her classroom talks around the country. Simple enough for young children to understand, and with the entertainment value of fiction, "What Do Authors Do?" is children's nonfiction at its best.

From Publishers Weekly
Alternating informative commentary with humorous, action-filled cartoons, Christelow (Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree) light-heartedly explains how books are created and produced. "Authors get ideas for books at the strangest moments!" announces the headliner text; below, cartoon panels show neighboring authors watching their pets chase each other into a pond. After the authors take notes, make lists or outlines, read and research, and "listen and watch," the man ends up writing a chapter book about "a dog and a cat who travel around the country on a freight train" and the woman ends up writing and illustrating a picture book about a "dog-chasing cat who ends up a hero when he rescues a family from a fire." As the two deal with rejection, revision, working with editors, printing and production, deciding on a dedication, and even taking author photos, their cheerful pets react: "That's me!" says Rufus as his master writes; "Dumb magazine!" says Max as his mistress reads an unfavorable review. As its title suggests, this book emphasizes the author's role?for a more in-depth look at production, see Aliki's How a Book Is Made (1986), also for this age group. Although not every author follows the exact path Christelow outlines, she clarifies a sometimes complicated process?and makes it seem full of fun. Ages 5-8.

From School Library Journal
Grade 1-3?Christelow follows two next-door neighbors as they independently develop stories about their pets?the scruffy sheepdog, Rufus; and Max, his energetic feline adversary. Dialogue in cartoon balloons and brief text describe the writing process and the mechanics of publishing. The authors talk to one another, share their works-in-progress with family members (and their pets), and confer with other writers in a workshop. Readers follow this lengthy and complicated process through rejections, acceptance, editorial sessions, and rewrites, as each author perseveres to the happy conclusion. Because Christelow chooses to follow the "story" of two books rather than one, and includes technical details about printing, layout, proofing, and binding, there is much here for readers to absorb. Some of the material is covered in Aliki's How a Book Is Made (Crowell, 1986). Christelow's purpose?to answer the general question posed in the title by including just about every topic raised when authors visit schools or libraries?is accomplished in a humorous, sprightly manner, using the panel format of cartoon illustration to good advantage. Librarians and teachers introducing the writing process will find this title very useful. Young readers will appreciate the determination, patience, and hard work it takes to produce the books they enjoy, and will welcome the journey from idea to finished book.?Martha Rosen, Edgewood School, Scarsdale,

Gr. 3^-5. There are many books explaining the adult world of work to kids. However, some professions are undeniably tougher than others to describe in print. How does one portray the creative impulse? Or the personal investment an artist makes in his or her work? Christelow has captured such elusive matters as well as a host of practical ones in this witty, lucid account of what authors do. Cartoonlike panels tell a dual story: two authors watch their pets get into a comic squabble and are inspired to write about it but come up with very different ideas for their books. The authors are followed through every stage in the bookmaking process. We see them move from the excitement of creation to the nerve-racking quest for a publisher to the endless details of getting into print and finally to the tasks of promotion. The dual story line easily demonstrates that some aspects of the process are personal and individual (such as how a story changes) and others are universal (such as waiting for reviews). Christelow packs a great deal of humor as well as information into her attractive pages. Best of all, she infuses the whole with a sense of the zest and love that writers feel for their work. Young people who find this book not only will learn a great deal about authorship, but also may well be inspired to try it themselves. Leone McDermott

What Do Authors Do?
By Ann Vollmar
This is an excellent book for teaching children how books are created by an author and then published. It is a humorous account of the ways authors find their ideas and the rewriting necessary to create their stories. I plan to use it as an inspiration for my third graders as they write their own stories.

The Magic Bean Tree: A Legend from Argentina, by Nancy Van Laan

In the middle of the wide Argentine pampas there once grew a magic tree. Above this tree slept a bird so evil it could stop the rain from falling. And not far from this tree lived a brave boy who one day set out to save his village and all the creatures from dying of thirst. Illustrated with charming folk-art-like paintings and retold with simplicity and drama, this legend of a child's courage and faith explains why Argentineans believe that good luck can be found in the shade of a carob tree.

From School Library Journal
Kindergarten-Grade 5AThis pourquoi tale from the Quechua people of Argentina tells of the first tree in the world, a carob. When drought comes to the pampas, a young boy named Topec goes in search of rain. The carob tree tells him that he must send away the Great Bird of the Underworld that roosts in its highest branches. Topec brings his people to make noise; the animals join in the racket, and the bird flies away allowing the gods to hear the people's prayers and send rain. As a reward, the carob sheds beans, which provide food for everyone; soon carob trees spread throughout Argentina. The theme of a small or weak animal or child who saves the people is eternally satisfying, and children can easily identify with the hero, although Topec's task is less arduous than some. Vidal's stylized paintings are dramatic and colorful, especially in the portrayal of the supernatural bird. One problematic element of this well-told tale is that although the carob (Ceratonia siliqua) is indeed so useful as to seem magical, it is not indigenous to the New World, and thus could not have been known to the Quechuas before the arrival of the Spanish. Also, the tree pictured often looks like a tamarind, also an Old World native.APam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ

Ages 4^-8. In the long ago of legend, one tree stood alone in the middle of the Argentine pampas. "Full of magic, the carob tree stretched toward the sky like a green umbrella." But the Life Giver has stopped sending the rain, and when the rest of the pampas is scorched, a young boy courageously sets out to bring back the rain. Blown beneath the leafy, green carob tree by the dry North Wind, Topec is told by the magic tree that he must scare away the Bird of the Underworld, who sleeps at night in the tree's top branches and who has been blocking the people's prayers for rain. With the help of his entire village, Topec leads the noise that frightens the evil bird from the treetop; the rains come, and the carob tree rewards the brave boy and his people with a shower of golden-red beans from which more carob trees will grow. Similar to her work for Aardema's Bringing the Rain to Kapiti Plain (1981), Vidal's shimmering, folk art^-style paintings are well matched to the elegant simplicity and drama of Van Laan's retelling. A glossary and list of sources are included. Annie Ayres

Learning From Legends
By Cathie F.
I found the book very interesting. I would disagree with the reading level, however. It could be read by children in grades 2-4, but understood by somewhat younger children. The references to the various gods could be confusing to children who do not have any previous knowledge of them. The pictures are wonderful and the children I read the book to really enjoyed them. It is a great read-aloud book, and one I am going to use with students in grades 2-6 who are in resource reading classes.

An Argentine version of a Quechua story tells how young Topec saved his people from drought by going out in search of rain, aided by the advice of a wise old carob tree. Argentine-born illustrator Beatriz Vidal uses rich colors and a naive style to enhance the mood and setting of this ancient story.

Horace's Hope: What Works for the American High School, by Theodore R. Sizer

From America's "most prominent school reformer" (LOS ANGELES TIMES) comes a stirring personal meditation on what works-and what doesn't-in our high schools today. Revisiting America's classrooms, Sizer assesses the changes over the past decade and a half - from school choice to interdisciplinary learning - that give us reason to be hopeful. Tracy Kidder has called this"an eloquent book."

Amazon.com Review
The third book in the Horace trilogy, Horace's Hope explores Theodore R. Sizer's own hopes for the future of high schools. Sizer, the chairman of the Coalition of Essential Schools, first gained widespread attention in 1984 with Horace's Compromise, a study of the American high school, followed by Horace's School, a fictional account of school reform. In the final installment, Horace presents a progressive approach to education that allows students time and space to explore their subjects. This culmination of a 12-year attempt to establish more progressive schools advances the case for Sizer's vision of a reformed school system.

From Publishers Weekly
Sizer (Horace's Compromise and Horace's School), director of the Annenberg Institute for School Reform, in this third volume of his trilogy takes an informed look at the state of secondary education and offers his dreams for the future. "Horace," who represents a composite of the dedicated but frustrated teachers Sizer encountered in his visits to high schools across the country, still has a commitment to education, although he is being forced to make compromises at the expense of the students he teaches. To change high schools into viable learning institutions for all, the author advocates an end to administrative bureaucracy and real empowerment for teachers, a choice of specialized schools for families from all income levels, state rather than local school financing and the adaptation of emerging technology to reinforce learning at home, in the neighborhood or in a cultural or workplace environment. This is a heartfelt plea for high-school reform by an educator who cares deeply about young people.

From Library Journal
This lucid, accessible, and cogently argued assessment of the American educational reform movement at the high school level caps Sizer's Horace's Compromise (LJ 2/15/84) and Horace's School (LJ 1/92). Sizer, who founded the Coalition of Essential Schools in 1984 to promote school reforms, here outlines how the coalition's reforms have been adopted, how well they are working, and how much further the educational establishment has to change. He again stresses knowing each student well, minimizing testing, promoting exhibitions and portfolios as assessment devices, among other recommendations. Horace Smith, his fictionalized "everyteacher," hopes that schools are changing for the better in providing access to the American culture and ways to enrich it. The insights of this important reformer should be available in all libraries serving education students, teachers, school administators, and concerned parents.

Real good read
By Abrams
Theodore Sizer, the Chairman of the Coalition of Essential Schools has written his third book about the experiences and observations of Horace Smith, his fictional representation of an American high school English teacher. Theodore Sizer launched a successful but slow-paced revolution that requires more and elicits more from adolescent students. He participated in a study that revealed that today's schools teach useless fact memorization and have weak curriculums that do not challenge the students or the teachers. In this book, Horace's Hope, Sizer picks up where he left off in his previous two books. Sizer revisits the schools from his previous books, and sees that not much has changed at all. Sizer contends that the new school is no longer the academies but instead is the media. He says that schools must give students the tools to understand the media's message, and if necessary challenge their profit-driven ideas. He believes that the goal is "informed skepticism". This can be achieved through small classes and a multidisciplinary curriculum. Instead of the normal standardized exams, our students need to do project-orientated goals that are displayed much like a dissertation. Both the teachers and the parents must decide upon the curriculum. This opens up for Sizer's next opinion about the schools and communities. He makes a strong case for school choice. He proposes a solution to the problems of bad schools in both bad and good neighborhoods. Sizer suggests that geographic boundaries be obliterated, with public money following the student to the school of choice. This would allow parents the choice of sending their children to any school. If too many choose this particular school then a lottery would choose. This would encourage that all schools are helped. The fictional teacher, Horace, does not play a big role as in the previous two books. This book is mainly a celebration of Sizer's Coalition of Essential Schools, which supports the growing number of schools embracing the group's nine goals. Sizer contends that communities need to come together. He provides real-life examples from observation about the delinquencies of our schools and teachers. Sizer wants our children doing the "higher learning", which is sometimes associated with college studies (although most colleges do not even go this far). This creative learning is not possible from most teachers because they were educated in the same system they now inhabit. Thus, the cycle perpetuates. Sizer himself illustrates education at its best, setting up arguments, marshalling evidence, and reaching a convincing conclusion. He says there is a slow change. This change is what gives Horace, and the teachers like him, hope. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in education of our children.
My personal favorites on education are (in order): To Know as WE are Known: Education as a Spiritual Journey by Parker Palmer & Beyond Discipline: From Conformity to Community by Alphie Kohn

Ted Sizer's stories of what's happening in American high schools seem accurate and familiar. What's embarrassing is that a guy like him can go in, study the situation, identify what is happening and proceed to make changes, one school at a time, and have it grow into a nationwide movement. I say embarrassing because there are administrators (and teachers) in these schools year after year, who, either don't notice what Sizer sees or don't seem to be committed enough to affect change. It's almost an "Emperor has no clothes story". Nobody wants to sayanything to rock the boat-until it all collapses.
Sizer stops short of saying there will be anything like a revolution- he knows schools change too slowly to do that-but he does make a strong case for the embarrassment of America's underperforming and the underprivileged. I understand exactly what he's talking about when he talks about how poorly even the good students can discuss what they've learned, or identify what are the main ideas of what they've read. AS a teacher, I know their ability to make connections in history or have a sense of geography is abominable. It would almost be excusable except for the fact that teachers have been going through their gyrations of lessons since the kindergarten year. For the most part- the teachers blame the students. I like the fact that Sizer does not.
The power of America's media is well known, but I hadn't thought of it as the great American cultural unifier, supplanting the American school. This is an interesting notion. If this is true, it should free the schools of their self-imposed responsibility to teach American values, and therefore the schools can take a firmer position on scholarship, for example. The predominance of the media as culture gives us all the more reason to ask students (and ourselves)- `How do we make sense out of all of this?' The opposite path would be to bury our heads in a textbook reading- answering the questions at the end of the chapter. As Sizer (speaking of technology and the media) puts it, "The imagination has new equipment in its arsenal". However some (the poor) have no equipment.
I don't know why it takes a man like Sizer to remind us of our responsibilities to citizens in the name of democracy.Politicians and administrators should be leading the way in this regard, instead of obstructing positive change. Politicians preach equality every day- but Sizer seems to accomplish more toward the goals of freedom and equality despite having far less influence to start with. It's not just the schools that are broken. "What about standards for a system that accelerates the inequity in which they (children) live?" (p28) or standards for educators and politicians? (p46).
I concur with Sizer's view that there are two movements in America, top down and bottom up. This unspoken conflict is the reason for little or no change in our school system. Teachers want bottom up change, but instead, they are reluctantly implementing top down programs. The standards movement will be sabotaged everywhere- because there are no reasonable conditions to achieve them (Sizer's words).
But what I like best about Sizer is that he proposes hope and sensibility. New schools will emerge from alliances of students, teachers, parents, or the government will create more charter schools, or teachers will create non-profits or do what has been done in New York City- Deborah Meier with her school (CPESS) as well as the Center for Collaborative Education. Wouldn't it be interesting to see what American education would be like if people like Meier or Sizer were on the Bush cabinet as Secretary of Education?

Education Reform: The Tortoise and The Hare
By Jennifer Lamkins, Pepperdine University
Horace's Hope
Theodore Sizer, the Chairman of the Coalition of Essential Schools has written his third book about the experiences and observations of Horace Smith, his fictional representation of an American high school English teacher. In Horace's Hope, Sizer returns to many of the schools he studied and chronicled in his two previous books, Horace's Compromise and Horace's School. Though many of their problems still exist, the changes that have been implemented offer Horace and all of us hope for the American high school.
Many of the schools in Horace's Hope are now members of CES and have adopted the nine essential principles. These general principles, Sizer contends are only as good as the positive changes they create and the perseverance of those who implement them. Sizer contends that communities need to come together. Teachers and principals alone cannot get the job of education done. The community needs to be highly involved but mostly the parents and the students themselves, the focus of education reform. Some of these principles call for a change of philosophy, a change in action, are rather expensive and, all together, take time.
I recommend this book to those who might have anything to do with education whether they are teachers, parents, employers, or community leaders. We all have an investment in how our youth achieve in the 21st century and our involvement and productive community partnership is a major key to their success. Horace's hope has not been diminished but strengthened by the chaos, difficulties and torturously slow progress of positive change because progress is taking place even if a little at a time.
